    PASTOR´S MESSAGE

For many of us, a model of a good or great father comes easily to mind. We see the

face, remember the touch and hear the voice of our own father. It is true that we

learn the meaning of “fatherly strength, fatherly virtue, fatherly love” from

experience and our own reflection upon it. Whatever size, shape, color or heritage our father’s

had, they modeled certain characteristics that have a universal relevance and wisdom. Among

the virtues that come to mind for me are dependability and duty, patience and availability, life

experience and optimism, truthfulness and simplicity. In the case of my own father, these all

were expressed with a love that was strong but not stifling or overpowering. I was given the

chance to experiment, fail, risk and succeed. I was required to stay close to family and home

but allowed to roam with a freedom that respected my individuality and gifts. This form

of “fatherly protection” has served as an example to me as I have tried to be a “spiritual

father” to many during my thirty-five years of priestly ministry.

In the spirituality of our church, there are not many men, with the exception of Saint Joseph, who have been reverenced

specifically because they were good fathers. For them, the way of holiness was the way of fatherhood. To put it another

way, they fathered their way into heaven. One of these fathers who has always meant a lot to me was Louis Martin, the

father of Saint Therese of Lisieux. He was a watchmaker, father of a large family and a loving husband to his wife Zelie.

Biographers describe him as patient, hardworking and devout. It is not; however, these virtues that mean so much to me as the

trust that he had in God’s providence and the freedom that he gave his children to follow their dreams. In the case of Therese,

it was freedom to follow her visions.

Louis listened to his youngest daughter when at fourteen she felt called to live a cloistered life as a Carmelite nun. He was

not crazy about the idea but realized that there was something going on that was special and unique in Therese’s passion and

zeal for the conversion of sinners and for the missions. He took her to see Pope Leo XIII who told them “If it is God’s will,

you will enter”. She entered the next year at age fifteen. Her “Little Way” of holiness, of doing even the most humble things

with extraordinary love and attentiveness to God’s will became a spiritual way for millions. Her favorite quote from Saint

John of the Cross, “Love is repaid by love alone”, is the perfect summary of her life and teaching. It was undoubtedly her

father’s love but also his trust in God and his respect for freedom that set Therese free and allowed the “Little Flower” to

flourish. Louis’s virtue and that of his wife Zelie were recognized when they were both canonized as saints. They are both

extraordinary models of nurturing parents and are an inspiration for us during this time of Mothers and Fathers Days.

    FORTNIGHT

    FOR FREEDOM

The Second Annual Fortnight of Freedom is scheduled this coming June 21 to July 4 by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Bishop Gerald M. Barbarito will celebrate the Holy Eucharist on June 21, at 12:00 Noon at St. Ignatius of Loyola Cathedral.

The First fortnight took place during the same dates last year. We started it in our Parish with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, with singing

and praising the Lord, with the recitation of the Patriotic Rosary, with readings and reflection from the Holy Scriptures for more than an Hour.

This year we will start with a Holy Mass on June 21 at 8:15 A.M. and pray the Patriotic Rosary each night starting June 21 to July 3 at 8:00 P.M.

in our Chapel. We will conclude with a Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on July 4 (Independence Day) at 9:00 A.M. in the Church.

We encourage you then to join us as we pray for our precious religious freedom and for the continued respect for human life.

    God bless you!

Thanks to the Knights and Columbiettes that attended the Serenade last Saturday night. Our Handicapped Brothers and Sisters really look

at you as the AIM Angles. Thank You for caring and participating.

THE AIM RETREAT #61 WAS A GREAT SUCCESS

If you would like to contribute funds to offset the cost of this event, please call Wendy Horton at 561-952-2838. Another AIM Retreat is scheduled for November.

We, the Catholic Bishops of Florida, are deeply

concerned about our nation’s immigration system.

We lament the loss of the many years our migrant

brothers and sisters have waited for changes that

would enable them to seek legal protection and

    support their families.

While the Catholic Church acknowledges the right

of countries to control their borders and enforce

immigration laws, the common good is not served

when the human dignity and rights of individuals are

violated. The Church teaches, the more prosperous

nations are obliged, to the extent they are able, to

welcome the foreigner in search of the security and

the means of livelihood which he cannot find in his

country of origin. Public authorities should see to it

that the natural right is respected that places a guest

under the protection of those who receive him

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2241).

The Florida economy is dependent upon manual

labor for agriculture, construction and the service

industry. People who seek to escape persecution and

economic disparity in their country of origin have

come to America for this employment. While the

need for labor exists, the limited numbers of worker

visas to bring labor into America are insufficient and

have created a market for undocumented workers

who may face abuses by unscrupulous employers,

    human smugglers and human traffickers.

Congress has the best opportunity in almost 30

years to pass immigration reform. This is a historic

moment in our country. As Americans, we cannot let

this moment pass. As a moral matter, our country

must not accept the toil and taxes of these children

of God without offering them the protections of our

laws, which they so willingly seek.

We urge you to join with us in asking the 113th

Congress to support immigration reform that:

lProvides a path to citizenship for undocumented

    persons in the country;

lPreserves family unity by reducing backlogs and

    waiting times for family reunification;

    lProtects vulnerable populations including refugees,

    asylum seekers and unaccompanied children;

lAddresses the root causes of migration, such as

    persecution and economic disparity.

Now is the time to act. We, the Catholic Bishops of

Florida, ask our parishioners to contact their member

of Congress and two United States Senators to ask

them to support immigration reform. Messages may

    be sent electronically by visiting

    www.flaccb.org/lawmakers.php.

A STATEMENT BY THE BISHOPS OF FLORIDA IN SUPPORT OF IMMIGRATION REFORM

“When an alien resides with you in your land, do not molest him. You shall treat the alien who resides with you no differently than the natives born among

you; have the same love for him as for yourself; for you too were once aliens in the land of Egypt. I, the Lord am your God.” LEVITICUS 19: 33 – 34

nuestros pecados. La fe y la humildad

salvaron a esta mujer de su hundimiento

    definitivo, con la contrición comenzó

una vida nueva. La contrición hace que

nos olvidemos de nosotros mismos y

nos acerquemos de nuevo a Dios es

también muestra de la hondura de

nuestro amor y atrae la misericordia

    divina sobre nuestras almas. Nuestros

peores defectos y faltas no deben

    desalentarnos aunque sean muchos y

    frecuentes mientras seamos humildes y

    volvamos arrepentidos.

    personas indocumentadas en el país;

    y el tiempo de espera para la reunión de la familia;

    que están solos;

LEVITICUS 19: 33 – 34

AY DE TI SI NO EVANGELIZAS!

Cinco minutos de la nueva Evangelización:

La Evangelización es un paso complejo, con

    elementos variados: renovación de la

    humanidad, testimonio, anuncio explicito,

adhesión del corazón, entrada en la

comunidad, acogida de los signos, iniciativa de

    apostolado. Estos elementos pueden parecer

    contrastantes, incluso exclusivos. En realidad

    son complementarios y mutuamente

enriquecedores.

invitados. Inmediatamente después continuamos con nuestro Grupo de

    Oración de 7:00pm a 8:00pm.
