Michael’s Musings A slightly disappointing turnout last week for whatever reason, but it was good to welcome some partners to hear John talk on his and Peggy's recent cruise on Royal Princess. John held all of our attention as we came through the lakes and locks of the Panama Canal, the statues of Easter Island and the incestuous history of Pitcairn Island. All much en- joyed by this listener. This week is Youth Week and tonight we wel- come Caitlin Vardy and Stephanie Cheeseman to tell us about it. The week culminates in the concert on Saturday where we are involved in catering. On Tuesday Ken, John Marsden, Graham Jackson and I met up with Dr Mike Kelly at Apex Park to view progress on the airman carving and to have a photo shoot. Thanks for listening! And a special thanks to Derek for operating the TV and to Rohan for loan of the connect-ing equipment. There is no doubt that our ability to use the large TV improves the presentation for both presenter and audience. Editor John

The Great Australian Bike Ride

The ride, to raise funds for the ARHRF, began two weeks ago in Melbourne. Our visiting Rotarian Noel Watt seeks our sponsorship, ei-ther of him or the ride generally. Noel intends to ride in Stage Four, Sydney to Bris-

bane. Stage three covers the route from Mel-bourne to Sydney but the nearest they will be to us is on Good Friday at Canberra.. If you have any questions about fundraising for ARHRF call the office on 02 8837 1900 or email [email protected]

THE WEEK AHEAD

Upfront News

A couple of years ago, Jan Young or-ganised a collection of bras for third world countries. In the event that collec-tion went to the Sal-vation army to assist bushfire victims. SO - ladies please hunt out replacements and pass to Jan, via part-ners and Steve.

DISTRICT ASSEMBLY 2009

A report by incoming Secretary Clare

On 28-29 March 2009 the District Assembly was held at the Bowral High School. Representing Moruya were Rohan Gleeson, Phil Armstrong, Lee Gleeson, John Nader, Malcolm Webber, Derek Anderson, Terry Young, Steve Young and Clare Hack.

Saturday 28 March 2009

The District Governor Mike Pedler welcomed attendees from District 9710 build-ing an emphasis that was aimed at lighting the fire under Club Leadership and put-ting the leadership plan into perspective.

This year Rotary International President Elect John Kenny has come up with the theme “the future of Rotary is in your hands”. This means that it is up to all Rotari-ans within our community and not just up to the President to make sure Rotary meets its goals. The District wants us to “Catch the Rotary Fever” and increase motivation and membership.

To ensure the success of Rotary each Club must have:

a membership and retention strategy; clear goals and objectives between members, trainers, directors and district officers; good lines of communication at all levels; and members who are not afraid to ask questions; Each club should have a development officer and all president-elects for 2010/11 should complete the PRLS basic course.

Rotary email messages need to be easily identified. The tips below are useful.

the first word in the heading should be “Rotary”; respond to each message so that the sender knows that you have received the email and will acknowledge it as soon as practicable; attachments to the District should be in PDF; use an updated virus system; messages are to be in gender-neutral language ie Fellow Rotarians, Chairper-son. Avoid using words like Chairman, he or she; and remember to empty your delete box regularly.

Workshops

The incoming Board members for 2009/10 attended their respective workshops covering the following subjects:

Vocational Service Club Service InternationalCommunity Service New Members Forum YouthSecretaries Public Relations TreasurersClub Administration Membership

The information gained from these workshops was comprehensive and will assist the incoming Board to understand their new role and responsibilities.

Club Leadership Plan

The Club Leadership Plan needs to be shaped to fit what works best for the club, it should:

showcase projects; have a strategy to recruit/retain and keep members interested in Rotary; know how busy each director is; understand the purpose of the standing committees; have the facility to delegate jobs; and in order to generate fresh ideas should get members to sit with their Ser-

vice so that we can learn and share information.To summarise, the plan;

needs to meet the District Governor elect goals and objectives; identify what has gone wrong and what works; and in Service Workshops, we need to listen to concerns and learn.

Dinner Saturday Evening

The presence of Annette Nader and Fran Anderson added some glamour to the en-joyable dinner held at the Moss Vale RSL Club. The dinner was relaxing without too many formalities. The evening was made even better with Rotary providing a bus to and from the venue back to our accommodation.

Sunday 29 March 2009

A Special Assembly of delegates agreed to:

pass the District Budget for Rotary District 9710 for the Financial Year 2009/10; and

amend legislation By-law 11.1

The remainder of the morning provided updated information about:

the Rotary Foundation/Future Vision Plan PRLS RAWS Membership Public Relations Council on Legislation

The District Assembly closed at 1.00pm.

We wish to thank Phil Armstrong for allowing the incoming Board members to travel to Bowral in the Banksia Retirement Village Bus.

Editor’s footnote: I have a cryptic note from Phil Armstrong: “Looking forward to reading Clare’s report as long as it does not mention the Collec-tor Pub.” What can he mean?

Late news: Roger has changed his email [email protected]

Clare has been having problems with her email and asks that you check that you have the correct address:

[email protected].

Our next year’s incoming GYE student.

This is Hedvig Sofia Winsa from the Swedish town of Uppsala, sixteen year old who will be arriving in Moruya mid year. Her mother is a Rotarian in the Uppsala Glunten club.

Batemans Bay will have a student from the same intake - another girl.

Food Advice - Rotary Talks Sense

You will remember that last year Rotary Down Under was urging clubs to con-sider ways of reducing their carbon footprint. Coincidentally, at about the same time, ARHRF gave a grant to a researcher who was studying the impact of hu-man emissions on global warming. The report of that research is now avail-able. It established that in the sample population the average emission was half a litre per day. Mainly, this was nitrogen, but there were significant quantities of the global warming gases carbon dioxide and methane. Further research es-tablished that these could be reduced by selective dieting.

In its covering newsletter, the ARHRF suggests that, based on these findings, each club discuss with its caterer appropriate menus to achieve a worthwhile reduction in the greenhouse gas components of members’ emissions. Meat should be served seldom and in smaller quantities. Cabbages and cauliflowers, milk and beans should not be used. For more information, visit the ARHRF website and follow the links to Research Project 1-4-2009.

THE WIND OF CHANGE - BREAKING NEWS

The airman takes shape: photographer Graham is recording pro-gress and yesterday Dr Mike Kelly Came along to see the project, which, if all goes well, he will formally unveil on Saturday, 6th June.

On a Plumber's Truck:"Don't sleep with a drip. Call your plumber."

On an Electrician's truck: "Let us remove your shorts."

On a Hearse: “Drive carefully - we can wait”
