The couple - who have children Apple, nine, and Moses, seven, together - have splashed out on the four-bedroom, three-bathroom beachside pad, which is located on the Little Dume.

The stunning property, which is called The Garwood Residence, is complete with

heated floors, a top of the range kitchen and a full-size tennis court, according to The Real Estalker.

The 3,650 sq ft estate boasts stunning views of the ocean, a landscaped garden fit for entertaining, and a pebble stone pool.

The inside is just as impressive as it comes with a plush gym and a yoga studio.

L’Wren Scott, a designer and the girlfriend of lead vocalist and co-founder of the Rolling Stones Sir Mick Jagger, has been found dead in her New York City flat, BBC reported Monday.

Police are treating her death as a suicide, although the medical examiner has yet to determine an official cause of death. A spokesperson for Sir Mick said the singer was ‘completely shocked and devastated’ by Scott’s death.

The band is currently on tour in Australia. Scott, 49, born Luann Bambrough, and Sir Mick began dating in 2001. She began her career as a model in Paris and founded her own fashion label in 2006.

Scott’s death comes a month after she cancelled a show at London Fashion Week, saying production delays had left key pieces unready for the show.

Cameron Diaz ‘apologises’ to public for failing to age gracefully

Cameron Diaz has confessed that she feels like a failure in the eyes of the public because she could not defy ageing like they expect actresses to.

According to E! Online, during an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show, the 41-year-old actress said that she feels like she has failed because she didn’t remain 25 for the rest of her life, the Mirror reported.

The blonde beauty asserted that the public makes her feel like it is her fault that at 40 years old she still didn’t look like she is 25.

Diaz added that she feels sorry that she wasn’t able to defy nature.

Drake-Rihanna serious about each otherMusicians Rihanna and Drake, who are fond of each other, have reportedly decided to get serious about their relationship.

Tmz.com reports that multiple sources extremely close to the couple said Rihanna and Drake have gone from casually hooking up to seriously dating. “They’ve decided to give it a serious shot.” Rihanna wants to spend as much time with Drake as her schedule will allow - because he treats her better than anyone she’s ever been with.

They have been virtually inseparable while Drake’s been touring in Europe. Rihanna has spent every single night with him since she arrived on the continent. As for Drake, he’s smitten. One source said: “He’s in the best mood he’s been in a long time.”

When Amanda Seyfried carried a knife on planeActress Amanda Seyfried accidentally boarded a plane with her pocketknife still in her possession because it was undetected by airport security.

Huffingtonpost.com reports that once she realised what happened, she took a photo of it and Tweeted to inform TSA (Transportation Security Administration) so that things like this hopefully don’t happen again. It happened on Friday.

Seyfried wrote: “Dear TSA: This Swiss Army knife wasn’t detected through security and I unknowingly carried it on board. Scary!”

Kellan Lutz turns 29, parties with an elephant

Jamie Dornan says pals disgusted by his ‘50 Shades’ role

Actor Kellan Lutz rang in his 29th birthday in Phuket, Thailand and partied with an elephant.

The ‘Hercules’ star partied at Nikki Beach, Phuket Saturday with an elephant and

a blonde companion who donned a white bikini and angel wings, reports eonline.com.

During what looked like a boy’s trip, Lutz’s bros (brothers) rocked t-shirts that said “A Celebration of Life” on the front and “Where It Happens Phuket;

Happy Birthday Kellan” on the back.

And that wasn’t all. ‘Happy Birthday Kellan’ was lit up on torches in honour of the actor’s big day, and Lutz was presented with a cake topped with lion figurines and huts.

Jamie Dornan has revealed that his friends are disgusted by his role in ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ and have vowed not to see the film.

He told E! News that his friend congratulated him after hearing that he had bagged Fifty Shades role but said that’s going to be disgusting, adding that he won’t watch it, News.com.au reported.

The 31-year-old hunk said that dating Keira Knightley helped him prepare for the fame.

Emma Watson has revealed that even though she has a enjoyed a successful career since childhood, she’s still ‘jealous’ of some of the actresses.

While talking to the Elle US magazine, the 23-year-old star said that there are actresses who have emerged in the last couple of years, and got to emerge as a complete human being, and she feels so jealous that they got to grow away from the spotlight.

I wish Honor would dress her age, jokes Jessica Alba

Post rehab stint, Zac Efron quits party circuit

Jamie Chung wants ‘intimate’ wedding

Actress Jessica Alba, whose daughter Honor loves heels and dresses, wants the five-and-half-year-old to dress her age.

It’s not like Alba, 32, wants her daughter to have poor taste, she just wishes her little one dressed for her age, reports people.com.

“Honor likes wearing heels and dresses,” Alba told People at an intimate fete at Mondrian Hotel’s Herringbone restaurant to celebrate her very first Nylon magazine cover. “I’m like, ‘No! (Don’t you want to) climb a tree?’”

In the past, Alba, the founder of The Honest Company, had echoed similar statements, saying: “For sure I see a mini me. I was a tomboy when I was a kid. Honor is like me grown up. It’s so bizarre.”

Meanwhile, Alba is practical when it comes to daughters’ wardrobe and ensures apparel does not go to waste in the her household, as she is a big fan of letting her two-and-half-year-old daughter, Haven Garner, get plenty of wear out of Honor’s old wardrobe.

Actor-singer Zac Efron has made positive lifestyle changes, after getting out of a rehab a year ago.

The actor now spends his time reading scripts, working out, going to 12-step meetings and honing a new support system, and is no longer a fixture at Hollywood house parties, sources told people.com.

“He cut most everyone out of his life who were part of the party scene,” the source added.

The 26-year-old actor said he feels blessed at a facebook live event, after promoting his new comedy “Neighbors” at the SXSW festival last weekend.

