Reyes, 38, who competed in 14 seasons on the PBA Tour, won his lone Tour title in dramatic fashion in the 2006 Motor City Classic in Detroit where he bowled the 18th televised 300 game in PBA Tour history in the semifinal match against Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III before going on to defeat Wes Malott in the championship match 255-238. Reyes, of San Bruno, Calif., cut back on Tour competition in recent seasons to concentrate on his pro shop busi- ness and coaching. Most recently, he finished sixth in the 2010 PBA Tourna- ment of Champions, 21st in 2012 and 37th in 2011. “It is a sad day for the PBA and bowling,” said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark. “You hear descriptions about people all the time as being ‘great guys.’ Well in Tony Reyes’ case, that is an understatement. No one who ever met Tony Reyes didn’t like Tony Reyes. He was a great bowler, a unique talent with a gift of spreading the virtues of the game, a wonderful friend and the sadness we feel is indescribable. GREENDALE, Wis. - The United States Bowling Congress is forming a cooperative task force with com-panies that make bowling lanes to comprehensively analyze how issues relating to the sport’s playing surface affect scoring and credibility. The USBC and Manufacturer Lane Surface Task Force will consist of USBC research technicians along with representatives from synthetic bowling lane manufacturers. The group’s first meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 17 at USBC Head-quarters in Greendale, Wis. Discussion topics for the meeting are expected to include lane surface friction, lane hardness specifications, surface roughness, use of an optical testing device and submission of lane surface samples for annual renewal by USBC. “USBC is creating this task force to get the key people involved in the process for future testing and re-search we have planned in this area. Those studies may lead to new speci-fications or other changes in synthet-ic bowling lane surfaces,” said USBC Technical Director Neil Stremmel. “Research and testing of bowl-

USBC Task Force to Study Bowling Lane Surface IssuesFirst meeting scheduled for Nov. 17 in Greendale, Wis.

ing lanes is one essential function of maintaining the credibility of the sport,” Stremmel continued. “A lane is the playing surface for bowling just as tees, fairways and greens are in golf. Like bowling balls and pins, lanes must meet strict guidelines so the sport is fair for all bowlers.” USBC recently added a new spec-ification relating to the hardness of a synthetic lane surface. All new syn-thetic surfaces submitted to USBC for testing and approval must meet a minimum Sward Hardness reading of 35. That specification is a result of a new test procedure developed by the USBC Specifications and Certifica-tions team, which analyzes surface friction and bowling ball footprint size in the readings. A Gauge R & R study, a statistical method recommended by the American Society for Quality, was used to determine the minimum limits. It was the first time USBC or its predecessor organizations devel-oped a specification for the hardness of a lane surface. USBC seeks manufacturer volun-teers for task force USBC is inviting manufactur-

ers of synthetic bowling lanes to join the USBC and Manufacturer Lane Surface Task Force. Inter-ested parties should contact USBC Senior Technician Dave Sprager at [email protected] or (800) 514-2695, ext. 3410 no later than Wednesday, Oct. 3. As with the ball task force, manufacturers agreeing to join the task force are responsible for making all arrangements and costs for attending meetings.Bowling ball task force a working model One reason USBC is forming the bowling lane task force is because a similar study group created to ad-dress bowling ball research has been valuable and successful. The USBC Bowling Ball Specifi-cations Task Force - comprised of representatives from 13 bowling ball manufacturing companies and USBC staff - was formed in 2005. Since that time, the task force has worked co-operatively to address bowling ball performance issues and their impact on the credibility and integrity of the sport. One major successful outcome

This sponsorship is for all league bowlers and the responsibility lies in the bowlers hands to take advantage of this program. Do not expect to hear announce-ments in your centers. We cannot guarantee there will be flyers or infor-mation in your centers. But what we can guarantee you is this; the free entries are there, for you the bowl-ers, every league, every night, every week. Doesn’t matter if your league has 2 teams or 44 teams, there will be 1 male and 1 female winner. We will try diligently to supply each cen-ter with flyers containing information

on this sponsorship. The ABT will not ask the individual centers to help pro-mote nor will we ask league officers to help promote. Any assistance from the centers or officers will be greatly appreciated and help spread the word more quickly. The beauty of this spon-sorship is that it will be driven by the bowlers and nothing will stop this ball once it gets rolling! The ABT Phoenix branch has also began using a tour-nament format originally created for the Las Vegas Branch. Bowlers can now enter $25 Win-A-Spot squads that offer a more cost ef-fective path to the $1,000.00 1st place each weekend. Included in this format is the ever popular $5 Sneak-A-Peak option. In the wake of the tragic death of popular PBA champion Tony Reyes, an outpouring of “what can I do to help?” messages have flooded the PBA office, Facebook and other com-munity forums. A number of tributes and fundrais-ing programs to benefit Reyes’ family are under discussion, but one fund-raising effort that is already in place was created by Chrissie (Beamish) Kent and her husband, 10-time PBA Tour champion Doug Kent. Chrissie Kent has launched a national fundrais-ing effort through “Scentsy,” a direct-sales company founded to market wickless candles and fragrances. The Kents also have established a not-for-profit bank account in their hometown of Newark, N.Y., to benefit Reyes’ wife Nicole and daughter Gianna. “When we heard the news about Tony, Doug and I thought there had to be something we could do to help Tony’s family. He was such an amaz-ing individual,” Chrissie said. “You don’t really know how many lives you have impacted until something like this happens, and Tony had an impact on thousands of people.” To make a lengthy story shorter, Chrissie (who represents the product line) developed a promotion through Scentsy called “Buddies for Tony.” The program involves a stuffed ani-mal called a “Scentsy Buddy” with a zippered back where a scent pak is in-serted. Each animal normally sells for $25, but there is currently a two-for-one promotion (two Buddies for Tony for $25) – and all proceeds are being

