Solo Exhibition by Mr Kim Whye Kee, the Winner of Artisan of the Year 2018

By: Honorary Secretary Rtn Connie Ho

Extraordinary pottery work by an extraordinary man - Mr Kim Whye Kee, Singaporean gang leader served 10 years’

jail, got 9 strokes of cane and now had his very own 1st Solo Exhibition.

This event was organized by Temenggong Artists-In-Residence (TMG), showcases Why Kee’s work as a

Singaporean potter. Opening speech by the Minister of Home Affairs and Minister for Law, K Shanmugam is

heartwarming – “Ten years ago, Kim Whye Kee was a young man with a past, with convictions for drug abuse, extortion and

gang-related activities. When he attended his father's funeral in handcuffs in 2007, Whye Kee realised that he had to turn over a

new leaf. He took up pottery classes in prison - which started him on a journey of recovery. One of Whye Kee's works was

displayed at a Yellow Ribbon art exhibition, where his talent was noticed by Singaporean artist Henri Chen, the founder of

Temenggong_art_residencies and soon after Whye Kee’s release, Henri sent him to LASALLE College of the Arts to pursue

degree in Fine Arts and Whye Kee graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in Fine Arts. Whye Kee's

perseverance and commitment to improve himself have left him to make significant contributions to Singapore's art scene,

and meaningfully impact the lives of many.”

Grateful for the support he has received, Whye Kee co-founded Beacon of Life, which reaches out of at-risk youths

with difficult family backgrounds, using art and sports to guide them away from negative influences. Whye Kee has

also volunteered in the Taman Jurong grassroots for eight years.

What is unknown to others, 50% of the proceeds of this exhibition go to the service projects Whye Kee

supports. Whye Kee’s remarkable journey is truly an inspiration to us all!!

Speaker Dr Lo Swee Won with President Mark

From left: VP Hassan, Dr Lo & President Mark

Dr Lo is a PhD graduate in Information Systems from Singapore Management University and a Master of Engineering from Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Korea. She was also graduated from Multimedia University, Selangor, Malaysia with a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) in electronics majoring in telecommunication. She is a lecturer at the Singapore University of Social Sciences and a member of the Technical Committee for Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technologies. Dr Lo’s talk covered an introduction to Blockchain and Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT), which refers to a novel and fast-evolving approach to recording and sharing data across multiple data stores (or ledgers). Dr Lo noted that DLT was easy to implement if its users were trustworthy. She explained Blockchain’s provision of trust. Dr Lo also spoke of the “Tragedy of the Commons” and illustrated its concepts. She further gave a more technical introduction to Cryptoeconomy and Blockchain Evolution. (A copy of Dr Lo’s presentation is available from the Secretariat.)

President Mark called on VP Hassan Moosa who warmly thanked Dr Lo for her very insightful presentation, adding that should she decide to give another presentation to the Club, the meeting would be a sold out! VP Hassan noted that Blockchain was an elegant piece of technology; and whilst he was familiar with it, he realised there was a lot more he did not know. He further thanked Dr Lo for her work in R&D in this field and helping to change the world for the better.

The Guide to Daily Living

Before doing the things we want to do, consider first, the

Precepts of the guide. Ask ourselves these 4 questions and

act upon them:

First: Have I spent some time in self-examination?

Second: Have I spent quality time with my family?

Third: Have I given my best to my work?

Fourth: Have I given some time to someone near and far?

The Guide, in fact, encompasses the 4 parts of the Object of Rotary.

The Four-Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build goodwill and better friendship?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
