ROYAL OAK INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL
JULY NEWSLETTER
Welcome back to term three!
We have quickly moved back into full swing and are looking forward to a full term.
As I write it is Art Week, we have come off timetable for the week and all around the school it is
wonderful to see happy, engaged kids working hard on some exceptional pieces of art. As well as
congratulating the students for their talent and hard work, I would like to thank the staff for their
creativity and skill in teaching different artistic methods, and in particular, thank Mr Puru, who is
bouncing all over the school leading, encouraging, advising and running the show. On Thursday
next week, 6th August, after school there will be an exhibition of selected works in the library.
Week 10 of the term (September 20-25) is camp week for Year 7 students and any Year 8s who
missed out in 2019. We go to Ngaruawahia for two and a half days of fun activities, learning and
growing. Students who have lost the permission letter can get another from the office. As ROI has
signed up for the government’s donations scheme we receive funding to support curriculum
including trips. This means that we ask for a donation to support the delivery of the camp, however
all eligible students can (and should!) go regardless of whether they can pay. Camp is an
outstanding experience that creates lasting memories for students.
Enrolments are proceeding well, we currently have more than double the numbers of enrolments
we had at the same time last year, and we ask that families enrolling students for 2021 please do so
as soon as possible. Out of zone enrolments close on 2 September and numbers will be very
restricted. Enrolments can be done online through the school website at
https://www.royaloakint.school.nz/our-school/enrolment/
Finally, it is important to remember that while New Zealand is currently free of community
transmission of Covid19, there is always a chance of it returning and we must remain vigilant. If you
need to come into school please remember the following:
• Stay away if you are unwell, we are happy to chat on the phone or through Skype or Zoom.
• Practice good hand hygiene. Sanitiser is supplied in every room including reception.
• The QR code for the Covid19 Tracing App is on display in reception, please use it!
Nga mihi mahana, warm regards

Travel-Wise School
Royal Oak Intermediate School is proud to be a Travel-wise school for the last two years. The aim of the
Travel Wise programme is for our students to become safer on the road and to recognise the health benefits
of walking, biking and even scooting to school.
Travel wise is an ongoing project with a set of practical actions that aims to improve road safety and
promotes sustainable school travel journeys. The school has a partnership between Auckland Transport and
Auckland Council.
The ROI Travel wise programme focuses on improving road safety knowledge and developing students'
leadership skills. As ROI travel wise members our key focus is:
To raise awareness of an issue or to inform and meet the needs of the school, parents and our community.
One of the major concerns that we are looking at for this this year is: ‘Safety when crossing the road’.
In Term 2 after we were back to school from the Covid19 Lockdown, the Year 7 students had an amazing
opportunity to be part of Grade 2 Bike Ready Cycle Skills. The students really enjoyed the sessions.
Have a look at Briar and Troy’s YouTube channel Bikeaholics
In Term 3, we are now working with our Community Transport Coordinator- John McGough and the first step
we had taken was to plan and create a Travel wise campaign. The Back to School campaign aims to raise
awareness about how vulnerable children are on roads near schools and encourage people driving cars,
motorcycles or even bikes to slow down.
We had our first successful “Back to School” campaign for 2020 on Monday 27th July. It was quite successful
and we received 70 thumbs up and toots which means people are being aware and do get the message-
“Slow Down Around Schools” During that campaign we as a team observed some issues that were taking
place on the two pedestrian crossing sites. Our observation tells us that some drivers need to choose the
right speed for the road (go slower). We had a discussion with our Community Transport coordinator and
suggested our ideas to address this specific issue. Hence, our next step is to have a “Speed Camera” test on
one of the days within a couple of weeks.
The travel wise members are also working towards involving and engaging the whole school to be part of
the programme. In our school assembly on Friday, we encouraged all of the classes to be active
participants in the different competitions which will be held in Term 3 and Term 4. This is to help students,
parents and the community to continue promoting and exercising healthy choices about travelling to and
from school.
The first competition in Term 3, is a “Brochure Competition”
The criteria for the competition is:
• Each class will need to create a Travel wise brochure promoting 3 different ways to travel to and
from school in an active or sustainable way. They might consider a range of travel options such as;
walking, cycling, scooting, skateboarding, roller blading, bus, train etc…
We look forward to your support and cooperation to make school travel safer, healthier and more fun.

