Playful Poppies Pattern Instructions

By Ann Lauer of Grizzly Gulch Gallery

Lap quilt 61” x 61”

Please read all instructions before you begin. All seams are ¼” and all strips are cut selvage to selvage. Press strip sets and finished components gently so as not to distort the pieces.

Overview This quilt has been made in two colorways. Five fabrics have been used in the green quilt and six fabrics have been used in the red, black & green quilt. Fabric descriptions/numbers are listed below for both quilts. For reference, cut a ¼” swatch from each fabric for the quilt you are making, staple it to a piece of paper and label it appropriately, 1 to 5 or 1 - 6. Green Quilt Fabric 1 Poppy Panache – Lt.Green/Multi 620-04 Fabric 2 Squares & Dots – Dark Green 625-44 Fabric 3 Squares & Dots – Light Olive 625-04 Fabric 4 Poppy Outline – Dark Green 623-44 Fabric 5 Circles – Green 628-44 Red, Black & Green Quilt Fabric 1 Poppy Panache – White/Multi 620-09 Fabric 2 Squares & Dots – Dark Red 625-10 Fabric 3 Squares& Dots – Light Olive 625-04 Fabric 4 Poppy Outline – Dark Green 623-44 Fabric 5 Mini Bud – Black/Multi 624-12 Fabric 6 Poppy Bouquet – Black/Multi 622-12 Cut half rectangle triangles using an acrylic half rectangle tool such as the Nifty Notions half rectangle, the Perfect Rectangle from Creative Grids or the Recs half rectangle from Tri-Recs or any other half rectangle tool that will make half rectangle triangles 5 ½” high. Note: 42” wide fabric will yield 22 triangles.

Cutting Fabric 1 Fussy cut 9, 10 ½” squares centering the large poppy.

Tip: When fussy cutting the squares, mark off the 10 ½” lines on your square ruler with tape to help center the image in the square space.

Fabric 2 Cut 4 strips 5 ½” wide for half rectangle triangles to be used with Fabric 3 in the blocks. Cut 2 strips 5 ½” wide for half rectangle triangles to be used with Fabric 5 in Border #2. Cut 1 strip 2” wide. Subcut into 4 2” squares for the corner stones in the sashing. Fabric 3 Cut 4 strips 5 ½” wide for half rectangle triangles to be used with Fabric 2 in the blocks. Fabric 4 Cut 6 strips 2” wide. Subcut into 12 segments 2” x 15 ½” for the sashing.

2

Cut 5 strips 1 ½” wide for the inner borders. Fabric 5 Cut 2 strips 5 ½” wide for half rectangle triangles to be used with Fabric 2 in Border #2. For the Green quilt, cut 3 strips 3” wide. Subcut into 40 3” squares. For the Red, Black & Green quilt, cut 1 strip 3” wide and subcut it into 4 3” squares. Cut 6 strips 3 ½” wide for the outer borders. Cut 6 strips 2 ½” wide for binding. Fabric 6 For the Red, Black & Green quilt, cut 3 strips 3” wide and subcut into 36 3” squares.

Construction Half Rectangle Units using Fabrics #2 & #5 Note: 42” wide fabric will yield a maximum of 22 triangles.

1. Layer a 5 ½” strip of Fabric 2 on top of a 5 ½” strip of Fabric 5 right sides up. Follow the instructions with the ruler and cut 20 triangles through both layers. Keep these sets of triangles together.

2. Follow the instructions in Step 1 above except layer Fabric 2 and Fabric 5 wrong sides up and cut 20 triangles. Keep these sets of triangles together.

3. Piece each of the sets of triangles into rectangles. These rectangles should measure 3” x 5 ½”. Press the seams in one set toward the dark fabric and press the seams in the other set away from the dark fabric.

4. Sew these 2 rectangles together. The rectangle units should measure 3” x 10 ½”. The seams

should oppose and therefore nest. Make 20 units for Border #2.

Half Rectangle Units using Fabrics #2 & #3 1. Repeat the procedure above for making half rectangle units but this time layer Fabric 2 on top of Fabric 3. Repeat with a second layer. Cut 36 triangles from the fabrics layered right sides up and 36 triangles from the units layered wrong sides up. 2. Piece the triangles together and press the seams in one set toward the dark fabric and press the seams in the other set away from the dark fabric.

3. Sew these 2 rectangles together. The rectangle units should measure 3” x 10 ½”. The seams should oppose and therefore nest. Make 36 units for the blocks.

3

Constructing the Block 1. Sew a half rectangle unit of Fabrics 2 & 3 to each side of a 10 ½” square of Fabric 1. Position

the unit as shown. Make 9.

2. Sew a 3” square of Fabric 5 to each end of a half rectangle unit. Make 18.

3. Sew a unit from Step 2 to the top and bottom of the unit from Step 1. Rotate as needed so that the half rectangles are positioned as shown. The block is complete and should measure 15 ½”. Make 9.

Layout and Sashing (Refer to the diagram as needed.) 1. Layout the blocks in 3 rows of 3 blocks each positioning the poppies as you like. 2. Sew a 2” x 15 ½” segment of Fabric 4 between each of the blocks in the rows. Press toward

the sashing. 3. Sew a 2” square of Fabric 2 between three sashing segments 2” x 15 ½” of Fabric 4. Press

toward the sashing. Make 2. 4. Sew the pieced sashing strips between the 3 rows. Press toward the sashing. 5. Sew the 3 rows together. 6. Press first from the back and then from the front being careful not to press in any pleats.

Inner Borders - Fabric 4 1. Sew the strips for the 1” finished inner border into one long strip. The seams will show less if

you piece them diagonally. 2. Before sewing the inner borders to the quilt, measure the width and length of the quilt across

the center and cut border strips this length. Divide the border strip into fourths, mark the divisions with pins. Divide the length of the quilt into fourths and mark the divisions with pins. Now pin the border strip to the quilt matching the pins. Sew the border onto the quilt easing

4

between the pins if necessary. This will keep your quilt from “growing” with each border. Sew the side borders onto the quilt first; then the top and bottom borders.

Pieced Border #2 1. Sew 5 units of the half rectangles of Fabrics 2 & 5 together to make one border. Make 4.

2. Sew a border to each side of the quilt positioning the half rectangles as shown in the diagram. 3. Sew a 3” square of Fabric 5 to each end of the remaining two borders and sew them to the top

and bottom of the quilt.

Outer Borders – Fabric 5 The outer borders were cut 3 ½” wide. Follow Steps 1 & 2 under Inner Borders and sew the border strips together and then to the quilt.

Binding 1. Diagonally piece the binding strips into one long strip. Then fold the strip in half lengthwise

wrong sides together and press. 2. Align the raw edge of the binding with the edge of the quilt. Stitch with a 3/8” seam allowance

and miter the corners. 3. Bring the folded edge of the binding to the back of the quilt and stitch it in place with a blind

hemstitch.
