Who We Are

• The Scarborough Hospital (TSH) is Canada’s largest urban community hospital.

• We are a leader in research, teaching and learning. • Serving a community of almost one million people • TSH has 3,700 staff, more than 700 physicians, and

600 active volunteers.

The Community We Serve

• The Scarborough Hospital services Canada’s most diverse population.

• Two thirds of the Scarborough population are visible minorities compared with the rest of Toronto

• The top 3 languages spoken following English are: Chinese, Cantonese and Tamil.

• In 2006, 57% of the total population were immigrants.

The Community We Serve

• 12% of the population arrived in Canada between 2001 to 2006

• One in four of the Scarborough population is considered to be low income.

• A significant portion of Scarborough's population is composed of immigrants and descendants of immigrants who have arrived in the last four decades. Recent immigration to Scarborough by country of birth is from People’s Republic to China, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Jamaica, Afghanistan, Iran and South Korea.

The Community We Serve

• Visible minorites make up 67.4% of the population. South Asian residents make up 22.0% of the population, Chinese residents account for 19.5% of the population, Black Canadians residents make up 10.3% of the population, while Filipino Canadian residents account for 6.5%.The remaining visible minority groups each represent less than 2% of the population.

Religion in Scarborough

• 60% of Scarborough residentes are Christian.• The second largest religion is Hinduism (22%).• In addition, within the Canadian population having a

non-Christian religion, about one-half would be a Muslim by 2031, up from 35% in 2006.

Future Demographic Shift

• By 2031, the projection by Statistics Canada is one in three Canadians will belong to a visible minority. More than 60 percent of Toronto’s population will belong to a visible minority in 20 years. South Asians, those with origins in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka will make-up the largest visible minority group[1].