“The Hangover” star Jamie Chung and her fiance Bryan Greenberg have different ideas on how they would like to mark their wedding ceremony. She says she would prefer an ‘intimate’ ceremony. The 30-year-old actress also says Greenberg is better at organising events.

“He wants a big blow out and I want to keep it intimate, so there’s certainly things we need to work out,” contactmusic.com quoted Chung as saying. “We’re equally excited... Actually, he’s better at planning parties than I am,” she added.

Mila Kunis is pregnantThe 30-year-old actress is expecting her first child with ‘That ‘70s Show’ co-star Ashton Kutcher, to whom she recently got engaged. A source told People.com: ‘’They are both very, very happy. It’s still early.’’

The couple sparked engagement speculation after Mila was spotted with a huge diamond ring last month, but the loved-up stars aren’t expected to rush down the aisle in light of their baby news. The insider added: ‘’It won’t necessarily be a short engagement. They haven’t begun planning the wedding yet.’’ Meanwhile, E! News reports that Mila was recently seen at a prenatal class in Los Angeles. The couple began dating in 2012 following Ashton’s split from ex-wife Demi Moore, but they have known each other for years after playing the lead roles in hit 1990s sitcom ‘That ‘70s Show.’ Ashton, 36, is thought to have had a crush on his gorgeous co-star when they worked together, but their romance didn’t blossom until years later.

Chris Evans wants a wife and kidsThe 32-year-old actor admits he’s ready to leave his partying days behind him and start building a family because he doesn’t want to look back on his life later on and regret missing out on those things.

He said: ‘’I want to get married, though I want children--to me that’s the ultimate thing. When you’re old and on your death bed, looking back at your life it’s not going to be the films you’ve made or what you’ve accomplished, it’s the relationships you have. You’re survived by things that matter--the people you love and those who love you back.’’

The ‘Captain America’ star admits he’d much rather spend his nights wrapped up on the sofa at home, rather than out partying with his mates and knocking back countless amounts of alcohol.

Matthew McConaughey was ‘the cutest guy’ as a teenagerMatthew McConaughey’s classmate from Longview High School in east Texas has revealed that the actor was ‘the cutest guy’ in his teenage.

Adrian Harris Forman told People Magazine that the ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ star was always very good looking and a standout star.

He added that the Oscar winning actor was voted ‘most handsome’ in the school, and was an athletic and a charismatic teenager, who was popular among his peers and was a fun guy to be around.

LiLo tells Oprah she’s done with partyingLindsay Lohan went on to tell Oprah Winfrey that she was done with partying after she reportedly partied for 48 hours.

The ‘Mean Girls’ star said that there’s no party that she hasn’t gone to, there is no person that she hasn’t hung out with and there’s no situation that the actress hasn’t been exposed to, the Mirror reported.

The 27-year-old actress insisted that there was nothing left in having a drink for her.

It was further reported that Lohan started partying on Friday night at the cocktail bar at the Beverly Hills hotel, before moving on to the Chateau and she was out in the garden until early in the morning and then the group moved on to a house party in the Hills.

Lohan was back in the party mode at the Chateau again after few hours.

shAILene WoodLeyI can’t really understand this outfit. Although I love Elie Saab, I’m not sure if the pattern on the bodice was intentional or a modern twist to the Superman logo gone wrong. Either way, the only highlight for me about this look on Shailene Woodley is the beautiful gold Rupert Sanderson pumps. Totally drool- worthy!

sCArLeTT JohAnsson Red hot! Scarlett Johansson is a knock out in this siren red fitted silk dress. I’ve heard about your spray painting workshop at the Art Market. Tell me more about it.I learnt spray painting in the States in college and it came natural for me. I did it for a while and grew out of it because it was limited in its scope. Lately, the fad is surging again and everyone is picking up spray cans again. The Culture Ministry, which is organizing the Art Market asked me to do a workshop and since I’m also a graffiti artist, I chose to do one on spray painting. It was very well received and the turnout for the workshops was superb. We had young guys who were just dabbling with spray cans but within an hour or two, they were painting like pros.

What’s your favourite form of art? That’s a difficult question. I’m a surrealist and the longest form I’ve done is classical acrylic brush work.

I love mixed mediums and working on different colours.

What are your hobbies?I like reading and researching for new things, the internet is my winding down world. I also play the guitar to soothe my frazzled nerves after a long day.

What’s your take on art?I’ve noticed over the years that most of the new-age art is just a fusion of different types of art. This piqued my interest and I tried to fuse different forms to come up with something innovative. I think this is what the art scene in Bahrain is insinuating, coming up with something that sets you apart. Being a traditional country, Bahrain is stepping into the 21st century at a rapid pace and become catalysts of progress.

Fusion artist and interior designer Mustafa Halwachi is the personification of the innovative art scene in Bahrain. Multi-talented in the arts, he tells us more about his passion, his notions about surging Bahraini talent and more.

Page 20: Sabaya Magazine April 2014

April 201418 April 201418

What do you think of Bahain’s art scene? This is the sad thing. I’ve travelled all over the Arab world and I can confidently affirm that the strongest art scene when it comes to actual production is Bahrain. Such a tiny kingdom with so much talent and creativity, it’s crazy! But we don’t get much focus in terms of art. This year, however, was the year of art the spotlight was on emerging and present artists, which made quite a big difference.

Bahrain has a lot of wealth when it comes to art, and it makes me happy that artists are doing their own thing and not waiting for anything. It’s quite an underground scene but it’s there and it’s heavy. My sister, an art enthusiast, is compiling a book titled ‘The Curators’ to document Bahraini artists from all walks of life and she’s recorded over 260 artists within a span of two months and there’s more to go. This might help you gauge the amount of talent that thrives on the island.

Do you think the sort scene is Bahrain is following a specific trend? The whole world usually follows some sort of trend because culture is a trend and it is transient in nature. Spray painting is a fashionable fad nowadays, and calligraphy is also gaining eminence. Art in itself is a trend. The human mind evolves, culture evolves and therefore art evolves. It’s the evolution and it’s a constant flow of progressive artistic thinking.

