Dwayne Johnson pays special tribute to Paul WalkerActor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has paid tribute to his friend and co-actor Paul Walker in a very special way. Walker was killed in a fiery car crash in 2013.

Dwayne, who featured in “Fast & Furious 6” with Walker and is also part of the forthcoming seventh franchise of the action thriller, took to Instagram Saturday to post a short video clip that honours Walker’s dedication to marine life, reports eonline.com.

“I Was moved to shoot this very special intro to one of Paul Walker’s final missions for shark and marine conservation,” Johnson wrote on Instagram.

In the video shot for Discovery’s “Shark Week”, which kicks off Sunday, The Rock looks back at the actor’s life both on and off screen.

Katie Price made husband take lie detector testFormer model Katie Price made husband Kieran Hayler undergo a lie detector test.

Price - who gave birth to her fifth child sometime back - recently reconciled with Hayler after he admitted to being unfaithful. But she insisted he was truly honest with her before agreeing to take him back and even used the specialist truth-detecting equipment used on ITV’s “The Jeremy Kyle Show,” reports femalefirst.co.uk.

“I used the people Jeremy Kyle use. I know that sounds cliched but I just figured out that ITV must have checked them out and that they knew what they were doing,” the 36-year-old star was quoted by OK! magazine as saying.

“Kieran said it was the worst thing ever. He tried to take energy drinks, slow down his breathing - everything he could to try to trick the test, but he couldn›t,” he added.

Around 11:55 am local time yesterday, a 911 call came in about a man who was unresponsive in his home in Tiburon in California. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the Sheriff’s office said. According to a press release issued by the Marin County Coronor’s office, the Sheriff’s office suspects the death to be “suicide due to asphyxia.” The 9-1-1 phone call came in just before noon yesterday.

“Robin Williams passed away this morning. He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time,” a statement issued by his publicists said.

“This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one if its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief,” the actor’s wife Susan Schneider released the statement to the New York Times.

Williams, dubbed as “the funniest man alive” by Entertainment Weekly in 1997, brought audiences hours of laughter, putting his imaginative spin on characters in film and television.

A Class Apart

it is well established with all the necessary infrastructural facilities. All it needs is some fine tuning so it can withhold the league that has been established by my predecessors.

What is the most challenging aspect of the job for you?Working for a hotel becomes more of a lifestyle than just a regular job. Hospitality a people-oriented industry and finding the right people to do the job is among the biggest challenges. Identifying the right personnel, keeping them motivated and retaining them is key to running an establishment successfully.

…And the most rewarding? When I go and attend exhibitions, I bump into at least 40 people who used to work for me and now hold managerial positions, which gives me immense happiness to know that I contributed to their career’s success. Also, customer satisfaction matters to me the most.

What does a typical day in your office look like?I wake up quite early around 5.50am and hit the gym on most mornings. Before 8.30,

I make it a point to go through different reports of the various departments of the hotel. The rest of the day goes in meetings and responding to things. I also like interacting with my staff frequently.

I usually spend the evening with friends and also on social media, catching up with friends, former colleagues and staff members.

What do you consider as the proudest moment in your career so far?I’m yet to achieve it. I don’t want to set an ultimate achievement and limit myself to that.

What is your advice to young hospitality graduates? The hospitality sector is more of a lifestyle than just a regular 9-5 job. Be prepared to face challenges every day and don’t shy away from responsibilities.

What are your thoughts on the rapid growth of hospitality in the region? As long as there is an initiative from the government to promote tourism, the hospitality sector will continue to expand and it is ever-growing around the GCC.

Having taken up the post of GM last year, Mr. Abu Omar brings over 29 years of international hotel management expertise from having worked in The United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, and Lebanon. He was also awarded with ‘Hotelier of The Year’ in 2009 in Jordan as well as one of the top 50 influential hoteliers in the Middle East 2009 selected by Hotelier ME.He tells us more about his outlook on hospitality in the GCC, his long term plans for the hotel as well as a little bit about his interests in a candid chat with Sabaya Magazine.

Tell me about yourself and your journey into the hospitality sector?I’m Palestinian Jordanian by nationality and the fifth child among 11 siblings. My father was the headmaster of a school and he wanted me to be a doctor or an engineer. I got influenced by the revolutions happening in the country and became headstrong on changing the world. My father told me to concentrate on studies above all else and reluctantly, I agreed.

I studied chemistry and then business management as a minor. I was still determined to cause a change in the world and decided that travelling will aid me with the same, so I boarded a plane from Amman to Dubai to work in a travel agency.

From there I had an opportunity to work in a hotel ad I took it up purely for financial reasons. I started my career as sales executive in a hotel and ultimately became the CEO, handling around seven properties, spending almost three decades with the company.

After that, I wanted to go back to Jordan and settle down with my family but soon realized that it was too early for me to go back home.

How did you get the position of GM at Gulf Hotel? What are your long-term plans for the property?I had friends in Bahrain who are pioneer hoteliers at the Gulf Hotel Group. and was approached by them to join the company and this is how I landed in Bahrain.

Gulf Hotel is an iconic hotel in Bahrain;

Self-taught calligraphy artist Muhsin Ghareeb distinctively fuses painting, sculpting and Arabic calligraphy to form a unique variation of art. The result is a blend of colours with beautiful pen strokes. Having been in the field for over 20 years, Muhsin’s work has been exhibited in many exhibitions and galleries around the world. He has turned his passion into his profession and has his own company named New Style. He tells Sabaya readers how he learnt the art form as well as the challenges he faced on his way to the top.

