Eighteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time Jn. 6:1-15

We can certainly understand God’s frustration with his people in today’s first reading from Exodus (16:2-4,12-15).

The God of Israel has just delivered his people from slavery and has set them on the way to their promised land. Yet after

crossing the Red Sea and celebrating their victory, the first recorded action in the Sinai proves to be grumbling and dissatis-

faction, first over the bitter water at Mara (Exodus 15:22-27), and then more complaining and nostalgic longing for the flesh-

pots in the land of Egypt, where they were able to eat their fill!

Into this setting of ingratitude and lamentation, God rains down bread from heaven (manna) and quail for their food. The

Exodus passage (16:2-4,12-15) contrasts the nonbeliever (who grumbles that the manna and quail are meager nourishment)

with the believer (who sees these as God’s generous gifts to the hungry).

A different kind of food.

In today’s Gospel text (John 6:24-35) that follows the miraculous multiplication of the loaves, Jesus says to the crowds who

were seeking him: “Truly, truly I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the

loaves. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to eternal life, which the Son of man will

give to you” (John 6:26-27).

Jesus’ hearers continue the conversation and ask him, “What must we do to perform the works of God?” (John 6:28). Jesus

answers: “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent” (John 6:29). It is an exhortation to have faith

in the Son of Man, in the giver of the food that does not perish. Without faith in him whom the Father has sent, it is not possi-

ble to recognize and accept this gift which does not pass away.

Decimo octavo domingo del Tiempo Ordinario Juan. 6:1-15

Ciertamente, podemos entender la frustración de Dios con su pueblo en la primera lectura de hoy de Éxodo (16: 2-4, 12-15).

El Dios de Israel acaba de liberar a su pueblo de la esclavitud y lo ha puesto en camino a su tierra prometida. Sin embargo,

después de cruzar el Mar Rojo y celebrar su victoria, la primera acción registrada en el Sinaí demuestra que está gruñendo e

insatisfecho, primero sobre las aguas amargas en Mara (Éxodo 15: 22-27), y luego más nostalgia quejumbrosa por las ¡ollas

de carne en la tierra de Egipto, donde podían comer hasta saciarse!

En este marco de ingratitud y lamentación, Dios hace llover pan del cielo (maná) y codornices para su alimento. El pasaje del

Éxodo (16: 2-4, 12-15) contrasta al no creyente (que se queja de que el maná y la codorniz son alimento escaso) con el cre-

yente (quien los ve como los regalos generosos de Dios para el hambriento).

Un tipo diferente de comida.

En el texto evangélico de hoy (Juan 6: 24-35) que sigue a la milagrosa multiplicación de los panes, Jesús dice a las multitudes

que lo buscaban: "En verdad, en verdad les digo que me buscan, no porque vean señales, pero debido a que comieron de los

panes hasta saciarse. No trabajen por la comida que perece, sino por la comida que dura para la vida eterna, que el Hijo del

hombre las dará "(Juan 6: 26-27).

Los oyentes de Jesús continúan la conversación y le preguntan: "¿Qué debemos hacer para realizar las obras de Dios?" (Juan

6:28). Jesús responde: "Esta es la obra de Dios, que creáis en el que él ha enviado" (Juan 6:29). Es una exhortación a tener fe

en el Hijo del Hombre, en el dador de la comida que no muere. Sin fe en aquel a quien el Padre ha enviado, no es posible re-