Do you have a role model?Yes, I have many. Salvadore Dali, Mark Ernst and Jean Mitchell Bastiere, to name a few. Banksy is my favourite when it comes to grafitti, and Logan Hicks is my favourite stencil artist.

Locally, I love the works of Abbass Al Mousawi, he’s by far our role model in Bahrain. He’s done so well and he’s so active in the market, and moreover, he’s from my country so it matters even more.

What are your future plans?I am looking into starting a studio and I would love to bring out emerging artists in the future. We have a team of creative people and we are working on a new project, where we are travel around the GCC to show people what Bahraini art is all about.

What message do you have for aspiring artists?Keep on doing your thing and never take no for an answer. Never give up. Come out and show your work. Try to find galleries and pitch in your ideas, meet like-minded people and be involved in the art scene. The world is being pushed into a very dark space, filled with hatred and war. I believe that it is up to us, the happy, creative folks to save it from going in that direction.

success story

Beauty at the hands of

Professional makeup artist and beauty consultant Natalie Semaan is becoming the most sought-after woman with a makeup brush!

Her first visit to Bahrain was in 2003 while collaborating with hair and beauty company Pace e Luce, where she fell in love with its blue skies and azure water.

Living by the motto of ‘Look Good, Feel Good,’ Natalie Natalie gives readers of Sabaya an insight into what inspires her, what she loves most about makeup and what people can learn from her.

Tell me how you got into your current profession? When I was finishing high school, I always had a passion for makeup and beauty in its entirety, including the therapeutic, anatomy and physiology. My mom was a big role model because she was a makeup artist and I used to work with her.

After finishing school in Lebanon, I decided to go to Canada to pursue makeup professionally and I became a beauty consultant and I practiced in the field as a therapist, I worked alongside doctors and opened spas and beauty centres.

I am focusing on the Middle East right now and I’ve studied it very well.

I also take on projects in Australia, Spain,

Canada and Lebanon but I have a passion for this region since I’m an Arab.

Where did you study and what did you pursue?I studied in Marvel and Mount Royal College, where I did my beauty and comprehensive medicine respectively.

Also, I’ve done private courses on electrical epilation, laser, IPL and many others.

What are you focusing on in Bahrain? My main focus in Bahrain and in this region in particular is self image. I have a team which is conducting makeovers for ladies of all ages. I’m incorporating something

Natalie SemaAn

I believe in, which is the ‘Look good, feel good’ theory. I impart this to everyone, from my friends to my clients.

A consultancy with me starts with a makeover, where you can go through your own makeup and get certain makeup tips that compliment your skin, teaching application with easy, quick steps.

How do you choose your makeup brands?I am very specific when it comes to skin products, because I want something that’s long lasting and makes me look good without getting smudged. But besides that, I want something that’s good for my skin. So I always choose products or machines that adhere to these specifications.

For example, I am working with a specific line right now called Inuovi. They do not test on animals and I’ve chosen his line because it’s smart and innovative. It’s made to suit this day and age and is a final product of five different countries- Germany, France, Japan, Italy and Singapore. Their foundation is manufactured in France, their compact powder is made in Japan and so on. Each country uses their best cosmetic potential for their products.

The line also emphasizes on hydrating and protecting the skin, which is very important especially since we are in this

region. They also believe in beauty is simplicity, which is what I believe in. Accentuating your best feature is key. Working on your character and personality is also a must, so beauty flows out from within.

What are you working on in presently Bahrain?I’m working with a few doctors on a project that developed its idea from Lebanon about a centre where clients come into a hospital that looks healthy, and beautiful to get their treatments done. Also, I am working with doctors for more specific consultancy.

I really adore your look of the day, how did you make the choice? I’m a very practical person and I know what compliments my skin tone.

I went for a retro take on the eye, where I chose a winged liner in a purple shade from Atelier Paris. I can play with this look and tone it up or down depending on the occasion.

I love the eye liner look because there are so many different ways to go about it.

What are your favourite brands?I’m going towards a full range on Inuovi. What is your favourite look?Eyeliner, a smart blazer jacket and a top knot bun works perfectly. Chic and elegant.

What do you do in your spare time?I like reading, I read on a variety of things, mainly biographies and business books. I like socializing, cooking and absolutely love shopping.

This is the second time since 2008 Paris hosts the iconic B-Boy battle. The city, home to one of the largest and most dynamic B-Boy scenes on the planet, is the perfect place to bring back the competition, now in

its eleventh year. It is also home to two past World Champions, Lilou (2005, Berlin; 2009, NYC) and Mounir (2012, Rio de Janeiro).

Returning to Bahrain for the third year in a row, the premier one-on one B-Boy battle in the world promises to push participants to their limit, in a scene where the level keeps growing year after year.

The top 16 local B-Boys will battle it out at the Alumni Club in Adliya on Friday 2nd May 2014. B-Boy Pelezinho (Brazil); B-Boy Wing (South Korea) and B-Boy Lil-G (Venezuela) are this year’s judges. Regarded among the top breakers in the world, they will assess the performances based on: technique, innovation and dance flow.

Participants will go on stage paired against one another, and each will have two chances to throw his signature moves. At the end of each round, judges will knock down one, until the last B-Boy remains standing and is crowned Red Bull BC One Bahrain Cypher winner. The local champion will represent the Kingdom in the Middle East and Africa Final, scheduled for the 27th September, 2014 in Algeria.

Last year, 18 year old B-Boy Huey won the cypher title and competed at the Middle East and Africa Final in Amman, Jordan.

2013 marked the biggest year yet for Red Bull BC One, with its eight past champions competing against eight new challengers. Millions tuned in from around the globe to watch the battle go down in South Korea, where Seoul’s own Hong 10 took home his second World Champion belt.