STUDENT WORK
Bio Food By Rosie Taylor
Bio Food, one of the four specialisation classes at ROI, is a great experience for all students. In Bio food, we learn multiple recipes and dishes and are given feedback from our knowledgeable and experienced teacher Mrs Kumar. We engage in different projects such as project cafe and cultural/traditional family dish. During our first project, Cultural/traditional family dish, we get to choose a dish from our family or culture to cook and present to our peers in a shared morning tea. This is one of the best sessions we enjoy because to taste all different cultural/traditional/special family dishes of our mates in the class. Room 9 also created a google site in Bio Food classroom page for our different cultural/traditional/ family recipes we made in the lock down or Project 1.
Whilst during project cafe, we design our own café with a café name and our own logo that makes us proud for we now own it as our brand and name. In this project we learn about the different dietary needs and requirements of our stakeholders such as- gluten free, lactose intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, people with eczema, and religious beliefs like Muslims who eat only halal meat and no pork etc. .and then we design and create make a dish for our chosen stakeholder.
This term for our culminating task our focus was on science cooking. Hence, we did a science fair test making different flavoured cookies using different variables. It was fun and interesting and we experienced that by playing around with the different ingredients for our favourite recipe, we were able to make can it chewier, fluffy or thinner.
What was most interesting about Room 9’s experience in Bio food this year was that we spent the start of the term in lockdown due to COVID-19 restrictions. We managed this challenge by attending online zoom meetings with Mrs Kumar as well as completing weekly assignments in which we learnt about different topics such as pathogens, the essential nutrients, and the Eatwell plate etc. This was how around half of our term went before restrictions were lifted and we returned back to our usual classroom format. Even though we missed out on a few great opportunities and projects this term, we still had a great term of enriching and expanding our knowledge!

Bio Food By Bella Nunn- Room 9.
In ROI there are four specialist subjects- Music, Bio Food, Visual Arts and Design Technology. Bio Food is
run by Mrs Bernadette Kumar. Every term we have different specialisations and for Term 3, Room 9 had
Bio Food Technology. We get two sessions a week, for the specialisation classes.
Due to covid-19, the beginning of the 5 weeks in Bio Food Technology we did distant learning on
Zoom. I think this was quite different for the learning and teaching for both students and teachers. The
students had a greater experience in doing some research and exploring new ideas and being
actively engaged with the given tasks and assignments. Distant learning also gave us students an
opportunity to make our own initiatives and look at being more mature and responsible for our own
learning. Room 9 enjoyed the zoom sessions and we also got the merit award for 100% attendance
with the zoom sessions in Bio food.
In Week 6 we were back to school and it was an absolute pleasure to be in the cooking room and we
could just not wait to do the cooking. Mrs. Kumar took us through the expectations and procedures in
Bio Food Technology and then we started on with our cooking sessions. We learnt to make different
traditional recipes of some different countries such as- French Crepes, Belgium Waffles, Chinese Fried
rice etc. and made many more recipes such as bread pudding, different flavoured muffins, apple
crumble.
This term the focus was on the science concept for our culminating task, so we did some science
cooking. We had a science fair test making cookies using different variable. It was amazing to see
how the change of different ingredients had a different effect and it also had a scientific reason
behind it.
We also learnt to design and create a recipe based on the dietary needs and requirements of the
different stakeholders such as- Gluten free, Lactose intolerant, vegan, vegetarian etc.
Bio food technology is fun and it gives us a better understanding of the real-world situations such as
how to work in a kitchen, eating a healthy nutritional diet etc.

Bio-Food Technology Written by Sadhana Singh
Bio food class is full of exploration and creating some delicious recipes. In this class we learn
different techniques, cultural recipes and business within assignments.
In term 1, we learnt and made a variety of different recipes from different places around the
world, such as Crepes (France), Waffles (Belgium), Fried Rice (China) etc. We also learnt different
styles of cooking expressed in baking of Banana cake, Cookies (afghans), apple crumble etc. We
also shallow fried pancakes.
In towards the theory type of things, we learnt planning and designing menus for stakeholders
(customers) with special dietary requirements. These included Lactose Intolerant, Gluten Free,
Vegan, Vegetarian, Halal, and people with Eczema etc. The class also got to learn the three
different processes of the “Raising Agents” which are mechanical, chemical, and biological. Us
students were given the opportunity to plan and organise a cafe of our own which needed to include
a logo and name making. Mrs Kumar (Bio Food teacher) has let us experience the challenge of being
knowledgeable and to be working in a real-world situation where we need to cater for a
stakeholder (customer) with dietary needs and requirements.
As for health and safety, there are some expectations and procedures that are strictly carried
out in Bio Food, such as girls must have their hair plaited or in a bun and everyone should have
shoes that are hard covered and wear an apron when doing the cooking sessions. When sneezing or
coughing, you need to turn away from the food and then sneeze in your elbow. When you are
cooking on the stoves, we need to be careful of others. The work benches and sinks must not have
a spec of crumb on them and dishes must be carefully washed and returned back to where they
came from.
Within the term, we learnt lots of different techniques and recipes. It was an explorative subject.
All teachers have different rules and Mrs Kumar likes us to be well organised. In this class, time
management is a big factor. You do learn a lot of skills, kitchen rules, cooking techniques and styles
in Bio Food Technology.
