Since the last issue of the SA

Bowler we have welcomed a new member of staff to Bowls SA. Erin Haines, who bowls at West Lakes, has

been appointed to the position of Development Officer and will be looking after Bowls SA participation, sport development and coaching programs, as well as working with clubs with volunteer management and grants and funding submissions. Erin, who recently celebrated her marriage to fellow West Lakes bowler Mark Haines, is passionate about the sport and will be a valuable addition to the team at Bowls SA and I wish her well in her new position. The March long weekend is going to be a fantastic weekend of bowling on the Yorke Peninsula with the Prestige Medley on the Saturday and Sunday with Moonta hosting the men’s, and Wallaroo Mines and Kadina hosting the women’s. The Monday will then see the annual Schroeter, Kennedy and Under 18 metropolitan versus country events being held at the Wallaroo Bowling Club at the Wallaroo Community and Sports Complex. The District Council of the Copper Coast has invested significantly in the sport in both infrastructure and to attract international, national and state level events to the region and the support of Mayor Paul Thomas and his council to bowls has been fantastic and is greatly appreciated. If you are not sure what to do on the long weekend and want to see some quality bowls, why not consider making a trip to the beautiful Copper Coast and enjoy everything the region has to offer off the green as well. For further information on attractions and accommodation contact the Copper Coast Visitor Information Centre on 8821 2333.

Another upcoming event is the annual Bowls SA Awards Night, which includes the induction of new members into the Bowls SA Hall of Fame. Planning is well underway and this year the prestigious night will be held at the Festival Function Centre at Findon on Friday, May 25. As a result of a review of the event, there have been a number of exciting changes to the format of the night and the award categories. As well as the Coach and Volunteer of the Year Awards, a male and female State Representative of the Year, State Event Player of the Year and Under 18 Players of the Year will be named. The Premier League Skipper of the Year will also be announced along with a male and female Country Carnival Player of the Year and the Henselite Junior Development Squad Player of the Year. Add to these awards the Bowls SA Hall of Fame induction and the night promises to be an exciting evening and a wonderful celebration of the achievements of bowlers over the last 12 months. Tickets are available through Bowls SA and more details of the night can be found on Page 12. All the best for the remainder of the season and I hope that you achieve your goals on the green over the next couple of months.

PRESiDEnT’S MESSAGE[ [

vy Kluske

The MGA Men’s Country Carnival is over for another year and was a great success due, in no small

way, to the wonderful hospitality of the metropolitan clubs. It is certainly a well supported annual event by country bowlers with in excess of 1200 participants who really enjoy the competition and the camaraderie. A big thank you to all involved in managing, officiating and supporting the eight days of the event.Attending the re-opening of the Penola Clubhouse recently was a great opportunity to join with the members and local community in celebrating a ‘new’ start after a tornado devastated the club and township 18 months ago. The spirit of the community was evident on the day and it was fantastic to see the club back on its feet. A report on the opening is on Page 12.

Innovations Seminars being conducted in all Regions by Harvey Jolly and the Innovations Committee continue with the focus on gathering ideas on the growth and sustainability of the sport as a whole. I would certainly recommend that, if you haven’t already done so, you attend a seminar to express your thoughts with the next seminar being held at Balaklava on Tuesday, March 20.With Adelaide hosting the 2012 World Bowls Championships in less than nine months the final stages of planning is well underway. Clubs will be given the opportunity of hosting individual nations in the lead up to the main event and expressions of interest will be distributed shortly to Member Clubs. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase Adelaide and our State to

the World and we look to members to attend and show their support of this important event.I would personally like to wish Kelli Wray all the best for her future and welcome her replacement Erin Haines to the role of Development Officer. With most Pennant competitions in their final weeks I hope that most of you feel comfortable with what you’ve achieved even if it won’t mean a Pennant. To those that are quietly confident of snaring the prize, well done and congratulations.

The feast of International bowls in South Australia continues with the Holdfast Bay BC hosting a Six Nations International Test Series from May 15-20. To avoid a clash with this event which is promoted on Page 33, the date for the Men’s & Women’s Champion of Champions Singles will now be Saturday, May 5, and the Finals on Sunday, May 6, with the Lockleys and Marion Bowling Clubs playing host to the event. To facilitate this new date, all Member Clubs and Members are advised that entries will now close one week earlier, on Monday 23 April 2012.

