Attendance and AbsencesSuccess in school is dependent to a large extent onbeing in school every day. Minnesota State Lawrequires that each child between age seven andeighteen attend school full time. The following areconsidered acceptable reasons to miss school:

1. Illness2. Religious Holidays3. Medical or Dental Appointments

Absence: A parent/guardian should call the Oak Viewattendance line (506-5606) to report an absence before9:30 a.m.

Parent Link: OVMS uses an automated calling systemcalled Parent/guardian Link to notify parents/guardiansof their student’s absence. If we do not receive priornotification from a parent/guardian about an absence, our automated calling system will contact you for moreinformation.

Other Absences: If you know in advance you are going tobe absent, bring a note from home at least one day inadvance to make arrangements. A yellow slip will beissued. Doctor and dental appointments should bemade outside of school hours whenever possible. Ifstudents are absent during the school day for doctorand dental appointments, they should contact HealthServices.

Vacations: We always encourage parents/guardians toavoid pulling students out of school for lengthy vacationsduring the school year. There are many activities whichhappen in the classroom that can’t be duplicated throughmakeup work. We also understand that sometimes, because of work schedules, it can’t be avoided.

Missed Work: If a student is to miss a series of days, itis especially important that the student does not haveany missing work prior to leaving. Our teachers wouldthen prefer that you receive your makeup work uponyour return. It is often difficult to hand out the workprevious to the leave because there may beadjustments to the lessons from day to day.

Late to school: If the student arrives to school after8:25, they should report directly to the Student ServicesOffice and obtain an admit slip.

Makeup work: After any absence, it is the student'sresponsibility to ask the teacher upon return to school. You may request materials the morning of the third dayof absence. Homework is available to pick up no laterthan 4:00 PM in the Student Services Office on thefollowing day. Students have two days to make up workfor each day missed.