donated to the “Buddies for Tony” bank account at Lyons National Bank in Newark, N.Y. ● If you want to purchase “Buddies for Tony” - go to: https://supersafes-cents.scentsy.us. Below Chrissie’s photo on the website, there is a “My Open Parties” header. 1) Click on the “Buy from Party” to the right of the Buddies for Tony list-ing. 2) Next, scroll down the page to Scentsy Buddy Collection and click Scentsy Buddy where you will be di-rected to the list of Buddies. 3) Click on “Build a Multi-Pack” where you see the dog and lamb. Choose both of the animals you would like to purchase and add them to cart. 4) You will see Scent Pak (purple tab) above the Buddies. Choose a scent pak and the company will ran-domly select a second scent pak for you. 5) The Scentsy Buddy program will be available until Dec. 10 or until in-ventory is sold out, whichever occurs first. ● If you want to participate, but don’t want the stuffed animals: ship them to Chrissie Kent and the animals will be donated to a children’s hospi-tal, holiday toy drive or another suit-able charity. ● If you would prefer to make a cash contribution to benefit Tony’s wife and daughter, send contributions payable to “Buddies for Tony” to: Bud-dies for Tony, c/o Chrissie Kent, 725 West Miller, Newark, NY 14513.

SEATTLE (Sept. 10, 2012) – The Professional Bowlers Association’s experimental regional “animal pattern” championship series has produced 35 paid entries into PBA World Series of Bowling IV and a significant increase in the average number of entries in PBA Regional tournaments between March and August of 2012, PBA Di-rector of Regional and Senior Tours John Weber announced. The inaugural animal pattern se-ries featured Cheetah, Viper, Scorpi-on and Chameleon Championships in each of the PBA’s seven regions (the Shark pattern, the fifth lane condition in the series, was not used in the first-year program). Each event offered an optional entry program, allowing play-ers who elected to do so to compete on specific lane conditions for a paid World Series entry. In addition, the top player in overall competition points in each region – whether or not he paid the optional entry fees – also received a World Series entry. The animal pattern program was introduced by the PBA during the 2008-09 season to provide the bowl-ing public with a method to easily dif-ferentiate between the variety of lane conditioning challenges professional bowlers face. It has served as a cen-tral part of the World Series of Bowling since the WSOB’s inception in 2009, producing an annual series of animal pattern championships. The animal patterns also are featured in the PBA

Experience Sport Bowling league pro-gram conducted by the United States Bowling Congress, providing grass-roots league and tournament bowlers opportunities to test their skills on the same lane conditions used in PBA competition. The new regional tournament se-ries drew a total of 1,991 entries for 28 events – an average of 71.1 en-tries per tournament which represents a nine percent increase compared to entries in the more than 170 PBA Re-gional tournaments conducted over the past year. The Cheetah events drew the highest number of entries in five of the seven regions while Scor-pion Championships drew the fewest entries in four of the seven regions.

2012 PBA WEST REGIONAL ANIMAL PATTERN CHAMPIONS(results below include the tournament winner with player who earned optional WSOB berth noted in parenthesis; overall points include the top five players per region who had not won a WSOB entry in an individual event) Battle at Black Oak Casino Cheetah Open: Dennis Horan Jr., Temecula, Calif. Don’t Blame the Laneman! As bowlers we often want to place blame on everything else but our-selves. Some of the excuses I have heard in the bowling centers are; “the lanes were too dry”, “the lanes were too oily”, “it’s too hot”, “I couldn’t car-ry”. These are all legitimate concerns in certain circumstances. However more often than not if we truly reflect on our personal performances (my-self included), and be honest with our-selves, the blame ultimately should go on ourselves. For instance, if the lanes are too oily, it is up to us to slow down and adjust to the environment that we are bowling in. The fact is that the lanes are NOT going to be exactly the same from week to week. It is virtually impossible to re-create the exact same variables, environ-ment, and lane conditions from week

to week. There are many factors that can cause the lanes to be different from week to week. The Professional Bowler’s Tour which has perhaps the best lane maintenance program in the nation cannot get the lanes exactly the same from week to week and tournament to tournament. The lane surface is probably the biggest factor when put-ting down lane conditioner and trying to put out the same shot from day to day and week to week. In addition to lane surface weather and humid-ity can affect your lane conditions as well. This is especially true here in Arizona. One of my pro shop employ-ees had pointed out that in our winter leagues the weather conditions out-side are dramatically different from the first week to the 36th week. In August temperatures and humidity here in Arizona are completely differ-ent than they are in December and in May when the seasons traditionally end. August temperatures are 110 plus with humidity while December and January temperatures are 40 plus degrees lower with less humidity. These dramatic changes in weather and humidity change how lane con-ditioners are applied and how the ap-proaches can also change becoming more slippery or tacky. So the point here is we should take it easy on the “laneman”. Most of these people are hard working people who want the lanes to play exactly the same every week. Trust me when I say they don’t want to here all of the complaining and they all strive to put out the same conditions every week for us.