Passion for the penMuhsin Ghareeb

SEPTEMBER 2014 19

Tell us more about how you developed an interest in calligraphy?I used to witness how calligraphy was used in day-to-day aspects like signboards, magazine, posters and the entire Holy Quran. I started practicing it and worked on developing my penmanship over the years.

I later went on to learn it professionally from a revered teacher for six months.

At the age of 23, I went headstrong into this art form and joined the Bahrain Contemporary Artists Association, where I learnt how to paint and sculpt as well. I didn’t have any formal education in art so the association taught me plenty. This is my passion and I’ve adapted it into a profession. What hurdles did you face trying to validate your art?I learnt through a book on how to learn calligraphy through Iraqi author and artist Mohammed Hashim. There were no schools or teachers available readily so it was a bit

of a struggle to learn it in the first place.

I wanted to incorporate calligraphy with art, matching abstract art with calligraphy which was not very well known at the time. What advice do you have for aspiring artists and what do you think about the art scene here?Bahrain is a small country with a rapidly mushrooming art scene, with lots of great artists everywhere. Always aspire to go global. Do something different, something unique and always emphasize on the highest quality of work. Work on getting your art noticed.

No matter how big you make it, never develop pride or put anyone down. Art should come from within and humility is the key. What do you like the best about your own art?I love sculpture and calligraphy. I’ve tried

getting into installation art and other forms but never took it up.What are your future plans?Every artist aspires to be the best in their field. I want to cross regional boundaries and go international with my art. I am not just working for myself, I’m representing my country and I want to to be able to take Bahrain to international waters through my art form.Where do you get art inspiration from? From magazines, artists, galleries and workshops. I also love the works of artists like Ebrahim Bu Saad and Michelangelo.

Success Story

What piqued your interest in Public Relations and marketing in the first place?I started my hospitality career back in 2006.

My first job was Executive Office Administrator at the Movenpick Resort & Spa Dead Sea in Jordan.

Coming from accounting background it was a great challenge and big career shift for me, but it was a great opportunity to get the clear insight on how hotels work. I picked up on many different facets of the hotel operation and I personally loved the PR and Marketing, where you get to meet new people from different parts of the world. It’s hectic but very enjoyable at the same time.

How do you manage all your responsibilities?I look over digital marketing, social media, branding, promotions and public relations. I’m more into the strategic part of the business. I think my hospitality mentors instilled me with the element of time management. Prioritizing is very important and that is how you understand your responsibilities. You need to write down everything so you don’t forget what you need to do.

What advice do you have for youngsters joining the hospitality industry? There is something new to do every day andyou need to always update yourself. If there is something new in the market, you need to know it and enlist out the competition.

What do you do to relax after a long day?I just relax at home and spend time withmy family.

What is the one thing you love about this industry? You’ve got to meet a lot of interesting people along the way, most of them have really inspired me to do better on what I do. I always believe that personalization is very important in our industry.

What is the most challenging aspect of the job? In this age of great change, the most challenging part as hotel marketers is to be always updated on the trends and what’s happening on the market, every single day there is something new to learn and just like all the gadgets it will always work when its updated.

Describe five things about the communication within an organization that must be present for you to work most

Our makeover winner Afsana Gazi was picked from the 350 entries we received for the competition. She was treated to a dazzling hair and a more natural beauty makeover by our very own Natalie Semaan.

This is what Afsana has to say: “The entire experience was amazing! My hair needed some work as the colour was

washed out and dull so the hairstylist gave me a violet-red colour along with side-swept bangs while getting rid of my split ends. She also used a colour booster which really made the hair colour pop. Most hair colours fade out after a few days but this is still vibrant. For makeup, I asked Natalie to give me a more natural look since I don’t apply

heavy makeup so she gave me a love-ly summery look with a pinkish tinge which really complimented my features. I couldn’t recognize myself after she was done!

I really enjoyed the entire experience and would definitely go back to Natalie for makeup as well as suggest her to every one of my friends and family.”

Adding gold accessories, Jessica styled her look with a Kotur clutch and Kurt Geiger ‘Belgravia’ sandals, with a punchy pink lip and part-braided hairstyle rounding out her look. I think she manages to look sexy without coming across as trying too hard.

Frantic energyPhilip Lim 3.1 Pre-fall 2014

Phillip Lim turned 40 this year and threw himself a birthday party in the city where the party’s never stopped: Berlin. He was fascinated by the

“percolating current of rave culture” there. That culture is super modern-even if rave’s first heyday was somewhere circa the nineties-and coexists with Berlin’s crumbling stateliness. “They’re living in a transitional landscape,” he said. You can twist your glow sticks among elegant ruins.

That got the wheels turning. Pre-Fall is a transitional collection, so put the two together and you’re off. The collection had the frantic, sometimes messy energy of a party running late. The transitional theme was applied liberally, and often literally: pieces were properly tailored on one side and left raw and ragged on the other. In homage to the splicing of cultures in Berlin, fabrics were spliced together, like cream tailored jackets with slashed-in panels of floral jacquard. A novelty poodle motif, appliquéd on sweatshirts and clutches, was, with energetic illogic, spliced in from somewhere else entirely.

The mix worked best where the usual Lim hits-side-zipped sweatshirts, leather jogging pants-got a hint (or a hit?) of wildness. The sweatshirts in metallic foil, for instance, or the tops crawling with lichenous tufts of shearling. But in its more literal moments, such as a glow-stick print, the theme weighed down the charm of the collection. It just goes to show, the story of the party is rarely as good as the party itself.

