The Downtown Neighbourhood Alliance of Neighbourhood Associations (DNA) is a volunteer organization that coordinates community programs at the Downtown Community Centre (DCC) and collaborates with neighbourhoods near Downtown Kitchener including Central Frederick, Olde Berlin Town, Victoria Park, Auditorium, King East, Mount Hope and Cedar Hill. DNA also acts as a forum for common issues for these neighbourhoods and is committed to quality service that is accessible to all.
Winter registration begins November 21, 2017. Sign up in person at the Downtown Community Centre (DCC), 35B We-ber St. W., Kitchener. Or, go on-line; www.kitchener.ca/activenet
The Downtown Community Centre has 2 Family Outreach Workers. If you require fee assistance to participate in a program offered at the Downtown Community Centre, please contact Samantha 519-498-7560 or Marjorie 519-498-7633 to see if you are eligible (see page 33).
Tickets for Drop-In programs are purchased at the DCC office. All programs are held at the DCC unless otherwise stated. Please call 519-741-2501 for further information or see www.kitchenerdna.com.
The Central Frederick Neighbourhood Association (CFNA) represents approximately 1,700 households in one of Kitchener’s oldest neighbourhoods. Along with diverse housing including several significant heritage properties, this vibrant downtown area has a range of commercial, professional and public areas as well, including Weber Park and the Frederick Mall - the first plaza in Kitchener. The CFNA is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for the residents of the Central Frederick Neighbourhood. It is supported by dedicated volunteers who work on many interests important to the neighbourhood including event and activity planning, neighbourhood improvements and communications. As a member of the DNA, the CFNA helps facilitate recreational, educational and social programs at the Downtown Community Centre. It also supports dialogue and links between neighbourhoods in the downtown and beyond. See website: www.centralfrederick.org, or join the e-newsletter mailing list on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/CentralFrederick
The Olde Berlin Town Neighbourhood Association (OBTNA) is located in one of the oldest parts of Kitchener. It is bounded by Weber, Victoria, Lancaster and Frederick Streets and is rich with cultural and historical significance. They aim to foster pride in their neighbourhood, maintain a safe community and promote community awareness and work with the DNA. Arts, culture and entertainment abound with The Centre in the Square, Art Gallery, Library and historical gaol [aka jail] nearby on Queen Street - the birthplace of Waterloo Region. Many beautiful homes owned by industrialists from the ‘Busy Berlin’ era are still maintained as family residences in this community-minded neighbourhood. Most of the area is designated as the Civic Centre Heritage Conservation District under the Ontario Heritage Act. See: https://www.facebook.com/OldeBerlinTown
The Victoria Park Neighbourhood Association (VPNA) centres around Victoria Park, so-named for Queen Victoria and is the first park in Kitchener. They are the first Heritage Conservation District designated by the city. It is a popular residential area with large, beautiful, single-family detached homes, more modest homes, multiple-unit homes, condominiums and rental units. There are also businesses, shops, bakeries, social support organizations, a health clinic, a senior citizens home, churches, and Joseph Schneider House Museum and Gallery and National Historic Site (built in 1816 – Kitchener’s oldest building). Boundaries are Queen Street South, Joseph, Victoria, Highland and West. As well as partnering with DNA, they sponsor a few independent programs at DCC and are committed to making their neighbourhood a better place to live. Mount Hope Neighbourhood located on the West side of downtown Kitchener is part of the Mount Hope-Breithaupt Park Neighbourhood Association. The train station is nearby and the Light Rail Transit seems to be spurring growth as many structural changes are occurring, such as a huge condo development, in this long-established residential downtown community. They are a pro-active group that organizes events, advocates for the Waterloo Spur Line Trail, holds an annual Bike Tour and a Jane’s Walk tour highlighting the old Fire Hall #2, Little City Farm, and Mt. Hope cemetery that holds the key to many great stories of early settlers, businessmen and former slaves who are all buried there - a great way to learn the history of Kitchener.
See: http://www.mhbpna.org/
The boundaries for the Cedar Hill Community Group are Benton, St. George, Queen, Courtland, Madison, and King Streets. This grass roots community was originally called Sand Hills and it overlooks main street Kitchener. They promote a safe and healthy community through regular inclusive interaction. A number of locations have historical significance in this long-established neighbourhood. In addition to supporting the principles of DNA, this community sponsors programs at the Mill Courland Community Centre.
The Auditorium Neighbourhood Association is ringed on one side by the Conestoga Parkway and by Weber Street East, Krug and Ottawa Streets. Near the hub of this grand residential community is “The Aud”. With a Festival of Neighbourhood grant, other donations and the involvement of the City of Kitchener, this community continues with the rejuvenation of Knollwood Park; a local architect designed a pavilion. The association hosts several events such as kids soccer and Waddlefest (Sept), promotes community pride and social activities, and encourages vigorous citizen participation in all issues affecting the neighbourhood. See: www.auditoriumna.org
King East Neighbourhood is located on the edge of downtown Kitchener, beginning at the Kitchener Market and ending at Eastwood Square. It has easy access to shopping, services, cultural centres and transportation. This neighbourhood is one of the oldest in the city, and is home to a vibrant and diverse community. The King East Neighbourhood Association’s goal is to maximize pride, safety, and quality of living in our community by encouraging interaction between neighbours, visitors, and businesses alike. We work to foster a connected, informed, and welcoming community that takes an active role in determining our place in the city.

Greetings Downtown Neighbours!
As we kick off the winter season in Kitchener, community outreach programs are hosting their sock and pajama
drive for families. Drop offs are welcome at all community centres.
Come join us at City Hall for the Festival of Neighbourhoods Finale on November 19 from 1-3 pm. Last year the Hohner Avenue Porch Party was the grand prize winner of the capital grant. It will be exciting to see which
neighbourhood gets picked through the random draw for the $21,000 prize this year.
Did you know that the Downtown Community Centre relies on local instructors for all of their programming? We are always looking for new ideas and instructors. Perhaps you might be interested in sharing your skills with others in the community. The Downtown Neighbourhood Alliance (DNA) can help with that! Contact them through the
Downtown Community Centre.
I look forward to hearing from you with any city-related questions or ideas you may have. As always, you can
reach me at [email protected], my office 519-741-2786, or cell 519-807-8006.

What Is Pickleball?
A lively racket game for all ages and abilities Pickleball® was created with one thing in mind: fun. It was designed to be easy to learn and play whether you’re five, eighty-five or somewhere in between.
Court and Gear
Pickleball® is traditionally played on a badminton-sized court with special Pickleball® paddles, made of wood or high-tech aerospace materials. The ball used is similar to a wiffle ball, but slightly smaller. The lower net and wiffle ball allow the game to be accessible to people of all ages and abilities, while still allowing more competitive players to test their mettle.
Pay-As-You-Play Programs
Pay-As-You-Play programs are organized by the City of Kitchener staff in the Adults 55+ division with the daily play of these activities looked after by direct City volun-teers. Pay-As-You-Play programs include Adult Badminton, Adult Basketball and All Ages Pickleball at Breithaupt Centre as well as Pickleball at Downtown Community Centre. No registration is required for these programs but individuals must purchase and hand in tickets for each time they participate.
Cost of tickets: Adults 55+ $3.62/pass