Red Bull BC One was founded in 2004 in Biel, Switzerland. Over the years, the championship has moved from Germany to Brazil, South Africa, France, the USA, Japan, Russia and South Korea. Today it remains a key event in Hip Hop culture, helping to push the art form forward while respecting the original format of one-on-one battles.

Redbullbcone.com represents the largest online network of B-Boys and fans; and the event is home to the biggest Facebook community in the scene, with more than 1.2 million fans. The Finals and World Final will be live-streamed at redbullbcone.com. Find the full Red Bull BC One Cypher schedule online.

Jump Bahrain is an innovative concept of a kid’s gym started by Nofa Hamza in riyadat Mall, a’ali. thi s idea came up she struggled to find a proper workout routine for her then overweight son. Jump Bahrain specializes in gym equipment customized for kids, special routines such as Zumba and Insanity by dedicated trainers. nofa tells us more about the innovation behind the same.

How did you come up with the concept of Jump Bahrain? This idea came up after we have seen the necessity of such dedicated gym to fight the obesity in Bahrain that reaches 69% amongst our children in that age (5 to 15) also these children need to remove their focus from sitting behind the TV and video games and start to move their muscles and shape up.

How many kids do you have enrolled in the gym?We have almost 40 kids in the gym and around 30 more in the sessions, and the number is increasing monthly.

What is the main difference between the fitness equipment used for kids in your gym as compared to equipment for adults? Our machines are built with safety features, the sear with ergonomic back and sensors to ensure correct posture, adjustable seats to accommodate any build, adjustable foot-board to ensure correct posture, exercise counter display and interactive display allows the child to interact with the machine and correct the exercise if it is not performed properly.

What is the most challenging aspect when it comes to working with kids?Unlike the adults, kids need to understand first the importance of exercise, correct eating habits and maintain their health and that is

what we try to teach them in the first place, but to drive their attention all of this teaching process should be done in the most easy fun way by our highly experienced trainers who introduce these information by playing games with them and make sure that they have fun.

What are the different fitness routines and activities offered by Jump Bahrain?Once we receive the child, we take his full body assessment by measuring their height, weight, body fat and then design their set of exercise accordingly. This assessment should be repeated every two weeks to monitor their progress. We also guide them to choose the sessions that are suitable for their needs.

How has the response been from parents of the kids? Both parents and their kids were happy with the results so far especially those who realize

the importance to be committed with the exercise timings and their eating habits at home. One of the kids whom I'm so proud of used to weigh 93kg and after two months of hard work and commitment, he now weighs 87kg and is motivated to get fitter. Also, one of the kids used to have weak arms muscles and could not hold the pen to write long assignments, so we focused on strengthening his arm muscles.

You mentioned something about starting a meal programme for kids, please tell me more about it.As I said earlier, we introduce the kids the correct eating habits that helps maintain their health also with the cooperation from eat-to-fit (a catering services that provides meals supervised by Dr. Fatima Al Haddad, our nutrition consultant), all together to help the kids reach the right weight and body shape not only for losing but also gaining weight in the right way.

Method:PicKle PumPKinCut the pumpkin in a rectangular shape, approximately 10 x 7 cm and ½ cm thickness. On the rectangular cut a square approximately 5 x 5 cm and set aside. Peel the grapefruit making sure you remove the white pith and fillet with a sharp knife.Lightly fry the cumin, add the vinegar and sugar together, bring the mixture to a boiling point and add the pumpkin slices in it.Boil for 20 seconds, remove from stove and let the pumpkin and vinegar mixture cool in the pan.Once the pumpkin is cold, remove the pumpkin slices carefully in order not to break them. Marchesa Luisa Casati, the Italian aristocrat and one of the most legendary and artistically represented women in history, inspired the new CH Carolina Herrera handbag Collection.

An icon and constant source of inspiration during the first few decades of the 20th century, Casati’s extravagant lifestyle, bold fashion statements, and eccentric personality captivated some of the most influential artists and designers of the era including Léon Beask, Paul Poiret, Erté and Giovanni Boldini. Considered to be the world’s first female dandy among the European high society, Luisa Casati was the muse for both renowned portraits and innovative collections, satisfying her desire for immortalization. Casati was quoted stating “I want to be a living work of art.” In the same vein, Carolina Herrera takes inspiration from Marchesa with the new accessory collection.

The genuine Denver leather exterior characterized by its soft texture and flawless appearance is contrasted by the structured, linen-lined interior which contributes to the modern, clean aesthetic of the Casati collection. The bags are marked by the names Marchesa, Luisa and Stampa hidden on the backside of each style making them each unique in design.

Each feature a golden rectangular closure providing a common visual thread for the three different sizes, and gives a nod to Marchesa and her love for extravagant, suggestive jewelry.

The colour tones inspired by the modernist movement are masterfully combined in this collection which, like this particular character, is destined to be an inimitable, one-of-a-kind legend.

Closing New York Fashion Week, Marc Jacobs gave a thoughtfully minimal outing for his fall-winter 2014 collection which marked his first season since his Louis Vuitton departure. While last season showcased dark colours for

spring, fall was all about dreamy shades of cream, tan, light blue and lilac sometimes with colour blocking

or gradient patterns. Models walked the runway in matching short bobs with headbands covering the blunt hairstyle. The Marc Jacobs woman embraced an almost minimal aesthetic for the season sporting long tunics (short and long-sleeved), chiffon ruffle-adorned gowns and bomber jackets to finish the look. Sequin-adorned dresses topped over cropped trousers exude a 1960s vibe as did much of the collection.

Luxora living, breathing museum city

Luxor, eminently known as El-Aksur, was given its name from the southern half of the ruins of the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes.

