This month I thought I’d cheer everyone up by commenting on the work of HM Revenue & Customs recently launched task forces !

A clear policy of the Coalition is to ensure those who do not stick to the tax rules are penalised. Tough self assessment and PAYE penalties are already being applied and benefits and expenses returns (P11D’s) have also come under recent scrutiny.

The Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury has said :

‘The Government is committed to tackling tax evasion and avoidance. HMRC’s task forces are cracking down on people who choose to break the rules and creating a level playing field for the majority who play by them.

Thirty new taskforces are to be launched by HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) in 2012-2013. They are planning to focus on those areas they feel will yield best results (from their perspective !).

The likely targets include:-the rag trade-the motor trade-indoor and outdoor markets

In addition online sellers are being targeted as HMRC recognise the number of people who are using internettrading (as opposed to the occasional sale of personal items) as the sole or significant source of (undeclared) income from buying and selling goods as a trade or business and who fail to pay the tax owed.

If you have any concerns in respect of the above it is worth contacting HMRC as a matter of some priority to make a disclosure rather than find through their own investigations they discover income which should have been subject to tax which will then also incur fines and penalties.

Record keeping is also a particular concern and it is important that, if as an individual personally, or with self employed status, and you have a requirement to submit a self assessment return you ensure that the information supplied is complete and accurate and ‘auditable’. If the Revenue choose to perform a compliance check they will expect to see, as applicable, the following:1) Bank statements2) Paying in/cheque books3) Sales invoices4) Receipts/Invoices5) Cash book6) Work diary7) Mileage records8) Property rental statements from letting agency.

If, like many, you are considering self employment please ensure you get the appropriate accounting records and ‘processes’ in place from the outset since it only becomes more of a challenge as the business starts to grow! COMPUTING

This Edition’s Feature is

...And A Good Time Was Had By All

This article is the seventh in a series written by Sarah Doig, a family & local historian who lives on the Suffolk/Norfolk border.

Details of all the services Sarah offers are on her website www.ancestral-heritage.co.uk. Sarah would also welcome feedback on her articles as well as suggestions for future ones.

destination on Bank Holidays, with the train companies putting on special Bank Holiday excursion services. However, many people chose to spend their day in their local community. The “Bury & Norwich Post” for August 5th 1884 - when Bank Holidays were still a novelty - carried a full-page spread reporting on the various events which took place across the region.

This brief report from Thetford provides us with an interesting picture of the local community’s festivities: “Amongst the principal features of the day was a water party, of the Wesleyan Sunday scholars and teachers, to Santon Downham: Messrs. Fison and Sons kindly

supplied four lighters, men and horses for the occasion. About 400 persons got on board by ticket, and a substantial tea was provided. Beautiful weather prevailed and a cricket match between Thetford and Botesdale was played on the abbey ground, the former winning”.

The newspaper also reports in considerable detail on the Temperance Fete held at Hardwick Hall which included a horticultural show with prizes in many fruit, vegetable and flower categories. Music for the day was supplied by the band of the 3rd Dragoon Guards and from the Royal Handbell Ringers and Glee Singers. The Suffolk Beekeepers’ Association had a tent in the grounds at which they demonstrated the humane system of bee management. During the afternoon several balloons were sent up (“the ascent of the “Mahdi” causing amusement” - why?? Ed.) and everyone had a picnic in the grounds.

Sports events proved popular in many towns. The town of Diss also held an annual athletics sports day on the cricket field in Roydon Road. Events included

the high jump, long jump, throwing a cricket ball (won by G Higgins having thrown the ball 86 yards) and the “Two Mile Bicycle Handicap” which “was the most exciting event of the day”. The Diss Rifle Band was on hand to play a selection of music to accompany the prize giving.

The inhabitants of Stowmarket held their third annual athletic sports in connection with the Stowmarket Bicycle Club with prizes totalling £80. The “One Mile Bicycle Handicap” had a first prize of a silver cup, second prize of a butter dish and toast rack, and third prize was a hot water jug! Other races included the “440 Yards Foot Race” (first prize for this was a salad bowl), the “Half-Mile Obstacle Race” with the first and second prizes as a biscuit box and sardine box respectively. Personally though, I think if I had been leading in the “200 Yards Foot Race” in which the first prize was again a biscuit box, I would have been tempted to allow myself to be pipped at the post to collect the second prize of half a dozen bottles of wine...

Nowadays we take Bank Holidays for granted. But did you know that official Bank Holidays were only introduced in the United Kingdom in 1871 by an Act of Parliament? It designated four such days in England, Wales and Ireland which were Easter Monday, Whit Monday, Boxing Day (St Stephen's Day in Ireland) and the first Monday in August. Good Friday and Christmas Day were considered traditional days of rest - like Sundays - and these were therefore not included in the Act. This law was in place for a century when it was superseded by a new Act which remains in force today.

