Dear Parents and Students,
When I arrived last July, I had no idea how quickly I would fall in love with all things AHA. Now the time has come for me to say goodbye to the Angels who have graced my life this year. In this last letter, I would like to reflect with you on some of the goodness I experienced at Holy Angels.
I am in Awe at how the charism of the School Sisters of Notre Dame is embraced here. This year’s theme, LOVE Cannot Wait, has been integrated into every facet of school life.
I am Nourished by the generosity of our students who constantly reach out to help those who are less fortunate than they. I have stated with pride that our girls never raise money for themselves but respond so generously to needs of others near and far.
I am Grateful for the generosity of our parents who give tirelessly of their time, talent and treasure. The three parent organizations, Parents’ Guild, Angels in the Arts and Parents’ Athletic Association, are the backbone of every major event that occurs at Holy Angels.
I am Enlightened by the wisdom of the faculty, staff and coaches who draw out of our very talented and astute students the very best of their gifts.
I am Lucky, you might even say blessed, that the Spirit led me to this sacred place for this year. Finally, I turn to my Irish roots to leave you with a blessing. Know that you will forever be in my thoughts & prayers.
May the road rise to meet you.May the wind be ever at your back.May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again,May you be held in the hollow of God’s hand.
Gratefully,
Sister PatriciaPresident
News and Events for June 2014
Dear Parents and Students,
Many images, stories and memories come to mind as I think about the graduating class of 2014. They have become the most successful class in school history, judging by traditional metrics of grades, awards, scholarships and achievements. They attained this success the old fashioned way; they earned it. Hard work and never quitting were part of their DNA. They were especially good when facing challenges in course work, time management or competitions.
Talent and creativity was theirs in abundance. They led the Dance Team to a third place finish in Hip Hop Nationals. National awards poured in for poetry, photography and overall art portfolio. The senior number at the talent show “Prom through the Decades” was choreographed and costumed to delight the audience while making a point about the growing independence and equality of women. On International Night they created a fusion of cultures and celebrated them with joy. The 2014 edition of Blueprint, our literary Art magazine, is replete with examples of their art and writing.
It was easy to be “for fourteen” when they themselves were for so many good causes. Hurricane Sandy relief took them to Moonachie to rehab houses without air conditioning in the 95o heat of July. How to work with paint rollers on poles is a skill they will not forget. They impressed everyone by singing their way through the day, like they were at a picnic. Whether in Congo on an Operation Smile mission or at St. Peter the Apostle School in Philadelphia, they gave from the heart. There was no doubt that the Spirits Point Contest would be decided in their favor.
Spiritually, they deepened their relationship with God through not one but two weekend Kairos retreats, in addition to their senior class retreat. Together as a class, they have given over 20,000 hours of service in the last four years.
Academically, 70% of the class has taken an AP exam; a staggering 50% alone were enrolled in AP English. They are a testament to the belief that one can grow

one’s intelligence by engaging with difficult material, and staying the course, encouraged by dedicated faculty who will bring out their best. Their college acceptances were epic; the first time a class attained admission to all eight Ivy League schools. Georgetown, Scranton, Lehigh, Villanova, Fordham, Bucknell, and Colgate will have Angels on campus next year. The class of 2014 was an aca-demic tsunami. It is any wonder that the Studio Art class has chosen The Wave by Todd Strasser as the senior mural.
They may not be worth their weight in gold, but they came pretty close, having garnered more than $22,394,500 in scholarships and grants for college.
We wish them well as they leave us. They will be missed!
Sincerely,
Miss Jennifer MoranPrincipal
The Office of Development would like to thank the following Angel Ambassadors for work done above and beyond the call of duty. This group of juniors volunteered their time to make calls during our Reunion Giving phonathon nights.

Senior Lydon Kersting addressed the AHA community for the last time in her role as NHS President at an assembly held on May 2nd. Her poignant reflection upon her years at AHA included advice to her fellow students not to view their years at AHA solely as a stepping stone to college and to go beyond “resume building” and engage in activities they truly enjoy. According to Lydon, the biggest challenge facing students is “not losing sight of yourself, your kid self, along the way.” Lydon has been selected to offer the commencement address at this year’s graduation exercises.
Congratulations to Senior Alana Spendley who received a New Jersey Governor’s Award in Arts Education for her poetry at a ceremony held on May 1st at Patriots Theatre at the War Memorial in Trenton, NJ. Established in 1980 to promote awareness and appreciation of the arts, the Governor’s Awards in Arts Education honor New Jersey students and teachers for outstanding achievement in a variety of artistic endeavors. In total 85 students from all over the state of
New Jersey were recognized in such fields as dance, theatre, orchestra and band, photography, painting and writing. The selection process was a highly competitive one and the winners were chosen by members of the sponsoring organizations from all over the state. Alana, one of only six student presenters at the ceremony, recited her poem, “Cartography” for which she was awarded the High School Writing Contest Poetry Genre Gold Medal.
AHA recently learned that we received eight nominations for our production of Seussical The Musical. Established in 1998, the High School Theater Awards
recognize talented actors, musicians, designers and directors of high school musical productions. Judges evaluate entrants from high schools in Bergen County New Jersey and Rockland and Westchester Counties in New York during the Spring musical season. Holy Angels received nominations in the following categories: Actress in a Supporting Role (Sheena Santos as Jo Jo); Featured Ensemble Group (Sofia Carvajal, Heather Mueger, Louis Napolitano Sydney Peterson-Quinn and Ariela Pizza as The Wickersham Brothers); Outstanding Duet (Alone in the Universe - Allen Marchioni as Horton and Sheena Santos as Jo Jo); Outstanding Lobby Display (Risako Arcari, Elizabeth Bilka, Natalie Freay, Jackie Fusco, Grace Fuselier, Alyssa Gentile, Emily Loftus, Michaela Mudrick and Christina Sirico): Outstanding Graphic Design (Meghan Valentine); Outstanding Costume Design (Ruth Morely); Outstanding Lighting Design (Jim Bonkosky) and Outstanding Scenic Design (Gregory Cilmi). The awards ceremony will take place on June 2nd at Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains NY.

