WELCOME BACK

A warm welcome back is extended to all students who are enrolling at Rutherford Public School for 2018. We hope that the year will be enjoyable, fun and challenging for all students! We have started this year with an enrolment of over 930 students in 38 classes. Students have been placed into their 2018 classes last week. We are currently finalising all new enrolments and hope to minimise any changes that may be necessary. We ask that children (and teachers) are given time to settle into their new classes and make new friends. Although some children may be anxious about their new environment, children generally settle after a few weeks.

BUILDING WORKS

Our school has started to prepare for the major capital upgrade of our school facilities in 2018/2019. Over the holidays, eleven classrooms were moved to make way for the new construction area. Many of the teachers spent additional hours in the holidays packing, unpacking and cleaning rooms to ensure the rooms were ready for all students. Thank you also to Ben and the team from Progroup who worked tirelessly (and sometimes in 40+ degrees) to ensure the school was ready. It is anticipated that the building will commence in Semester 2. Plans for the new buildings are on display in our school office.

WELCOME KINDERGARTEN

We will welcome 135 young and enthusiastic students into their first year of formal education this week! Thank you to our parents who have ensured that the children are ready for “big school” and so supportive of their children’s education through our extensive orientation program last year. All students will complete their “Best Start” screening assessment as part of the Department of Education’s literacy strategy. Students will complete a short series of informal tasks so teachers can pinpoint areas of need and strength. Parents will receive a report of their child’s results during Term 1. We ask that all parents pay a one-off $45 “Kindergarten Pack” which has all student books, resources and school fees included. Please pay at the office.

OFFICE PROCEDURES

Our school office is a very busy place! Mrs Denise Mills (School Administrative Manager), Ms Lynsey Andrews, Mrs Kerry Farley, Mrs Kerry Gebbard, Mrs Ngaire Hansen and Mrs Kristy McConnell (School Administration Officers) are always available to help parents with any enquiries.

Office Hours: 8:30am - 3:30pm Monday - Friday

Visiting Parents: ALL parents and visitors must report to the office when visiting the school.

Payments: PARENT ONLINE PAYMENTS (POP) can be made to the school for amounts owing for students, via a secure payment page hosted by Westpac. Payments can be made using either a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. The payment page is accessed from the front page of the schools website by selecting $

Make a payment. Minimum payment is $10, and you can only pay for one child on each transaction.

EFTPOS: EFTPOS operational times are 8:00am until 12:00pm. No over the phone, fax or email transactions can be accepted. No P&C transactions (hats, skorts, socks, stockings, fete etc). No cash refunds or withdrawals. Minimum transaction amount of $10.00.

School Inductions: The office is responsible for managing workplace inductions for all volunteers and employees. Mr Gillard will be conducting these sessions each Wednesday at 9:00am beginning 21st February, and Thursday 1st March 2018.

Medications: As a general rule, the school does not administer non-prescribed medications. If medication is required during school hours, then it must be approved by the Principal. Parents/carers must complete a medication form if a child requires a specific medication or ongoing health management.

Absences: Parents may phone the school office during school hours to inform the school of their child’s absence. There will be no SMS text messages for absences until further notice.

First Aid: The office personnel will administer basic first aid to students when required. Parents will be contacted when the injury is more serious or the child is unwell. Emergency contacts must be kept up to date to ensure children can be collected from school. In emergency situations an ambulance will be called immediately. The school is covered for ambulance travel.

Appointments with staff: Appointments with teachers and the Principal can be made through the school office.

Correspondence: Parents who may not be living together and require separate copies of reports and notes should contact the school so arrangements can be made to provide extra copies of notes and school reports.

Dropping off late and collecting early: Students who are late to school must present to the school office to get a late pass. Late arrivals also need to be explained in writing or in person. Where no valid reason is given, students will be marked as “unjustified”. Students being collected before the afternoon dismissal bell must be signed out by a registered parent, carer or adult. Parents are asked to wait in the school office when collecting students. Please keep the school informed of any changes to parenting arrangements, emergency contacts or people listed as authorised to collect your child.

LITTLE DRAGONS 2018 Registrations for Rutherford Public School’s Little Dragon’s program will be open from Monday 5th February 2018 at the school office. When presenting to the office to register your child, please bring the following documentation: Birth Certificate Immunisation records Proof of Residence There will be a parent information session on Thursday 15th March from 9:30am to 11:00am in the Community Room. There will be two sessions again this year being 9:00am to 11:00am and 12:45pm to 2:45pm. The cost of the ‘Little Dragon’s ‘ program will be $30 per child which is payable to the front office before commencement of the program on Thursday 3rd May.