Thanks to the rapid expansion of the railway network in the second half of the nineteenth century, the seaside became a very popular

The Sacred Bamboo

Nandina Domestica is commonly known as the Sacred Bamboo, but why? After studying many books I still have not found the answer. However, more important is the fact that it is a truly beautiful and elegant garden plant. It originates from China, Japan and India, having been first introduced into this country in the early 1800’s.

Although it looks nothing like one, it is related to the Berberis.

It is not actually a bamboo, but a look-alike and it is grown for its decorative foliage, attractive summer flowers and showy berries.

In Spring, the new foliage is attractively shaded red, becoming green in Summer before turning orange red in Autumn. This colour is maintained in mild Winters.

When the Winter weather becomes severe, the plant may die right down to the ground level, but it always rejuvenates.

In midsummer, branched sprays

of starry cream flowers appear at the tips of the stems and if the summer is hot, these are followed by bright, red berries. As mentioned earlier, the stems are those of a typical bamboo, forming a neat clump, but unlike some bamboos, they are not invasive.

The Sacred Bamboo does well on most soils, but if given a preference, well drained, light soil would be best. Although it will tolerate full sun, if possible choose a lightly shaded position. It can be grown at the front of shrub borders or mixed with herbaceous perennials.

Although I have never tried growing one in a tub, I would think that this plant would be ideal for growing in a container and would make an attractive feature on the patio. Height and spread is around a metre (3 feet).

Keep The Borders Blooming

Gardens in September can soon

become uninteresting with lack of colourful flowers. I always tryto keep the border blooming for as long as possible.

Here are some suggestions to give your borders colour from now until November.

Asters are one of my favourite late flowering perennials. There are large medium and low growing varieties and colours range from blue, pink and white.

A shrub worth growing for flowering now until Autumn is the beautiful Ceanothus ‘Autumnal Blue’. Masses of dark blue flowers make a wonderful

splash of colour. to keep the border bloomin for as long as possible.

If you are looking for a striking display of flowers try growing ‘Leycesteria Aurea’. Lovely golden leaves and white flowers surrounded by purple red bracts’. A Hardy shrub

reaching 3m x 3m.

Plant Hyacinth bulbs for forcing indoors using a compost especially prepared for this purpose. Keep the bulbs in a cool dark place for 8 weeks then bring them into a light warm room where they should flower 3 to 4 weeks later. In the vegetable garden plant winter lettuce and spring cabbage.

This is the ideal time for taking cuttings of evergreen shrubs to produce new plants for next year.Aerate lawns with a fork, or hire a mechanical aereator for larger lawns.

Finally plant some heathers for flowering early next year. The winter flowering types are best for our local alkaline soil. These excellent plants give ground cover

and the flowers are enjoyed by the early foraging bees.

Jobs for September

TRAVEL STOP is an established independent travel agency specialising in cruises, Europe, long haul and tailor-made holidays worldwide. The team has over 200 years experience between them and has travelled to over 100 countries, covering all corners of the globe.

Established in 1991 and fully bonded, your money is safe. Travel Stop is a member of ABTA, IATA, AITO, ACE and ATOL. We are fully committed to delivering quality and value, striving to provide exceptional customer service and we consider that we ‘go the extra mile’.

With offices in Claydon, near Ipswich and Elmswell, near Bury St.Edmunds, we are in convenient locations with free parking. Our Claydon office has a luxurious Travel Lounge and a dedicated Cruise Room.

Our team travels frequently on both familiarisation trips and personal holidays, usually to destinations a little way off the usual tourist trail or completely off the beaten track.

I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to visit 3 of the most beautiful Italian cities. Siena, a fabulous Tuscan town, is a mediaeval oasis steeped in history, art and tradition. The ’Palio’ horse races held in the wonderful Piazza del Campo creates an electric atmosphere in July and August, whilst the vineyards of Chianti, the tower of Pisa and the walled city of Lucca are all close by to visit.

Florence, the city of Michaelangelo, Da Vinci, Giotto, Dante and their patrons, the Medici family, is home to museums, palaces, and churches housing some of the greatest artistic treasures in the world.

The most popular and important sites in Florence include the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Uffizi, the Bargello & the Accademia. Wander some of the oldest streets in the city until you reach the Arno River, cross the Ponte Vecchio and experience the ‘newest’ area of Florence, the Oltrarno.