Congratulations to Brigid Hayes ’14 and Caroline McLaughlin ’15 who were recently awarded the 2014 Creative Writing Award by La Societe Honorarie de Francais. This year’s topic was how modern technology affects our lives today.
During the fourth quarter Sister Carole’s Spanish IV students worked on a very challenging project where they worked in small groups to produce a themed game. The assignment had many required components drawn from the lesson plans from over the entire school year. The girls had to incorporate at least 200 verbs, vocabulary words, culture and author questions and the game had to conform to specific design specifications as well. Students were given class time to work on their games and enjoyed playing them upon their completion. Sister Carole was delighted with the
magnificent work of her students. “The classes consist of mostly seniors and it was a wonderful way for them to be challenged, work hard, enjoy each other and bond as they created the final project. When the project was completed, the students actually played their games and AGAIN reviewed all of their skills as they answered each other’s questions. Sister Carole writes, “I am thrilled with their consistent work and sense of joy. As I watched them play their games, I realized how much they REALLY did learn individually and as a bonded group. As a teacher, I could not ask for more and remain so proud of them as young ladies and wonderful students!” The assignment also received raves from the class members with one student writing, “As we worked, we bonded and felt such a sense of accomplishment with this project. Thank you S. Carole for assigning this as a challenge to represent all that we learned this year.”
Congratulations to the following recipients of the Coccia Award for 2014: Sara Ayoub ‘16, Graciela Paredes ‘16, Camila Nicasio ‘15, Kiara Quinones ’14 and Amanda Kelly ’14. The Coccia Award recognizes students who demonstrate a passion for the study of the Italian language.
Congratulations to Senior Lydon Kersting who was awarded a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship. The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from more than 15,000 outstanding Finalists in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. According to NMSC, “These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors, who appraised a
substantial amount of information submitted by both the Finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the Finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.”
Freshman Bridget O’Donnell won 1st Place in the Under-15 Solo Irish-Fiddle Competition at the Mid-Atlantic States Fleadh Cheoil held in Parsipanny, NJ on April 26, 2014. Bridget will go to Sligo, Ireland in August to compete for the All Ireland title.
Congratulations to the winners of the Kindness Award for the fourth quarter: Annie Loftus ’14, A’Adil Ali-Jenkins ’15, Genesis Morales-Rodriguez ’16 and Alexandra McCartha ’17.
Congratulations to Senior Kayla Quigley on being selected to receive the 2014 Brian Piccolo Award. This honor is presented annually to a male and female
high school scholar-athlete of Italian ancestry who models the ideals of Brian Piccolo. The Brian Piccolo Award is sponsored by The St. Joseph Regional High School Chapter of UNICO National, a nationwide service organization which promotes Italian-American heritage and supports cultural, educational and community causes. AHA Athletic Director Mrs. Patti Gorsuch wrote about Kayla, “She is an outstanding student; I believe that she demonstrates all of the qualities of a hard-working and devoted athlete. Her work ethic and determination to be the very best at what she does has proven to be an inspiration to her teammates and classmates.”
Seniors Emma DiBernardo, Elle Infante, Jackie Fusco and Jessica McCann addressed several AP science classes on May 20th about their participation in “An Introduction to Surgical Research Methodologies, a program at Englewood Hospital. Open to seniors only and funded entirely by Holy Angels, this program allows students hands on experience in a laboratory research environment. They met after school once a week typically for four hour sessions beginning in February. Mrs. Brizzolara thanked them for being pioneers in this program and for taking on the challenges and commitment it entailed. She
encouraged the juniors to consider applying for it next year. “With this partnership, Holy Angels is offering you the opportunity to enrich your futures through experiences beyond our classrooms.”
CLASS VISITS Mrs. Cucchisi’s International Studies welcomed Mr. Kevin Marinacci on April 29th. Mr. Marinacci is President of Fabretto, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing education to Nicaraguan children. Mr. Marinacci shared with the class how he became involved with Fabretto explained their mission in fighting poverty in Nicaragua. He was referred to AHA by Mr. and Mrs. Williams, parents of Fiona Williams ‘15. He is pictured with Mrs Williams and Carolina Zuluaga ’15, one of the students in Ms. Cucchisi’s class.