Ralph Lauren Fall/Winter 2014

This is how Ralph Lauren describes his Polo women’s collection for fall-winter 2014 which was unexpectedly shown before the mainline. The bohemian theme is

clear with a mix of grungy floral prints, bold colors and plaid shirts in the twenty-five look preview. Halfway through the presentation, it’s time for the Ralph Lauren looks and the mood definitely shifts for a more uptown glam vibe including fur coats, pin-striped suits and flirty ruffled skirts. Evening wear embraces slinky silhouettes with dresses made of silk jersey in cool shades of muted grey.

How Ralph Lauren refers to the type of clothes his discerning customer wants, and while the American designer may have been speaking specifically

about his new luxury Purple Label lineup, that design ethos could easily apply to the RL world.

As with any RL collection, after the impact of the expertly executed looks, it’s the considered details that pull you in. In Purple Label’s tailored offerings, that means a graphic black and white tailored story softened by tonal gray plaids or unstructured sports jackets knit from impossibly lightweight cashmeres. Black Label’s fittingly blacked-out denim and leather jacket rigs not only prove monochromatic dressing is unquestionably a trend for fall, but that it requires a blend of textures and fabrics that play with matte and shine to pull it off. And across the board the power of the turtleneck was at play, layered under suits, tailored coats, moto-inspired leather jackets, while below the pant hems streamlined Chelsea and harness boots in handsome chestnut and chocolate suede led the all-encompassing footwear parade.

In the Polo section, freshly layered mash-ups of trimmed-down sartorial pieces, classic American sportswear, and essential outerwear looked more modern than ever.

In terms of colours, this Fall/Winter sets forth an urban palette with polar overtones, punctuated by fluorescent touches.

The style plays with contrasts, exploring the masculine universe and transposing it into a feminine silhouette that mixes fluidity with technicality while combining sports wear and evening wear.

A fitted, wrapped allure where disciplined clothing allows the body to move naturally.

Neroli is the essence of unions and purity, yet its scent is far from innocent. Its encounter with the orchid, a flower from the other side of the world, is in no way a coincidence. While both essences seem so

different, both white flowers are symbolic of femininity.

much more. In short, the Amazon River in Colombia is an experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

4. Experience the wonderful colours of Lake Cano CristalesFor most of the year, Caño Cristales is indistinguishable from any other river: a bed of rocks covered in dull green mosses are visible below a cool, clear current.

For a few weeks from September through November, the river transforms into a veritable living rainbow. During the short span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right, a unique species of plant that lines the river floor called Macarenia clavigera turns a brilliant red. It is offset by splotches of yellow and green sand, blue water, and a thousand shades in between. This only happens for a brief period in between seasons.

5. Learn to Salsa in CaliWidely considered one of the top salsa dancing cities in the world, Cali is home to some of the country’s top professional dancers. A large number of dance academies offer lessons to locals and visitors alike.

At night, hitting the city’s salsa clubs to practice what you learned in class definitely ranks among the top things to do in Colombia.

6. Visit the bustling city of MedellinMedellin is one of Colombia’s biggest

It is the only country in South America with coasts on the Pacific and Caribbean. It is a spectacularly beautiful country, with the Andes, beaches, colonial cities and

archaeological treasures to delight the business or leisure traveler. With such an astonishing variety of incredible things to do in Colombia, most visitors find that they simply cannot squeeze everything that they want to do into a single trip.

We count down the top things to-do while visiting the beautiful country.

1. Lounge in the beaches of San Andres & ProvidenciaIf it’s postcard-perfect beaches you’re after, look no further. San Andres is a more popular island, but the secluded beaches at Providencia are some of Colombia’s finest. San Andres and Providencia are two islands off the coast of Colombia. Blessed with beautiful, year-round weather and some of the most sparkling waters you’re likely to see, both are incredible options for anyone looking for a bit of relaxation in the Caribbean.

While San Andres may be a little more built up, it still retains its small island charms and laid back atmosphere. Providencia, however, takes this to whole new levels. Littered with secluded beaches and only sparsely populated, it’s your own personal island adventure.

Travel

2. Visit snow-capped mountains of El CocuyThis challenging but rewarding hike up El Cocuy is one of Colombia’s most surprising highlights. Though it might be somewhat off-the-beaten track in Colombia, El Cocuy makes the list by virtue of its sheer unexpectedness. While Colombia is making a name for itself as a country that defies expectations, surely even the most liberal and open-minded of travelers wouldn’t expect to need to pack clothes for the snow when they visit the country.

Trekking El Cocuy is one of the best experiences you can have in Colombia – it’s a story to tell and an experience like no other. El Cocuy is a moderately challenging trek, so be prepared and do your research before attempting it.

3. Explore nature and wildlife along the Amazon RiverAn intrepid traveler’s dream, the Amazon River is one of the most exciting places on earth for wildlife and adventure. The Amazon River has captured the traveler’s imagination for centuries. This is nature in its wildest form, where even the small settlements in the area dare not disturb nature’s delicate equilibrium.

Travel to Amazonian Colombia and you’ll be able to visit indigenous communities in Peru and Brazil, as well as see monkeys, pink dolphins, colourful parrots and

success stories. Medellin, for so long the black sheep of Colombia, has finally shed its reputation and become one of its shining stars. Thanks to progressive politics, a palpable sense of determination from locals as well as a lot of hard work, the city is now safe for travelers and thousands of visitors flock to the city every year.