VOLUnTEER AWARDiAN BAileYClearview Bowling Club’s Ian Bailey has always played a major role in Wheelchair Sports, both with the South Australian and National Associations, so much so that the Club has become the home base for many disability sports associations and host to National and International events for the disabled. As Secretary of the Abattoirs Bowling Club Ian made a significant contribution to the successful merger of the Clearview and Abattoirs Clubs in 1998, going on to become heavily involved in the administration of the new Club and being recognised with an Australian Government Sports Achievement Award for Sports Administrators in 2008.Ian’s initiatives have resulted in a substantial source of external funds being generated from outside groups and individuals. In addition his meticulous preparation of grant applications has proven a great benefit to the Club in successfully progressing projects to improve the Club for all members. This includes the club being successful in obtaining $70,000 for the replacement of a synthetic green in the latest round of ORS funding. Ian has a number of attributes that make him a valuable volunteer including the ability to communicate effectively, his attention to detail, dedication to the task and he is a worthy winner of this month’s APIA Volunteer of the Month. Nominations for the next award close April 13, 2012. refer to www.bowlssa.com.au for forms or contact Bowls SA on 8234 7544.

AeroBowls was born out of a love of the game and a belief that in this day and age it should be possible to create a superior performance set of bowls that comprise bowls with identical trajectory - our true trajectory.

Outcomes on the green will now be purely the result of the bowler’s skill and the green.

Through detailed research, AeroBowls has established one of the most sophisticated and precise manufacturing facilities of ANY industry in Australia.

AeroBowls engineers together with the best bowlers in the game configured the profile of an AeroBowl with features that could only be produced by using the latest digital technology.

We believe its one of the most exciting developments in a game that has one of the longest histories of any modern day sport. And the winner will be bowlers at all levels, as we all have access to a new generation of digital age equipment.

TRUE TRAJECTORYFor the first time in the history of the game we’re manufacturing sets of bowls guaranteed to have the same line every time. This is a result of a highly advanced manufacturing process never before used to make bowls.

Ordinary bowls whether plain ringed or with grips are subject to what is called laminar airflow, whereby the wake of air behind the bowl causes the bowl to drag.

The distinctive AeroDentations® on AeroBowls encourage turbulent airflow. Air (wind) is moved away from the bowl by the AeroDentations, which assists your bowl to follow your intended line.

In the 1930s the makers of golf balls realised the wind cheating effect of dimples. Smooth golf balls quickly became an historical oddity.

AERO DENTATIONSThe Most Advanced GripIn terms of looks, the most notable difference between an AeroBowl and an ordinary bowl is the AeroDentations on every AeroBowl. Not only do the AeroDentations have a positive aerodynamic effect on the journey of the bowl, but you can hold the bowl in the correct position without it slipping.

This is different to an ordinary bowl which has deeply etched grips. These deep grips are subject to chipping, can be uncomfortable, and can catch the wind.

Kelvin Kerkow OAM has always played with a bowl with plain rings - now he uses an AeroBowl, with AeroDentations and he’ll tell you it’s the biggest advance ever in being able to hold a bowl perfectly.

MATERIALSAeroBowls are made from melamine. It’s the same material used by other manufacturers and it’s from the same source.

SPONSORSHIPSAeroBowls is a major sponsor not only of players but also competitions including the AeroBowls Queensland Premier League, Premier 7’s, and Reserves. We also sponsor the state of the art covered green at AeroBowls Stadium, Cabramatta BC. “We are going to support bowls and we hope bowlers will support us,” says Aero CEO Walter Jacobs.

The dominance of Adelaide’s Scott Thulborn over State Events in 2011/12 continued with an emphatic

25-11 win over West Lakes’ Mark Haines at Payneham in late January to claim the Berry Bowling Systems Men’s State Singles title. After already securing the Open Singles and State Pairs in late 2011, Thulborn’s

red hot form in the State Singles all but assures him the State Event Player of the Year Award for season 2011/12. After flying through his section of the final 16 his Semi-final opponent was his State Pairs team mate Adam Forbes of Marion, whilst Haines was pitted against Adelaide’s Brett Davis. At Payneham on Monday morning unseasonal wet and blustery conditions

made shot selection the key in tricky conditions and Forbes got away early against Thulborn, before he fought back hard to claim a gutsy 25-21 victory. Next door, Davis and Haines were going shot for shot and after Davis narrowly missed his chance to draw the winner on the penultimate end,

the match went into a final end at 24-all. Haines drew

close early and made Davis play the shot required for victory. One last attempt at a conversion for Davis narrowly missed, handing Haines a spot in the showdown with Thulborn 25-24.In the blink of an eye however the Final was over, with Thulborn bolting to a 15-0 lead. Haines clawed back into the match but ultimately the gap was too big, handing Thulborn yet another State title. In the Women’s event, great things certainly do come in small packages as Marion’s Mary Selfridge celebrated her move to metropolitan bowls with a thrilling, marathon 25-23 win over Ascot Park’s Liz Gooda. In arguably one the longest State Finals seen, the match pushed close to its fourth hour before Selfridge claimed the shots required on

Thankfully fine weather prevailed for the opening of the new clubhouse at the Penola