STUDENT INFORMATION SHEETS FOR TEACHERS Notes requesting student information and permissions for publishing photos and internet use will be sent home by class teachers. Teachers use this information throughout the year to manage student activities. Please complete these forms and return to school promptly. PARENT/TEACHER MEETINGS An opportunity to meet your child’s teacher will be organised at the end of Term 1. It is hoped that these interviews will give more information about how your child is progressing and coping with the demands of the curriculum and a brief ‘snapshot’ report will also be issued at the end of Term 1. Please feel free to introduce yourself to your child’s teacher over the coming weeks! If parents require a more formal interview and extended meeting before the end of Term 1, then parents should phone the office to make an interview time so teachers can organise their schedule. Morning periods are very busy. Teachers are unable to meet with parents at 9:10am as rolls need to be marked and lessons started for the day. We look forward to a productive partnership between home and school. SCHOOL CONTRIBUTION FEE All families in NSW public schools are asked to make a contribution to the ongoing costs associated in providing a quality education. Unlike some schools, Rutherford Public School does not have text book fees. All families will be invoiced for the one-off fee and it would be appreciated if the fee/s could be paid by the end of Term 1. The 2018 school contribution fee is: $45 per child or $90 per family. STUDENT HEALTH Has your child’s health needs changed over the school break? It is important that the school has up-to-date information about student health needs. Allergies and other medical conditions need to be managed by the school. Please contact the school if you need to update our school records. OUR SCHOOL IS A NUT-FREE ZONE Nuts and nut products such as Nutella and Peanut Butter should not be sent to school. Nut-free alternatives are available from most supermarkets and health food stores. We have a number of students in the school with life-threatening allergies to nuts, and not confined to just peanuts, but all nuts. Please ensure that the food your children bring to school contains no nuts or nut products. We appreciate your support in our efforts to ensure the health and well-being of these students.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING (PBL) Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a whole-school approach to proactive, school-wide behaviour management. It is research and evidence based practices and strategies for all students to increase academic performance, improve safety, decrease problem behaviour and establish a positive and inclusive environment. This year our school will introduce more core values in order to reinforce important behaviours for learning, school and in the community. The 10 school values for 2018 are:

Respect Responsibility Personal Best

Creativity Cooperation

Honesty Kindness Resilience

Participation Safety

Each classroom uses a behaviour consistency guide and promotes positive behaviour with rewards such as school Webland Tokens, Assembly Awards, Home Reading Awards, class stickers, principal visits, plus lots more!! If you have any questions or would like to know more, please contact your child’s classroom teacher. We also have our ‘5 Webland Ways’ which are used in all aspects/areas of the school. Students will bring home a 2018 PBL Booklet which explains some of the PBL procedures for 2018.

maximise playground space and ensure children have plenty of room to move.

Welcome to the 2018 school year! Stage two have begun to settle into their classes, getting to know new teachers and new friends. I look forward to watching friendships develop this year. Class Newsletters Each class will be sending home a class newsletter to inform parents about individual classroom expectations, including homework, topics being studied and opportunities to help in the classroom. Please make sure that you take the time to read all information presented in the newsletter so that you are well informed and ready for the 2018 school year with your teacher. Meetings Teachers in stage 2 are always happy to answer any concerns you have. It is however important to remember that if you need to spend an extended length of time talking with the teacher it is always best to ring the office and make a formal appointment to meet with either the teacher or the assistant principal. 2018 HOME READING PROGRAM Children will be bringing home their new 'Home Reading Program' record book this week. Reading is the single most important skill your child will learn at school and while many children have developed reading skills, further development depends on using these skills regularly. The card will be your child's only record for home reading and should be brought to school when they have reached 25, 50, 75, 100, 125, 150, 175 and 200 nights of home reading. Awards will be presented for every 25 nights of reading, up to a total count of 200 nights for the year. Children who reach the yearly 200 night target will receive a free book at the presentation day assemblies at the end of the year. Parents are asked to complete their child’s reading card. Younger students will need extra support whereas older students will be more independent. Parents should sign for each night the child reads (holiday periods and weekends can be included). The time spent reading each night will depend on the age of the student, other homework tasks and family schedules. *If your child reads more than one book in a night please record this in the same box as it is the number of nights of home reading, not the number of books. EARLY ACTION FOR SUCCESS This year Maxine Foley and Kylie South are our Early Action for Success Instructional Leaders. The Early Action for Success strategy aims to improve students' performance through a targeted approach in the early years. Our Instructional Leaders will undertake classroom based coaching and work ‘side by side’ in the classrooms with the K-2 teachers to continue to improve learning outcomes. Together, the Instructional Leaders and the K-2 teachers will plan engaging and targeted lessons to ensure all students are provided with maximum opportunities to succeed in literacy and numeracy. More information about the Early Action for Success Program can be found at: https://education.nsw.gov.au/our-priorities/improve-student-outcomes/early-action-for-success-at-a-glance

Years 3-6 and Year 2 club swimmers went to Maitland Pool for Rutherford Public School’s swimming carnival last Friday. It was an exciting day for all, with records challenged and kids having loads of fun. A big thank you to the Rutherford Public School staff members, as well as our parents and caregivers who volunteered their time to take up roles on the day to ensure the carnival ran smoothly. It is greatly appreciated! Which house won? You will have to wait until Friday to see! Age Swimming Champions will be presented with their medallions this Friday 9/2/18 at a short assembly in the primary quad at 9:10am. The winning house will also be revealed! Zone representatives will also be confirmed this week.

Dragon’s Nest Breakfast Club

Our mothers always told us that breakfast

is the most important meal of the day, and

like many favourite old sayings, it contains

far more than a grain of truth. Eating a

nutritious breakfast is important for

everyone – but especially for children, as it

can provide up to a third of their daily

nutrient needs. It also improves their

concentration and they are more likely to

be settled and happy and it allows them to

participate better in school life. Our

breakfast club relies heavily on donations

from the community and help from our

volunteers. If you are interested in

donating vegemite, honey, margarine,

strawberry jam, long life full cream milk,

napkins, plastic spoons and cups or would

like to volunteer at the breakfast club,

please contact Mrs Gandhi (CLO) in the

office. We would like to say a big thank

you to everyone who supports our

Breakfast Club. Please support our

Breakfast Club Sponsors

We would like to say a huge Thank You to the following

businesses who sponsored our Rutherford’s Got Talent

Quest by supplying vouchers for prizes. The finalists were

thrilled with their prizes!