Medellin boasts a great restaurant scene, an impressive nightlife and a rapidly modernizing skyline that is punctuated with beautiful new buildings and skyscrapers.

7. Travel to the glorious BogotaExplore Colombia’s best museums (including the Gold Museum and Botero Museum), sample Colombia’s international cuisine and rub shoulders with the cosmopolitan crowds of Bogota’s nightlife.

Every day Bogota is added to more and more lists of “up and coming cities”. For those in the know, this transformation happened a while ago. You can explore Bogota’s many varied neighborhoods and get a taste of just how international this city is becoming. In fashionable Chapinero you’ll rub shoulders with the artists and hipsters of the city drinking coffee in trendy cafes, while further north in La T (especially recommended is La Villa on Tuesdays and at the weekend) and Parque 93 you’ll find a more affluent clientele that are looking to let loose and party. For your fix of colonial arhcitecture, take a relaxing stroll

in Usaquen and see Bogota’s most famous sights in La Candelaria before heading off to eat in Zona G.

8. Trek to Ciudad PerdidaArrange a 5-6 day jungle trek from Santa Marta or Taganga to Ciudad Perdida (The Lost City). More than a few travelers have proclaimed it to be one of the best adventures in all of South America. If you want to feel like Indiana Jones, add this to your list of things to do in Colombia.

9. Experience Rural Life in PueblosAn hour or two outside of most big cities like Medellin and Bogota are small pueblos which offer insights into the rural way of life in Colombia.

While they share a common layout, centered around a main plaza, each pueblo has its own identity and energy. Popular pueblos include Guatape, Salento, and Jardin.

10. Visit the spectacular, picturesque CartagenaColonial Cartagena is one of South America’s most picturesque cities, and an essential visit on any Colombia tour.

Even when Colombia was embroiled in the troubles of the past decades, thousands of tourists made their way to Cartagena to meander through the relaxing cobblestone streets and discover life at a completely different pace.

In Cartagena you’ll discover superb museums, delectable cuisine, beautiful beaches and much more. The biggest appeal of the city, however, is just to get lost in the Old City and, come sunset, enjoy a delicious cocktail as the sunsets over Cafe del Mar.

Amazon Fire Phone

Is Amazon’s foray into the smartphone space a success?

Knock it for the Windows 8 launch. Lay into it for how it debuted the Xbox One. But, when it comes to its latest product, the Surface Pro 3, don’t pull out the torches and pitchforks just yet – Microsoft is onto something here.

Over the past few years, the Redmond, Wash. Windows maker has proved to be one of the bolder technology companies, for better or worse. Microsoft clearly isn’t afraid to fall on its face in the hope of landing on what in the world tech users want next in this turbulent market, and the Surface Pro 3 is – well, it just might be an exception. The company has been hammering away at what it considers is a problem with tablets for years. Since the launch of the Surface Pro, Microsoft has sought after the ultimate mobile computing device, one that could replace the laptop with a tablet-first approach.

The Surface Pro 3 is closer than Microsoft has ever been to making good on its mobile computing vision. After over a week with the slate, I’d go so far as to say that the Pro 3 is closer than any laptop-tablet hybrid released yet. Yes, Microsoft bumped the Surface Pro touchscreen from a tiny 10.6 inches to a far roomier 12 inches. In the process, the pixel

Amazon’s tablets are also on the Fire Phone. However, the Fire Phone is loaded with things you won’t find on Amazon’s tablets, so it’s not just a shrunken version of the Kindle Fire HDX.

VerdictAmazon’s Fire Phone is a decent attempt at selling more Amazon goods and services, but it’s hardly a smartphone worth considering if you›re not already invested in Amazon’s ecosystem.

If you’re looking for flexibility in an operating system (customization, great apps, etc.) and you want top-end specs to boot, consider an Android flagship smartphone or iPhone. They cost the same as the Fire Phone.

However, if you already spend your life devoted to Amazon’s Kindle products, Prime benefits and music and media, you may enjoy this phone. Then again, you can still enjoy all those benefits on Android or iOS with the Kindle and Amazon apps.

Techno LogicLatest Gadgets and what you will love about them!

Jumping into a highly competitive space, like the smartphone market, is risky. But if there’s a company out there that could do it with a chance of success, it’s Amazon. Its new Fire Phone is the company’s first stab at it, and we’re going to find out how well it fares against the competition.

In order to have any measure of success, Amazon has to differentiate its smartphone from everyone else, namely Android and iOS smartphones.

There have been rumors of an Amazon smartphone for years, but because of the insane success of Android smartphones from Samsung, HTC and LG, the Amazon smartphone hype never reached the heights that future iPhone iterations would.

Of course, Amazon is no stranger to the mobile device market. Aside from the Amazon apps and Kindle apps, Amazon also has the Kindle Fire HDX, which succeeded the Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire.

It’s important to note its tablet efforts, because many of the features found on

count has been upped from 1920 x 1080 to 2160 x 1440 The result is a modest boost in pixels per inch – 207 ppi to 216 ppi – given the increase in screen real estate.

VerdictIt’s worth reiterating the point that the Surface Pro 3 is not only Microsoft’s most striking and versatile device to date, but the most convincing poster child for the hybrid category yet. And this ringing endorsement comes from a long-time skeptic of such devices.