What ball is right foryou? Bowlers come in all shapes, sizes, ages and varieties. Because of this the bowling ball manufacturers have made a wide variety of bowling balls from one’s which go straight to balls that hook a great deal. The question here is do YOU have the right ball for YOUR game? One of my biggest jobs in the Pro Shop business and as a top bowling coach is to make sure my customers and my 200 plus students have the proper equipment in their hand to do the job! For the extremes (junior bowlers and senior bowlers) the weight of the ball and the grip are absolutely crucial to their success. As you age into your 50’s, 60’s 70’s and beyond, muscle tone and muscle mass deteriorates year after year and thus changes need to be made as strength and ball speed are lessened. As I tell my older stu-dents, “father time is undefeated” so we need to take some measures to keep playing. So make sure you have the correct “tool” in your hand when you are bowling. It is crucial to your success as a bowler!

Team USA’s Chris Barnes and Kelly Kulick earned the gold medals September 25, 2012 in the inaugu-ral World Tenpin Bowling Association World Singles Championships in Li-massol, Cyprus. Kulick earned the title with a dra-matic 228-226 win over Latvia’s Diana Zavjalova, while Barnes took down teammate Tommy Jones, 212-198, to win the men’s title. In the women’s championship match, Kulick entered the final frame needing two strikes and nine pins to lock up the win. After carrying a light strike to start the 10th, Kulick went high on her next shot but the 4 pin fell very late for the second strike, propel-ling her to the title. “To go out and dominate all week long and make it to through to the final shots in the 10th frame and coming up clutch is really what I wanted to show up and do,” Kulick said. “The competi-tion this week was really strong, but I came all the way to Cyprus and got the job done.” Barnes pulled way from Jones down the stretch with strikes in the seventh, eighth and ninth to lock up the win. Jones earned the silver med-al for finishing second. “I know I didn’t win money like in a PBA tournament, but you don’t get very many opportunities like this to win a world title against a world-class field,” Barnes said. “I find it much more special at this point in my career than I might have at an earlier point in time. I really cherish a win like this.”

Kulick, Barnes Win World Singles Championships

In the semifinals, Barnes survived a tough match to beat Colombia’s An-dres Gomez, 246-244, while Jones knocked off Osku Palermaa, 259-199. On the women’s side, Kulick defeated Malaysia’s Esther Cheah, 212-207, while Zavjalova beat Mexico’s Aseret Zetter, 237-212. The semifinal losers shared the bronze medal. Team USA’s Shannon O’Keefe lost a tough quarterfinal match, 3-2, against Cheah. In the best-of-five match, O’Keefe took a 2-1 lead before dropping the final two games 257-224 and 268-222. The World Singles Champion-ships, which featured a maximum of two players from each country with 44 countries sending representatives, was created to bridge the gap between the other WTBA World Championship events, which feature full teams. The WTBA World Championships for men and women will take place in 2013 in Las Vegas, while the WTBA World Men’s Championships will be held in 2014 and the WTBA World Women’s Championships will take place in 2015, both in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The cycle begins again in 2016 with the second World Singles Cham-pionships.

After a one-season hiatus, former Miss USA Kimberly Pressler will be back with the PBA as “laneside re-porter” for ESPN telecasts from the PBA World Series of Bowling in Las Vegas, Nov. 2-11, and later in the sea-son, at the fourth annual Chris Paul PBA League All-Stars event. “I’m so excited; I’m honored to be coming back,” Pressler said. “I love being part of the PBA family. It’s won-derful to be part of such a monumen-tal event, with bowlers coming from around the world. Where else do you have people coming from so many countries for an event like this? “The thing that really struck me when I did the World Series in 2010 is that there is a lot of technique and hard work and practice that is needed to get to this level,” she added. “It’s amazing, too, that there is so much camaraderie among the players. It’s such a great family atmosphere and it’s such an amazing group of athletes putting on a great show. I’m thrilled to

be part of it.” Pressler, who once worked for the U.S. Department of Energy at a nucle-ar power plant, has hosted television programs for ABC, MTV, ESPN, Fox Sports, NBC and the Speed Network. She has covered events ranging from the ACIS Fitness National Champion-ships to the Traxxas TORC truck rac-ing series, from the Red Bull X-Fight-ers series to the X-Games. She made her PBA debut in a similar capacity during the 2010 event in Las Vegas.