Bowling Club in January, 18 months after a tornado demolished the clubhouse, left members in disbelief and devastated the close knit community.About 150 bowlers and visitors heard how, despite the daunting task of rebuilding, with generous financial assistance, support from local suppliers and proceeds from a disaster fund especially set up by Bowls SA to collect donations from Member Clubs, the club rallied and focused on the future. The Club’s former president Scott Degenhardt, who was a driving force in the rebuilding, said he was humbled by the kindness of the local community and other bowling club communities.Bowls SA President Ivy Kluske

reflected “It’s the true Australian spirit in helping our mates out when they are in trouble”. Mr Degenhardt also spoke highly of the club’s sponsors and former Club Secretary Margaret Hanel who had been “in it up to her armpits”. Federal Member for Barker Patrick Secker also spoke before the ribbon was cut and everyone entered the new clubhouse through the front door, signed the guest book and enjoyed afternoon tea. What it shows is that the Club will not be beaten and demonstrates the strength of the wider community to join forces and help out in a crisis.

Why have the world’s best bowlers made the move to AeroBowls?

“For the first time ever I know that every bowl in my set is exactly the same thanks to the advanced technology used to make AeroBowls. They are proven to be more accurate and this gives me greater confidence. I’m used to plain bowls but I am a convert to the AeroDentations - for both the effect on the bowls performance and the feel in the hand - the bowl comes out as smooth as!

I give Aero 11 out of 10… its that big a breakthrough.”

Kelvin Kerkow OAMCommonwealth Games Gold Medalist

“Its about time our sport started catching up with the technology advancements of others sports like golf and tennis to enhance our game. Aero’s True Trajectory features are designed to minimise the effect of the wind on your bowl – this is a long overdue revolution in bowl design.

I think it’s a turning point in the history of our game and I am thrilled to be playing with a bowl that I know is the best modern technology can produce. Quite simply the concept of the AeroBowl was too compelling for me to ignore.”

Claire DukeWorld Champion

“Some of my bowling friends were a bit taken aback by the design of my AeroBowl, but once I explained it to them they could quickly see why I couldn’t get my hands on them fast enough.

The AeroDentations are such a logical development - golf ball manufacturers figured it out in the 1930’s when they started making golf balls with dimples to reduce the effect of the wind.

As Kelvin says having a set of bowls that, for the first time ever, has exactly the same line is like a dream come true for a professional bowler… and indeed every bowler!”

The first round of the annual Test Series between the SA Under 18 State boys and girls and their

Victorian counterparts kicked off at Ascot Park Bowling Club in scorching conditions. With the conditions of play modified to cope with the heat, at the completion of the first round of the Triples and Pairs the boys were very close to victory in both disciplines, only missing out by a couple of shots while the girls had a strong start with convincing wins in each. In the afternoon the Victorians continued their strong form winning the boy’s Singles and with another close game in the Fours, SA only went down by three shots. The SA girls had a great day with Renee McPharlin winning the Singles, taking the girls to six points overall. The Victorian girls however dug deep

to take an outstanding 10 point win in the Fours, to give the Victorian girls their first win for the day. After Round three, Victoria had maintained their dominance over the SA boys in all formats. The South Australian debut players of Jake Cook and Marc Scott were still trying to adjust to the higher level of competition while Victoria’s more experienced players maintained consistency throughout the challenging day. The SA girls were also challenged by the Victorian girls in the Triples with the visitors running out victors. However, the experienced pair of Breeanna Dickson and Renee McPharlin dominated to gain an excellent win in the Pairs. The players and officials took advantage of the shade and drinks with eskies filled with ice and the

newly renovated and air-conditioned Ascot Park clubrooms providing a welcome retreat in-between play. Despite a better showing from the lads and a Singles win to Luke Brind, the Victorians win in the Fours by three shots meant the Victorian boys secured the second Test and won the series. With SA on 1.5 tests to Victoria’s 0.5, and a strong shots lead, the SA girls were quietly confident of taking the series. The girl’s Fours won well with a 15 shot victory (24 – 9), but in an exceptionally close game Renee McPharlin went down to Stephanie Priest 20 - 21. At the start of the third Test the results were split with the Victorian boys and SA girls on two tests each. An 18-14 win to the Victorian boys in Triples was offset by a 19-14 win

to the SA boys in the Pairs. In a similar story the girl’s Triples went down 19-8 but again the Pairs recorded a win 22-16.In cooler conditions the sixth and final round was completed and with a win in the boy’s Singles, a draw in the third and final test gave our lads some heart, in what was otherwise a dominant performance by the Victorian boys who ended the series with 2.5 Tests to SA’s half a Test. The SA girls came home with a full head of steam, winning both the Singles and Triples to give them their second test and the series; the final score line a reverse of the boy’s results SA 2.5 - VIC 0.5.