That said, the Pro 3 is hamstrung by flaws that cannot be ignored. Namely, the battery life might be in line with most Ultrabooks, but it doesn’t come close to what Apple’s leading laptop and top tablet have shown. At any rate, this version of the tablet comes in cheaper than the most affordable iPad Air and 13-inch MacBook Air combined, even with the Type Cover, and that’s the point. On paper, this slate is more powerful than either Apple device, not to mention most other comparably priced laptops and tablets.

Moves air effectively, but it’s expensive!Dyson Cool

Dyson is an expert at moving air from one place to another. Its bagless vacuum cleaners are designed to suck air, its fans are designed to blow it. And both collect dust more prolifically than a Nintendo Wii circa 2009, some by design, others... not so much.

It’s been making its Air Multipliers for a few years now, and if you’ve not met one before they›re bladeless fans designed to keep you cool in a toasty summer living room or a sweaty office.

After all, you can buy a desk fan to blow your face, right? So spending more than ten times that much on a Dyson is not something you’re going to do without good reason.

But you can’t deny that the bladeless design is unique and far more practical than the traditional one. And the amount of air the Dysons move has always been impressive.

Since 2010, then, Dyson has expanded its range to include the Dyson Hot fan heaters and the Dyson Hot + Cool all-in-ones. And now arrive some more additions to the original Air Multiplier range, now branded Dyson Cool.

It comes in various shapes and while the decibel levels are a bit lower... but the price tags are even higher.

VerdictIt’s hard to get past those asking prices. They›re cheapest on the Dyson site itself, but even the £220 desk model is a lot to ask for a device that just

moves air from one place to another. £300 for the AM07 is another step up again, especially when you can buy a decent tower fan online for £50.

But there’s a lot to be said for going the whole hog and splashing out on the Dyson. It’s quiet.

It moves more air. It is remote controlled and it’s smaller and lighter than the equivalents. It’s a truly luxury item in summer especially and If you can afford it, I doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Nook GlowLight

Canon IXUS 265Whenever someone asks me to recommend a compact camera that is sleek, stylish, feature-packed and offers great quality, those from the Canon IXUS range usually spring to mind.

The 265 sits at the top of Canon’s current line-up of its stylish brand (it generally refers to its more enthusiast based cameras as PowerShots).

It features a 16-million pixel CMOS sensor, which is back-illuminated for better performance in low light. It also features a Digic 4+ processor, which is a couple of generations below the latest available, but has still proven itself to be a good performer in the past.

The camera’s 12x optical zoom covers a 35mm equivalent range of 25-300mm. There’s also digital zoom available in the form of ZoomPlus, which boosts that up to 24x, and a further 4x digital zoom to make a combined total of 48x.

A number of different shooting modes are available, but a couple that

are of particular interest is Hybrid Auto, which creates a short video clip two seconds before the shutter button is pressed and combines all the clips at the end of the day for an overview of your day – a fun setting for day trips, holidays, weddings, parties and so on.

The second is Creative Shot, which automatically takes a set of five different photos each with a different digital filter applied to it.

VerdictA smart and stylish compact camera which is an ideal choice for those looking for something that they can easily slip into a pocket and forget

about. It

doesn’t offer lots of manual control, but if you just want something for your holiday, parties and nights out, this is ideal.

Is the Nook GlowLight worth a glowing recommendation?

12x optical zoom, Wi-Fi and creative modes in a cute, compact package

Although not as well known as Amazon’s all-conquering Kindle e-readers, the Nook series was the first to bring in a backlight display with the original Simple Touch GlowLight in 2012.

It was well received but, predictably, ousted in sales terms by the introduction of Amazon’s own backlight-toting Kindle Paperwhite. That hasn’t stopped US bookseller Barnes & Noble, the company behind the Nook brand, from refining the Simple Touch GlowLight model with a new white design and some enhanced features. The design remains similar to the original Simple Touch GlowLight, opposing the blocky right angles of the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite or Kobo Aura HD with rounded corners and a soft-touch plastic exterior.

The chassis is edged with a light grey silicon trim and the entire device feels comfortable to hold even for long periods of time. Nook has shaved plenty of excess weight from the GlowLight in the last couple of years, slimming down to 175g from the 197g of the original Simple Touch GlowLight. As Nook is keen to point out, it’s also 15% lighter than Amazon’s Kindle Paperwhite.

Final verdictThe Nook GlowLight isn’t better than the Kindle Paperwhite, but it is a viable alternative for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it’s cheaper. If you’re looking for just a standard e-reader with a backlight, then this will suffice.

Secondly, the design is

different enough from Amazon’s sharp, black rectangle to give you a moment’s consideration. If, like me, you’ve had enough of black and grey gadgets and like the thought of a clean white look, then this could be for you. Yes, it’s massively subjective, but all I’m saying is consider it.

As an e-reader the Nook GlowLight is a perfectly serviceable device – it has its drawbacks and there are omissions, such as microSD support. But if you›re looking to pick up a reliable ereader with all the basic features you›ll need and a bulging library of titles to take advantage of, then this is for you.

