RUTHERFORD TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - 5th MARCH 2021

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Assessments

We have revised our assessment policies for all year groups. Years 7, 8 and 9 received

their Assessment Schedule booklet and Assessment Policy booklet in Week 4. Please

read the Policy booklet to make sure you are aware of all things to do with assessment

tasks.

Years 10 and 11 received their Assessment Schedule booklet in Weeks 3 and 4 and

again it is important that parents and carers are aware of procedures around

assessments. Please call the school if you have any questions regarding these

documents. If your child did not bring home these documents ask them to see their

Deputy Principal.

Uniform

The P&C supports Rutherford Technology High School as a uniform school. As a school we want every student to be proud

members of our school and wear our uniform with pride. The uniform shop is open two days a week and online orders are

also welcome. I strongly encourage students to be prepared for colder days by buying a school jumper and track pants.

Families need to collect an appropriate financial assistance form from the school administration office.

Senior Students

Our Year 12 students are almost halfway through their final year, amazing how quickly it goes. It has been very heartening

the number of Year 12 students who are turning up to a variety of Study sessions or workshops. We are providing our

students with tailored study sessions that meet their needs rather than running study days.

Year 11 students have started the year on a positive note. They have some flexibility in their timetable allowing them to have

an early leave day, Wednesday and a late arrival on Thursday. They will only have the privilege of doing this if they meet the

following obligations: attendance above 85%, no uniform infringements, no outstanding N-Awards, have completed All My

Own Work and Minimum Standards. It is expected that this time be used for study and not part time or casual work. Students

who decide to stay at school have the opportunity to do study in the Library.

Road Safety

I will finish off with road safety. We have had numerous calls from members of the public about the dangerous behaviour of

our students on roads. There have been some near misses this week as students are crossing roads without looking to see if

it is safe. It almost seems that they feel that if they are in a group then they have the right of way. Crossings must be used. If

you pick up or drop off students across the road from the school please reinforce that they must use the crossing and not run

across anywhere.

Mrs Lidija Nenad Deputy Principal

MATHEMATICS FACULTY REPORT Welcome to the Mathematics Faculty for 2021! Mathematics Faculty 2021 Staff: Mr Craig Trotter Mr Anthony Bougatsas Mrs Debbie Evans Mr Justin Farrell Mr Paul Forbes (M-W) Ms Charlotte Hewitt Mrs Trish Lasorsa Mr Mark Niddrie Mr Matthew Rees Ms Ashley Rooney Mrs Steffanie Smith Ms Kelly Young (Th-F) Mathematics Homework Homework is very important in Mathematics. Students who complete their homework on a regular basis are much more successful than those that do not. Mathematics homework is an opportunity to practice the skills learnt in class, and like anything, the more you practice, the better you get. Mathematics homework is given regularly at Rutherford Technology High School. What form it takes is determined by individual teachers. However, every Mathematics teacher will: issue homework; check and record homework; provide feedback to students and contact parents/caregivers when necessary. As parents, I ask you to be involved as much as possible and encourage your child to complete all homework on time - working together, I know we can make a difference. A part from set homework, it is also a very good idea for students to revise their school work regularly. This helps develop a good study routine and positive work ethic.+ MathsOnline MathsOnline is again up and running this year. Every student at Rutherford Technology High School has been provided with a MathsOnline account which is used at school but can also be used extensively at home to consolidate class work and for extra hours. Australian Mathematics Competition The Australian Mathematics Competition is held every year in August (Term 3) with students invited to participate. Ruther-ford Technology High School will again be involved - further details will be available closer to the date. Reminder: Maths tutoring (free of charge) available at school: 3:30pm-4:30pm every Thursday in K129. All welcome! If at any time during the year should you have any questions related to Mathematics please feel free to contact myself. Mr Craig Trotter Head Teacher Mathematics Faculty

‘Future Proofing’ Study

Dear Parents and Carers

As you might already know, we are excited to be offering the Future Proofing Study to all Year 8 at Rutherford Technology

High School. If you haven’t already done so, please let us know of your decision regarding your child’s involvement in this

study. You can visit the following website to complete the consent form online: https://www.fpstudy.org.au/RuthTech or

return the paper form if you have one.

This study is being run by researchers at the Black Dog Institute and the University of New South Wales, along with over 170

schools, to better understand the mental health challenges of early adolescence to adulthood. Students in the study will

complete surveys and try out mental health apps to identify and prevent symptoms of depression and anxiety.

The results of this study have real potential to inform government policy and the scientific community. For this reason, we are

keen to get a good representation from Rutherford Technology High School.

The research team have recorded a 10-minute information webinar for parents. If you wish to learn more about the study, you can watch the webinar here: https://youtu.be/Mf2OsMfFKSs

COMMITMENT RESPECT RESPONSBILITY

RUTHERFORD TECHNOLOGY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER - 5th MARCH 2021

Recently in our PBL lessons we have been revisiting how our core values are reflected in the classroom. Classrooms are a

great cross section of our community and all walks of life are represented. For this reason, we expect our students to ‘live’ as

examples and uphold our set of values. In short, our values are how we want everyone at Rutherford Technology High

School to ‘be’ not only ‘do’.

Being respectful in the classroom is:

► Valuing others opinions and rights to learn ► Actively listening ► Caring for yourself, others and the environment ► Following staff instructions ► Using appropriate language

Being responsible in the classroom is:

► Being safe

► Being in the right place at the right time

► Using electronic devices appropriately (more on that later)

► Owning your actions

► Making good choices

And being committed to learning looks like:

► Being prepared to learn

► Striving for personal best

► Engaged in learning

► Bringing equipment to class

► Collaborating with others

The use of mobile phones in the classroom is a burning issue and we have made in clear how students are to use their

devices. The ‘NO’ and ‘GO’ policy is a school wide initiative and it works to reflect our core values and how they are

expressed in the classroom. Now, I stand guilty of having my phone pretty much attached to me most of the time, and I know

it is the same for our students (we are all cyborgs!). However, there is a clear and present line between appropriate and

inappropriate use of our digital extensions. When used for learning smart phones can be a great resource – they are

instantaneous and easily accessible, however, used otherwise can be a great distraction. Inappropriate use shows a

disregard for our core values and eventually can result in it becoming a behaviour management issue – something we all wish

to avoid.

Basically, our core school values reflected by classroom expectations, are common sense. In order to get the best from school we need to put our best foot forward, and ‘aspire’ to becoming the best we possibly can.

Mr Andrew Rutherford