SEATTLE – ESPN “World Series of Poker” co-host Lon McEachern, who made his debut in the Professional Bowlers Association broadcast booth as play-by-play announcer for the 2012 PBA Summer Shootout series, will join PBA Hall of Famer Randy Pedersen as the PBA’s telecast team at the start of the new ESPN television season which begins in December. McEachern is the newest addition to a distinguished list of announcers who have called PBA action over a span of more than five decades while Pedersen will celebrate his 12th anniversary as ESPN’s PBA Tour color analyst. “Ironically, I first met Randy when I was sports director at KCOY in Santa Maria, Calif., and we covered the PBA Tour event in 1986 in Union City where he won his first PBA Tour title,” McEach-ern said. “We covered him pretty exten-sively during that tournament and I con-tinued to follow his career after that. “Our paths didn’t cross again until we worked together at the PBA Sum-mer Shootout last summer, but when we met again it was like we were old buddies.” McEachern, who has served as co-host for ESPN’s World Series of Poker telecasts with analyst Norman Chad since the show’s inception, has cov-ered a variety of ESPN shows since 1994, including the Tour de France, X-Games, World Cup Skiing, billiards and K-1 Kickboxing. Prior to his work with ESPN, McEachern called sporting events such as inline skating, martial arts and outdoor recreational activities for NBC, Fox Sports and the former Outdoor Life Network. McEachern received a Golden Mic Award for his radio work in Southern California and was nominated for an Emmy for his X-Games play-by-play coverage. “As an avid sports fan my whole

life, the weekends were often filled with watching sports and the PBA Tour telecasts were a can’t-miss show,” McEachern added. “The PBA Tour has always been in the upper echelon of prestigious sports properties and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.” During a 25-year career on the lanes, Pedersen earned his place as one of the Tour’s top players, winning 13 PBA Tour titles. His skills led to his selection as the 35th greatest player in PBA history as part of PBA’s 50-year celebration in 2009, followed by his induction into the PBA Hall of Fame in 2011. Since becoming the PBA Tour’s color analyst in 2001, Pedersen has witnessed many memorable moments in PBA history, but counts the major championships as the most memora-ble. “What has been the most memora-ble for me over the past 12 years has been covering some of the greatest majors in PBA history,” Pedersen said. “The past three seasons have been good examples when you look at Kel-ly Kulick becoming the first woman to win a Tour event at the Tournament of Champions in 2010; Mika (Koivuniemi) winning the TOC with a 299 in the semi-final match in 2011, and Pete Weber’s dramatic fifth U.S. Open title this past season. You can’t beat those.” Pedersen incorporates his experi-ence as a player, knowledge of the game and a mixture of humor and commentary to keep PBA Tour fans in-formed and entertained. “You try to not talk above or below the audience, but right in the middle,” Pedersen said of his role as color ana-lyst. “I strive to bring a player’s perspec-tive to the audience in a fun and infor-mative manner to enhance their viewing experience.”

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Wel-come 2 Bowling program, a collabora-tive effort by the United States Bowl-ing Congress and the leading brands in the bowling industry to engage first-time league bowlers, returns for the 2012-13 season with more to offer those new to the sport. “We surveyed last season’s pro-gram participants and more than 85% said they planned to return this sea-son,” said Kevin Terry, USBC Chief Revenue Officer. “Each year we have about 300,000 adult bowlers join a league for the first time; in previous years, more than half decided not to return. We needed a way to engage new bowlers and we believe the Wel-

come 2 Bowling program is accom-plishing this.” The Welcome 2 Bowling program, which started in the 2011-12 season, has two components: •Program partners Brunswick, Eb-onite, Storm and 900 Global each of-fer a ball for the promotional price of $59.95, an incredible value for a mid-performance bowling ball. •A coaching lesson from a USBC certified coach. For the 2012-13 season, the coach-ing component had been upgraded to a free, 30-minute lesson. Bowlers also will be able to go online for video tips from the top coaches in the game. Veteran league bowlers, and those

Welcome 2 Bowling to Offer More for First-Time Bowlersin the industry such as pro shop op-erators and center managers, un-derstand the importance of proper-fitting equipment and coaching. They should encourage new league bowl-ers to take advantage of the Welcome 2 Bowling program because retaining bowlers not only will strengthen their league, but also the sport. “Anyone who plays a new sport needs to see improvement in their game; otherwise, they tend to move on to something else,” Terry said. “By providing some coaching and the proper equipment, we believe the new bowlers not only will feel more com-fortable on the lanes, but will begin

to develop their game and are more likely to stay involved.” The survey also showed nearly 50% of the bowlers who participated in the program last season purchased additional equipment – bags and shoes were the main items – from the pro shops, thus generating new customers for the pro shops, bowling manufactures and bowling centers. The Welcome 2 Bowling program once again will be offered exclusively to 2012-13 season USBC members who have not been members the last three years. Go to BOWL.com/Welcome to learn more about the program.

The Tucson Bowlerettes will be celebrating their 35th Anniver-sary at the luncheon. On behalf of Hope Williams, Presi-dent, all the officers and the board of directors we would like to thank all of the ladies who bowled this year. As always ladies let’s try and grow our membership, invite your friends to join. See Eloise Fowler for applica-tions.

