Rules, Regulations, and Scoring Rubrics Updated: October 25, 2017

• Discuss social responsibility and sustainability Competition Format There are two rounds to the Case Competition.

Round One: Round One of the Case Competition will consist of submitting a Business Plan Executive Summary and a video highlighting the selected goal. The Business Plan Executive Summary shall consist of the following information:

C. The Target Market and Projections D. The Competitive Advantages E. The Economics, Profitability and Harvest Potential F. The Team G. The Offering

The video shall consist of the following information:

Description of the Business Concept and the Business A. What business activity will the venture undertake? B. Why now? C. What is unique about this venture?

Each Business Plan Executive Summary and video will be vetted by a panel of experts. Up to four (4) teams will advance to present onsite at each PBLI location. To submit the business plan executive summary and video use this form. (Due: December 1) Round Two: For those selected to advance Round two consists of those teams which have been selected to advance to compete onsite at their respective PBLI. The onsite presentation will be a part of the opening program held on Friday evening. Each team will be provided a 30-minute consultation with an entrepreneur. During this time, each team may ask questions related to their executive summary, how to move forward, and/or request to hear advice about their project. All Business Plan Executive Summaries and videos for the teams moving forward in the competition will be provided to the onsite judges to review in advance of the competition. The onsite presentation shall consist of the following: Each team will be assigned a presentation time during PBLI. Each team will have 20 minutes for their presentation. Each team must fit the following into their 20-minute time block:

• Set-up

• Presentation of the Business Plan, model, or other visual aids

• Respond to questions from the judging panel

• Make a case to audience members why they should join your team (if necessary)

• Clean-up If your presentation includes PowerPoint slides, you will be required to submit them prior to the presentation onsite and must be PC compatible. All fonts and videos should be embedded into your presentation. Your presentation should detail the major points of the business plan in a persuasive and professional manner. If applicable, a working model or prototype may be used, but is not required. A laptop and LCD projector will be provided and presentations must be saved to PC compatible USB Flash Drive. Presentation judging criteria is listed below. The presentation score will be derived from both rounds of the competition.

To submit the final Business Plan, use this form. (Due: January 19)

Reports and Presentations Written reports and presentations must be the original work of the team members.

On-Site Check-In The team contact must check-in with the Alpha Kappa Psi registration staff upon arrival at the respective Principled Business Leadership Institute. Teams failing to check-in will be removed from the competition schedule and the chapter account will be charged the no-show fee. Teams will receive their competition time prior to their arrival at PBLI. Teams will load their visual presentation on an AKPsi-provided laptop upon check-in. Again, please ensure PowerPoint is created in a PC acceptable format.

Business Plan

Round One The Business Plan Executive Summary is limited to four (4) typed pages, sized 8 ½” X 11”, and a may include a cover page. Round Two Each team will be provided a 30-minute consultation with an entrepreneur. During this time, each team may ask questions related to their executive summary, how to move forward, and/or request to hear advice about their project. The Business Plan is limited to ten (10) typed pages, sized 8 ½” X 11”, and a may include a cover page. Teams should upload the finalized written report via the online form on or before the January 19, 2018 deadline. Finalized reports will be shared with the judges prior to the on-site competition. Judges will be provided a hard-copy of the report on-site.

Audio Visual A PC laptop and PC-compatible projector will be provided. Teams will pre-load their visual presentation on a laptop during check-in. Internet will not be available in the competition room and may not be used.

Assessment and Evaluation Criteria Round One – Business Plan Executive Summary and Video (up to 3 points each)

Teams will be judged based on a 6-point scale using the following criteria:

• Executive summary does not present a clear description of the business concept; is missing substantive strategy regarding goal support or cannot be understood; video is choppy and audio is faint (0 points)

• Executive summary provides a satisfactory description of the business concept; summary is missing a few minor points, such as target market and goal support, but meets expectations; video conveys the message, but lacks energy to grab the attention of a viewer (2 points)

• Executive summary is clear, concise, and effective; summary provides a thorough description of the business concept and business, and fully outlines and describes main points; video is clean, audio is well understood; video has potential to go viral (3 points)