“An Italian Trilogy” (Siena, Florence and Rome) by Cheryl Locke

Rome is an unforgettable city, rich with relics of 2,000 years of history and, after the face-lift it received for the 2000 celebrations, this wonderful city is looking better than ever. I would recommend a guided city tour to ensure that the Colosseum, Circus Maximus, Piazza Venezia and St.Paul’s Basilica are all visited, along with the invaluable information gained from the very experienced

guides.

With it taking just a couple of hours to get there and daily services from London Stansted, travelling to Italy is both easy and convenient.

n 1994, Trevor Durant, Managing Director of TPD, identified a niche in the market place to create a company that would supply control products from stock, backed up with technically qualified staff.

At TPD, they pride themselves in being green and helping the environment as much as they can. Energy efficient lighting is at the forefront of today’s eco-conscious issues. Did you know that the energy consumed by lighting in an average UK household takes up 35% of the yearly electricity bill? Traditional GLS tungsten light bulbs produce 8000 times more greenhouse gases than that of the newest energy efficient lamps and therefore, were banned in the UK in 2010.

Fluorescents and LED’s have greatly advanced in technology and have become an extremely popular light source. This is mainly due to low energy consumption and the soft, warm light they can create.

Benefits of Live-In CareThere may be certain points in our lives where we need care. We need the support of somebody to carry on living our life. The usual assumption is made that when someone’s care needs reach a certain, critical point, the only course of action is to move into a residential home. But, as increasing numbers of people discover, this is not the case. A much more personal and less disruptive solution is available. A live-in home carer provides all the care needs, whilst enabling you to remain active and independent in your own home.

The emotional importance of staying in your own home cannot be underestimated. It not only the place with which you are most familiar, but it is the setting of your life, stored with memories and treasured belongings that you do not want to give up. Live-in care works around and with you in your home, so that you can stay independent with the lifestyle and routines that you are used to. This in itself can be beneficial to people living with dementia, for example, who can gain from this continuity.

Special Feature

Living with your carer will give them athorough knowledge and understanding of you, so they can provide just the right kind of support, where it is needed and how you want it. Being in your own home, you are in complete control as to how you want your care delivered. Your rules and requirements are the first priority, rather than the regulations of the care home.

With the support of your carer, you can stay active and involved in your local community and concentrate on family and friends, with all the benefits to health and well-being this brings. Relieving you of day-to-day chores allows you to focus your energies on the more

important things in life, pursuing activities and interests you enjoy. A live-in carer also offers companionship and the security of someone living with you. But, they can also equally ensure the support to keep you and your loved one together.

A live-in carer from Purely Care offers a complete package that means it can be more holistic in its approach, giving you continuity of care and having someone who is available to nip any emerging problems in the bud. Unlike some agencies who only introduce carers, Purely Care employ their carers, freeing you from the burden of having to organise this yourself and guaranteeing that there is back up support and replacements for

holidays and sickness.

Taking the all-inclusive route can also be prudent financially. Purely Care offer a flat weekly rate, which offers a significant saving compared to organising hourly care. This allows you to relax in the knowledge that there are not any time constraints on fulfilling your requirements. Often, one carer can provide support for a couple, who both have care requirements, thus saving the need for two places in a home. Purely Care can often cover both people in one package, giving you a considerable saving.

The costs of live-in care can be covered either privately or, depending on circumstances, through local authority or NHS funding. To plan ahead for your care needs, the Society of Later Life Advisers (SOLLA), a not-for-profit organisation, links people needing care funding advice with specialist independent financial advisers, who have achieved the Later Life Adviser Accreditation.

Live-in care allows you to stay in your home and maintain your own lifestyle, whilst accessing all the personal support you need. For more information on how Purely Care can help with your care needs, please call us on 01603 407707 or visit our website at www.purelycare.co.uk.

and the isolated nature of homes, has made them an easy target for the more unsavoury members of society.

According to a recent survey by rural insurance company, NFU Mutual, domestic oil is now the third most common item stolen from the countryside, sitting behind tools and quad bikes, up from sixth in a similar survey just 12 months previously.

The aptly named ‘Oil Defender’ is a wireless system that informs customers immediately of any loss of oil. The alarm is designed to easily link to intruder alarms which means that your valuable heating oil can now be protected by your house alarm.

Richard Grimes and Steve King are the two directors of a company which sells fuel alarms.

The Company, known as Fuel Alarms Ltd. is based near Bury St. Edmunds.

They have been selling alarms to businesses for just over a year and are now also looking at selling to the domestic market.

The price of fuel has risen by 70% in recent months and criminals are using increasingly sophisticated tactics to target isolated homes to steal their supply of oil from domestic tanks.

