STORMWATER PARK Springfield, Massachusetts University of Massachusetts | Fall 2011

Boston ASLA Merit Award Adaptive retrofit infiltration systems along streets reduce the impact of runoff on ur-ban watersheds. Design interventions on a boulevard in Springfield, MA are presented as distinguishable aesthetic experiences to raise acceptance, increase the spatial use, and to make infiltration more desirable in urban environments. This interdisciplinary proposal was developed through collabora-tion with the Springfield Water and Sewer Commission with the intention of being im-plemented as a pilot project that could be replicated elsewhere in the city and region. This project is currently under construction.

The final design addressed both environmental and social issues utilizing eight different stormwater BMPs including: curb cut retention basins, runnel retention, sand filters, bioretention, grass swales, permeable pavers, subgrade storage, and permeable concrete. Social aspects are addressed through the establishment of spaces for interaction and serves as destination points for both local residents as well as visitors to surrounding businesses. Following the construction of these BMPs, the city will continue to monitor the effectiveness and ease of maintenance to determine how these solutions can be implemented throughout the city.

The goal of the project is to develop a master plan for a healthcare complex housing a tuberculosis clinic in Takhar, Afghanistan that incorporates the desired functions of the clinic within the framework of a culturally sensitive design utilizing principles of contemporary restorative garden theory. The site will provide the patients of the complex and their families with a safe location to gather and rest while they are recovering or dealing with a loved one’s recovery. A clear circulation system will provide for patient movement, service access, and parking areas that keeps patient areas private and serene separate from service areas.

McGrath Highway in its current state divides the city of Somerville geographically, socially, and physically. Three scenarios were developed to address various issues. The gray scenario shown here addresses these and additional concerns that provide more immediate simpler solutions as the city transitions into a green multi-modal corridor. This proposal creates multi-modal transportation connections across McGrath and to local destinations, commercial infill that creates a stronger commercial corridor with more jobs, and improves the community aesthetics with streetscape improvements including new art facades, sculpture installations, tree lined streets, and a significant decrease in impervious surfaces.

A sustainable housing development was designed to support a lower cost of development creating a more desirable place to live. A range of affordable housing options are used to shape and define great spaces for individuals, family, and community. The layout is sensitive to the topography of the site, implements quality stormwater management, and uses passive solar design. A grading plan was completed for the site. Finish floor elevations were established to provide a detailing of private spaces and circulation. The site was laid out in accordance with town of Amherst subdivision regulations and conservation requirements for a multi-family housing devlopment.

A young family of 3 in north Amherst sought to create an private outdoor escape with open lawns for play. The primary objective was to provide edge to the site creating privacy and safety from the adjacent street. The master plan is adapted to better utilize existing features on site providing economical and functional updates to the site.

URBAN WILDERNESS & HISTORIC CORRIDORKnoxville, TennesseeEast Tenn. Community Design Center | Spring 2008 2010 Knoxville Metropolitan Planning Commission Award of Excellence in Environmental Sustainability

The Urban Wilderness is a 1,000-acre urban forest connecting an existing nature education center, three civil war forts, a state wildlife management area, and ten city parks that promotes the value of parks, recre-ation, and land conservation as an economic driver for the greater community. This project will keep signifi-cant open space and ridgetops of South Knoxville pre-served and protected in perpetuity for the benefits of current residents and those of generations to follow. After extensive landscape analysis and community design charettes, properties were identified based on connectivity potential, wildlife corridor potential, idyllic views, and ecological significance.