Luxor has often been called the world’s greatest open air museum, and indeed it is that and much more. There are countless preserved monuments in this city, more than anywhere else in the world. Luxor is divided into three different areas, consisting of the city of Luxor on the east side of the Nile, the town of Karnak just north of Luxor, and Thebes, termed as Waset by the Egyptians, which is on the west side of the Nile across from Luxor.

To say that the Luxor area is a major attraction for tourists in Egypt would be an understatement. It has been a tourist destination since the beginning of tourism. Even in ancient times, during the late dynasties of the Greek and Roman periods, the area drew tourists, and has been doing so ever since. Today, Luxor is well equipped to accommodate tourists with many hotels and, in general, a tourist industry ready and willing to serve the people from across the globe that descend on this area of the Nile Valley every year.

Within Luxor, there are only three main streets consisting of Sharia al-Mahatta, Sharia al-Karnak and the Corniche, situated beside the Nile. The street in front of the train station is Sharia al-Mahatta and runs away from the Nile where it meets the gardens of Luxor Temple. Sharia al-Karnak, which translates to Karnak Temple Street, runs along the Nile from Luxor Temple to Karnak Temple. However, Sharia al-Karnak is known as Sharia al-Markaz where it meets Sharia al-Mahatta, and to the south around the temple it is known as Sharia al-Lokanda. Along this street one will find the colourful signs of restaurants and cafes, as well as bazaars where a variety of Egyptian souvenirs can be found. Of interest is the alabaster, which is plentiful along the West Bank and milled not far from here. Be on the lookout for unique, unusual clay pots that are used by the locals for cooking.

Luxor today is a city of some 150,000 people and is governed by special statutes that allow it more autonomy than other political areas of Egypt. One thing you might notice is that various government and other buildings conform to an ‘ancient’ building code. Particularly, the National Bank of Egypt (located near the Winter Palace Hotel), the spa south of the police station, and the railway station are all designed in a

Page 44: Sabaya Magazine April 2014

April 201442 April 201442

Pharaoic construct. All of this occurred after the Egyptianization of the modern town resulting mostly from the mania that resulted from Howard Carter’s discovery of the Tomb of Tutankhamun. As one might think, the city has all the amenities tourists can avail, including a variety of hotels, bars, nightclubs and restaurants

In Luxor proper on the East Bank, one of the first stops should be the Temple of Luxor built by Amenophis III. Head south on Sharia al-Karnak to reach the temple, which was connected to the Karnak Temple via a long stone processional street called a dromos. The dromos was built by Nectanebo I, and originally was decorated with sphinxes on either side. In front of the LuxorT emple, the dromos is well preserved, and on the way to the entrance one passes by a Roman chapel of burnt brick dedicated to the god Serapis, which was built during the rule of Hadrian. There is a path that leads to the Nile side of the temple where one enters the complex.

After leaving Luxor Temple, head back to Sharia al-Karnak and go north towards Karnak. Down the road, near the police station, is the oldest mosque in Luxor, the El-Mekashkesh Mosque. It contains the remains of a 10th century Islamic saint who, rumour has it, was a monk prior to converting to Islam. The mosque is a popular pilgrimage destination. Here also is the Franciscan Church and its schools, one for boys and the other girls. Beyond this lies a great Coptic basilica.

At the police station, head towards the Nile Corniche. Here, opposite the Mena Palace Hotel you will find the Mummification Museum, which has almost anything you would ever want to know

about mummification. After this, head north towards Karnak.

About halfway to Karnak, you will discover the Luxor Museum. It should certainly be visited if you fancy a well-rounded and educational experience. While this is a small museum, most of the relics are from the surrounding area and provide considerable insight to the monuments you will visit.

From the Museum, head back to Sharia al-Karnak and continue north towards Karnak. After crossing a small bridge one will begin to see the excavated dromos off the road and running through a small village. A little further on you will pass the ruins of the Temple of Mut where another dromos leads to the gateway of the tenth pylon. The road finally arrives at the domed tombs of two saints, Sidi Ahmed and Sidi

Ali, where a road leads past the Department of Antiquities to the main Temple of Karnak entrance. This road is built along a canal that once connected the Nile to the Temple. There was a dock in ancient times, but now all that is left is the quay and the raised dais. Just past that is a red brick Roman dock and past that two paved ramps led to the river bank. They are bordered by stone parapets, and were built during the rule of Taharqa. Past these is the Chapel of Achoris, which received the sacred boat of Amun when it was used in ceremonies.

To arrive at the entrance one follows the dromos with its crio-sphinxes. They have the head of a Ram and the body of a lion and are symbolic of the God Amun. Arriving at the temple, there is a statue of Ramesses II with his son between his feet

To the right is a structure that has red

steps, a red front colonnade and red brick walls. Inside there are pedestals. Inscribed with the names of Roman emperors, that once held their statues. This was a Roman chapel dedicated to imperial worship. After leaving the Temple complex on the left is the Franco-Egyptian Center which has managed the temple complex since 1967. Down on the shore of the Nile is the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifque, or CNRS, which houses the French and the Chicago House, a project of the University of Chicago is near by.

After this, head to the West Bank for a boat trip. This trip had a special meaning to the Egyptians, for it is a journey heading to a necropolis. The Valley of the Kings is as good as any to try first, with tombs from the 18th and 19th dynasties. Outside the Valley of the Kings, the road leads past Antef, named for the 11th Dynasty princes who were buried here. Some tombs can still be seen as one heads towards the Temple of Seti I. Most of what is left of Seti’s Temple is the view. The court is entered by the ruined gate of a pylon and has what is left of a palace on the south side. The road continues south passing Dra-Abu el-Naga necropolis.