MERCEDES C200BABY S-CLASS

By Fayez Abubacker

Auto Review

INTRODUCTIONWith all-new underpinnings, class-leading features, technology, and safety equipment, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is significantly improved over the previous version. And instead of simultaneously playing entry model, luxury sedan, and sport sedan, it’s been allowed to simply be very charming. It’s larger, lighter, quicker, more elegant, more spacious, more powerful and more luxurious than the current sedan. Mercedes is set on keeping the essence of the model, but it added a certain degree of energizing comfort, sportiness and dynamics. Our 6-point review about the Mercedes C200 will give you a better idea why we call it the Baby S-Class…

Page 53: Sabaya Magazine September 2014

SEPTEMBER 2014 51

OUR 6 POINT REVIEW

1. EXTERIORThe Elegance and Sophisticated styling of the new C-Class clearly breaks from former C-Class models. These updates include a more streamlined S-class looks that has a sportier fascia with large intakes, more sculpted flanks and a new headlight design with standard H7 halogen lights. It bids farewell to chopped-off deck-lid profile and gives the C a rounded tail that’s a pleasant, softer complement to the sharp front end. In the side view a long bonnet, a passenger compartment set well back and short overhangs define the C-Class’s classic, well-balanced Mercedes-Benz saloon proportions. The 2015 C-class grew a bit with overall size; resulting increase in size to a roomier, more usable rear seat, as well as more cargo space, now up to 17 cubic feet in the trunk.

2. INTERIORIt was immediately apparent that the S-class vibe continues to the interior. Five round vents dot the dash, the middle three resting atop a one-piece center console that terminates just below the centrally positioned free standing 7inch touch screen. With their metallic cool-touch effect; they create a fascinating, tangible contrast to the warm look of the other materials – such as the wood in the centre console or the leather on the dashboard. Those familiar with the Benz’s COMAND infotainment system, however, will be surprised to find a small, ergonomically shaped guard positioned over the COMAND control wheel. Far from a decorative fixture, it houses a mouse-like touch pad with haptic feedback that permits the operation of all infotainment functions using finger gestures. Entry and exit to the back seat seems to have fallen victim to the roofline and more aggressive door cut-lines.

3. PERFORMANCEThe turbocharged 2.0 liter four cylinder engine is rated at 184 hp and 270 Nm torque which will hit 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds. It is built on the modular MRA rear-wheel-drive architecture that makes the car 220 pounds lighter than the previous C-Class. Thanks to this reduced weight, fuel consumption drops by 20 percent. Additionally, the center of gravity is also lower; resulting in sportier driving dynamics. It also features a standard steel suspension that features a four-link front setup and a five-link rear setup. The advanced front suspension system is separate from the strut, allowing for quicker steering response.

4. RIDE & HANDLINGMaking its debut in the C-class, Agility Select is capable of adjusting throttle response, steering-assist levels, damper firmness, and transmission shift points. Parameters are determined by selecting Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, and individual settings. The air-sprung ride quality provides for nimble and agile handling that makes it composed and serene. The engine pulls eagerly and shifts snick off transparently under light throttle. The gear-changes get a little more obvious under a heavy foot. Brakes are crisp at the top of the pedal travel. The auto stop-start mechanism is so subtle we didn›t even realize it was active. The power steering assistance provided by the rack and pinion steering gear is controlled on-demand, thereby contributing to efficiency.

5. SAFETYPretty much the entire suite of Mercedes-Benz Intelligent Drive active-safety features are now offered in the C-Class and for the typical big-city-commuting C-Class customer, they’re probably better put to use here than in the flagship S-Class. Highlights

include Attention Assist that warns you if you might be distracted or dozing off; Crosswind Assist; a Pre-Safe braking and pedestrian detection system; Collision Prevention Assist Plus; Brake Assist System Plus with Cross-Traffic Assist; and an Active Lane Keeping Assist system that will steer to keep you in your lane for some seconds before giving you a stern warning.

6. EQUIPMENTSIt offers a standard and optional feature list that looks certainly above the norm for the smaller luxury sedan segment. Standard equipment in the C-Class includes that capacitive touch pad, keyless start, a power driver’s seat with memory settings and the seven-inch display and COMAND control wheel interface. Highlights from the options list, outside of the active-safety area, include a panorama sunroof, head-up display, a Sport Package with AMG bodywork, AMG wheels, and a sport suspension, a cabin LED illumination package and LED head and tail-lamps. The matte-metallic brightworks of the Burmester in-door speaker enclosures are unmistakable.

VERDICTThere is no doubt about the new C-class being a proper Mercedes-Benz that condenses every core brand value in a more compact, youthful wrapper. But the variable-ratio electromechanical direct steer system lunged a little more, the brakes felt touchier and despite the several inches of added length there’s really not enough legroom. Otherwise, the new C-Class appears to have accomplished all of its maker’s goals. With the state-of-the-art safety gear, and outstanding road manners, the new C-Class successfully bridges the gap between traditional Mercedes-Benz customers and those who may have been shopping at sportier rival brand showrooms.

The fairly new stately 5-star property is constructed in the shape of a crescent, evocative of sea shells found on a beach.

Offering its guests a pristine beach getaway away from the bustling city, hotel is the epitome of luxury with regards to accommodation. The 262 rooms are a blend of comfort and elegance, encompassing a variety of opulent options for the discerning traveler.

Amenities include five restaurants and four bars, one grand ballroom, two meeting rooms, a beach and kids club as well as a Thalassa Sea and Spa.

The majestic grandeur of the establishment is felt the moment you enter the lobby, with palm trees dotting the place and delicate lantern lights hanging from the high ceiling.

As I waited for Batoul, the lovely marketing executive of the hotel who would be taking me on a tour of the hotel, I noticed the dominant Arabian flare that envelops the interiors.