Looking for a good sanctioned men’s scratch league for the 2010/2011 season? If you are at least 50 years of age, or will be before the season ends in April 2011, and you average 165 and up, you would en-joy bowling in our well-established league, starting our 19th season. Our league is the BRC Over 50 Men’s Senior Scratch league, and bowls on Wednesday nights at 9:00 P.M. for 36 weeks. Last season we had 16 teams, and there are 3 men on a team. No team can enter our league with a team average over 600. We bowl at Brunswick Camino Seco,

Attention Senior Male Bowlersand are generally finished bowling by 11:00 P.M. We wish to thank 3 companies that made generous donations to our prize fund: John Willingham’s com-pany, Long John Silver’s; E. Linwood Smith’s company, Environmental Planning Group; and Brunswick Rec-reation Center, Camino Seco, Kathy Vessey, manager. For more information about our league, please call: Tom Owens (520) 760-3476, League Secretary, or Art Lundeberg (520) 296-9281, League President.

Welcome and we want to let you know how glad we are to have your join a merry band of bowlers. We had 2 guests, as this was our invi-tational tournement and they were Ju-lie Menard and Dot Plummer. I hope Julie and Dot decide to join us soon. On September 15, 2012 there was a 3-6-9 tournament at Golden Pins (correct me ladies if I was wrong on this location as I was unable to bowl

in the tournament) The winners for this tournament were:

Division I Division IILynn Maynard 559 Mary Lipsy 614Eloise Fowler 546 Ellen Derenburger 596Sue Maloney 544 Barbara Mazur 580 Betty Barlow 535 Nancy Peterson 573Linnea Bass 519 Carlene Gorham 571

Congratulations and good bowl-ing. Prior to this tournament was a Board Meeting. I believe there was a vote regarding having 3 divisions versus only 2, I will confirm this in my next submission. Let me check with Hope Williams our President so stay tuned, details to follow. Our organization is looking for en-thusiastic bowlers who would like to bowl once a month with a fantabulous group on ladies and have an oppor-tunity to bowl in most of the Tucson bowling centers which will improve your confidence and scores when you compete in other tournaments like the City, State and National tournaments. Until next time.

ARIES (March 21-April 20) You’re on fire! This month is really your time to shine with the new Lunar year in Aries. Everything seems to be going your way and you’re having a great time. Try to take more breaks and avoid running around in between turns. Stay focused, grasshopper.

TAURUS (April 21-May 21)If spring is not your favorite season, it’s definitely Fall. With Mars opposite your natal Sun, now is definitely a time when you need to pay more attention to your technique. Be careful not to resign midway through and stop try-ing because things don’t go your way. Breathe.

GEMINI (May 22-June 21)Your fellow air sign Libra is having a lot of fun with you this month. It feels like everything’s going fine, but you lose your concentration when it counts and get mixed results. Distraction is everywhere in October. Do your best to avoid it and you should be fine.

CANCER (June 22-July 22)With the transiting Moon-Jupiter Sex-tile, things are looking up. You defi-nitely want to get out there and start networking. Cancers are pretty likable people when they’re not avoiding the world at large. Engage in small talk and you’ll be surprised by who you meet.

LEO (July 22-August 23)With Saturn’s recent move into Scor-pio, be sure to conserve this month. You’re doing well, but don’t overthink or throw your ball with extra power. Be careful of tennis elbow and be sure to eat before you play.

VIRGO (August 23-September 23)Venus makes a harmonious Sextile to Saturn and gives you an opportu-nity to put all the pieces of the puzzle together. Solutions to problems are much clearer and you have the tools to improve your game. October is a definite wildcard month for you.

LIBRA (September 24- October 23)Librans turn into powerhouses dur-ing October since this is their astro-

logical month. Unfortunately, this isn’t the month to let your guard down. It’s not about the technique, but the ex-ecution. Stay very focused and polish your ball.

SCORPIO (October 24-November 22)Things are going pretty well for you right now except for maybe a thing or two. Saturn just entered your Scorpi-onic territory so now you really have the ability to hone in and focus. Pay close attention to where you aim and you should notice a difference in score.

SAGITTARIUS (November 23-December 21)Mars in Scorpio has sort of been put-ting a damper on your body lately, and if you’ve been feeling like you’re not what you used to be, this will all change when Mars enters Leo later in October. When this happens, try not to burn the candle from both ends. Pain management is helpful.

CAPRICORN (December 22-January 20)The Lunation Cycle completion that took place on the Full Moon in Aries creates flowing, helpful energy to give you an extra punch in the game. Just when you think you’re tired and done playing, you’ll gain a second wind and strike out. Watch out for coupons and avoid paying higher prices.

AQUARIUS (January 21-February 19)Pluto in Capricorn forms an interest-ing parallel to your Sun that results in unexpected surprises. October will be all over the place; be prepared for a roller coaster ride of fun! It’s really anyone’s guess if your ball will go into the ditch or make a strike.

PISCES (February 20-March 20)You feel like you’ve been swimming around aimlessly in an ocean without direction, purpose, or meaning. Your ruler Neptune has been void in its do-micile Pisces for the past few months, but the good news is the recent Har-vest set forth a course of events. Don’t just go through the motions; create some depth to your game.

