Again this year we will buy our Christmas flowers locally, which were also locally grown at Anderson’s Greenhouse in Two Harbors. You can purchase a poinsettia for St. Mary’s Church in memory of a loved one. The cost is $13. Please use a “flower envelope” so we have all the correct information for the Christmas Bulletin. If you have any questions, please call the Parish Office for more details.
Snow Removal Volunteers Needed
We need “snow angels” who are willing and able to Adopt a Weekend this winter to watch the weather and, if needed, to clear snow and ice from the sidewalks before each of the Masses. The church has a snow blower, shovels, and ice melt – we need people who can do the work. Please sign up in the back of the church if you’re able to commit to a weekend or, if it’s better for your schedule, to be an alternate. If you have any questions, please contact Cindy in the parish office.

Fr. Steve’s Quotes for Consideration:
“Love Our Lady. And She Will Obtain Abundant Grace To Help You Conquer In Your Daily Struggle.” -St. Josemaria Escriva (1902-1975)
On Thursday, December 8th, we celebrate a major, major feast day in the life of the Church: The Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This feast day is a holy day of obligation, so please
remember, we are required by our Lord through His Church to attend Mass to honor His mother, Mary. I have tried to make the holy day Masses as convenient as possible so that we can find at least one Mass between Two Harbors or Silver Bay that we can attend. You can check the bulletin for holy day Mass times. This feast day of the Immaculate Conception is perhaps one of the most confused and poorly understood holy days in the Church calendar. Many people incorrectly believe that on this feast day, we remember and celebrate Jesus’ miraculous conception in the Virgin Mary’s womb. That, however, is incorrect- we celebrate that event on March 25, which is exactly nine months before Christmas day, Jesus’ birthday, for obvious reasons. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrates the fact that Mary was preserved from the stain of original sin, which we all otherwise inherit at the moment of conception and which can only be washed away through the waters of holy baptism, from the moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, St. Anne. God did this by applying to Mary, at the moment of her conception, the grace that He would win for us by His own death on the cross. In other words, God took the grace and forgiveness of sins that He accomplished by dying on the cross, and applied it backwards in time to Mary at the moment of her conception, so that she would be free of original sin. While this may seem odd or even incomprehensible to us, we should remember that since God is infinite, time is not a problem for Him. For God, there really is no such thing as past, present, and future: everything is one eternal present for Him. The point of all of this, and the reason for this feast day, is not just to honor Mary, it is also to remember the utter holiness and purity of God. God is so holy, so pure, so almighty, so perfect, that sin cannot exist in his presence. Therefore, the mother of Jesus Christ would have to be preserved from all stain of original sin in order that she could be a worthy vessel to carry God in her womb. So, on the Immaculate Conception, we celebrate God’s special plan for Mary to be His mother from the moment of her conception, and we also celebrate indirectly the fact that God similarly has a reason and purpose for bringing each of us into existence, and has a special call for our lives as well. In addition, the feast of the Immaculate Conception is particularly special for us as Americans since Mary, under the title of The Immaculate Conception, is the patroness of the United States of America. Blessed Mary, ever Virgin, conceived immaculately in the womb of your mother, St. Anne, Pray for us! God bless you! ~ Fr. Steve
Note From Fr. Steve: Please be aware that due to privacy laws, if you or a loved one are in the hospital, the hospital will not contact me to inform me that you are there, unless you ask them to contact the Church. So, if you or a loved one are hospitalized for any reason, please let us know by either calling the parish office or calling me at the rectory 834-4313 so that I can arrange a visit.
