Sacred Heart Catholic Church Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time–August 20, 2017
Reflection from the Pastor:
When I was a freshman in high school, one of my teachers was named Sister
Joseph Mary. In her religion class, she was explaining the various postures
we adopt in prayer, in particular at Holy Mass. She said something that
sparked my attention: “When the priest talks to God, he turns to God. When
he talks to us, he turns to us.” Having attended Catholic schools my entire
life, I knew that it made sense, but I couldn’t recall ever having seen the
priest not face us. So the next time I went to Mass, I watched intently and
was disappointed that the priest never once didn’t face us. I figured that I had
missed something, and I put it out of my head. Of course, those of you who
are older now know what I was missing: nowadays, the priest almost always
says Mass facing the people. But more and more, parishes around the
country are rediscovering the appropriateness and the beauty of the original
way of celebrating Mass: the priest and the people face in the same direction.
The priest didn’t have his back to us. No, he was praying with and for the
people. Although most parishes continue to celebrate the Mass with the
priest facing the people, it’s a good reminder for all of us that our prayer is
always to God, and not to each other.