The MGA Men’s Country Carnival is the biggest event that Bowls SA runs with in excess of 1,200

bowlers from across the State (and Broken Hill) participating. The 2011/12 event was another fantastic eight days of quality bowling and socialising in near perfect bowling conditions.SinglesKadina’s Bruce Hines claimed his first Country Carnival title after defeating Mt Gambier RSL’s Graham Ellis to take home the Bob Greenslade Trophy in a thrilling Final at Somerton. After appearing on the final day on several previous occasions, Hines returned the trophy back to Kadina, joining clubmate and two time winner Roger Spry on the list of winners. Earlier in the day, Hines stamped his authority on the Singles event with a 25-14 Semi-final win over Minlaton’s Corey Wildash. Wildash led the semi 10-5 before Hines pounced to book his spot in the final. Ellis was even more convincing in his Semi-final, never headed in a 25-10 win over Renmark RSL’s Malcolm Inglis. The Final saw Hines trailing Ellis early (6-10 after 10 ends) before a count of two and four saw him put his nose in front. The match then seesawed before Hines claimed a three on the 19th to take his biggest lead of the match at 20-15. With Hines close to victory, the following end got the huge crowd into a frenzy when controversy struck. Ellis was clearly awarded two shots following an umpire’s measure but both players and marker Ray Schroeder recorded one shot. It was not until four ends later that the match came to a brief pause to correct the scorecard, which by that time saw Ellis hit the lead for the first time in 11 ends at 21-20. To Hines’ credit, he held his

nerve through the drama and finished off with counts of one, two and two to claim the Final 25-22.PairsThe consistency of Port Elliott’s Dean Clohessy threw the Country Carnival Finals into organised chaos when he qualified for both the Pairs and the Fours Semi-finals and a decision was made to delay the Pairs Semi-finals until 12.30pm.ETSA pair Ian Long and Timm Thompson led early, before getting caught against Zinc Broken Hill’s Barry Hooker and Peter Gageler. After 11 ends the game was even on 12 all but Long and Thompson powered away to claim a 19-12 win over the tough Broken Hill pair. In the other semi, Birchmore’s Phyl Whyte and Stephen Davidson put the result beyond doubt early by leading 19-4 after 11 ends over Port Elliott’s Lance Cleve and Clohessy, but Clohessy and Cleve fought hard before going down 20-10.In the Final Long and Thompson scored a five on the fifth end to lead 10-1 before the KI pair reeled off 12 of the next 15 shots to tie the Final at 13-all with four ends to go. A two and three on the 12th and 13th ends saw Long and Thompson pull in front before a five on the 14th to Whyte and Davidson again tied the game with one end to play. A great lead bowl from Ian Long was the difference in the final end to secure the title for the ETSA pair and Thompson’s second after successfully teaming with Carl Schapel in 2007. FoursThe Country Carnival Fours shield donated by Bowls SA Life Members Vic Brown OAM and Murray Gerschwitz OAM will stay in Region 6 for another year after Jervois’ Andrew Stasinowsky

skippered team mates Len Gommers, John Obst and Des Kluske to a popular 21-12 win. In the Semi-final Stasinowsky recorded a comfortable 24-5 win over Loxton’s Mike Nugent, Graham Huppatz, Terry Thurston and Peter Kimber. While in the other semi Port Elliott’s Chris Monk, Peter Alexander (Victor Harbor), Roy Malkin and the unlucky Dean Clohessy accounted for Murray Bridge’s Paul Smart, Leon Crane, Tim Hughes and Sandy Zarantonello 27-10, after trailing 9-0 after four ends. After nine ends of the Final the score was close (10-9), however a five on the 11th end pushed it out to 17-9 and a subsequent three on the 13th put the win out of reach of the Fleurieu four. Without playing the final end, the Jervois combination claimed a 21-12 win over the Port Elliott four. After qualifying in both the Pairs and Fours finals, repeating the feat achieved by Barry Magor and Mark Underwood (BHAS) in 2010/11, Clohessy was unable to claim a title but went away with well earned Runner-up and Equal third prize money.Bowls SA would like to thank all those that contributed to the success of the event, especially host member clubs, and acknowledge the support of David Millington and MGA Insurance Brokers who attended the Finals and made presentations to the winners.

Sports Centre - Proud Supplier of Bowls SA’s High Performance Team

If first impressions count, then a clubs uniform is perhaps the single most important aspect of its appearance. An outstanding presence on and off the green is vital on two fronts: from an outsider’s perspective, a high-quality, well-presented uniform speaks volumes for the clubs values; a reflection of how it seeks to portray itself to the wider community. Internally, the uniform is an important measure of clubs pride, playing an important role in maintaining player, coaches and administrations morale.

