Saints of the Week

June 11—Saint Barnabas

according to tradition an early Christian, one of

the prominent Christian disciples in Jerusalem.

According to Acts 4:36, Barnabas was a Cyp-

riot Jew. Named an apostle in Acts 14:14, he

and Paul the Apostle undertook missionary

journeys together and defended Gentile con-

verts against the Judaizers. They traveled to-

gether making more converts (c. 45–47), and participated in

the Council of Jerusalem (c. 50). Barnabas and Paul success-

fully evangelized among the "God-fearing" Gentiles who at-

tended synagogues in various Hellenized cities of Anatolia.

June 13—Saint Anthony of Padua

Saint Anthony of Padua, born Fernando Martins

de Bulhões - also known as Saint Anthony of

Lisbon - was a Portuguese Catholic priest and

friar of the Franciscan Order. He was born and

raised by a wealthy family in Lisbon, Portugal, and died in

Padua, Italy. Noted by his contemporaries for his powerful

preaching, expert knowledge of scripture, and undying love

and devotion to the poor and the sick, he was one of the most

quickly canonized saints in church history. He was proclaimed

a Doctor of the Church on 16 January 1946. He is also the pa-

tron saint of lost things.

Praying to Our Mother for others

Perpetual Candles at Sacred Heart

As May is the month of Our Lady, we are reminded that our greatest intercessor is Our Lady.

We are blessed to have three sacred spaces with candles at which we can light a candle for our

prayers and special intentions.

These candles can be used for weekly visits, as many of you already do. There is also the pos-

sibility to reserve a candle for a month(s) or a year. Some of the intentions for which a num-

ber of parishioners have reserved candles:

Deceased or living family

Condolence for friends or family

Anniversary of Marriage

Birthday

Automatically with the condolences, we send a letter to notify the grieving family of the candle

lit in our church for their loved one. We can also send a letter when requested for the others.

Visit one of our candle devotional spaces to light a candle. Fill out the form below to re-

serve a candle for a month or year.

Prayer to Saint Michael:

Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle, be

our defense against the wickedness and snares of the

devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do

thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of

God, thrust into Hell Satan and the other evil spirits

who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Preghiera a San Michele:

San Michele Arcangelo, difendici nella battaglia; sii tu nostro sostegno contro la perfidia e le insidie del diavolo; che Dio eserciti il suo dominio su di lui, te ne preghiamo supplichevoli; e tu, o Principe della milizia celeste, con la potenza divina, ricaccia nell'inferno satana e gli altri spiriti maligni i quali errano nel mondo per perdere le anime. AMEN.

Values that Last a Lifetime!

Bulletin Column for Pentecost Sunday

“Pentecost is the feast of union”. These are the words of Pope emeritus, Benedict XVI. What was once divided is brought to-

gether. What was in darkness is brought to light. What was once in a state of confusion is now brought to clarity and truth. The

feast of Pentecost is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It is the opening of the hearts and minds of all men and women to become

one in Christ through the Church. It means changing our way of thinking, acting, and being, from “I” to “We.” It means unity of

all in Christ through the Spirit. Benedict XVI asks: “Can unity and harmony really exist? How? We find the answer in Sacred

Scripture: unity can only exist as a gift of God’s Spirit who will give us a new heart and a new language, a new ability to commu-

nicate…” And so the Spirit pours forth His gifts on the people. This is what happened at Pentecost. The Acts of the Apostles

gives us an account of Pentecost almost as though it were a pyrotechnics event, with the driving wind, the noise, and the tongues

of fire; but John’s Gospel account paints a very different picture. We have a peaceful, quiet event, where Jesus simply says,

“Peace be with you…” and “…Receive the Holy Spirit…”

Yes, the Feast of Pentecost is a feast of unity, oneness. “By the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, Christ’s

Paschal Mystery was brought to completion. The Holy Spirit prepares us with his grace in order to draw us to Christ…” The

Feast of Pentecost is the promise of Christ fulfilled.

God bless you all,

Fr. Guy
