THE URBAN CONEYOR FARM is located on the edge of the Little Italy and Downtown sectors of San Diego. Adjacent to the Santa Fe Amtrak Station, Museum of Contemporary Art and the iconic One America Plaza, it aims to provide an anchor for an unfortunately desselate section of Downtown San Diego. Another goal for this project is to bring awareness and appreciation for the food and it’s production that we as a society take for granted. The design of this building started on opposite ends of a spectrum. One considered the people and users of the space. An open courtyard area was designated to provide public space as well as

provide a buffer between the main towers and the adjacent 500’ tall One America Plaza. The implementation of the urban farm was based on the idea that plants can travel on a conveyor belt in an urban setting to access sunlight, ease the production process and maximize yield. For example, the conveyor belt climbs the west tower during the vegetative state of a plants life where sunlight is of greatest priority. Harvesting and planting are consolidated into a single area to simplify the production process.

THE HINGE APARTMENT COMPLEX is perched atop a hill and uniquely stradles an I-5 off-ramp as travelers approach Downtown San Diego. The name is derived from the motion inwhich the parts of building are connect, span and The complex itself has a unique form that embraces the site. The form maintains a dialogue with the off-ramp and takes a position which views the traffic as a spectacle rather than a disturbance.

THE EAST VILLAGE DANCE CENTER is located in Downtown San Diego that houses a Dance School, Two Performance Areas and a Restaurant. The design process was driven by the programmatic layout of the facility which is conscious and considerate of the various forms and experiences that is dance. The design considers dance in all forms, and most importantly, as an event that connects and brings people together. The design considers the various users. There are Performers and their are Spectators. The design embodies the various experiences when a spectator attends a concert. There are areas of gathering and socializing before, after and even during intermission. There are multiple bars, restaurant, lobby, outdoor patio and an “underbelly” balcony where spectators can gather and socialize in-between and around performances to provide a total experience. Spaces are wide and open to encourage gathering rather than movement and circulation. The design utilizes subtle level changes to carve space with minimal visual disconnect.

A large driver of the building’s design is the location and classification of a Formal and Informal performance area. The Formal area accommodates over 300 seats and provides a private, intimate performance setting. The Formal performance area shares its backstage with the Informal performance area. The Informal area is literally more open to the outside and the rest of the building. A large floor and two long balconies overlook the informal performance area. This area can accommodate for as the name suggests, informal dancing including using the space such as that in a dance club, where the audience are the dancers. The transition between the various programs is embodied by the wood facade. At the quieter north-end of the building, the wooden facade is closed to provide a private setting for the Formal Performance area. As the facade moves south, it breaks apart and morphs into a porous structure that supports the platforms of the Informal performance area as well as provide visual connectivity and a sense of openness to the public.

SOFT BODY ARCHITECTURE is a collaboration between Christopher Schulte, Michael Flynn and Ryan Raymundo under Instructor Gabriel Morales at the NewSchool of Architecture + Design located in San Diego, California. The project explores new architectural potentials via contemporary digital fabrication methods.

THESISThrough the implementation of contemporary technologies, architecture can and has the responsibility to address a multitude of issues beyond the reach of current architectural practices. The expansion and growth of contemporary society has given rise to complex scenarios that demand equally complex answers from a heavily modernist architectural discipline that is near full exhaustion. Architecture must respond and undergo a fundamental shift from the linear, rigid-body approach towards a behavioral model consistent with the continuous variation and adaptation prevalent in this

new society. We propose that the cross-disciplinary link between architecture and technology provides the means to which architecture can make this shift.

DIGITAL FABRICATION SYSTEMThe research explores different applications of sealed, pressurized, flexible membranes as formwork for fluid materials. The system specifies its components through the scale and external constraints necessary for a given scenario. Material properties such as weight, compressive strength, tensile strength and porosity along with programmatic and spatial requirements such as transparency, density, continuity and orientation determine the discrete configuration. It is then the interaction between the fluid matter and the soft membrane that derives the system behaviors and works to determine the ultimate form.

