Scriptural Reflection for the Week “With great power the apostles bore witness to the resurrec on of the Lord Jesus, ...There was no needy person among them, for those who owned property or houses would sell them, bring the proceeds of the sale, and put them at the feet of the apostles, and they were distributed to each according to need.” (See Acts of the Apostles 4:32-35) During the Easter Season we have just begun, the First Reading of the Mass is taken from Saint Luke’s Acts of the Apostles. Obviously, the content of this book of the Bible is about how the early, first Chris ans lived or “acted”. Remember, these are the people who “were there” at Jesus’ Resurrec on from the dead. They are the ones fully knowledgeable and engaged in the meaning of this unique event. The Lord Jesus’ Resurrec on had a definite effect on those who were witnesses of it. The above Scripture verse speaks of the “great power” of their witness. For sure, to sell off one’s property to help others in need demonstrates the power that the Lord’s Resurrec on had over all those first Chris ans. No one would take such a dras c step without an interior change of heart and mind. They were convinced that following this Jesus who was crucified before their eyes and now risen meant and demanded a new lifestyle. They knew that to follow this Messiah meant no longer thinking of themselves but others. And doing so in a very concrete and prac cal way. It was their ac on towards the relief of those who were needy that bore the best witness to Jesus Crucified and Risen. Chris ans of all mes and places are called to give such witness. The Christian community described in Acts understood and practiced total stewardship. Saint Paul reports that the believers did not claim anything as their own, but held everything in common and distributed to each whatever was needed.

HELPING THOSE IN NEED
In the Gospel today, Jesus stands in the midst and says, “Peace be with you.” We ask that the Risen Lord give joy to those who live in sadness, hope to those who live in despair, faith to those who live in doubt and peace to those who live in suffering. When you contribute to the Poor Box and bring food for the pantry, you are helping to bring some peace into the live to those who are in need.
We thank all our volunteers, those who bring food for the pantry and organizations like Long Island Cares, and Island Harvest.

A Personal Reflection — A few months back a “guest” came to Outreach and was very distressed over their family’s current situation. I sat and listened to the concerns for their children and tried to help in any way we could. Along with helping the family with food, we spoke about spending time in prayer and asking God to help them through this difficult time. In the conversation the person revealed that they were Roman Catholic, but had stopped practicing because life got busy. I encouraged them to return through the Sacrament of Reconciliation and gave printed instructions on the Sacrament from the USCCB. I also urged them to go to Sunday Mass and to begin visiting our Adoration Chapel when they were nearby; they said they would try. This “guest” visited Outreach a few more times over a three to four month time period, and, was still very upset. Finally, there was a breakthrough; the family was able to resolve one of the major issues that needed to be addressed. Praise God — they were so grateful for our help and for answered prayer!
About a month later this same “guest” returned to our Outreach Office, again in tears. This time with happy, joyful, grateful tears and so thankful for our help — your help! They told me how their children are much more at peace now. They spoke of how they went to confession, are back going to Mass, and how they visit the Adoration Chapel every other day!
Wow, that is real answered prayer! The Good Shepherd went after the lost sheep and brought them back home!

A campaign led by our Respect Life Committee helps unwed mothers and their babies get a healthy start in life. Funds raised are shared with a number of charitable groups each year. Baby bottles were distributed prior to first week of Season of Lent and individuals and families return bottles filled with loose change during the 40 days of season.

By our solemn promise, we will gather and pray the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, pray the Chaplet of the Precious Blood of Jesus Christ, observe the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and observe the devotions of Our Lady of Fatima to make reparations for our sins and the sins of all mankind.

These players will be eligible to play on a team in the fall, and you can sign up to be on a team at the clinic. No fees are due at this time.
The clinic will be run by our own CYO coaches. You must live within the boundaries of St Vincent's parish to participate in the clinic and register for a team in the fall. It all takes place at St Vincent's parish gym. Please use the side entrance of the gym, on the North/West side of the building off Cross Street. If you would like to get involved in basketball and be on a team come September, now's the time to come to the clinic and have some fun.
The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us – all of us. He wants us to know that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us, to others. The Divine Mercy message is one we can call to mind simply by remembering ABC: A - Ask for His Mercy. God wants us to approach Him in prayer constantly, repen ng of our sins and asking Him to pour His mercy out upon us and upon the whole world. B - Be merciful. God wants us to receive His mer-cy and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to extend love and forgiveness to others just as He does to us. C - Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will receive.

