Near the end of 2008, GEdiscontinued production of their lightsockets to fit the Pelton & Crane LFI,LFII and LFIII dental lights (RPI Part #’sPCS605 and PCS607) so we wereforced to purchase similar socketsfrom Sylvania.

We were always very pleased with thequality of the GE sockets, but wereconfident in the quality of the Sylvaniasockets as well, as the OEM andothers in the industry had been usingthe Sylvania sockets for some time.

Then earlier this year, we started toreceive some complaints about theSylvania sockets. The complaintscentered on the wire breaking off thecontact of the Light Socket. This inturn immediately prompted an RPIQuality Control investigation into thecause of these light socket failures.

A close analysis at the point of failure(ie. the wire entry into the terminal)clearly revealed that at the time of theterminal being crimped, the wire wasalso being crimped, causing 3-4strands of wire to be cut next to theterminal.

Hi. My name is Marion Hoffman.

I started at RPI in September of 2007.I currently work in the Warehousedepartment and enjoy my job verymuch.

I was born in Germany in a small townnamed Schwann which is locatedsouth-west of Frankfurt. My familymoved to the United States when I wasfour years old and settled in Michiganfor six years. We then moved to CulverCity, California. I graduated fromCulver High School.

After high school, I moved to the SanFernando Valley and worked for acompany for several years. The com-pany moved to Moorpark, Californiain 1998 and I moved too. We fell inlove with the city and bought a homethere. We enjoy hiking the rolling hillsof Ventura County with our dog Sam.In 2007, when the company moved toArizona, I stayed and I was hired byRPI.

Every year we take our vacation at BigBear Lake which is located east of LosAngeles and takes about two to threehours to getto from ourhome.

At the lakewe usuallyrent a cabin,go fishingand hiking.We alsoenjoy kick-ing backand relax-ing on the lake aboard our boat withSam who likes to bark at the wildlifeevery once in while.

I enjoy spending time with my familyand friends on the weekends and holi-days. I also like a challenging game ofgolf.

I hope to spend many years growingwith RPI.

THE RPI FAMILY

It was quite an eventful year at RPI, and, for many of you, I expect your 2010 wasquite a year as well. I know that for many, 2010 was not an easy year, as the econ-omy continued to remain slow. Many of you that I spoke with near the end of theyear commented that it seemed like business was picking up, and I hope that trendcontinues for everyone.

As I look back, it’s amazing what RPI experienced and accomplished. We startedthe year with a bang, introducing more new parts at the same time than we ever hadin the past – over 200 new parts! These included parts to fit Midmark, SciCan,Tuttnauer sterilizers, Stryker cast cutters, Getinge/Castle bulk sterilizers, Midmarkexam tables and chairs, and a variety of dental compressors. Plus, we took on thedistribution of the OEM parts for the Prestige/KavoClave line of sterilizers.

We followed up all of that with our third sterilizer calibration kit, this one for theTuttnauer E series sterilizers, and then introduced more parts to fit the Steris/Amscoline of Century sterilizers. We complimented our line of patient cables and lead-wires with a few more cables and leadwire sets, along with disposable leadwire setsas well as sets designed for use in veterinary applications. We added more parts tofit Pelton & Crane dental chairs, and recently more for the A-dec line of dentalchairs. And, we finally completed our offering of PM kits for table top sterilizers,including kits for the entire line of Tuttnauer table top sterilizers.

This January, we will add even more to that line of parts, as well as more to fit theold reliable Pelton & Crane Magnaclave sterilizer. And, in between all of that, westarted a PC Board Refurbishing Program for boards to fit Midmark M9 & M11Ultraclave sterilizers.

This was also the year of the audit at RPI. We started the year with our triennialISO9000 certification audit, and then in June we were inspected by the State ofCalifornia Department of Public Health, and in September, the FDA conducted aninspection of RPI. We passed all three audits with flying colors – no non-confor-mances or even observations. The FDA and the state inspect RPI because of theitems that we sell that require FDA 510k clearance: the skin temperature probes,heating elements, and phototherapy bulbs for infant warmers and incubators, andour line of patient cables and leadwires.

We also expanded our facilities, taking the third and final unit in our building, goingfrom 13,000 square feet to over 20,000. Amazingly, we’ve actually been in this samebuilding for most of the past 36 years, and the space that we originally occupied in1974 is now our lunchroom!

This expansion was important, allowing us to expand our laboratory and engineer-

Looking Back at 2010!

So in the crazy world of part numbersassociate with patient cables, RPI hasmade it easy to find the the cables youneed. Just follow these 3 steps.

1) Start at www.rpiparts.com. Search bythe make and model of the monitor forwhich you need a cable.

2) Once you’ve found the appropriatecables then look at the individual listingsfor each cable that fits your monitor: a)the number of leadwires such as 3, 5, 7or 10; b) the style of the lead wires suchas shielded or unshielded; and, c) thecolor system used for the cable(American or international). Theindividual listing will also indicatewhether the lead wires are permanentlyattached or are sold separately.

