  • LTE/LTE-Advanced Mobile broadband for the next decadeLong term evolution (LTE) is turning UMTS into a high-perfor-mance, cellular broadband system for the future that will ensure subscribers fast and smooth access to the mobile Internet. Now that LTE is commercially available, work has begun on LTE-Advanced, the next evolutionary step, in order to meet future requirements.

    An essential feature of LTE is the flexible bandwidth alloca-tion up to 20 MHz. New access methods on the air inter-face provide maximum spectral efficiency. The LTE down-link is based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). The LTE uplink implements single car-rier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA), which can be considered a precoded OFDM technique. Efficient multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna technology ensures the high data rates required for LTE. The protocol architecture of LTE has also been optimized for fast packet-oriented operation.
