WSA ranked Number 7 player thrives on competition as she rises to the top

Ashaway, RI -- Ashaway Racket Strings has announced the addition of New Zealand's rising squash star Joelle King to their roster of sponsored players. Currently ranked Number 7 on the Women's Squash Association World Tour, Joelle is seen as a rising force on the squash circuit, having reached WSA Number 5 in November 2012 after winning the Macau Open, her 6th WSA title. Especially in tournaments or when you are rushed, you could forget to lower or raise the tension on the crosses. To avoid this, when starting the mains, clip or attach something to the first cross to remind you (photo 1). You can tape on something like this Dampener or just put a piece of tape over the hole. This is important if you are stringing multiple racquets so all have the same tension on the crosses. Even if you go back and take the tension off and restring at the correct tension the string bed will be tighter.

Some of the frames have knot holes a long distance from the last string. The longer the distance outside the frame, the more tension is lost. To avoid this, you can sometimes change the pattern by stringing the last string then going back and stringing the second to last string last. (photo 2, 3, 4)

Getting a tight knot without loosing tension is difficult, especially with a thick polyester string. If you pull the string through the hole with a starting clamp before you tie the knot, it puts a bend in the string so it lies against the frame better (photo 5, 6, 7 ).

Babolat dominates racquet sales in the USA Specialty Stores with four of the top five places. They also have three of the top five places in the Hot New Racquets introduced in the last 12 months.

Prince still holds the number one spot in the USA Specialty Stores sales for Shoes with the T22 and Strings with Prince Synthetic Gut Duraflex. Babolat RPM Blast moved up to second place in strings and the number one monofilament before Luxilon Alu Power in fifth place.

Esther Vergeer, the number one wheelchair player for years has retired at 31. She has an incredable record, with her last loss in 2003. Esther only lost 18 sets between January 2003 and her retirement with one third of the sets won at 6-0.

This is simular to stringing a badminton racquet at high tension. As a badminton frame is very light and fragile, this method allows it to be strung at high tensions without breaking or bending the frame.

We have found this method very good for Babolat Pure Drive and Aero Pro Drive frames. When you take the racket out of the machine, it should come out easily and be the same shape and size as when it was put in.When the racquet finishes at the top and is four knots, you can string the same way, from the bottom up. With two knots finishing at the top you string from the forth string down to the bottom forth string, then you can finish the top three and bottom three.

Next issue we will show the box method used by most stringers on the tour.

In the GOSEN Method there are no around the world techniques. Everything is strung from where the main strings end. The biggest difference is when the strings finish at the bottom of the racquet head and you string with two knots, which we will explain in this article.

TECHNIQUE

In photo 1, the racquet mains are strung normally, installing all 16 mains and clamp off the short side. We will skip 2 holes going up after the last main to start the crosses. On this racquet it will be the forth main. On the short side you have to add enough string for the bottom three crosses.

In photo 2, after you have clamped off the short side, then string the crosses from the forth up.

In photo 3, String the crosses up to the top of the frame. You can either finish or clamp off on the forth or fifth cross string at the top. Then you can finish off the rest of the crosses at the bottom and top.

ERSA Certified Stringer Workshop and Testing took place in Athens, Greece on March 9-10. Six members took part in the weekend program conducted by Mark Maslowski and George Pahiakos. George, our Greece Business Manager has passed his Pro Tour Stringer Level 1 test on the weekend and is now our new tester in Greece, along with Master Pro Tour Stringer Petros Biris.

Marco Rossani, our manager and tester in Italy is keeping busy and completed another Basic Workshop on March 10, 2013 in Milano.

Marco Rossani has organized for Mark Maslowski, ERSA Director to be in Milano, Italy offering Pro Tour Stringer Certification Level 1 and Level 2 on July 6-8, 2013. Anyone interested should contact Mark at mmaslo3330@aol.com or Marco Rossani at marco.rossani@ersa-stringers.it . Anyone with their Master Racquet Technician certification is eligable for Pro Tour Stringer Level 1 testing. If you have minimum five years pro tour experience with a resume and recommendations you can take the Level 2 certification.

Mark Maslowski will be conducting a workshop and certification testing in Skokje, Macedonia on April 3 – 7, 2013. Member and Master Racquet Technician, Igor Sokolovski has organized the weekend.