The road eventually winds itself westward until reaching the Valley of Asasif. These are 25th and 26th Dynasty tombs. At the end of the Valley of Asasif at the foot of a cliff named Deir el-Bahri is a spectacular complex of temples. The Temple of Mentuhetep I, Hatshepsut and Thotmose II here are a must-see. Much of the architecture here seems so very powerful against the towering cliffs in the background. From here, the road continues past the remains of the Temples of Ramesses IV and Thutmose III, eventually reaching the Necropolis of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna. This 18th Dynasty necropolis sits amidst houses where there are hundreds of holes. And below here, one comes to the famous Ramesseum, built by Ramesses II, a huge complex that took twenty years to complete.

As the road runs along past the remains of Thutmose IV, Merneptah, Ay and Horemheb’s Temples, it finally comes to the huge complex known as Medinet Habu, which is one of Thebes’s major attractions and a must see sight. The gate has square towers and appears almost oriental. Behind the complex is the workmen’s village called Deir el-Medina. Out in the fields near here is the Colossi of Memnon, one of the major tourist attractions throughout time. Southwest of Deir el-Medina is the Valley of the Queens, where queens of the 18th and 19th dynasties were buried.

From here, the road continues past the mud brick to the remains of Amenhotep III’s palace called Malkatta. There is a lake to the east and at the other end of that, a small Roman temple called Deir Shelwit built at the end of the 1st century.

nokia X

nikon coolpix S2800

Microsoft tries to own all the Google juice

An affordable compact camera with plenty of creative shooting options

The Nokia X is the Finnish brand’s big effort to make greater waves into the low, low end of the smartphone market – and it’s enlisted the help of Android to make that happen.

The Nokia X is a phone that comes with a fairly decent spec list for a phone that’s coming in at $120– we’re talking a dual-core 1GHz processor from Qualcomm, 512MB of RAM, a 4-inch WVGA screen and a 1500mAh battery. The live tiles idea is really cool – it’s essentially just a clever way of doing Android widgets, but while other launchers can make things look too complex, Nokia is doing things its own way and making it all seem a lot cooler.

VerdicTThe Nokia X is a hard phone to work out – on the one hand, it’s a super cheap handset and as such has the budget specs you’d expect.

Available in purple, pink, red, silver and black, the Nikon Coolpix S2800 is a compact camera with a decent set of specs. With its 20 million pixel sensor, 5x optical zoom lens (26-130mm equivalent) and 12 creative filters, it’s a budget compact camera, but still offers a number of ways to transform your photos.

Auto shooting modes are the main focus of the Coolpix S2800, with three of the five available shooting options - Scene Auto Selector, Smart Portrait and Auto Mode - being auto modes. The other two modes, Scene Selector (where you pick the scene mode yourself) and Creative Filter give users a little more control over their photos, but not a lot.

There are very few manual options for the user to adjust - exposure compensation, sensitivity, white balance and autofocus modes (single, tracking and so on) are the only exceptions, and the majority of those are only available when using Auto mode.

VerdicTOffering value for money and decent build quality, the Coolpix S2800 is a great camera for those looking for their first compact camera, but it is unlikely to appeal to people who like to have a bit more control over their photos. This camera is frustratingly simple if you have any prior knowledge of photography, but would be great for

someone who is just starting to get to grips with the terminology while still knowing they can get great shots if they don’t feel like experimenting.

If you’re looking for a camera with a longer zoom lens, the Canon IXUS 155 is arguably a better option, as it has 10x optical zoom.

Amateurs and new photographers will love the S2800 - with its creative filters and lack of complicated settings, it’s likely to appeal to people who are looking for something simple and fun to use.

On the other, it seems to be not much better than the Lumia 520, which is a Windows Phone handset and supposed to sit above it in the product line – on current prices, it’s also cheaper.

There are some worries here even for the developing nations: that 4GB of storage could get eaten up quickly, and while Nokia is touting the

ability to add third party apps through other stores, new phones can live and die by app availability and that could kill the Nokia Android project.

The Nokia X is constructed well enough, has a interesting new UI and is breaking new ground – but as a new phone, it seems a bit expensive for what’s on offer.

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4

The Tab Pro 8.4 is one of Samsung’s finest tablets.A charitable sort might call Samsung’s approach to tablets comprehensive, but it could just as easily be described as scattershot. The past few years have seen the launch of 7-inch, 8-inch, 10-inch, and now 12-inch devices aimed at a full range of budgets.

This focus on quantity has arguably come at the expense of quality for Samsung, with no single outstanding tablet coming from the world’s largest consumer tech company.

The company’s new Pro range shows signs of the company re-applying its considerable resources to produce something a little more special.

While the Samsung Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 is expensive and a little creaky, it’s an undeniably powerful piece of kit with a much improved custom UI.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 takes many of the stylistic cues and components from that super-sized powerhouse and packages it in a decidedly more compact and versatile shell. The result is one of Samsung’s best tablets to date.

VerdicTThe Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 won’t be the one grabbing the headlines in the new Tab Pro range, I suspect, but it’s arguably the best of the lot.

Condensed down to this size, the WQXGA display renders everything in super-sharp detail, while the creakiness of the larger tablets is all but gone with the 8.4’s compact shell.

This may well be the best compact tablet Samsung has ever made, but at a price that exceeds the peerless iPad mini 2, that’s not quite enough to rule the roost.

Jawbone Mini Jambox

Jawbone shrinks its Jambox down for the truly mobileIn many ways, Jawbone had a big part to play in the current proliferation of portable Bluetooth speakers. Its original Jambox - and the subsequent Big Jambox - were some of the most popular Bluetooth peripherals of the past few years, combining iconic style with impressive sound in a portable package.

The Mini Jambox brings Jawbone’s approach for striking design to a truly pocket-sized package. While the Bose SoundLink Mini speaker brings superb audio quality to a small speaker design, the Mini Jambox is positively diminutive, at just over 15cm long, 2.4cm wide and just under 6cm high.

Like its larger brethren, the Mini Jambox is cast from a single piece of anodized aluminum, and available in a selection of nine different bright, vibrant colors, with five different patterns drilled into the grill across the front of the speaker.