Sports Centre Pty Ltd is pleased to be the preferred supplier of Bowls SA’s and the High Performance Team. As one of South Australia’s leading manufacturers of sporting, corporate and school wear, operating for over 35 years, we have the industry knowledge, staffing resources, local manufacturing capacity and commitment to outstanding customer service to meet and exceed your clubs uniform requirements.

years, we have the industry knowledge,

inwomeN’SIn what is being hailed as the closest Women’s Country Round Robin since the formation of Bowls SA, Eyre Peninsula claimed their first title since 1994 with a thrilling last morning victory at Modbury. After a slow start, which saw the West Coast girls go down to eventual Wooden Spooner’s Upper North in Round 1, they reeled off wins in five of the final six games to claim the 2012 Bowlers Den Women’s Country Round Robin on five wins, one game clear of North Eastern, Yorke Peninsula, Lower North and South Eastern.Going in to the final round on Friday morning, six of the eight regions had a chance for victory, however with Eyre Peninsula playing Yorke Peninsula it was evident that the winner of their clash would be set to take the coveted title. Yorke Peninsula came out confident, however the Eyre Peninsula girls showed their fighting spirit and playing more consistent bowls over the closing ends were able to claim a nine shot victory and the 2012 event.Defending champions Fleurieu & KI had a carnival to be forgotten. After leading the competition after day one with two wins, they struggled to only win one of the remaining five matches, and finished the four days in seventh position. Upper North finished eighth with their only win coming in the first round at Ascot Park.Eyre Peninsula Skippers Sandra Blacker, Pam Edmunds and Eileen Fitzgerald all went into the final day with a chance of winning the top Skipper’s award.Pam Edmunds’ 13-all draw with Merrilyn Lovelock and Blacker’s 10-13 loss to Bev Mullins gave Eileen Fitzgerald a glimmer of hope for the individual honour, after she accounted for Di Milner 16-10. However, it was quiet achiever Sue Lloyd’s North Eastern team of Eileen Argent, Barb Taylor and Gloria Burns who took the award following a 17-13 win over Upper North’s Judy Underwood. Her six wins for the week, and superior shots differential, saw her just pip Eyre Peninsula’s Fitzgerald to take the title.

meN’SA Thursday afternoon draw with Fleurieu & KI was all that was required for North Eastern to take an unassailable lead into the final morning of the 2012 Bowlers Den Men’s Country Round Robin. The scene had been set for North Eastern from Round 1 on Tuesday after they convincingly accounted for defending champions Yorke Peninsula. Andrew Hill started off the carnival with a classic 24-13 victory over Country Carnival Singles Champion Bruce Hines. Hines did however bounce back that afternoon to claim a 42-14 win over Charlie Disanto, including an eight, in the highlight of the event.Led by Hill and Kubank, along with the Riverland’s Peter Kimber and Garry Pursche and Broken Hill’s Peter Gageler, the undefeated Region 4 finished three points ahead of Yorke Peninsula, whilst Fleurieu & KI finished third with four wins and a draw. Not being able to replicate the performance of their women, Eyre Peninsula finished last, with their only win coming against Lower North on Tuesday afternoon at Grange.Individual honours went to the Yorke Peninsula rink of Robert Natt, Nick Shepherd and Ken Wilcox Skippered by Daniel Glazbrook, who recorded seven wins from seven starts.Eyre Peninsula’s Gerard Perone almost spoilt their party on the final morning, before going down 18-20. South Eastern’s Deane Wilkinson also went into Round 7 undefeated, however was no match for Fleurieu & KI’s Peter Alexander 28-21 and Yorke Peninsula’s Steve Eichenberger again had a successful Country Round Robin, going away with six wins. The Women’s event was ably managed by Region 2’s Annette Rowntree, Joy Kitto, Pam Woodward, Audrey May and Merrilyn Lovelock whilst Bowls SA Life Member Kenn Rogers took control once again of the Men’s event, in what he is calling his final appearance. Let’s wait and see on that one! Bowls SA would like to acknowledge the support of The Bowlers Den and thank the eight hosts clubs and all of the volunteers and officials that gave up their time during the event.

