The final round of the 2021 GPS season against Brisbane State High School was hosted by Toowoomba Grammar School with supplementary games at St Joseph’s Nudgee College and St Joseph’s Gregory Terrace. The BSHS teams tend to be strong and physical and possess a real competitive edge. The boys fronted up for the challenge and were competitive across the board. Results included a close finish in the U15As 21-26, while the 16As finished an undefeated season with a hard-fought win 19-12. The game of the day was certainly the 1st XV win 21-19. The determination and grit shown by the team to come back from 16-19 with only minutes to go was a testament to the boys and the coaching staff.

On another note, I would like to again acknowledge our new Title Rugby Sponsor for 2021 - the University of Southern Queensland. We thank the University for their involvement throughout the year and look forward to future collaborations.

1st XV BSHS 1st XV WIN 21 - 19 Charlie Wigan This game was amazing. We were in control at 13-5 mid-way through the second half but were just unable to land the knockout blow. BSHS came back with a few long range tries to lead by 3 with 2 minutes to play. Our boys held their nerve to score a beautiful rolling maul try to win the game. Congratulations men on a well-deserved victory.

2nd XV BSHS 2nd XV

LOSS 5 - 21 Samuel Newton After a great start that had you defending very well and denying the opposition time and space, you were on the front foot. The attack had solid momentum and you had them rattled. A couple of defensive errors late in the first half suddenly had us on the back foot, which was hard to recover from score wise. At half time we spoke about continuing the hard work but playing territory. The second half saw the effort rating increase with some good tactical play pushing the opposition against their own line. Unfortunately, further lapses in concentration let them in again, increasing the pressure to score points as a means of catching up. In the end we ran out of time, despite your perseverance and effort. You have been a great team that has come together well. We have had our disappointments, but these have been far outweighed by your willingness to train hard and never give in, thank you for the great season.

3rd XV BSHS 3rd XV

WIN 21 - 5 Tom Green BSHS had some talented players who were strong in contact, and we needed to clear the ruck to stop our opponents from slowing our ball down. Once we did that and remained patient with the ball in hand, we started to dominate the game. There were great backline tries from Josh Healy and Clancy Black, as well as a strong forwards try to Mitch Mildren. Perhaps most pleasing was our goal line defence in the back end of the game where the boys worked hard for each other to deny our opponents. Congratulations on a great win in your last game, boys. It was great to watch you play so well on Old Boys' Memorial Oval.

4th XV NC 5th XV LOSS 0 - 67 Harrison Brimblecombe

Today’s score line does not reflect the effort poured onto Flat 2 by the Toowoomba boys this morning. Although we were often overpowered or too slow to capitalise at the breakdown, this match did offer scoring opportunities and for long periods we were fighting in opposition territory. Unfortunately, we were out classed by a strong counterattack and were not able to transition quickly enough into defence to keep the score line more realistic of the balance of the match up.

5th XV NC 7th XV LOSS 5 - 40 Gabriel Morse The last game of the year saw the 5th XV team travel to Nudgee College on a hot steamy morning. Our previous few games against NC teams did not look great on the scoreboard and as a team we were keen to re-write this pattern in our last game. The first half was a close battle and both teams were tough in defence. Fatigue crept in late in the first half which resulted in a number of missed tackles that lead to NC tries. The team at half time still felt they were in the game but primarily we needed to hold onto the footy. Hamish Innes scored early in the second half to give the team a chance but ultimately fatigue set in again and the NC team proved to be too strong. Across all our games the boys tried hard in defence and Gabriel Morse, Eaton Ackland and George Stains were brilliant in their defensive efforts for the team. Congratulations to all the Year 12 Open Rugby players. I hope your memories of TGS Rugby last forever and can't wait to recount some of these memories in the years to come.

16A BSHS 16A WIN 19 - 12 Richard Dean We were expecting an arm wrestle and that was exactly how the match panned out. When we played our patterns, we were unstoppable, but too often, we strayed from our plan. That said, the boys can look back on today, and indeed, their entire season with pride. They have become better players, a better team and are a great group of blokes. The coaches look forward to watching your continued success in the coming years. Players' Player votes today were dominated by two of our backs - Richard Dean and Will Holley - with Tom Schutt polling strongly for the forwards.

16B NC 16B LOSS 5 - 38 Joel Cobb A hot Brisbane day sapped the energy from the boys early in the first half. A credit to all players that they distanced themselves from some poor sportsmanship from the opposition. A better showing in the second half means the boys should hold their heads high. A good, albeit, disrupted season. Thanks for the season boys!