VerdicTIt’s not the cheapest portable Bluetooth speaker on the market, but it’s not ridiculously overpriced either. The combination of iconic design, solid audio quality and compact size make the Mini Jambox a solid choice for a portable speaker.

Alcosense digital Breathalyser Lite

An affordable and reusable tool for testing your blood-alcohol levelsDrinking and driving is increasingly socially unacceptable, but up to a point it remains legal. And that’s where the Alcosense Digital Breathalyser Litecomes in.

It’s a pocket sized device that analyses your breath for alcohol levels, just like a police breathalyser. Exactly what the purpose of this device is and how it should be used is actually quite contentious.

But in simple terms it gives you a reading that relates to the metrics used in the UK to police driving when intoxicated with alcohol. You can then, in theory, judge whether you are legal to drive. What the device doesn’t do is tell you whether you are safe to drive or will continue to be so. More on that in a moment.

VerdicTOverall, there are two conundrums facing the Alcosense Digital Breathalyser Lite. Firstly, is it accurate?

On that subject we can’t be sure thanks to the disappointing lack of co-operation from Avon and Somerset Constabulary. That said, we’ve seen enough to think the device works well and would function in its intended role.

In other words, we think the Alcosense Digital Breathalyser Lite will indeed give you

a good guide as to whether you are risking driving over the allowed limit.

You’re then left with the very real prospect of still being over the limit the morning after. Inevitably, the government warnings relating to this risk tend to express the worst case scenario regards the likelihood of this happening. But it remains a very real problem and the very problem for which Alcosense chiefly promotes this device.

Whatever, having this gadget on hand will certainly give you a quick sense check the morning after should you be in any doubt. Even if it’s not as accurate as the maker claims, we’re confident it’s good enough to tell you if you are over the limit.

Drop dead gorgeous cat that bellows with a lions roar

Jaguar F TypeIt was the car we’d been waiting far too long for, the spiritual successor to the fabled E-Type. It wowed me: the luxurious style, sports car performance and exhaust note were enough to take my breath away. The first Jaguar sports car since 1974, the F-Type is part of the new vision brought forth under Tata ownership. It employs out an all-aluminum structure with 141 pressings that are riveted and bonded using the latest in aircraft-spec techniques. Get deeper into the gas pedal and the rush of acceleration is accompanied by a glorious exhaust note that rivals anything from Italy.

AUTO REVIEW

OUR 6 POINT REVIEW

1. ExteriorsThere is not a single bad angle on this car and Jaguar has done a terrific job with the details. A relatively tall front end, large grille opening flanked by air intake scoops, and upswept headlamps underlined with LEDs give the nose of the F-Type a sharp, aggressive look. The shape grows sleeker along its shoulder line and along the decklid, where one can find the thinnest baguette-shaped LED taillamps. On the doors, there are no handles to mar the F-Type’s flow; instead they pop out of the doors at an angle with a push of the key fob (or a finger). An integrated and active rear decklid spoiler lifts at 60 mph or above and provides 265 pounds of downforce over the rear wheels. The F-Type convertible is capped by a canvas roof that can be operated at speeds up to 30 miles per hour deploying in just 12 seconds.

2. InteriorsBeautifully stitched leather melds cleanly with robust-feeling plastic and metal trim and the controls all seem meaty and durable in hand. Central air vents that rise from the dash and an Ignis orange start button and shift paddles further increase the cool factor. I’m pleased Jaguar chose to go with analog gauges as it’s simply a classier, more mature appearance. The F-Type is a smallish roadster with a miniscule seven cubic-foot trunk. The sport seats are set deep in the Jaguar’s belly to help lower the center of gravity of the car. Due to this seating position and a high beltline, sightlines are pretty bad and items like the blind spot monitors need to be relied on a bit more than usual.

3. Performance5.0-liter supercharged V8 cranks out an impressive 495 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Its 0-60mph time is estimated to be a quick 4.2 seconds. The V8S at full power produces smiles not just from the brisk acceleration but from the sound of the big engine as it roars

up the gears and crackles back and booms as if two adversaries are engaged in a cannon battle deep within the muffler. it is one of the most impressive factory exhaust systems I have ever heard, and I never grew weary of its snarl. The stiff chassis and suspension tuning earn the real praise. This car is surprisingly balanced at the limit, especially considering how big the engine is.

4. Ride and handlingIn Drive mode, small throttle inputs produce quite a sedate and relaxed ride. At Dynamic Driving Mode, the throttle and shift points were remapped, suspension stiffened and at a certain point, opened the exhaust baffles that really got this party started. The F-Type gets traditional springs, dampers, smarter electronic differential and torque vectoring which grabs a brake momentarily to keep the F-Type on the right line through corners. The resulting stability and confidence it inspires is impressive. The ZF-sourced eight-speed ‘QuickShift’ automatic gearbox can feel a little lazy in its standard setting, but it sharpens up well in Sport mode, and is hard to fault in manual mode, where it gives you full control.

5. SafetyThe F-Type’s aluminum chassis is build to be rigid, it hosts a full compliment of airbags,

and its sheer agility makes it responsive in an emergency maneuver. Safety technology includes Front and Rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitor, a rear cross-traffic warning system, adaptive headlights, automatic high beams, automatic speed limiter, and the usual traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes, brake assist, rollover protection bars as well as cornering brake control.

6. EquipmentFeatures include 20-inch alloy wheels, automatic bi-xenon headlights, headlight washers, rain-sensing wipers and folding mirrors. Also standard are full power accessories, cruise control, automatic climate control, active exhaust control, keyless ignition/entry, color-configurable ambient lighting leather and suede upholstery, 12-way power-adjustable seats, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column, Bluetooth, an 8-inch touch-screen display, a navigation system, and a premium 14-speaker Meridian audio system, auxiliary audio jack and iPod integration.

