Dear Friends of ROTOM, Just a few weeks ago we returned from Uganda with our Journey for CHANGE (JFC) team. I have asked team members to share their experience with you. Enjoy! We are grateful for your support of our team and our beloved seniors and colleagues in Uganda! We changed and were challenged to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. Blessings, The Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8 (NLT) Visiting Seniors The JFC team visited senior homes in two locations, Kabale and Mukono. The needs of the seniors tend to be similar. The burden of raising grandchildren, looking for food and decent housing are universal to the seniors ROTOM serves. It is the highlight of the year for a grandma or grandpa to be visited by their sponsor or team members. What joy! Dave Meyer is ministering to special needs kids on his school bus route in CO Staff Training Members of the team had the opportunity to present two staff trainings at each ROTOM office. The first, “cross cultural training” offered the staff and team time to bond and laugh. We role played characteristics of ‘Hot and Cold Cultures’. This training not only helped all of us to appreciate differences of our cultures, but also made us aware of ‘hot’ and ‘cold’ personality traits within each of our groups. We will work better together after this! (For more info refer to: Foreign to Familiar by Sarah A. Lanier) The second training revolved around physical changes that occur with aging (loss of vision, hearing and mobility). We simulated these changes by trying simple tasks like picking up a pill or buttoning a shirt while eyes were blurred with fogged glasses, ears were muffled with ear plugs and hands were in latex gloves. This training encouraged all of us to be more aware and sympathetic towards seniors. It was eye opening! Nancy Wellnitz is a Director of a Senior Activity Center in Arvada, CO Vacation Bible Schoool with Grandkids The VBS Day was fantastic! Being able to work with the grandchildren as well as the jajas (grandmas) gave us a whole new picture of ROTOM’s impact. Playing with the children really showed what Jesus meant when he said: “Those who become like children are considered greatest in the kingdom of heaven”. (Matthew 18) Theme was: The lost sheep and God’s love for us all. Emma Bean is a student at Allegheny College, PA. She plans to bring a group to Uganda next year through their International Service Club Senior Fellowship Visiting the senior fellowships was one of the highlights of the trip. Seeing the delight on their faces as they greeted us with songs, hugs and dancing made the journey across bumpy, unpaved roads worth every minute. Sharing testimonies and Bible truths together added to the sense that although we live far away, we share the same Jesus. Melissa Parks is member of the ROTOM USA board of Directors