Tall, intricately-patterned wooden panes were placed behind the lobby desk, which Batoul told me were hand carved by artisans in the premises of the hotel itself.

After a quick check in to the luxury room I was staying in, I went up to place my stuff. Lanvin toiletries are stacked near the sink of the toilet. The terrace had breath-taking views of the poolside and beach.

The toilet has a separate shower and toilet cubicle. A large LCD screen with a myriad of channels provides entertainment for all ages.

Then I was taken to the different rooms of the hotel. Out of the 262 rooms, there are various Prestige suites and individually themed Opera suites along with one Royal suite. The rest are luxury abodes. All the rooms of the hotel have a sea-facing balcony, minibar amenity, LCD TVs and Bose speaker systems. The Opera suites are namely: Moroccan Opera Suite, Gulf Arabic Opera Suite, Nubian Opera Suite, Indian Opera Suite, Turkish Opera Suite and the Levant Opera Suite.

Each 120m2 Opera Suite has diverse décor to match its theme, along with a private terrace overlooking panoramic scenery and an infinity pool. I was awestruck as soon as I stepped foot into the Moroccan Suite. Done up in a chic Marrakech style, the kaleidoscope of colours identifies with the rich culture of Morocco. ceiling is truly stunning.Given the private element of the room, it

is perfect for those wanting to unwind from the daily grind-of-the-mill without a care in the world. Batoul also mentioned that most popular Opera suite with guests is the Turkish one, which is almost always occupied.

The Prestige Suite has its own class of luxury, beautifully meshing French and Bahraini architecture. The ceilings of these 86m2 suites are typically reminiscent of the old Bahraini Souq style. Again, this is perfect for guests wanting a more private escape, with access to Club Millesime Executive Lounge, where guests can lounge and have their meals throughout the day, away from the interruptions of any sort.

The Royal Suite, as the name goes, is truly fit for a king. Extending over 500m2, the suite has a dining room, a majlis, private office area, a bedroom linked to the terrace and infinity pool, a walk-in dressing room, Jacuzzi, bathroom with a steam room fitted with Hermes amenities. The Majlis and meeting room is available for large gatherings and weddings.

Then we went out to explore the different F&B outlets of the hotel. The five restaurants include Italian eatery Fiamma, all-day dining Saraya, Arabic restaurant Pashawat which also has a lounge and bar with a bellydancer

and live band, Southeast Asian cuisine at the Wok which also offers cooking classes third Saturday of every month and seafood delights at La Mer.

In addition to that, there are bars, namely, Tapas, which is a restaurant and bar, Lagoon bar situated at the poolside, Amber Bar. A French pastry shop, Macaron, serves delectable pastries till late evening.

A Cuban band plays at Tapas and happy hours in Amber prevail between 5-7pm.

The poolside and beach is filled with happy visitors splashing about and lazing in the sun.

The beach, a stretch of shimmering white-sand looking on to the Arabian Gulf, beckons you to unwind in the sun on a lounging chair with a summer cooler in your hand.

The beach is open to the public and hotel guests alike. Standing at the forefront of the beach, you forget you’re in Bahrain. It reminds you more of a postcard from the Caribbean, only this is tangible.

The spa is the first in the GCC to offer sea water therapy, emanating a sense of wellness as soon as you enter the premises. The Thalassa Sea and Spa complex is 2 floors wide, covering 2,000 square meters with 14 treatment rooms. Various treatments and fitness classes are conducted on a daily basis.

Batoul left me to enjoy a scrumptious lunch at Saraya and then head to my room. The service is quick and staff is very welcoming.

The Sofitel is the perfect getaway for those seeking solace within the island. It is the true definition of luxury and is a surefire pleaser for guests of all ages. For room rates and booking, contact: +973 17636363.

Soie at the Sheraton Bahrain HotelSEPTEMBER 201456

Page 59: Sabaya Magazine September 2014

SEPTEMBER 2014 57

An ode to the majestic grandeur of China’s finest fare, Soie at the Sheraton Bahrain Hotel is eminent for its décor as well as authentic

cuisine. The décor is lined with mirrors, Chinese

paintings and lanterns complimented with neutral-coloured seating, lending a Zen-like aura to the atmosphere. Its perennial popularity ensures authentic, perfectly prepared little dishes with a touch of fine sophistication.

The menu is varied with a variety of meat, poultry, vegetables and seafood options to choose from. The amount of spice in each dish is revealed right beside the name of the dish.

Deciding to whet my appetite with something light, I chose Tom Yum soup followed by Butterfly Prawns.

It is a clear soup comprising of fragrant greens, is savory, spicy, and tangy to taste, came in a pretty soup bowl with an intricately etched silver lid. The flavours were in perfect harmony and tasted great!

Butterfly prawns with sweet chili sauce, fried in a batter of breadcrumbs was a crispy delight.

For main course, my gluttonous side decided to show its face and I ordered one of each dish from the main course section – seafood, beef, chicken, vegetables and fried noodles.

It is worth noting that the attendants are very accommodating and always smiling, attentive to customers’ needs.

The food was brought to the table all at once in remarkable crockery placed on mini burners so it remains warm.

For seafood, I chose sautéed prawns with

chili garlic sauce, and asked them to make it medium spicy. It comprised of flavourful gravy and tasted absolutely great.

A Sizzling Chicken Szechuan gave off a sharp, heady aroma. The dish gets its dominant flavour from the szechuan peppercorn, cooked with garlic, ginger, green onions and tender pieces of chicken. It is perhaps one of the best chicken dishes on the menu.