VerdictBeauty is more than skin deep, but when a car looks as good as this, we should take a few minutes to consider its fine form. It’s also like a British muscle car that goes fast in a straight line but with a added value of competent cornering and brakes. Stomp on the throttle and it’ll light ‘em up real good, as they say in Coventry. Wind your way through twisty roads and it’ll hold on splendidly, with minimal body roll. This convertible is a thrilling blend of style, performance and luxury, and no matter what your priorities are, you’re sure to lust after it.

Authentic Italian delights from the experts Medzo

Serving contemporary and authentic Italian favourites, Medzo is a gem of an eatery located in the Intercontinental Regency Hotel.

The interiors are sleek and chic, entailing metallic geometrically patterned walls paired with bold rotund lights hanging from

just an appetizer and main course. For appetizers, we were served with

Insalata di rucola which is comprised of rocket leaves with parmesan shavings. The peppery flavor of the rocket leaves was complimented by the rich parmesan.

The next appetizer was Caprese salad, which contains yellow tomatoes and fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese, with a drizzle of olive oil and some basil leaves. Chef Adrian explained a very interesting fact about the tomatoes - they were homegrown and ripened to a multitude of colours such as purple, orange and yellow!

The appetizers whet our appetite for the main course and I couldn’t wait to get a taste of what else the chef had in store for us.

The first thing that you immediately associate Italian food with is pasta and pizza, which was the next course of our meal.

We started with a Ravioli ricotta e spinaci

which is homemade ravioli filled with ricotta cheese and

spinach sprinkled with light basil and pine nuts pesto, a bowl of scrumptious mixed seafood risotto and Tagliatelle pasta with tomato sauce and meat balls.

The waiter returned with another two platefuls

of Penne carbonara and Gnocchi. The penne pasta had pancetta, onions and creamy

egg scrambled sauce and the gnocchi was a heady, rather chewy blend of potato with tomato sauce and mozzarella gratin. All the victuals were praise worthy, with each flavour standing out yet blending together gracefully.

For a second dish, we were served with delectable thinly sliced chicken scaloppine breast with white wine sauce, rosemary and black olives.

For a second dish, we were served with delectable thinly sliced chicken scaloppine breast with white wine sauce, rosemary and black olives. The next on the menu was pizza Margherita, topped with mozzarella, tomatoes and fresh basil leaves. Aunthentic to the last slice!

For desert we were served with a divine Crème Brûlée and Panna Cota, an Italian dessert made by simmering together cream, milk and sugar, with a hint of lemon and served with fresh berries. Perfect ending to a lovely meal.

Medzo serves the best of the boot of Italy on a plate! A definite must-visit for those who cherish authenticity and flavour.

Two SeasGerman national, Anke BrAndt, who has been living in Bahrain for the past four years and kite surfed her way into the Guinness Book of World Records by setting the record for the longest distance covered, standing at 250 KM around Bahrain.

She tells us about her love for kite surfing, the 250 KM challenge and how it all began.

Could you tell me a little bit about how you got into kite surfing? I have always been fascinated by wind sports since it is something you cannot control so you have to respect nature. My dad is quite interested in sailing and we also spent quite a few holidays on boats so I’ve been sailing since I was a child. While living in Berlin, I tried my hand at windsurfing but soon stopped. However, five years ago when I lived in New Zealand I saw kite surfing, thought it was interesting and decided to give it a try so I took lessons but had to stop since it was too cold. When I moved to Bahrain, the weather was quite warm which was perfect since you have to spend a lot of time in the water.

Kite surfing isn’t really something a lot of people do especially in the region. Why do you think it hasn’t quite caught on in Bahrain?Kite surfing is actually becoming quite popular but Bahrain is probably a little bit behind and I’m not sure why because it is a perfect kite surfing spot. However, I think it may be due to the lack of beaches. We have instructors but if people could set up kite surfing schools that would be great! I would push for it as it is a beautiful sport which is versatile and not restricting to age so someone who is 16 would not have an advantage over someone who is 35. It is all about technic and tactic.

What made you think of doing the 250 KM Kite surfing challenge?I was wondering how I could challenge myself and picked up a race board since I heard about it being an Olympic discipline and thought it could be something I could succeed in. As a non- professional it’s not so

zig -zag pattern. The tide was also against me and I was trying to go against the wind. These are two uncontrollable forces of nature which was very frustrating at one point but I still completed the record in 11 hours and 55 minutes.

How did you train leading up to the challenge?I did a lot of running, yoga and specific weight training which I did twice a week and three to four times leading up to the event. I did approximately 10 to 15 hours of exercise a week. I was working the first two months so I’d wake up early in the morning and either went kite surfing or did another form of workout. Food also makes a big difference so I basically read a nutrition book and coached myself for three months learning what foods are good for endurance sport and how to calculate my sweat rates to prevent dehydration.

Do you do any other sports? I do a lot of water sports which includes wake boarding and stand up paddling. I also run, do yoga and roller blade in the summer.

What’s the next step for you?I don’t know. We do have some other ideas of long distance challenges l could do. I would probably like to go around Iceland with a snow kite.

intimidating to and currently I am the only one who uses a race board in Bahrain. I started doing long distance trips to Jarada with my friends and enjoyed

it so much that I decided I wanted to go further. I initially decided to go around in 3 days

but participated in a long distance race which Redbull held in Germany. In that even I kite surfed from Germany to Denmark and back

covering a distance of 60 km in under two hours. This is when my friends and I

realized that if I could do that I could surely go around Bahrain in one day

rather than in 3 days. After doing some research we realized the current for the longest distance kite surfed by a woman was 213 km and decided to cover a distance of 250 km which is a little less than going around Bahrain once.

tell me a little bit about the day that you did the challenge.Normally we have very strong northwesterly winds in Bahrain but on the day of the challenge it

was unusually a straight north. So when you look at the map of me kite surfing on the day I formed a