SEATTLE ( Sept. 20, 2012 ) – To keep pace with its growth as a bowl-ing ball manufacturer, MOTIV Bowl-ing has upgraded its involvement as a PBA Registered Product Company to “Full Registration” for the 2012-13 season. MOTIV is among a group of bowl-ing product manufacturers that en-roll in the PBA Registered Product program to make their brand-name products eligible for use in PBA com-petition at all levels, and receive the benefits of having their logos and/or other product identification displayed on ESPN-PBA telecasts and other PBA platforms. “Our involvement with PBA is be-coming increasingly integral to our marketing efforts as we have made great strides in the quality and perfor-mance of our products,” said MOTIV Vice President of Marketing Scott He-witt. “There are a lot of opportunities available with PBA that represent a huge value for us.” PBA offers eight categories of in-volvement at four levels for compa-nies to enhance exposure for manu-facturers: Full registration allows for unlimited use by all players of approved bowling balls and accessories excluding grips and shoes in all PBA competition. For televised events, non-contracted players may use equipment but may not wear the logo unless an incentive has been posted for all competitors. Limited registration means a maxi-mum of seven players, including re-gional and PBA50 Tour players, may wear that brand’s logo in competition.

Grassroots registration means products may be used only in PBA re-gional or PBA50 Tour competition. Special registration allows play-ers to wear the logo if an incentive is posted or if a player is under contract with the company. Previously, MOTIV had been a Limited Registered company, but upgraded its involvement to “Full” to take advantage of PBA’s expanded domestic and international activities. “There’s a huge upside if we win on TV because we know that grassroots bowlers pay attention to what they see on TV and that has an influence on what equipment they purchase,” Hewitt added. MOTIV’s player staff for 2012-13 will include three-time PBA Tour champion Dick Allen, Lee Vander-hoef, Brett Spangler and Jake Peters who will begin their season with PBA World Series of Bowling IV at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas Nov. 2-11. In addition to exposure on ESPN telecasts of the PBA Tour, Registered Product companies gain exposure from several other PBA properties including the PBA’s Regional and PBA50 Tours, PBA.com, PBA’s online bowling channel Xtra Frame, and so-cial networking platforms such as Fa-cebook and Twitter. “Upgrading to a fully registered company and maximizing the oppor-tunities with PBA is an extension of the growth of our company,” Hewitt said. “We feel the time is right to step up our involvement as we take our product line to the next level.”

With all the negative talk these days about bowling and how it’s dy-ing it is nice to report on a positive that bowling can do from time to time. On Sunday September 16,2012 the Riverside Hotel and Casino lanes in Laughlin, Nevada held a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Foundation. We had a chance to interview a few of the participants and tournament direc-tor . We spoke with Marine veteran of 30 years Paul Lass who said “I think it was a good tournament and a good turn out, I wish there were a bit more people but it was a great tournament and it went off well.’” His comments on the Program were “I think it’s a great program for recognizing the ef-forts of people that have been injured, but unfortunately I don’t think it gets enough support from the higher echelons of govern-ment.” We can all try to change that. Paul Lass bowled well and pleased with his score as a scratch bowler in a no tap tournament and was en-

Paying it forward; Wounded Warrior Foundation

thusiastically waiting for the next op-portunity to bowl for the Wounded Warrior Program. Riverside Bowl will now be hosting a no-tap tournament once every year. Hurrah for Riverside Bowl. The fund raiser was a success and according to Jackie Emmons, this years tournament director, rais-ing the awareness here locally for the national program and also that $462

Everyone is getting ready for the Wounded Warrior Foundation fundraiser

was raised to go to the Wounded War-rior Program, not bad for such a small house that has only 34 lanes. Scores were fair in this no tap tournament and spirits were high. The winner was Jeanie Chapman with a Handicap score of 1129, congrats to Jeanie, way to bowl. We have learned a great deal about

our heroes and all the people around our great country that have come to-gether to support those that take care and fight for our freedom. BUT, did you know that it is not supported by our President? In the infinite wisdom of our government, they have decided that because someone is a volunteer that the government hold no responsi-bility for taking care of them when they come back wounded. It’s basically up to the family and the generosity of those of us who care enough to take care of them. This is Not to take away from Bowling or the Wounded Warrior Foundation, but please write to your states Senators, Governors, who ever and lets get something going. We would like to see more tourna-ments like this one that will help our soldiers that fight for our freedom! Ask your local bowling center about host-ing and event like this one, or ask your local bar to have a dart tournament, what ever it takes. Bowling can do great things but it takes somewhere to start.

As a tribute to fallen friend and fel-low competitor Tony Reyes, PBA Tour players will wear a special black-and-silver “TR” emblem during competition in the months ahead. The special TR logo reflects the colors of Reyes’ fa-vorite sports team, the Oakland Raid-ers. While supplies last, the “TR” patch-es will be available through the PBA office (and on-site at all PBA tourna-ments) for $5 each, with all proceeds benefitting Reyes’ family. To order, send a check or money order (sorry, no credit cards accepted) to: PBA, c/o TR emblem, 719 Second Ave., Suite 701, Seattle, WA 98104. Please allow 3-4 weeks for delivery (emblems have just been ordered). The tribute emblem is just one in a growing number of memorials and benefits to the 38-year-old, one-time PBA Tour champion from San Bruno, Calif., who died as a result of injuries sustained in a traffic accident on Sept. 28 in northern California. To keep track of the memorials honoring Reyes, visit pba.com on a regular basis for the latest informa-tion.

