As I mentioned last week, in 2020 we hear readings at Mass from Cycle A, which
goes through passages from Matthew’s gospel. Except today, as we dive into the
first part of Ordinary Time, the church has selected today’s gospel from John the
Evangelist. Unlike the other three gospel writers, John does not have tell the story
of Jesus being baptized but instead shares this encounter of John the Baptist
meeting Jesus as a bridge into Jesus’ ministry, which is begun through his
anointing with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. Just as in the story of Noah, the
dove symbolized a new beginning, so here John is communicating that Jesus is
not just beginning his preaching and healing stage of his life, but a whole new era
in human history. Probably a good reminder if you are one of those persons who
made some resolutions for the new year and have already been failing in
maintaining in keeping them up. Perhaps the better approach is to notice what
new things have been bubbling up in your life in your recent past and to call
upon the grace of your own baptism to understand better what ways Jesus is
blessing you with his Holy Spirit and to what ends he is guiding you to go. Part of
the vision of the Uniting in Heart Plan is to encourage us to be better at activating
our faith in a way that we are more intentional in our relationship with God and
inviting others to have or grow in their own relationship with him. May others
recognize us as true followers of Christ so that they can “behold the Lamb of God
who takes away the sins of the world.”

Como mencioné la semana pasada, en 2020 escuchamos lecturas en la Misa del
Ciclo A, que pasa por pasajes del evangelio de Mateo. Excepto hoy, cuando nos
sumergimos en la primera parte del Tiempo Ordinario, la iglesia ha seleccionado
el evangelio de hoy de Juan el Evangelista. A diferencia de los otros tres
escritores del evangelio, Juan no cuenta la historia de Jesús bautizado, sino que
comparte este encuentro de Juan el Bautista conociendo a Jesús como un
puente hacia el ministerio de Jesús, que se inicia a través de su unción con el
Espíritu Santo en la forma de una paloma Al igual que en la historia de Noé, la
paloma simbolizó un nuevo comienzo, así que Juan está comunicando que Jesús
no solo está comenzando su etapa de predicación y curación de su vida, sino
una era completamente nueva en la historia humana. Probablemente sea un
buen recordatorio si usted es una de esas personas que hizo algunas resoluciones
para el nuevo año y ya no ha logrado mantenerlas. Quizás el mejor enfoque es
notar qué cosas nuevas han estado surgiendo en su vida en su pasado reciente
y recurrir a la gracia de su propio bautismo para comprender mejor de qué
manera Jesús lo está bendiciendo con su Espíritu Santo y para qué fines es
guiándote para que vayas. Parte de la visión del Plan Unirse en el Corazón es
alentarnos a ser mejores para activar nuestra fe de una manera que tengamos
más intenciones en nuestra relación con Dios e invitar a otros a tener o crecer en
su propia relación con él. Que otros nos reconozcan como verdaderos
seguidores de Cristo para que puedan "contemplar al Cordero de Dios que quita
los pecados del mundo".

INDIANA MARCH FOR LIFE 2020
Join the Indiana regional March for Life Wed, Jan. 22. 10:30am Mass at St. John the
Evangelist Catholic Church, Indianapolis with Archbishop Charles Thompson and
Bishop Timothy Doherty followed by a Memorial Service for the Unborn at the
Indiana Convention Center 500 Ballroom. Marchers leave at 12:00pm from
Georgia Street to process to Capitol Building for a Rally for Life at the south steps of
the Indiana State House at 12:45pm.

UPDATE ON THE DIOCESAN PASTORAL PLAN “UNITING IN HEART”
Last month our Bishop Timothy Doherty announced that our diocese was
accepted to receive the second phase of a national grant from Lilly Endowment
Inc. “Receiving phase II of this grant is such a blessing for our diocese to continue
garnering the resources to prayerfully implement the Pastoral Plan Uniting in
Heart,” said Bishop Doherty. The grant, which extends over three years, awarded
the Diocese of Lafayette-in-Indiana one million dollars. As a part of the grant
agreement, the diocese must match the grant dollar-for-dollar by the end of the