More bowling clubs across SA are building safer and healthier environments for players and

members than ever before with 36 clubs now accredited with the Australian Drug Foundation’s Good Sports program.Good Sports is a national program working with sporting clubs to manage alcohol and ensure the focus is on sport. The program aims to create a family friendly culture and reduce alcohol related harms both within the club and wider community. As part of the program, clubs work through three levels of accreditation and must provide a smoke free environment, develop safe transport strategies and look at alcohol alternative fundraisers. One club reaching milestones with Good Sports is the Port Elliot Bowling Club who recently became the first bowling club on the Fleurieu Peninsula to reach Level 1 accreditation with the program. Port Elliot Bowling Club Publicity and Promotions Officer, Bob Henry, said they joined the program to benefit members and gain a greater understanding of

alcohol management. “Good Sports reassures our members who work behind the bar they are meeting liquor licensing requirements, while relieving some of the pressure from committee members,” Mr Henry said.“I would recommend other clubs take up the opportunity to join Good Sports. It’s free, bar staff can access low cost training, and it is good to have more club members aware of the responsibilities that go hand-in-hand with a liquor

license,” he said.SA Good Sports Regional Manager, Scott Edgecombe, said alcohol was a leading cause of preventable illness and death in Australia and Good Sports is helping clubs build stronger, healthier communities.“By participating in Good Sports, clubs are demonstrating their continued commitment to providing a safe, healthy and fun environment not just for players but members, families and the community,” Mr Edgecombe said.Good Sports also offers subsidised Responsible Service of Alcohol courses at local venues to make training more affordable and accessible to clubs. Research shows that on average, Good Sports clubs are increasing female members by 11% and growing their non-player membership by 17%. Clubs are also increasing their revenue

The Australian Open has just finished lighting up the greens at Darebin, but the bowls spotlight will soon

shift across the border to Adelaide.South Australia has already seen world class competition in recent months with the 15 nation Asia Pacific Championships, and as the year progresses three of the sport’s biggest events will take place in the state. The SA International Series and Trans Tasman will serve as a prelude to the 2012 World Championships. The SA International Series will be staged at Holdfast Bay Bowls and Croquet Club from Tuesday, May 15. The event pits six of the world’s strongest bowling nations against each other over six days, with five men and five women competing across the singles, pairs, triples and fours disciplines.Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Scotland, South Africa and Fiji will lock horns in the series, with eight gold medals up for grabs. The finalists in each of the Asia Pacific Championships deciders could meet again in every discipline except the women’s pairs and triples. From September 17 Australia and New Zealand will continue their time honoured rivalry with the 34th edition of the Trans Tasman tournament at the Lockleys and Holdfast Bay bowling clubs. The two nation’s best players will enjoy an opportunity to warm up for the World Championships on the same greens while trying to write their own chapter of the fierce sporting rivalry between the two nations.

After the Trans Tasman battle comes the challenge from the rest of the world. Australia and New Zealand will be joined by players and teams from 24 nations in the sport’s premier event. With both individual and national glory on offer against the best the world has to offer the Australian team will be battling to earn the coveted number one national ranking ahead of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The event runs from November 24 to December 9. In the lead-up to Glasgow the three events in South Australia will be placed firmly under the microscope.

the New oNeSEvery year new people come to Clubs, through encouragement by a family friend or neighbour, for the social interaction or to play Night Owls. But how many of these people actually become members of the Club and play pennants? The initial impressions of a Club are the essential elements to the growth of membership and participation in the sport. Does your Club have a procedure for welcoming a new bowler to your club?As a Coach, do you have a plan for mentoring each new member to teach them the fundamentals of the game and assist them to realise their potential? Regrettably, many Clubs do not have such processes in place.A good exercise is for Club members to put themselves in the ‘shoes’ (flat soles of course) of a new member and assess what they would like to experience at the Club on the first visit. Would you want to: Be introduced and welcomed into a

friendly environment. Have someone to show them the club

facilities.

Be contacted by Club personnel to organise a time to be coached by an accredited coach.

Making a Club successful and promoting accredited Club Coaches can be done by ensuring the following are in place: A list of Club Coaches is available

on the noticeboard with their names and contact details and availability, for members to pass onto anyone interested.

Inform Coaches of the details of any new members so they can make the first contact and offer their services.

All members are aware of this procedure therefore ensuring that all new bowlers are provided with the correct information.

whAt to teACh?Many coaches seem unsure as to where to start the coaching process with new bowlers. Once again, it’s a good exercise to put yourself in their position and think back to when you first started in the sport. Most people would’ve heard a range of things about the sport such as it’s a slow game, it’s challenging, it’s for the older generation, there’s lots of rules and so on

and so forth. The initial Coaching session needs to be focused on enjoyment and encouraging the individual rather than stressing the intricacies of delivery and rolling the jack.Listen to your student and gauge what information or level of coaching they’re ready to receive. Some preliminary steps for a new bowler are: Safety is the number one priority so

identify any potential risks around the green

Show them how to place the bowl in their hand comfortably

Stand them on the mat Aim at the right boundary peg Step, bend and roll. It’s as simple as that! Teaching the bias of a bowl is easy. Let them deliver a few bowls and they’ll soon work out what happens when they use the wrong bias!Starting with basics will ensure they learn the fundamentals and a basis for building their skills with subsequent sessions focussing on correct stance and delivery.Remember that old saying K.I.S.S. – ‘Keep it Simple Stupid’.