Yes! There is (was) gold being sought in London but the 22nd senior Fun-Time no-tap doubles tournament had its share of gold. The Las Vegas’ Orleans Hotel & Casino 70 lane bowl-ing center July 22-25 provided not only gold for the top “golden years” bowl-ers but some golden moments as well. The tournament was honored to have quadriplegic Jeff Lewis sing a mov-ing rendition of our National Anthem to open the festivities. Jeff has fought back from a debilitating disease fabri-cating his arms & legs to be able not only to walk again but bowl as well. Those familiar to the “Joe the Bowl-er” honor, at some large tournaments, were not disappointed by the second tourney honoree Tom Rubio, a long time participant. He followed the first selection, Ruth Ramsey, who was hon-ored at the January 2012 event as our first “Joe” or is that “Jane”. Plenty of gold was available for a re-cord July crowd. 386 bowlers took their skills to the lanes on Monday followed by Tuesday’s 376 and Wednesday’s 370 for a grand total of 1032. A Sunday evening blind draw drew 138 hardy souls with 56 taking part in a Tuesday singles event. A new all events catego-ry was setup to entice the bowlers to see how well they stood up to others using their handicap totals for the three standard daily tournaments. 163 took that challenge. Each day was a separate tourna-ment combining two squads splitting them into two (2) divisions based on team average. A pot of gold awaited the top 25 teams in each division each day. Let’s see who took home the gold. Reminder: it would be nice to have everyone’s name listed but that is not possible. You can find complete results online at our website listed at end of this article. Unless otherwise noted scratch scores listed only. Top five finishers in Sunday’s blind draw: Dan Miller (288)/Bonnie Toms (273), Connie Blumenthal (287)/ Joyce Dakin (296), Russ Valentine (280)/Con-nie Byrne (240), Charlee Kist (300)/Betty Dennis (258) and Dick Hounsley (255)/David Woodle (255). Some no-table scores: Gene McDonald & Doug White (300), Jerry Wood (298), Roger Sears (296), Peter Cracchiolo & Gene Autry (287). Monday Div 1: Ten pins separated number 1 team JoAnn Scoville (278)/Charlotte Ontiveros from second place finishers Petra/ Ray Rosales with Jeff/ Carol Lewis (he can bowl), An-nette Gudson (256)/Linda Mitchell (247) and Claude (264)/Betty Dennis (233) rounding out the top five. Div 2: Regina Edge-Pugh (298-847) carried hubby Willie (265) to victory by only 8 pins over the McNeely’s, Roy (298)/Ruby (261). Third place went to Char-ity (267)/Tim (290) Musial with Sandra McGee (264)/Essie Jackson (264) and Jim Ziebarth (263)/Russ Valentine (300) following. Tuesday Div 1: Shirley (254)/Bill Mc Donald (268) took top honors over 2nd place Montry/Jim Mc Nally with teams Ted/Maria (253) Cozby, Mary Cran-ston/Shirley Ryckmen (258), Virginia Schuetzle/Connie Byrne (248) chas-ing. Div 2: Tim Teller’s 300 helped pro-pel him and partner Julie Rhoads (260) to victory over Art (297)/John (268) Palmer whose margin was only 4 pins