GLASS FIBER REINFORCED CONCRETE is a cementitious material that is used as the first component of the system. Whereas normal concrete is made up of cement, water, and aggregates, the concrete in this setup is a composite mix using water, cement, sand, structural fibers and a selection of admixtures based on desired material qualities. In comparison to conventional concrete, this mixture is lighter weight, capable of being cast thinner in sections, self-consolidating, LEED-certified, internally reinforced requiring no rebar, and more durable due to the lack of rust caused by steel rebar. The specific ratios of the composite mixture were constantly tested and evaluated in order to find the most desirable mix for different pours. Several admixtures including High-Range Water Reducing admixtures (super plasticizers), acrylic fortifiers, accelerators and Viscosity-Modifying Admixtures (VMAs) were utilized in order to change the fluid characteristics of the concrete. Several different forms of alkali resistant (AR) polypropylene fibers were also a part of the mix, imparting tensile integrity into the forms. LOW DENSITY POLYETHYLENE is the second component, which comes in rolls in a wide range of thicknesses and sizes and

in lengths up to 450’. This plastic has many advantages to it: it is inexpensive, durable, flexible and, most importantly, fully recyclable. After the concrete is cast inside the bag and cures, the plastic is able to be removed and recycled to create more bags. This ability is a significant advantage over all other potential formworks for the concrete. CNC LASERING TECHNOLOGY is the method which regulates the relationship between the first two compoenents.By raising the Z-height and adjusting the feed rate and intensity of the class IV CNC laser, the machine is able to provide strong welds between layers of the LDPE plastic. In comparison to other models of hand-stitching fabric, the process is extremely precise and fast, allowing for rapid prototyping as design research. Furthermore, the setup allows for scalability as the tubing can easily be sealed on the 4x8 bed, and then pulled through in order to continue the seal

Strategic patterning of the welds affords the designer high levels of control over many characteristics of the system.  Patterning controls the section-modulus via self spacing, while also negotiating the flow of material within sections of the membrane, which is crucial for a maximized distribution of the concrete. It determines porosity and allows for the gradient between light surfacing and heavier structural paths. Formation and patterning logic are subjects of a nonlinear translation process between 2-D and 3-D. After the basic form is modeled 3D, pattern logic begins with the assignment of critical structural paths in order to meet minimum fitness criteria, the most basic of which is that 3 points must meet the ground in order to stand. Surfacing is then assigned based on notions of enclosure and opening in the residual areas. Typically, a 3-D massing is sketched digitally, unrolled, and patterned according to the form, flow, volumetric pressure and sectional thickness. As pattern spacing corresponds to sectional thickness, pattern length corresponds to volumetric pressure, with longer welds better withstanding  adjacent high-pressure areas.

This thesis proposes an architecture that expands the already heavily-blurred border in order to promote bi-national collaboration as well as declare the region as a single, interdependent cooperation between two cities. The project proposes that in the near-future, physical barriers are broken down and expanded to accommodate a relationship far more complex than a metal fence. The border as of now is harsh and defined. The border represents and promotes a false stigma that is no longer consistent with the strong relationship between the two nations. Yes, there are many logistical difficulties to consider, but this proposal suggests the region as a whole must become more inclusive, rather than exclusive. The field release straddles the San Diego-Tijuana border on the west side of a canyon known as Smugglers Gulch. Smugglers Gulch

is infamous for, as it name suggests, a passage for illegal immigrants to cross the border. The 180-foot deep canyon is identified as the southernmost point of the border and lies less than 2 miles east of the of Pacific coast. The gulch “used to be home to some of the most important and rare coast scrub habitat in Southern California (at the edges)”, but in 2008, the US government filled in the gulch to provide border patrol access as well as provide a natural barrier against illegal border crossing. The field release aims to restore the site’s natural beauty, establish a model for border communities that promote and represent a bi-national collaboration as well as cleanse the area of any associated stigma.