Homeshare is founded on the belief that people have a right to live in their own home with as much autonomy and independence as possible. Homeshare is an intergenerational scheme for matching older Householders with Homesharers, who live in the home for no rent in exchange for approximately 10 hours per week of practical assistance such as cooking, shopping, laundry, gardening and caring for pets etc, along with companionship and security.

Whilst no two arrangements are alike, there are reciprocal advantages for both participants. A comprehensive assessment process, including reference and police checks for Homesharers, ensures each living arrangement meets the needs and requirements for both Householder and Homesharer. Homeshare SA currently has government funding for coverage throughout the Adelaide Metropolitan area, for eligible Householders 65 years and over.

Under 18 Quad series |

The girl’s fours team were the standout performers in the U/18 Quad Series held

recently at the Sorrento Bowling Club in Western Australia. The girls finished the three day competition undefeated with three victories, highlighted by a 16-10 defeat of the powerful NSW Four.Up against tough competition, the girl’s team achieved their best results against their WA rivals, securing victories in the Triples and Pairs, only losing the Singles against powerhouse U/18 Australian representative Kristina Kristic. In her first time as Under 18 Girls’ Coach, Penny Landherr was pleased with the performance of her side and the experience gained over the three days. The boys, under the direction of Leon Crane, were competitive

but were only able to secure three victories. The most significant win was that of the Triples rink of Luke Brind, Jake Prior and Jake Golding who had a convincing 17 shot victory over NSW with a 30-13 result. The Pairs combination of Brandon Whiley and debutante James Bodner also played well to secure a 14-10 win against WA. However, the main battle was between the Eastern States rivals of NSW and Victoria who only needed a win in either the girls’ Pairs or Triples to take the title. NSW demonstrated their dominance in both disciplines to take the titles.

High Performance[ [HiGH PERfORMAnCE AUStrAliAN SideS ANd SUper 6 teAmS NAmedIn a difficult and highly competitive selection the Bowls SA Men’s and Women’s Super 6 and Australian Sides Championship teams have been named by the State Selection panels. The men’s team includes debutants Ken Holtham who has shown strong performances throughout the pennant season and Duane Edwards who through consistent performances has earned his right to represent the State. The women’s team sees Judy Brooks make her debut. A well deserved selection and reward for persistence and consistent performance. As with all selections, team compatibility, players with specific roles in specialist positions and the need for strong leadership, has been taken into account.Bowls SA Men’s Coach, Dave Stockham, believes that strong performances from our front end players is vitally important. “Our leads hold the key; if we can get bowls in the head early we have quality

back end players who can build on this. A good start in all games is crucial.” Stockham said. With Faye Luke having Bowls Australia commitments, Lynton Modra will take the reigns as coach for the State Women during the Championships and is excited by the challenge and believes that the side is primed for a good result. “It is a great opportunity personally, but it is about our bowlers playing their best when required, I have confidence that our women can deliver.” Modra said.Congratulations to those who have been selected to represent the State and all the best for the upcoming competitions.

The Championships will be held at Broadbeach Bowling Club with the Super Sixes on 18 and 19 April, and the Australian Sides Championships 20 - 24 April.

After a break for lunch the battle resumed with Hills continuing their good form to stay ahead of Lower Murray and Southern Mallee. However, there was very little in it overall and the final game was to be the decider. This time Lower Murray were able to add 10 points while Hills gained only eight but the end result was a win to Hills with 36 points and +95 shots while Lower Murray also had 36 points only produced +33 shots for second place. Southern Mallee was not too far behind on 24 points for the day.Ray Schroeder presented the trophy to Manager of the Hills team, Fred Dorr, who was clearly very happy to take care of the trophy for another year.

The Morphett Vale members congratulate all five ladies on their wonderful achievements.

regioN 12Lockleys Grand Classic In a new initiative Lockleys hosted their first ever Ladies’ Shingleback Grand Classic tournament on 5 February. The generous sponsorship was made possible by the Shingleback family who have a long association with the Club. The Grand Classic date was chosen to coincide with the Men’s Country Carnival to give country ladies the option of attending whilst visiting Adelaide. More than 120 ladies demonstrated some remarkable resilience to play through wild, unseasonal and unpredictable weather and at the end of the day 28 lucky ladies shared the $2,000 prize pool with teams from Payneham, West Lakes and Grange taking out the three major prizes.Bill Green, Lockleys Club President, and his all male team of very handsome waiters transformed the Club into Shingleback colours creating a sea of orange, black and silver. They served food and drinks with great finesse, and worked tirelessly all day to ensure the guests were relaxed and indulged in between play. Our next Ladies Classic in February 2013 will be even bigger and better, and hopefully less windy!