ahead of Tom (300)/Amelia Kutz with Bridgette (270)/Bob (300) Greb bare-ly 2 pins over fifth place Paul/Sherrie (275) Leonard. Singles: Stanley DeWaal matched 300 games with Gary Anderson & Doug White to win the singles tournament Tuesday evening. Jack Grace finished second with Connie Blumenthal and Anderson tied for third. White was next with Bridgette Greb close behind. Wednesday Div 1: Sandy & Al Par-doe took advantage of their low av-erages and set the tournament high handicap series of 1803. As it turns out the next four teams had all finished in the top five either on Monday or Tues-day. C (276)/J Lewis, Schuetzle/Byrne, Claude (300)/Betty (300) Dennis (may have been the first husband & wife to each bowl a 300 in the same series), Cranston/Ryckmen. Talk about taking home the gold. Div 2: One repeating team McGee/Jackson came in third behind leaders Kat Van Der Vegt/Os-car Favela (288) & 2nd place Candy/Terry (298) Mar. 4th & 5th went to George Morrison/Bruce Hilton (290) & Willie Moon/Artie Jones respectfully. Gold seekers: Distaff side: 300’s other than listed above: Linda Mitchell, Javon Larreta & Pam Foster. Jo Burke 287. Stephanie Daley, Linda Dennis, Joyce Dakin, Georgette Palmer & Shir-ley Giles in the 270’s. Shooters in the 260’s were: Bertie Ferrero, Linda Tay-lor, Lucy Domes, Essie Jackson, Glo-ria King, Rita Carlton, Bev Badarraco, B J Davalos, Cathy Recio, Josie Long-oria. Men: 300 group, led by Gene Autry’s 4, included Roger Sears, Jerry Wood, Bill Moore & Jim Le Doux with 2 each. Single 300 shooters: Rich Olpin, Ron Thorson, Gary Anderson, Brad Domes, Joe Hoss, Nick Camba, Doug White, Joe Greenfield, Chuck Garber, Peter Cracchiolo, John Fitzgerald, Gil-bert Shelton. Close but no cigar: Jack Grace, Art Palmer, Craig Squires, Tim Musial & Roy Mc Neely shooting in the 290’s. Ralph Morton’s staff is to be com-mended again for “getting the job done”. All the work that goes on be-fore the show goes on is without say-ing. Thanks to Nancy Morton, Jerry & Judee Wood, Tom & Valerie Muir, Bob & Karen Scales, Les & Fran Williams, Brad & Lucy Domes, Freida Pyles, Bill & Ruth Lang, John & Kathy McCabe, Donna & Dick Hounsley. All of the above could never get off the ground if not for the support of the Orleans staff led by Mike Kaufmann. Kudos to Bob McVey & Fawn Worth-en for their tireless effort. Thanks to the desk crew: Mark Watkins, Darren Stock, BreAnn Larkin, Joel Corral & Sonny Phui for keeping things hum-ming. Apologies to those I missed and lack of space to get everyone in. Thanks to all of you who have support-ed this tournament for so many years. Welcome to all you newbies and hope you will be back in January at the same great Orleans Hotel & Casino, Las Vegas. Bring your bowling buddies. That’s right January 14,15,16, 2013 is just around the corner. Expecting a big turnout with lots of prize fund to spread around. If you don’t believe how much is available please go to our website: http://funtimebowling.yolasite.com for July results and January’s entry form. The first tournament of 2012-2013 season of the Arizona Bowlerettes was held on Saturday September 8, 2012. It seemed a little odd not to have retired Arizona Bowlerette sec-retary Ruth Hood running the tourna-ment. New secretary Karen Butler did an excellent job putting on her first tournament. Brunswick Kyrene Lanes hosted the tournament. The top 2 Arizona Bowlerettes of the day were in Division I Sandee Deines with a 549 and in Division II Lisa Morales with a 607 series. Awesome job, way to start the season! One of the Arizona Bowlerettes’ newest board members is Mary Doyle. Both of Mary’s parents were bowlers so she started bowling in grade school. The small town in Michigan that Mary lived with her family had a local bowl-ing alley. The bowling alley opened its doors during the winter months so that the students could have gym class bowling. The only catch was back in those days there were no automatic pin setters. The bowler would bowl a game and then had to set pins for the next game. Setting pins was not an easy job; Mary really got a work out when it was her turn to set the pins. Mary has been with the Arizona Bowlerettes for 3 years, this is her first time sitting on the board. Mary has been a past President and sec-retary/treasurer of bowling leagues in the east valley. Mary was married to Vincent J. Doyle for 32 years before he passed away. Mary and Vincent owned a com-pany called V. J. Doyle Plumbing Co. Mary worked in the office and clerked in the retail store that was a part of the construction end of the business. It was a lot of fun for Mary to watch the disbelief on the faces of a lot of men as she told them how to repair their plumbing problems. Mary and Vincent had 2 sons and 2 daughters. Mary has 7 grandsons, 2 granddaughters, 1 great-granddaugh-ter and 1 great-grandson. Most of them enjoy bowling. Mary makes her home in the east valley in Tempe. She likes working on the yard and has her own small veg-etable garden. She also likes to read about history and to knit. Her real love is collecting antique and modern clothing buttons. She has gone through the chairs of the Nation-

al Button Society and has served as the National President for two years. Mary is the proud owner of a button that was worn at George Washing-ton’s first inauguration in 1789. Mary the Arizona Bowlerettes sa-lute you for your commitment to the Arizona Bowlerettes. Upcoming events: October 13th Gold Coast Casino, Las Vegas, Ne-vada: 9 Pin No Tap. The Arizona Bowlerettes will be joined by the Tucson Bowlerettes and the Nevada Bowlers. Everyone will bowl at 12 o’clock PM. After the tournament your Arizona Bowlerette Board is hosting this year. A reception room has been reserved from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM for the reception which will be held im-mediately following the tournament. Please make plans to attend. Loca-tion of the room will be announced at the tournament. Hope to see every-one there. November 10th Desert Sky Lanes, Phoenix: 3 Games Single November 11th Veteran’s Day-To all of the Arizona Bowlerettes that have served or is the spouse of someone that is serving or has served in the United States Armed Forces. The Arizona Bowlerettes thank you for your service and sac-rifices for our country. December 8th Glenfair Lanes, Glendale: Scrambler. If you have been thinking about joining the Arizona Bowlerettes it isn’t too late. The season has just started. The Arizona Bowlerettes bowl a tour-nament a month at a different bowling alley throughout the state of Arizona with the exception of the October tournament in Las Vegas. This is your chance to join other women from around the state that enjoy bowling, meeting new people and discovering different parts of Arizona. If you would like more information please contact the secretary Karen Butler at 623-435-9848. See you at the lanes!