3) If your search has lead to a cable thattakes replaceable leadwires you haveone more decision to make – Do youwant lead wires with snap connectionsor pinch connections at the patient end.The choice of connections at the patientend could be based on end userpreferences, the types of electrodesused and the department using themonitor.

It’s just that simple to find what you needon the RPI website.

Receiving Inspection. The failure willoccur during normal operating conditions,after repeated heating and cooling cycles.This problem did not occur on allinventory, but enough to catch ourattention.

The Quality Control Manager and QualityEngineer at the manufacturer werecontacted and defective samples sent fortheir evaluation. Their investigationconfirmed our finding of the failure andthey soon discovered the root cause ofthe failures, a combination of problemsthat were easily fixed.

First, the operator hand-held the socketduring the crimping operation, causing anuneven contact between the terminal andthe crimping tool. This was remedied bymaking a fixture to hold the socket in awell and mounting the crimping tool inclose contact with the terminal. This set-up allowed the crimping tool to be held ata constant 90 degree to the terminal,eliminating the operator error.

Second, it was determined that too muchof the wire insulation was being removedprior to crimping allowing a portion ofbare wire between the insulation and theterminal. This exposed the wire topotential damage during the crimpingoperation. This problem was corrected byadjusting the stripping of the insulation sothat no bare wire was exposed during thecrimping operation.

All operators were retrained in these newprocedures and a Quality Inspector willinspect and verify a sample of all crimpsprior to daily production runs. Both themanufacturer and RPI feel that thiscorrective action should go a long way toenhancing the quality and reliability ofboth of these parts and greatly reducingfailures in the field.

M9/11 PC BoardsWhat to Check

First off, thank you for participating inour Refurbishing Program for the PCboards that fit the Midmark M9/M11.The program continues to be a greatsuccess! So keep sending us yourboards so we can keep the PC BoardExchange program going strong foryou.

Second, there are just a couple of thingsyou need to check before and/or whenyou replace a PC board.

1) Check the Pulse Solenoid Ohms. If theOhms are much lower than ~14.6 on theM9 (Blue coil) or ~11.6 Ohms on theM11 (Black coil) then the Pulse Solenoidis bad and will damage the PC Board.

2) Check for a bad ground connection atthe PC Board or a missing/loose screwthat is used to mount the PC Board to themounting plate. Either of theseconditions can cause the fill solenoidvalve to continually fill the chamber withwater thus staying in the fill mode andnot going into the sterilize mode.

3) Check the Water Level Sensor. A badWater Level Sensor will do the samething as a bad ground connection. Keepin mind that if the sensor is not tight, theinsulated inserts can take on water andfail to insulate thus causing the PC Boardto “think” that the chamber is full ofwater. In this case, the sterilizer willoverheat resulting in a 001 Error Code.

4) Check the Heater Elements. The M9and M11 heater elements should read~10 Ohms. And from ground to one tabof the heater should read OPEN. If theheater is shorted, it will cause damage tothe PC Board.

Let me continue with our firsts. I really should call theminteresting and unusual rather than firsts. Sherry and I tookmany of our vacations in our RV. That gave us an opportuni-ty that we would not have had, to visit a few of our customers.All of the visits were wonderful. They gave us a touchy feelysense of our industry that is hard to get in a catalog type busi-ness. But a few of the visits were different, and especiallyinteresting.

Sherry and I were taking a trailer trip which would take usthrough a part of the Rockies and had a customer we wantedto see. I called a few weeks in advance. We had a pleasantconversation and then I asked him if we could meet for break-fast. His response was “do you walk or paddle”. Needless tosay, I had no idea what he had just asked me. I asked himagain for breakfast and he simply repeated his question. I thenasked him what his question meant. He told me he was ahiker and a river rafter. Which did Sherry and I want to dowith him? I chose river rafting since I could at least sit down.We had never been serious hikers and this guy sounded seri-ous. Although Sherry and I had done river floating but neverriver rafting it sounded riskier but not as strenuous.

Our new friend picked a 3.5 river. Wow! What a way to start.(By the way, rivers for rafting are judged on a scale of 1 to 5with 5 being the most turbulent). We met our friend/customerat the appropriate time and place. We had been a little nervousthe night before thinking about this, but we really got nervouswhen they had us get into wet suits and crash helmets. Wedidn’t see anyway out, so we got into our raft and grabbedvery tight grips on the ropes. It turned out to be exhilaratingand wonderful. It was also somewhat scary, but we didn’t fallinto the river. When the trip ended, Sherry got out of the raftand asked when we could do this again. I didn’t know thenthat we would do it again many years later with our entirefamily. Obviously, we didn’t talk much about business, but wehad a great time together. This made our relationship withhim much more personal.

There will be more stories from the Old Curmudgeon. Wehad a lot of fun in growing this business.