Peace and Mercy
O n the eve of WWII, Jesus appears to a little nun from Poland named Sister Kowalska whose contemplation on the Mercy of God led her to develop a childlike trust in God and deep love for her neighbor. Almost as if
preparing her for the evils that would follow, both in Poland and throughout the world, Jesus revealed to her His message of Love and Divine Mercy, and left her with a chaplet consisting of the recitation of prayers to the Eternal Father with the use of the rosary for the sake of Christ’s sorrowful passion.
Immediately, devotions began to the Divine Mercy, but the Bishops who wanted to verify the validity of the reported apparitions couldn’t tell if the apparitions were true due to bad translations of the material. Sadly, they put a ban on the message. However there was a Polish Bishop who had read the documents and felt the Vatican needed a better translation, so he began to gather more information. Rome received his material and, after a second review, the ban was lifted. Six months later, that same Bishop would be elected to the chair of Saint Peter and he would come to be known as Pope John Paul II. Years later, at the Canonization Mass of Saint Faustina, Saint Pope John Paul II proclaimed the Second Sunday of Easter would forever be celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday. When celebrating Divine Mercy Sunday, we are called to reflect more personally on the peace and
graces won through the life, death, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ.
It is fitting that in today’s Gospel, Jesus greets His disciples with the gift of peace, and then commissions His disciples to continue the work that he has begun and gives them the gift of the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ words also highlight the integral connection between the forgiveness of sins
and the gift of the Holy Spirit. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can share forgiveness and reconciliation with others. Jesus offers us a deeper, longer lasting peace, one that we won’t find in this world. It is a peace that allows us to withstand the trials, disappointments, and sufferings in life, as well as the peace that can build unity within marriages, families, parishes, communities and nations. The peace and mercy we receive are not meant for us alone but is meant to be shared. This is exactly what we are praying for during the Mass when the priest recites the words (inspired by many of St. Paul’s letters) “The peace of the Lord be with you always.”
Early on, the rite of peace was before the Offertory and followed the Prayers of the Faithful. Perhaps it was initially placed there as an allusion to the passage found in Matthew’s Gospel: If you are bringing your offering to the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your offering there before the altar, go and be reconciled with your brother first, and then come back and present your offering.
It was later moved as the rite of peace can be seen as connecting the Our Father with the reception of Holy Communion about to take place. It is a reflection of the Lord’s Prayer which expresses the unity of all God’s people and encourages us to forgive others as we have been forgiven. At the same time, it symbolically anticipates the unity we share as a parish family that we receive in the consecrated Eucharist. Before being united we must exchange some sign of peace because humility, charity, and love can only grow in an atmosphere of peace. Let us take this moment to recall that we have been forgiven through Jesus’ sacrifice. Let us take time to examine our own lives, just in case anyone or anything is left in need of His Divine Mercy!

The ABC of Mercy
I grew up attending Mass every Sunday with my family. My parents taught us to treat others as we would want to be treated, as well as, to help others when they were in need. They also encouraged us to pray for those who we could not help. My mother was, as I called her, “an angel on earth”. She always had a way of fixing any problem, whether it was a broken item or a broken heart. She was a wonderful woman who gave her time to all who needed it, even if she didn’t have the physical time to give. My mother passed away 5 years ago and she finally received ‘those wings’ she earned. My mother is the reason I became a catechist. I wanted to continue her passion of instilling God’s Love on the world.
This is the fourth year I am teaching a Level 1 Faith Formation class. My experience as an elementary school teacher, in addition to having the Catholic Faith devotion my parents taught me, made me feel that I was qualified for this position. Teaching these young children each week about the stories of God, Jesus, the apostles and the saints makes being a catechist an important job. Watching their eyes fill up with wonder during the telling of Jesus’ birth, and listening to so many questions about his death, make me feel fulfilled. Adding my excitement and enthusiasm to each lesson allows the children to show their own curiosity about the life of Jesus.
Teaching a Faith Formation class is not easy. It takes dedication to the program, an understanding of one’s beliefs and of course, a love of children. I believe my mother is very proud of me for teaching children a faith in which she and her family so fondly believed. This is an experience I would not trade for anything! If you would like to share your love of the Lord, please consider becoming a catechist in our parish.

My name is Anna Affrunti and I would like to take a moment to tell you about my journey in becoming a catechist. One Sunday while attending Mass, Debbie Hurley, the Faith Formation director had spoken to us about a shortage of catechists. I began to feel a need to help, and I volunteered right away. Since I was very limited in my knowledge of teaching, I was afraid that I might not be up to the task; but something inside of me kept telling me to do it.
When I got home I asked my husband if he would help me teach. Despite being a little fearful himself he said yes. Before we knew it, we had taught the class for a full year, and we felt so rewarded. We have been teaching 2nd Grade where we are preparing the children to receive Reconciliation and Eucharist for the first time. We both connect with the children and share our love of the Sacraments. Going to Reconciliation and receiving Jesus through the Eucharist is a priority in our lives and we try to share that with our students. This year we gave all our students the Act of Contrition prayer in a frame so they could put it in their room and have it close at hand. The children wanted to learn about the stories, traditions, and prayers of our religion, and to get closer to God.
Through helping these children grow, we ourselves have grown in our faith and in the teachings of the church. It was such a wonderful experience that we decided to bring our daughter in as an aide and the following year, our niece also joined as an aide. Watching both of them grow in the church and deepen their relationships with Jesus is such a joy. Today we look forward to every Monday when we go to Faith Formation and share our faith with our students.

