After a gripping 10-goal thriller, Ronnie Moore warned his team they will need to learn from defensive mistakes if they are to challenge for promotion. Moore, who watched his side go behind early in the first half against Cheltenham Town, admitted it was nerve-racking and not something he wants to see from the Rotherham defence again. The Millers boss said: “If we don’t defend better you won’t go up, it’s as simple as that but lets hope it’s a hiccup, we had a clean sheet last week, we conceded a sloppy goal against Lincoln, but we’ve got seven points, and hopefully we’ll learn from what we’ve done.” “I don’t want to see it again to be honest. As a manager there’s nothing worse.” “But we showed a bit of character, we got the second goal just at the right time and then it was a good start for us in the second half.” Although they won, the Millers made hard work of it. A poor start by Rotherham allowed the Robins to go 1-0 up with just four minutes on the clock. A decent cross into the box by defender Danny Andrew from the right found unmarked striker Jeff Goulding at the far post, who fired the ball into the net and past the helpless Andy Warrington. Rotherham equalised on the 16 minute mark with some clinical finishing from top-scorer Adam Le Fondre. A neat lay off from on loan striker Tom Elliot found Le Fondre, who surged into the Robins box, before slotting low past Scott Brown to make it 1-1. More poor defending from the Millers gifted the Robins their next goal. Cheltenham midfielder Brian Smirkle chased a long ball forward, beating the Millers defence, before squaring the ball across the empty six yard area for Wesley Thomas to tap in. It got worse and Cheltenham were 3-1 up by the 36th minute. An awful pass at the back by Exodus Geohaghon was picked up by Wesley Thomas who then passed the ball into the box to substitute Shaun Jeffers who fired a shot past Warrington and into the net. There was still more goals to come and on the 41st minute Rotherham got themselves back into the game with a great shot from 20 yards out by Danny Harrison, who fired up and over Scott Brown after a great lay off from Nicky Law. Three minutes after the break the Millers had a penalty awarded with Elliot barged over in the Robins’ box. Le Fondre fired but Scott Brown saved before Le Fondre smashed home the rebound to make it 3-3. The Millers worked hard and within a minute Rotherham were in front, with Le Fondre heading home a ball that had been headed across the face of goal by Dean Holden, giving the prolific striker his first hat-trick for the Millers. A corner on the 55th minute saw Rotherham make it 5-3 after local lad Ryan Cresswell headed in a cross from Nicky Law. Le Fondre then pushed on and got his fourth of the game and after receiving the ball from out wide before shooting straight at Scott Brown. The Robins keeper got his hand to the shot, but couldn’t stop it and saw the ball go into the bottom corner. With the crowd now firmly behind the Millers, Cheltenham were awarded a penalty on 68 minutes after Cresswell handled the ball inside the area. Wesley Thomas fired the shot, but Warrington parried it to safety. With the game nearly over Cheltenham grabbed a late consolation in the 90th minute to make it 6-4, ending a memorable afternoon for the 3,072 strong crowd. Although Moore was critical of his back four, he couldn’t speak highly enough of star striker Adam Le Fondre. He said: “You cant defend the way we defended today, it was unacceptable for us, but give them credit, I bet it’s been a great game to watch, certainly not a great game for me to watch, but like I say we showed a lot of spirit, we came out and even though certain players weren’t on their game we got the goals at the right time and I thought Adam was just magnificent today.” “That’s the best I’ve seen him on an all round game really.” “He’s worked, he’s chased, he’s harried and he’s put the ball in the back of the net – which he’s good at.” Goalfeast thrills Don Valley fans by Chris Conway At Don Valley Stadium Hero – Adam Le Fondre, right, was on target four times (Pic: Steve Ellis) MILLERS 6 CHELTENHAM 4 Goal ace ALF says he’s going nowhere TOP scorer Adam Le Fondre has refused to be unsettled by transfer speculation linking him with a move to another club.