16C NC 16C LOSS 17 - 0 James Brisk & William Underwood

With the team 0-5 down at half time the boys looked like they could snatch a win, poor defence and confusion in attack let us down in the second half. A disappointing way to end the season but with an equal win loss ratio it has been a good season to coach this group of boys.

16D BYE

15A BSHS 15A LOSS 21 - 26 Thomas Bailey A spirited effort by the boys who competed against a very good side. A very physical encounter, with Tom Bailey doing damage with both ball and in defence. We were able to stretch BSHS when we had the ball, but just ran out of time to snatch the game.

15B BSHS 15B WIN 50 - 0 Angus Buckley It was a fast start from Brisbane State High School to begin the game, but the boys matched their intensity with fearless line speed and low chop tackles. Our defence led to our first try of the game which was followed by an Alistair Simon solo try off the proceeding kickoff. This momentum led to more tries with Will Salter, Ryan Grimes, Luke Williams and Alex Chicalas all crossing for tries in the first half. The second half got a little scrappy, but the boys were still relentless in defence and scored two late tries to finish the game. End score 50-0.

15C NC 15C LOSS 0 - 38 Oscar Innes The boys were out muscled today. They played well at times but allowed the Nudgee team to dominate for the majority of the match. The team had a couple of opportunities to score but could not complete. It has been a mixed season with interruptions, and I think this has worked against the team.

15D NC 15D Blue

LOSS 14 - 36 Cameron Graham Good start to the match with some solid game play from both teams. Competitive in the first half with a 12-7 scoreline to nudgee. The heat and fitness worked against the boys as they fatigued in the second half to go down 14-36. Tries to Frankie Loane and Baxter Tzannes and both tries converted by Xavier Lindermann.

14A BSHS 14A LOSS 12 - 31 Xavier Austin & Dom Black

The team had prepared well for their final game of the 2021 season. They knew that they would have a physical battle ahead of them against BSHS and the first couple of carries certainly did not disappoint. Hedley Donges was the first to break the line and streak away for an 80m try which was converted by Jack Brown. The boys attacked well but were just unable to get a clean break and finish. The size and pace of BSHS began to dominate and they scored three tries before the halftime break. Xavier Austin scored early in the second half and the boys were back in the game, 12-19. However, it wasn't to be, BSHS scored two more unanswered tries to win the match 12-31. James Richardson did well stepping in at scrumhalf, Gilbert Tighe kicked well, Ed Webster was solid in defence and Patrick Able didn't back down in contact. Xavier Austin and Dom Black shared the Man of the Match award. The boys should be proud of their efforts this season, they have improved out of sight and Mr Brownlie and myself look forward to following all of the boys throughout their TGS Rugby journey.

14B BSHS 14B WIN 48 - 5 George Anderson Wow what an end to the season. Boys moving up to A's, boys debuting for the B's and everyone getting on board with our team approach to the game. As a coach you experience a wide spectrum of emotions and matches; however, every now and then you get a game like Saturday's when you know there is something special ahead. From the outset the boys attacked with confidence and belief in each other, quickly executing our game plan with Fraser Coleborn scoring within the first few minutes of the game. The first half continued in this fashion with the forwards setting a great platform in which the backs could exploit space. Keegan Coventry continued with his devastating ball carrying and was well supported by Sebastian Hepner and Lachlan Warry. James Richardson distributed brilliantly and controlled the attack well as he led the forwards down the field and put the backs on the front foot. By the end of the first half the score was 25-0 with tries to Cooper Tobin, Kainen Beezley and Fraser Coleborn with two. Our goal for the second half was to play the perfect game, this meant no white line fever and hold to our structure and pattern. With some early ill-discipline BSHS jumped on the opportunity at the beginning, building some continuity and scoring. This re-lit the fire in the boys, with the team reconnecting and settling back into our great attacking patterns and structure. In no time we had put the game beyond doubt with tries to George Anderson, Harry McMillan and Cooper Tobin with two. George Anderson converted two, Mac Knudsen and Sebastian Hepner both converted one as well. End score 48-5. Congratulations to all the boys for their commitment, effort and willingness to learn this season. I hope they all had a great time.

14C NC 14C LOSS 0 - 53 Frank Reardon & Fergus Elborne

After an amazing season we unfortunately conceded a defeat for our last game. Despite losing some key players from our squad, the boys gave it a crack but were no match for the strong and skilful Nudgee team. However, it was good to see the boys having a bit of fun whilst they had the ball, and I was happy that they didn't just drop their heads. I want to commend these boys on what has been an amazing season and for them to give me a chance to come back to TGS is something I never expected to happen again. This group was great to be around and is something I am going to miss. Thanks for everything lads!