On Palm Sunday, March 25, many faithful gathered in the Sienna Center for Crea ve Ministries’ presenta on of the Sta ons of the Cross. They walked with Jesus through his trial, His journey though the streets up to His final moments on the Cross in this moving presenta on.
Msgr. Rick opened the evening with a welcome and prayer. Through narra ve and song, Crea ve Ministries allowed the faithful to experience the devasta on of Mary, the frustra on of Simon, the loneliness of John, and the excrucia ng pain and degrada on Jesus suffered on the way to Calvary. This experience allowed many to open their hearts to the Passion of our Lord and bring them to greater understanding of His sacrifice for us.

On Wednesday Pope Francis said the Easter Triduum is the most important time of year for Christians, and stressed that those who truly allow themselves to be transformed by Jesus' resurrection, while still being sinners, cannot be corrupt.
“A Christian, if he truly allows himself to be washed by Christ, if he truly lets himself be stripped of the 'old man' to walk in a new life, even while remaining a sinner, he cannot be corrupt,” the Pope said March 28. “He can no longer live with death in the soul, nor can he be the cause of death.”
The justification Jesus offered by dying on the cross “saves us from corruption,” he said, stressing, as he often has, that while everyone is a sinner, Christians must never be corrupt.
Francis said it is “sad and painful” to see “fake Christians” who claim to be walking according to the path given by Jesus after his resurrection, but who, in reality, are living a corrupt life.
“These fake-Christians will end poorly,” he said, adding that “a Christian, I repeat, is a sinner, we all are, I am, but we have the certainty that when we ask for forgiveness the Lord will forgive us. The fake Christian pretends to ask for forgiveness, but in their heart is rotten.”
He then asked pilgrims to join him in praying for these “mafia-Christians,” who say they follow Christ, but in reality harm themselves and others. “Let us pray for them,” he said, “that the Lord would touch their heart and soul.”
Pope Francis spoke to pilgrims gathered for his weekly general audience in St Peter's Square. He dedicated his catechesis to the Easter Triduum, which he said are “the most important days in the liturgical year,” and signify “the fundamental phases of our faith and of our vocation in the world.”
All Christians, he said, “are called to live the three holy days as, so to speak, the 'matrix' of their personal and community lives.” He pointed to St. Paul's assertion in the Second Book of Corinthians that “the old has passed away, behold, the new has come.” Later, in his letter to the Romans, Paul describes the Easter transformation in a different way, saying Christ “was put to death for
our trespasses and raised for our justification.”
“The only, the only one that justifies you, the only one that makes you born again is Jesus Christ, no one else!” the Pope said in off-the-cuff remarks, adding that “this is the greatness of the love of Jesus: he gave his life to make us holy, to renew us, to forgive us. And this is precisely the core of the paschal mystery.”
In the Triduum, the memory of Christ's death and resurrection is celebrated and at the same time renews in those who are baptized during the liturgy “the meaning of their new condition,” he said.
This is why there are always people who are baptized during the Easter vigil, Francis explained, noting that during this week's vigil in St. Peter's Basilica he will baptize eight people “who will begin their Christian life” in the Church.
Easter is also a time for solidarity with those who suffer, he said, noting that Christians can see the face of Christ in the vulnerable and those experiencing pain, and are able to love them with the same love Jesus offered through his sacrifice on the cross.
In another aside, Francis noted how in many countries, including Argentina, mothers will take their children to wash their face and eyes on Easter morning as a symbol of being able to see “in a new way, to see things in the way of Jesus.”
He encouraged everyone with children to try this, seeing it as a concrete “sign of how to see Jesus risen.”
Pope Francis closed his speech by asking that Mary would accompany everyone as the Triduum begins, that they may be “more deeply inserted into the mystery of Christ, his death and resurrection for us.”
Mary “followed Jesus in his Passion, was present and united to him on the Cross, and received in her maternal heart the immense joy of the resurrection,” he said, and prayed that she would obtain for all “the grace of being internally moved by the celebrations of the coming days, so that our heart and our lives will truly be transformed.”
After his speech, Pope Francis greeted pilgrims in different languages from around the world. In his greeting to Spanish-speaking pilgrims, he encouraged them to “have the courage to go to confession in these days, make a good confession!”