Pao Chow Beef, a popular dish suggested by the attendant, was next on the table. Delectable pieces of beef tenderloin tossed in rich gravy are a surefire crowd pleaser.

Chinese fare is well known for its assorted vegetables and it was imperative to try at least one of the vegetarian options. I chose the 8-assorted vegetables, which came with mushrooms, beans, baby corn, broccoli, cauliflower and more.

The portions of all the dishes are quite generous, and can easily serve two people.

Although I was stuffed, no meal is complete without desert. Banana toffee with vanilla ice cream was presented on a beautiful glass plate. The banana, still hot whilst covered in toffee tasted divine with the cold ice cream, meshing the essence of the two in delightful unison.

Soie, is a classier option among the various Chinese restaurants found on the island. The food and service is going to make sure you become a regular visitor at the eatery. Cooking classes are held every Friday from 10am to 12pm at BD 12.500++ per person.

King of the KitChenHarbouring a love for all

things edible, exuberant New Zealand-born chef Jason Lynn has taken some time out of his busy schedule

to chat to Sabaya about his profession. Having worked with Accor hotels group in Vietnam, he is now looking over the kitchens of the Ramee Grand Hotel and Spa. We find out more about his culinary journey all whilst he gives us a delicious secret sauce recipe at the end of the rendezvous.

How did you get interested in culinary arts and how did you decide on becoming a chef?I have had a love affair with food since an early age. I used to cook with my mother and grandmother at home too. I’m from New Zealand which is a very outdoor-oriented country and we spend a lot of time barbequing and eating outside and most of the fresh produce, meat and fish are readily available.

What is your favourite cuisine to cook and why?I like all cuisines actually and I have a cookbook collection of 450 books of all different cuisines. As a chef I’ve travelled a lot and picked up on so many colourful cuisines around the world. Having worked in many different countries, the way to appreciate a country is to appreciate its food. So I’ve got plenty of favourite cuisines.

What advice do you have for aspiring chefs?Keep an open mind and try to be as calm as possible. Kitchens can be a volatile place and always stay happy. Take feedback from customers as every comment aids in helping you become a better chef. Don’t take anything to heart and be open to learning

new things. You also need to love what you do, that’s how your passion combines with your job to make it a great experience.

How do you stay educated about the trends in the culinary industry? The internet is a very versatile and helpful tool for that. I subscribe to five online magazines from different regions that keep me up to date with what’s hot on the shelves. They are foodie magazines as well as a chef magazines. Besides that, I read through cook books and try out new restaurants.

What do you consider as the most cherished moment of your career?Doing a cooking class in Vitenam for a bunch of Vietnamese orphans. The look on their faces while learning what to put in the food was priceless. It was definitely the most fulfilling. Anything that I do to give back to the community, gives me immense satisfaction. I really enjoy teaching kids how to cook.

What do you do to ensure the quality of food being served to the guests in Ramee Grand?I eat what is served to the guests frequently and dine in the restaurants regularly. I walk around the kitchens and check the walk-in freezer for spot checks.

I make sure I’m communicating with all my chefs and emphasize on quality of the food. We have a meeting each day to discuss about any issues that may arise. I go meet the suppliers so I can see where the food is coming from. I’m not shy about sending stuff back if I think it’s not up to the premium standard.

I believe that direct communication and delegation of various tasks is very important to ensure the quality of the job.

BEAT THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL BLUES

last Note

Kids (and parents) all over the island are gearing up to go back to school as summer holidays draw up to an

end. While some might be thrilled, it can be quite the contrary for others. Going back to class doesn’t have to be a drag. Help your kids beat the back-to-school blues with these five tips.

Dress the partGoing back to school can be a lot more exciting if your kids have fun new clothes and school supplies to show off. Set a budget and allow your children to select some new duds and supplies (that are parent- and school-approved, of course). Set a spaceYour child’s desk may have accumulated lots of non-school clutter over the summer. Take some time before school starts to help your kids clean their desks off/out. Encourage them to make this a Zen space that is void of distraction and conducive to concentration.

Roll back to scheduleIf you’ve let your children›s schedules slack a little during the summer, don’t wait until the first day of school to start getting them back on a normal routine. Simply getting a good night’s sleep can make heading back to school a lot easier - for your child and you. This is a good time to get yourself to bed a little earlier, too. PrepareIf your child is apprehensive about heading back to school, touch base with his teacher a few weeks before class starts and see if you can arrange a meeting for you and your child. Even seeing his classroom before the big day (and knowing where it is at school) can help eliminate back-to-school blues and jitters. Privately discuss any concerns with the teacher before school starts, as well. Talk to Your Kids About Their WorriesEach child has her own source of back-to-

school butterflies. While one child might be most worried about fitting in and making friends, another might be anxious about taking on the challenges of a new grade. Find out exactly what your child is nervous about and don›t dismiss her concerns by saying something like, “Don’t worry” and “You’ll be fine.” Instead, help her think through how she can overcome what’s worrying her, and make sure she knows that you, her teacher and the school counselor will be there to help.

Put on a Happy Face!Parents experience their own set of emotions when the summer ends. You may feel sad about your children getting older, anxious about their new class or worried about how they›re reacting to the new year. To the best of your ability, try to exude confidence and good feelings when talking to your child about school or saying goodbye on the first day. Seeing Mom upset can put a damper on a child’s first-day enthusiasm.
