WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD

I see trees of green, red roses too

I see them bloom for me and you

And I think to myself

What a wonderful world.

I see skies of blue and clouds of white

The bright blessed day, the dark’ sacred night

And I think to myself

What a wonderful world.

The colors of the rainbow so pretty in the sky

Are also on the faces of people going by

I see friends shaking hands, saying how do you do

But they’re really saying, “I love you”.

I hear babies crying, and I watched them grow

They’ll learn much more than I’ll ever know

And I think to myself

What a wonderful world.

Yes, I think to myself

What a wonderful world.

Oh yeah

Pres. Ner P. Laiño

Fellow Pasig Rotarians:

It was really our intention to just celebrate the birthdays of PP Benny

de Guzman, PP Doc Sonny Samson and Dr. Ferds Rivera last May 26

and that was the reason why we decided not to get a guest speaker for

that day. The meeting was adjourned at 2:00PM but most of us left

Baras Rm. about 2:30PM as we still decided to finish drinking the

bottle of wine of Dr. Ferds.

The meeting today will still proceed as per schedule as was agreed

upon last May 26 in spite of the fact that PE Ogie and myself will be

coming from the 107th RI Convention in Seoul, Korea about 2AM of

June 2 also. This really means we are enjoying the Rotary life.

As we have announced, our schedule for this month will be as

follows:

June 2 - Regular meeting

June 4 (Saturday) - Medical Mission

June 9 - Regular meeting

June 11 and June 12 - Planning session at Celine’s resort

in Brgy. Masaya, Bay, Laguna

June 13 (Monday 6PM) - Fellowship at Baras Rm.

June 16 - Meeting cancelled

June 23 - Regular meeting

June 30 - Last regular meeting of

RY 2015-2016

Let us continue enjoying Rotary life. It is, on top of all and among

others, service to the community and mankind.

PP Benny P. De Guzman

Our club assembly last week over-extended as IP Ogie was in a

fighting move. He insisted that under his term, there would not be

any time frame for his President’s time. He can even take 30

minutes, per his claim.

I am reminded of a guest speaker then, the head of the Eastern

Police Department who was being bullied by a past president. He

retorted “either you leave the room, or, I leave this rostrum”.

Imagine if during his President’s time Ogie will retort “if you

don’t want to hear from me any longer, you may leave the

meeting”. That would be tragic.

Two Rotarians got the full attention of the membership last week.

PP Sonny who was seemingly pain-free came as announced to be

one of the celebrants for the day. And, Rtn. Roman, who came as

promised as well. He attended the wedding anniversary Mass of

PP Peping and PPA Bella but did not attend the reception. His

father did and his dad, former Senator and Cabinet Secretary was

seated next to PP Totoy, his golf buddy.

I admire the dedication of the golfers in initiating financial

assistance for Rtn. Bob Peterson. Leaders are PPs Conrad and

Rhett. This will be on 13th June already.

Our former member who is still fighting the Big C would be

Acting Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Jun Yasay had a very nice

stay with us and he did not let the President of the Republic bully

him when he was SEC Chair.

IPP Ramy had a very dark sports glasses last meeting that you

would feel it can see through any wall or screen. He was having a

grand time.

Continuation 1.

Nowadays, if you are seen in a plaid shirt, you are sporting a

Duterte look. Not the style of PP Jing as his was loose in style. But

the glamour of Duterte’s style may not be too long as he is starting

to be repetitive in his style. But the senseless killings seem to be

challenging him. The radio man killed in Quiapo, the various ones

killed in Davao and in Tondo all point that the six months he asked

for would be longer than his full term.

The Tule program is back once again and PP Ferd would not want

to have a part in it. The Community Pediatrics of PE Dr. Aga

would be put to task for our school opening program.

I am scared the long week-end rains did not come as predicted.

Baka, a week delayed? Nevertheless, this will again make traffic

very bad and attendance will further be affected.

I hope that PP Bobby P. can make his medical requirements easier

and be back to the club before Ogie’s induction. Perhaps a team of

PDG Raffy, PP Peping and PP Esto can lure him back as he has

given many prestigious contributions to our club in many district

activities. He is one of the better known Rotarians of our club.