14D NC 14E LOSS 12 - 48 Will Kelly The last game of the season was a tough match against Nudgee. However, the boys impressed by showing just how much they had developed in both skills and determination. The boys never gave up despite the score line and put into play many of the set plays we had practiced over the term.

13A BSHS 13A LOSS 0 - 57 Luke Burrow The TGS 13A boys had a tough encounter against a strong BSHS side. The boys started well and pressured the opposition with a few strong phases on their line but were unable to generate points. TGS displayed fast line speed and, in the first 20 minutes, defended the best they had all season. The boys showed a willingness to defend and looked like they were enjoying it with some effective, hard-hitting tackles. At halftime, the score was 0-26 in favour of BSHS, but the boys were still showing enthusiasm and were still in it. At the beginning of the second half, the boys attacked well with great shape and patience and looked close to scoring multiple times. But credit to the BSHS defence, they were able to keep us scoreless. The final score was 0-57, but this did not reflect the game or the effort and spirit the boys played with. I'm very proud of the boys' efforts this season and am fortunate to have had the opportunity to coach such a great group of boys.

13B BSHS 13B DRAW 24 - 24 Austin Webster BSHS drove a long way today to finally give our boys a good arm-wrestle. In a nail-biting game, we ended up with a much-deserved draw with a fair opponent. Throughout the game, both teams were able to take control and show dominance, and with that set came the points. We were able to string together some great offensive plays from both the forward and back packs. Of particular note were the defensive shunt from our scrum and we were also able to execute our blind-side run off a well-contested scrum. The boys should all be proud of the vast improvement they have made this season and I am looking forward to watching them playing in the U14s.

13C NC 13D LOSS 5 - 29 Jackson Haynes In a hot day down in Brisbane we fought hard but couldn't keep up with the opposition. Well done to Cooper Healey who crossed over for our only try and a great effort From Campbell Leslie who tackled so hard in the first half he had nothing left. A special mention to Jackson Haynes who seemed to be everywhere. A good season and I hope all play rugby next year.

13D BYE

12A BSHS 12A LOSS 17 - 33 Jack Jellicoe A great defensive effort from the TGS, U12A team to hold the much larger BSHS team to only five tries. Further to that and unlike last week, the team showed a lot of heart and doggedness to take it to the BSHS in attack and scoring three times. Man of the Match went to a determined hard running Jack Jellicoe who penetrated the BSHS pack on several occasions. I wish the players the best in the future with their rugby.

12B GT 12D DRAW 29 - 29 Harry Carroll The TGS boys played an absolute nail biter against GT in the final match of the season, scores ending at 29 apiece. A clutch conversion from three try hero, Harry Carroll after the siren was enough to secure the draw. Consistency and not staying switched on has crippled the men of 12B at times throughout the season and this was again the case today. When the boys were switched on, they played some entertaining rugby often sending the ball out wide to the wings or setting up nicely in their four man pods. Huge mention today must go to Harry Carroll, James Fagan, Henry Croft and Ethan Fryer who all did plenty of outstanding things throughout the fixture. Thanks for the season boys and well done on today’s performance.

11A NC 11B WIN 12 - 7 Dougal Carroll What a way to finish off the season. The Under 11 boys stood tall today and recovered for a gutsy win. A slow start was turned around with some punishing defence and strong work over the ball.

After strong lead up work, a deft kick from Alby Galbraith behind the Nudgee defensive line allowed Jack Mowbray to scoot through, pounce and score.

After the resumption, more strong defence caused a turnover and the backs showed great touches to put Charlie Pollock over in the corner.

Hard work up front and wingers scoring tries in the corner is a coach’s dream.

Nudgee threw everything at the boys, including a number of player reinforcements, to try to get the win, but the defensive effort of TGS was superb.

A magnificent win.

11B NC 11 Gold LOSS 12 - 31 Benjamin Gentry Although we didn’t come away with a win to finish the season, all eighteen 11B players can be extremely proud of their efforts and improvements this season. Today, we played well in patches, however, our ball control (at the ruck and in general play) let us down at times. We aimed up much better in the second half and played some entertaining rugby. We thank Nudgee College for the game and for inviting us over for post-match drinks and snacks, wonderful sportsmanship. Once again, awesome season boys. I look forward to watching your TGS rugby journeys in the years to come.