More than 1.5m homes across the UK, mostly in rural areas, are dependent on heating oil; coupled with the increase in oil prices

Dear Simon,

What is the best way to make a smokey barbecue marinade that I can use on theBBQ?

Kind Regards

Luke

Marinating your food is the easiest way to make the meat taste great, it tenderises the meat which all adds up to a great barbeque flavour. This recipe works well with Pork, Beef or Chicken.

Good Luck! Simon

METHOD

In a mixing bowl, combine the oil, soy sauce, vinegar, lemon juice, Worcestershire Sauce, ground black pepper, mustard, onion, and garlic and mix together thoroughly. Place the marinated meat in the fridge for about 1 hour before use.

Pathfinder - Networking

Article written by Giles O’Halloran - HR Professional

There are many clichés that we can apply to the subject of networking, and here are just a few• People buy people• It’s not what you know, it’s who you know• The old school tie• I know a man who can• Etc.However much we may joke about these clichés they still ring true and this article seeks to use some of these clichés to help you understand the importance of effective networking …

People buy people:

This is a common phrase used by recruitment consultants. Business is essentially about the connections we create through developing relationships with other professionals. These relationships allow us to share knowledge, create opportunities and develop trust between stakeholders. These three elements are critical to an effective business network. It is very much about developing relationships with people in the know, identifying who can help facilitate or create the opportunities that can take you forward, and whether people can and will trust you professionally. Trust is very important, as it means they believe you are credible enough that others will support you or offer assistance based on the trust of others. You therefore need to invest time and effort into a professional network as not only will it generate opportunities and business, but it will help you be recognised as a trusted professional.

It’s not what you know it’s who you know:

This is yet another common cliché but one that is so true. Whether you are looking for your next job or perhaps a new client to approach, nothing is more powerful or influential than your network. Developing and maintaining an effective network can help give you the edge over the competition. It is not simply about your close connections, but who is connected to whom further along the network. The people you know will know people, and they will know people ….and so it goes on. That is why a network can be a powerful tool, as although your immediate contacts may not be able to help directly, they may have contacts (or their contacts may have contacts) that can help or influence on your behalf. The above may sound a little far-fetched, but did you know that circa 60% of job vacancies are filled not by friends, but by the friends of friends? – that’s how effective a well maintained network can be if you want to succeed in securing your right next job move. Not only can a network help you find that right job, but professionally, people who trust you in the network will endorse you or introduce you to others. This then increases your reach and

level of credibility when seeking out new business opportunities.

The old school tie – the old boy network – I know a man who can:

We still use the above classic expressions in the way we describe what has always existed in human culture- professional and personal networks. Networking is nothing new, it just has a new label that fits with our modern way of communicating – via telephones and computers. The Russians call it “Blat,” The Middle Eastern cultures refer to it as “Wasta,” and the Chinese have used “Guanxi” to describe networking for centuries. You should not be phased by jargon and the new ways of doing things. You can run a network just as easily from a small pocket book as you can from having an active web profile on one of the major social media sites. It is about what works for you and how best you use the tools that you prefer or have to hand. However it is worth taking time to sit and think about who you have met through your life to date and who could help you. Old school or university alumni networks, regimental associations or other professional associations are just a few channels that could be used to help you either find the right next job or enhance your business profile. There is always someone somewhere in the network that can help to some extent.

Knowledge – Influence – Motivation:

After thinking long and hard about how to simplify making your network effective, I came up with the following acronym to help – KIM – which stands for:• K = Knowledge – making sure you keep in touch with or connect with people in the know, those who might have specialist knowledge or the access to those who do.• I = Influence – ensure people in your network are able to influence others directly or indirectly via their personal contacts.• M =Motivation – the more active and motivated you can keep your network, the more productive and helpful it can be. The same can be said for those you connect with or network with – ensure they are equally motivatedThis isn’t the be all and end all of how you should qualify the effectiveness of your network, but this at least allows you to consider and plot opportunities when developing business professional relationships – what or who do they know that could help? Who can they influence directly or indirectly on your behalf? And how motivated are they to help? Keep these simple steps in mind and it will help make your network more productive.

Social Media:

Finally, it is worth me adding some comments about social media as a tool for managing networks. As with all tools, they are only as good as the user and how you use it. If you are looking to manage your professional network using social media, think about the tool you intend to use, and the functionality of the tool – does it meet your needs and is it appropriate. Linkedin is the most favoured by most UK (as well as global) professionals and is relatively simple to use. However, it is important to keep on top of your profile, updates and messages so that you maintain the integrity and currency of your network. Time invested in social media for the right reasons can pay real dividends both in the short to longer term.