There’s an old saying, “What goes around, comes around.”That can be interpreted in many ways, but in the case of RPIit really is true.

In 1974, in the middle of one of our country’s gasolinecrunches, we moved the company from its location neardowntown Los Angeles to Chatsworth, in the San FernandoValley, to be closer to our home. We subleased a few hundredsquare feet in a new industrial building.

When we outgrew that space, we moved to a building at theother end of our two-block-long street, where we remainedfor several years, eventually taking over a second unit in thatsame building. Our next move was to a stand-alone buildingin between our first two locations, still on the same street.

After a number ofyears, it was timeto move again –this time it was amove back to theoriginal buildingdown the streetthat we had sub-leased in 1974. Weoccupied one ofthe three units ofthat building, thentook over the sec-ond unit, and thisyear, finally, tookover the third andfinal unit.

This added spacehas allowed us tomake some signif-icant changes,including a muchenlarged QC lab.The additional

Pelton & Crane Validator Plus 8 …That Annoying Little Error Code P2

New and Improved! RPI Double-Ended Spanner WrenchWith Remountable Spanner Nuts

In this day and age when computerstalk to us, cars park themselves andmachines have self diagnostics capabil-ities, you’d think troubleshooting wouldbe a breeze.

But every now and then you run into asituation where that familiar ErrorCode just isn’t enough help. Youaddress every symptom and probablecause listed in the manual and still findyourself at a loss.

Case in point – I was recently workingin the RPI lab on a Pelton-CraneValidator Plus-8 with a P2 Error Code.The machine would Fill, go into theSterilize mode and hit 241kPa atapproximately 122°C, which is 13°Cbelow the cross over point (temperaturevs pressure). This wasn’t the first time Iaddressed the P2 code with theValidators, so I thought I’d have themachine up and running in no time.

I started with the steam sensor. Uponexamining the wire connections in theconnection plug, I spotted a smallamount of corrosion around the wireand pin. Oh good, problem solved.After replacing the steam sensor, I rananother cycle. No good. P2 came upagain.

Up next for review was the bellowssolenoid. If it does not open and closeproperly, the machine will trap cold air.After removing the solenoid andinspecting the internal parts, I simply

cleaned the seat, plunger, stop blank,spring, replaced the o-ring, andreassembled the valve. I also took thetime to inspect the other solenoid valvessince the bellows valve was a bit dirty.

With everything back together, I rananother cycle. And for all my efforts, allI got was another P2. So I turned myattention to the heating aspect of themachine in question and inspected theheating element and the driver board. Icould not see any physical damage tothe heating element and leads; and theresistance values were correct. TheLED on the board reacted as it shouldduring heat up; and the Triac displayedthe proper resistance values.

At that point I decided to go back andrebuild all the solenoid valves – but tono avail. By now I can feel a few morehairs turning grey, so I asked Mark(another RPI tech support engineer) tohave a look at the machine to see what Iwas missing.

It wasn’t until day three of troubleshoot-ing that Mark noticed I had installed theSTOP BLANK on the Bellows Valve(RPI Part #PCK204) upside down. Weflipped it, reinstalled the valve kit andran our first successful cycle.

Something so simple caused me somuch grief. The lesson learned is that itdoesn’t really matter how many timesyou’ve done something – the simplestof things can be over looked.

We redesigned our Spanner Nut Wrench (RPI Part#RPT501) and the Spanner Nuts (RPI Part #’sILS014 and RPT384) to create one spectaculartool. By moving my office (and downsizingit), Dora Aguirre, our CustomerService Manager, has more space forthe customer service representatives,and our Product Development engi-neers have more space to set out theirparts, prints and other materials. Alsoadded is a new educational trainingroom with access to equipment for“hands-on” experience.

One of the biggest changes is theenlargement of the warehouse andshipping areas, to better handle all ofour new and upcoming parts.

This building should last us for sometime and then – who knows where wemay move to next. I don’t think thereis any more room on Corisco Street.But that’s really Ira’s decision. Al andI started RPI, saw it through much ofits growth and now it’s up to Ira, whoseems to be enjoying calling the shotsand bossing his parents around.

At the same time, we upgraded ourphone system. Our old one was occa-sionally giving us problems, sometimesmaking it difficult to hear the caller.

And, somewhere along the way, wefound time to release our biggest cata-log update ever, along with reformat-ting and resizing our dental catalog.We also continue to work on the lookand content of our website, and plansome nice upgrades in the near future.And, we exhibited at nine trade showsand conferences.

Last year was quite a busy year for us,but I think it’s just setting the stage foranother busy year in 2011.

We will continue to push hard on ournew product development efforts, andcontinue to look for better ways toserve you. And hopefully, we will con-tinue to grow, and help you grow andbe successful. But rest assured, we willnever forget the basics of ensuring thequality of our parts, providing excellentcustomer service, and keeping thoseparts in stock so that you can have themwhen and where you need them.