Round Two – Complete Business Plan

Teams will be judged based on a 94-point scale using the following criteria: Presentation (14 points) The onsite presentation is well organized with a logical flow of information. The team’s presentation contained elements which are reflective of the selected goal, the analysis and the product or service. Each member was a part of the delivery showing team work and appropriate transition from one team member to the next. Team members are prepared and voice, tone, and use of diction is exceptional. The visual presentation is effective and allows a story to be told. Business Description (10 points) Presents the business idea thoroughly and effectively, including the industry, the company and the concept, mission, objectives, and overall strategic direction; fully outlines the reasons for launching the venture, and describes product/service offered, and business model; clearly provides a compellingly distinctive value proposition Industry Analysis (10 points) Provides a thorough analysis of potential publics, industry/market size and trends, opportunities and threats in the industry, and major competitors; specifically identifies target market and consumer demographics, and fully describes niche in which the company will operate; clearly presents significant competitive advantages Marketing Plan (10 points) Clearly outlines and describes the overall marketing strategy for the proposed business; provides details regarding pricing, sales tactics, advertising and promotion, distribution, and web/social media presence; provides a comprehensive and detailed budget for marketing plan Operational Plan (10 points) Effectively outlines and develops an operational plan for the proposed business; the plan clearly identifies needs relating to human resources, facilities, and technology infrastructure; fully describes plan for logistics Financial Plan (10 points) Presents an accurate, realistic, and achievable financial plan for the proposed business; the plan includes reasonable and fully supported sales forecasts and income projections, pro-forma financial statements, a break-even analysis, and a capital budget; the plan clearly identifies and effectively justifies possible sources of financing

For the purpose of program-level assessment, several learning outcomes have been identified. Participants are expected have achieved these upon completion of the program. Each learning outcome is worth 5 points.

Social issue: Participants will be able to recognize and describe a social issue and its impact on

business. Business plan demonstrates in-depth knowledge of social dimensions of business; effectively identifies and describes the relevant global factors and elements in the business plan; provides a thorough description of the relevant economic, cultural, financial, political, legal, ethical,

Analytical and Critical-Thinking Skills: Participants will be able to demonstrate analytical and

critical-thinking skills in the context of organizational decision making. Accurately and appropriately analyzes and interprets relevant information pertaining to each business plan component area; effectively applies appropriate procedures, formulas, and/or principles in developing and justifying multiple solutions, alternatives, or strategies in the business plan component areas; solutions, alternatives, or strategies are clear, coherent, well supported, logically consistent, and complete

Construct a path for approaching difficult situations: Participants will be able to integrate

theory and practice in the business plan component areas via an analysis of organizational problems and challenges. Demonstrates well-developed ability to integrate and apply principles, theories, and practices in the functional areas of business; effectively examines and analyzes important cross-functional organizational issues central to the development of the business plan component areas; critically evaluates and assesses key organizational problems and challenges, and clearly justifies strategic recommendations and conclusions for action based on strong analytics and appropriate principles in the business

Written Communication Skills: Participants will be able to construct coherent written forms of

communication. Effective organization and development contribute to full comprehension of written business plan; readability is enhanced by proficiency in language use, excellent mechanics, and uses language conventions effectively (e.g., spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, paragraphing, grammar, etc.)

Oral Communication Skills: Participants will be able to compose and present effective oral

forms of communication. Business plan is presented in a logical, interesting, and effective sequence, which the audience can easily follow; presentation uses effective graphics to explain and reinforce the information presented; presenter maintains eye contact with audience, seldom returning to notes; presenter speaks in a clear voice and uses correct, precise pronunciation of terms; presentation is thorough, clear, compelling, informative, and professionally delivered; presenter is professional, confident, comfortable, and answers questions effectively Social Responsibility and Sustainability: Participants will be able to identify and explain the

interrelationships between business and its social and natural environments and to apply them in a managerial context. Evidences a well-developed ability to recognize, clarify, and analyze the connections between business and its social and natural environments; clearly and thoroughly explains the ways in which these connections can be operationalized for the purpose of effective organizational management; demonstrates an advanced ability to incorporate socially-responsible and sustainable business practices in the development of organizational strategy; effectively applies these abilities to the development of the business plan component areas

Judge Feedback Each team will receive feedback regarding their analysis and presentation. The team lead will receive the team feedback via email after the PBLI.

Scholarships Each team participating will be recognized during the closing program.

The overall winning team will be presented with a seed money grant in the amount of $2500 from the Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation’s William E. Donnelly Scholarship Fund to further the development of the business plan idea, product, resource, or service. The Alpha Kappa Psi Foundation reserves the right to limit the number of grants. Case judges may also choose to recognize additional teams at their discretion.