VolUNteeriNgCurrently before Parliament is the Work, Health and Safety Bill. This Bill is important for a number of reasons, but one has to question whether ideology has gotten in the way of pragmatism. The current Act has had its critics such as the fact that there is inadequate concern for compensation for the injured. The purpose of these pieces of legislation are to make the workplace safer. One of the greatest incentives to make things safer is the knowledge that someone is looking over your shoulder if you make a mistake. You tend to be a little more careful. The current Act has worked particularly hard since the Labor Government has decided to increase the number of prosecutions that have been occurring in regards to workplace incidents since 2009. The fines imposed on those prosecuted have been substantial such that a small businesses offender often cannot afford the fines that are imposed. The fines of course go to general revenue and whilst there is provision for some compensation it is very limited and not adequate enough to compensate those who suffer a loss. The National Labor Government has national harmonisation in mind in a number of areas including Workplace Safety Laws. In an ideal world national harmony amongst laws is a very good thing. But the reality is there are demographic, social and economic reasons why the national harmonisation of laws does not always work particularly well. The new Act has created a very real

debate about the effect this will have on the liability of volunteers. Eminent persons, both legal and political, have suggested that there is a real risk that volunteers will now be exposed to prosecutions whereas is in the past this has not necessarily occurred. The Minister responsible has suggested that it was never the intention to capture volunteers or that there is no change towards volunteers under the new Act. What is evident of the old Act is the increased prosecutions of fellow employees along with the company responsible for what occurs. This has happened in a number of instances. Employees would rarely have the means to satisfy the fines that are imposed being tens of thousands of dollars in many cases. Before a new found zeal for prosecutions occurred later in the last decade, an employee being prosecuted for workplace safety breaches was not common. If the interpretation of opposition parties and Law Society are to be accepted as viable and not hysterical, then there is a risk that volunteers would be caught by the new legislation if a prosecuting authority wished to do so in the course of his or her prosecutorial discretion. That is what worries.Community Clubs throughout Australia including bowling clubs and organisations of all types would not exist without the contribution made by volunteers. It is part of the Australian way of life. Relying on an authority that says “we would not do that even if we have the power to do it” is not the way forward. Power is not contained by relying on benevolence. It is contained by checks and balances built in to the legislative framework if in fact you have to make these changes, which is after all the first question to answer. Are we doing this because the old Act was broken and did not work? Or are we doing it because someone with a strong sense of ideology wants to make it all the same throughout the country? Or do we rely upon the exercise of common sense by statutory authority with the power to prosecute you into financial oblivion? It has been suggested to ensure that volunteers should be exempted from being prosecuted for breach of the Act. If the Act is not intended to capture such instances of negligence in the workplace then there should be no

opposition to this suggestion which comes from the Law Society President Ralph Bonig. The Act also takes away the right to silence. There is no justification for that. In case of workplace laws, that is just expediency at work and is a cost to citizens’ rights. There is no place for the right against self incrimination and the right to silence being revoked in the context of a workplace investigation. It strikes no balance to remove this right supposedly in the public interest and it is no answer to the criticism of this particular provision to say that information obtained cannot be used against that person in civil or criminal proceedings. The reality is that it can be used for a number of purposes quite apart from investigations. It is also no answer to say that the erosion of this right is found in the Environment Protection Act, the Local Government Act and the Fair Work Act. That just means they are all wrong. The Bill creates a more complicated and lengthier piece of legislation than previously existed in the name of national consistency. It remains to be seen whether or not volunteers will now have a greater scope of liability pursuant to the terms of that Act and its final form. What can be said however, there appears to be different views on that expressed by the Law Society and by the Minister for Industrial Relations. It is to be hoped that the Upper House reviews the Bill, in particular the provision which erodes citizens’ rights and the issue of liability of volunteers. Interestingly it is proposed that officers of the authority are exempt from civil liability and prosecution for acts done in good faith and it is difficult to understand why it cannot extend to volunteers who also provide the community with a huge benefit. Worth pondering on a Saturday afternoon.

1. What is the difference between a team and a side?

2. The club champion withdrew from the club fours without being constituted. May he/she be used as a substitute for a new bowler who is unable to play in a subsequent round?

3. As a result of a drive the jack flies into the air, rebounds off the rink number and finishes on the rink 20m from the mat line. What is the position?

4. The jack is on the boundary line. A bowl in course tracks its way through the adjoining rink up to the jack. It touches the jack moving it slightly. The bowl comes to rest outside the boundary line. The bowl is dead and is removed. Does the jack have to be replaced, having been moved by a bowl subsequently declared dead?

5. A delivered bowl comes to rest on the green and in contact with the jack, which is in the ditch. It is claimed that as the bowl is live and is in contact with the jack in the ditch, it is a toucher. Is this correct?