The prices of gasoline and diesel have been increasing

successively for the last couples of weeks, and, no exception, a

20% increase in our Rotary bills over WCP Ner huge discount

then has been announced. Who says Incoming Treasurer Wowie is

not doing his job. Inumpisahan na tayo.

UN CHIEF BAN KI-MOON OPENS KOREA CONVENTION

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon was among the first

to welcome Rotary members and friends to the 107th Rotary

Convention, heralded as one of the largest-ever gatherings of

Rotarians and the most multicultural assembly of nonprofit leaders in

Korea.

He offered a message of gratitude: “Rotarians do remarkable work

around the world,” Ban told the thousands of attendees gathered at

KINTEX, the Korea International Exhibition and Convention Center

in Goyang city, on the outskirts of Seoul. “You help the United

Nations reach our goals, and you help the world understand the

United Nations.”

He described Allan Albert, the former Rotary president who, 70 years

ago this month, participated in discussions that led to the formation of

the UN, as “a passionate defender of human understanding who

called for people to be real factors in real peace. Together we are

working to realize this vision.”

Ban, the Korean national who has led the UN and its ambitious

development agenda since 2007, thanked Rotary for its leadership

and commitment to humanitarian causes. He highlighted Rotary’s

contributions to the fight against polio, in both funding and advocacy.

“The United Nations is proud to be a partner in ending this

debilitating disease,” he said, referring to UNICEF’s role in the

Global Polio Eradication Initiative. “We must keep up the fight.

Please continue to raise your voices, hold your governments

accountable, and campaign hard.”

The opening session on Sunday morning was infused with local

flavor: drummers, dancers, and martial artists warmed up the crowd

with K-pop and tae kwon do before the formal remarks began.

Paul Harris makes a surprise appearance

An animated hologram of Rotary founder Paul Harris joined RI

President K.R. Ravindran on stage. After telling Harris about

Rotary’s progress, Ravindran greeted attendees and reflected on his

term as Rotary president, including a recent decision by the Council

on Legislation to grant clubs more flexibility and autonomy.

“The traditional Rotary model, of weekly meetings and meals, may

not be a viable proposition to the professionals of all ages we most

need to attract,” Ravindran said. “Your Council made more

progressive changes to our constitution than any Council in history

— with an eye to a future in which the business of Rotary will be

conducted on a level more ambitious than ever before.”

Special guests included prime ministers Hwang Kyo-ahn of South

Korea, and Ranil Wickremesinghe of Ravindran’s native Sri Lanka.

Hwang, who was the charter president of the Rotary Club of Seoul

before he served as minister of justice, spoke about Rotary’s history

and presence in South Korea, now the fourth-strongest Rotary

country in terms of membership and one of the strongest supporters

of The Rotary Foundation, per capita.

“Ours is a nation built on the ruins of war,” he said. “Our recovery

from those dark days has been called a miracle, but it is the kind of

miracle that Rotary knows well: of many hands working together to

achieve a common goal that could not have been achieved alone.”

Continuation 2.

Wickremesinghe described polio’s unlikely exit from his own war-

torn nation 20 years ago. He also gave a government official’s

perspective on the interplay between government and service

organizations such as Rotary.

“A Rotary club provides a country with something that every

community in every country needs.” He said it complements the

government’s work “by offering a way for people who want to make

a difference in their community to do it for themselves, together,

without having to run for office first.”

Walk for peace

In the days and weeks before the convention kicked off, an estimated

43,000 attendees from 160 countries arrived in Seoul, announcing

their presence with a parade through the city center on Saturday.

Several thousand participants, many clad in the traditional attire of

their home countries, gathered in front of city hall to join in the 3K

Walk for Peace. The route to Gwanghwamun Square led participants

past the “Rotary Way” photography exhibit featuring images of

Rotary service, set against the mountainous backdrop of Bukhansan

National Park in the distance.

Sue and Jim Dunlop, members of the Rotary Club of Geelong East,

Victoria, were proud to represent Australia at the walk. Before they

arrived in Seoul, the Dunlops explored the Korean countryside on one

of the Host Organization Committee tours, sampling local fare and

mingling with fellow members.

Sue said she savored the vibrant multicultural atmosphere that filled

Gwanghwamun Square on Saturday. Her musings about the 3K Walk

for Peace could have applied just as easily to the convention itself: “If

events like this could happen all the time, in every city around the

world, wouldn’t it be wonderful?”
