A WELL ATTENDED FARMWALKDairy Herd Management recently held afarmwalk at WilliamWilson’s dairy farm atKillybrack, Omagh in conjunction with CAFREDairy Development Advisers. Over 120farmers attended the event which highlightedsummer grazing issues in a difficult wetsummer.

William and his son-in-law Alan Beatty run a 150 cowherd, yielding an annual 8500 litres, on the outskirtsof Omagh.

There were three stops on the farmwalk. At the first Gary Watson of Dairy HerdManagement described how milkrecording has been transformed inrecent years and is now an essential toolin managing a dairy herd. He explainedthat the online service gives a completeherd management programme and canbe used to reduce duplication of data.

He covered the herd health screeningservice which enables the farmer toidentify cows with lower health statusand reduced performance due todiseases such as Johne’s and BVD. Garyalso talked about the role milk recording

can play in combating mastitis by helping identify cowswith high cell counts.

Local vet, Cathal Mc Namee of Campsie VeterinaryPractice then conducted a very practical workshop inthe Wilson’s modern Dairymaster parlour, demonstrating the California Mastitis Testing kit whichcan be used in conjunction with milk recording tohighlight high SCC quarters in the parlour.

Jane Sayers hosted an active discussion aroundmanaging the dairy herd when ground conditions aredifficult and how to achieve adequate dry matterintakes.

What It Does And How It WorksPower Factor is a measure of how efficiently electrical poweris consumed. In an ideal world Power Factor would be “unity”or 1; or in other words your electrical appliance would use allof the power coming into your premises efficiently.

Unfortunately, in the real world highly inductive loads reducePower Factor. This induction is caused by equipment such aslightly loaded electric motors, milk refridgeration, luminairetransformers and fluorescent lighting ballasts and weldingsets, etc.

In effect the power being delivered to your premises usuallyspikes to levels beyond what is normally required for mosttypes of electrical equipment, and as a result, you thecustomer ends up paying for this excess based on what isdelivered, rather than what is required, and as a result asignificant percentage of the electricity that you end up payingfor in your electricity bill is simply wasted.

The benefit of this process is to smooth out the voltage spikesin your supply and deliver it to your electrical equipment at theoptimal frequency it is designed to operate on and as anadded benefit, it will also extend the lifespan of yourappliances.

Excess electricity from the voltage spikes is temporarily storedin the capacitors incorporated within the treatment units, andis then released to the appliances at the correct and balancedfrequency. This ensures that you get full benefit of all of theelectricity that you are paying for, and as a result the overallkilowatt-hours supplied to your premises is reduced, whichmeans significant savings for you.
