Taylor makes a surprise return

LEAGuE tWORotherham United 0

Bradford City 0RONNIE Moore caused a surprise on Tuesday by sending Ryan Taylor on – despite not naming him in the squad before kick off.

Taylor has not featured for Rotherham since scoring two goals in last seasons play off final due to injury and although now clear of any knocks, he has missed an entire pre-season’s fitness training.

Moore however was grateful for his contribution to the 0-0 draw and feels the run out can only have done him good.

He said: “It was strange really, we didn’t really want to include him but Marshall done his hamstring in the warm-up, so he come in and said he wouldn’t be right so we had to go and find Tayls who was tucking into fish and chips with a couple of lagers and that so it was a bit hard to throw him on – I’m only kidding.”

“We had to go and tell the

referee what the situation is and change the sub.”

“There was nothing he could do it was just one of them things that happened and it was nice probably for him to get 15 minutes as well.”

Naming the same side that beat Chesterfield, Ronnie Moore displayed confidence in his side. And they didn’t let him down, grinding out the result to help maintain their unbeaten home record this season.

After an end-to-end opening 10 minutes, a chance fell to the Bantams’ Omar Daley, who dummied on the edge of the area, before laying the ball off for Tommy Doherty to fire clear on the Millers goal. Luckily for the Rotherham back four he smashed his effort way over the crossbar.

Rotherham’s best chance of the half fell to Kevin Ellison, who took a free-kick from the edge of the Bradford City box. With Nicky Law at his side, Ellison bent the ball around the Bantams two man wall, but saw his shot go wide at the far post.

Rotherham then pushed on and created more chances. Johnny Mullins zipped in a low cross only to see it cleared by the Bradford City defence, before Adam Le Fondre burst down the wing and whipped the ball in, but again it was batted away by The Bantams.

Nearing half time, Le Fondre – determined to go in with the lead – fired on goal from 30 yards out. On target, it looked like this was finally going to be the goal to open it the game, but it took a last minute deflection and shot wide.

With one additional minute on the clock, a mistake at the back saw Omar Daley surge past Johnny Mullins and into the Rotherham area before firing at Andy Warrington. Making his first save of the game, the Millers stopper instinctively tipped it over the bar. If Bradford had taken the lead at that stage it would’ve been cruel on Ronnie Moore’s men, who completely dominated proceedings in the first half.

After the break, it was more of the same. The Millers created chances, but the finishing had gone missing.

More attempts on goal with no joy brought about the substitution of Danny Harrison for Mark Bradley, but this hardly altered the game. It seemed that Bradford City were happy to dig in and take a point.

However, they could’ve had all three if it hadn’t been for Andy Warrington.

A corner taken by the Bantams was poorly cleared and the ball fell to Gareth Evans inside the area. He

powered a shot at goal and it took a fantastic point blank, instinctive save from Andy Warrington to deny the Bradford City striker.

Ryan Taylor was then introduced, with Tom Pope making way and in the dying embers he had a half chance, but was unable to make his header count, summing up a tense evening for the 3,872 supporters at the Don Valley Stadium.

Keeper Andy Warrington was again awarded Man of the Match, and although Ronnie Moore wasn’t too pleased with that, he was more than happy to share the points.

He said: “Some of the saves he made tonight were fantastic, but I don’t like the keeper getting man of the match when you’re playing at home, that’s what disappoints me.”

“We knew it was going to be a tough game, they’re third bottom, and if people think they’re going to come here and lie down and die, it doesn’t happen.”

“It’s a derby game, there’s a bit of passion, a bit of feeling in the game, we’ve had two really tough games in four days.”

“In the end we were a little bit fortunate probably that we hung on for a nil nil and overall I think its probably been a good point for us.”

Derby day does not disappointLEAGuE tWO

SATURDAY’S derby day was certainly one that didn’t disappoint.

Making one change from the team that comprehensively beat The Bee’s last week, Ronnie Moore brought in Tom Pope to replace Paul Warne.

A frenetic opening saw The Spireites start brightly, forcing a corner within the first five minutes. Drew Talbot’s ball, whipped in low, looked dangerous but Johnny Mullins managed to clear it with his head.

After some gritty tackles in midfield, Tom Newey broke forward and fired a shot towards the Chesterfield goal. The shot could only fly wide and high of Tommy Lee’s goal though.

Like a true derby match, it really was end to end and

on 10 minutes a chance to put Chesterfield one up fell to Talbot again. He could only head a Danny Whitaker corner straight at Andy Warrington though, who made the save with ease.

A cross from Nicky Law on the left almost saw Adam Le Fondre make it one nil with a thumping volley, however the stiker who has scored eight league goals so far this season, could only fire over the crossbar.

In the 22nd minute, Kevin Ellison whipped in a corner after clever work between him and Law.

Geohaghon got his head to it, but nodded it straight to Spireites keeper Tommy Lee who made the save with ease.

More chances fell to the Millers throughout the first half and by this point, the fans were wondering just what it would take to beat Tommy Lee.

A moment of magic from

Adam Le Fondre was all that was required.

Coming out after the break, it took Le Fondre only eight minutes to get the decisive goal.

In space, and taking the ball from a throw in, the Millers number 10 lobbed Lee from just inside the area to make it 1-0, with a goal more akin to the Premier League than the Football League.

Chesterfield almost managed an equaliser on the 68th minute, but Warrington managed to get his hand to it and tip the shot round the post.

As the minutes passed, the banter between the sets of fans increased, with the 4000 strong Rotherham crowd chanting: “Stand up, if you’re one nil up.”

With time running out, the Spireites piled on the pressure and the Millers had to call on Warrington to defend their lead, with the stopper producing a

remarkable double save, first stopping a shot by Niven and then the reply by Davies.

Warrington was awarded the Man of the Match and speaking after the game he said: “I was pleased with the performance, but I was more delighted with the result because obviously in a local derby at home, keeping a clean sheet is credit to the lads in front of me as well.”
