Drawing Near to God Call to Worship (Responsive)

Omnipotent Father, help us in this hour to be still and know that you are God. Christ, who delivers us from sin and death, clothe us in your righteousness. Holy Spirit, ever-present with us in the whirlwind of everyday life, breathe into us your strength and comfort, and enable us to grow in the image of our Creator. O still-small voice, speak to us, that we might become makers of your peace - in our homes, in our communities, in our world. Amen.

*Hymn #5 Come, Thou Almighty KingAllowing God to Shape Us

Morning Prayer (Unison) O merciful God and Father, we pray that you will be pleased in this worship to work in our hearts through your Holy Spirit, that we may daily give ourselves up to Christ, our Lord, with true confidence and peace. Grant that we may no longer live in our sins, but Christ live in us, and we in him. Grant that we may be partakers of the new and eternal covenant of grace and reconciliation. Strengthen us by your Holy Spirit that we may not doubt that you will forever be our gracious Father, never more counting our sins against us, and providing us, as your beloved children, with all things necessary both for body and soul. Grant us also your grace that we may daily take up our cross cheerfully, deny ourselves, confess our Savior, and witness to His life in us without fear. In all life and in eternal life we are yours, and You are our faithful Lord and Savior. This we pray through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

CONCERTS IN THE VILLAGE: THE POWERFUL REQUIEM OF BRAHMS3 P.M. NEXT SUNDAY, APRIL 14, KINDERHOOK REFORMED CHURCH

THE BROAD STREET CHORALE AND ORCHESTRA JOIN FORCES ONCE AGAIN,INCLUDING REGIONAL DEBUTS FOR HEATHER GREEN AND RICHARD BYRNE

The orchestral and choral forces of Concerts in the Village (CITV) perform together once again in one of the most moving works in all of music literature, the great Requiem (Ein deutsches Requiem) of Johannes Brahms. Unlike nearly every other requiem, this well-known masterpiece is very much a celebration of life rather than a liturgically-based memorial to the dead. Once heard, the beauty of Brahms’ writing cannot easily be forgot-ten. With this performance CITV welcomes soprano Heather Green and baritone Richard Byrne in their regional concert debuts. Over 80 singers and instrumentalists will be per-forming. CITV Artistic Director David Smith conducts. Internationally acclaimed soprano Heather Green has been heralded for her recent por-trayals of Richard Strauss’s Salome in California and New York City. Other well-received op-eratic roles include Senta in Der fliegende Holländer and Sieglinde in Die Walküre. She has also performed in Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West, and as Lady MacBeth in Verdi’s MacBeth. Ms. Green has been a selected emerging artist with Saint Petersburg Opera, FL and is a two-time recipient of the Mellon Grant for Creative Research. Baritone Richard Byrne has performed with many of the world’s most prestigious opera companies and orchestras. As an apprentice at Wolf Trap Opera, he captured the ear of Beverly Sills and was invited by her to perform at New York City Opera in 1988. Over the course of seventeen subsequent seasons there, he sang 423 performances of 27 different roles. Mr. Byrne was also privi-leged to sing for seven seasons at the Metropolitan Opera, as well as with the opera com-panies of Washington, Houston, Dallas, Minneapolis, New Orleans, and other major cities. He moved to the village of Kinderhook three years ago. Says CITV Artistic Director David Smith, “How fortunate we are to have such a commit -ted chorus, orchestra and soloists for the Requiem of Brahms. I know few works which combine warmth and drama in such a perfectly balanced way. This will be an experience equally special for all who will be performing and all who will be listening.” Reception follows. Contribution $20. Students and children free.

Maundy Thursday Communion Worship Service 7 pm Thursday, April 18, Kinderhook Reformed Church Sanctuary

WHAT IS MAUNDY THURSDAY?Good Friday, we know, and Easter most certainly. But what is Maundy Thursday? Maundy Thursday is the Thursday before Easter, believed to be the day when Jesus cel -ebrated his final Passover with His disciples. Most notably, that Passover meal was when Jesus washed the feet of His disciples in an extraordinary display of humility. He then commanded them to do the same for each other. Christ's "mandate" is commemo-rated on Maundy Thursday - "maundy" being a shortened form of mandatum (Latin), which means "command." It was on the Thursday of Christ's final week before being crucified and resurrected that He said these words to his disciples: "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another" (John 13:34).What was so "new" about this command? Well, for one thing, it raised the definition of love to a new and higher standard. Jesus sacrificially met His followers' deepest need - that of new spiritual life and the forgiveness of sins. He even loved His enemies, and He calls us to show love to those who don't appear to deserve it. Just as Jesus loved sinners "to the end" (or "to the max," John 13:1) when He had nothing to gain from them, so must we. The Bible says that there was nothing attractive about sinful mankind that drew Him to love us. God loved us while we were yet sinners (Romans 5:8). Salvation is not only a wonderful gift that protects us from the penalty that we deserve (Romans 6:23), the work of Christ also imbues new life, grants spiritual strength, and motivates Godly action in those who believe: "For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works." (Titus 2:11-14)While Scripture doesn't require us to commemorate days like Maundy Thursday, the main question is, “Are we observing Christ's new command to love - especially those who deserve it least?” "Beloved, let us love one another. For love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love." (1 John 4:7-8) Alex Crain, Christianity.com

THIS YEAR’S NORTHERN COLUMBIA COUNTY “CROP WALK” SUNDAY, MAY 5Tens of thousands of CROP Hunger Walkers are committed each year to building a hunger-free world. For nearly half a century, CROP Hunger Walks have ensured that more people worldwide have access to nutritious, sustainable food sources. From combatting droughts in Nicaragua to providing agricultural training in Indonesia to stocking shelves in hundreds of food pantries across the US, CROP Hunger Walks help end hunger by raising funds to support the international anti-hunger work of Church World Service as well as local food programs. 25% of the funds donated go to benefit local food pantries. This year's walk is on Sunday, May 5, and will step off at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Kinderhook. The walk will still wind around the village of Kinder-hook, with a short one-mile loop for our Golden Strollers, and the regular, longer route of 3 and ¾ miles. Registration is at 1:30 p.m., and the walk begins at 2 p.m. Kinderhook Reformed Church is once again invited to stand with its neighbors in our community, who rely on food-assistance programs, and to partner with and support families worldwide struggling in the face of grinding poverty. KRC's contact person for this ministry, Patrice Lyons, is prepared to pass along all necessary CROP WALK 2019 information to the KRC family and friends, and encourages our participation in this year's effort. Last year, KRC had 2 walkers and donated $385. Please consider joining the walk to fight hunger here and throughout the world.
