Kick off your shoes, or buckle them up. Whether you want to slow it down or ramp it up, either attitude works in Rossland, as long as you’re up for doing it Kootenay-style.

Rossland’s reputation at first blush is that of a four-season recreational Shangri-La. Spring, summer and fall serves up world-class mountain biking, hiking, and golfing. There’s a healthy glow in people’s cheeks as they stride down the revamped downtown core. The sidewalk coffee scene hums and people gather and fuel up for one kind of fun or another.

As for winter, Rossland’s legend as a big mountain experience with a genuine, small town vibe, continues to grow. Kerrin Lee-Gartner both earned their chops on the slopes of Red. Today, Red Mountain Resort — a mere 5-minute hop from

downtown — continues to pile up the awards. In the last year: #8 on the New York Times top 10 places in the world (not just ski areas, but places in general!) #1 ski town in Powder Magazine’s Ski Town Throw-down, and #1 most underrated resort. And this year, the Most Improved North American Resort and Best Upcoming Resort in the 2014 World Snow Awards.

But downhill skiing only partly describes the winter scene. Just beyond the ski lifts, there’s cat skiing, back country touring, world-class cross-country skiing, and as many miles of snow-shoeing in the winter as there are mountain biking trails in the summer.

It’s all here. But Rossland is so much more than just a place to play.

There’s a vibrant arts and music scene that seems to grow stronger every year. Catch a concert at the historic Miners’ Hall.

ROSSLAND FACTS

Incorporated in 1897

Founded by Ross Thompson – hence “Ross”land.

Rossland is situated within an extinct volcano. At an elevation of 1023m, it is one of Canada’s highest cities.

By 1887 Rossland had a population of 7,000 with 42 saloons, 4 banks and 17 law firms.

The Centre Star, War Eagle and Le Roi mines produced 96% of Rossland’s one and a half million tons of ore by 1903.

In 1929, after forty exciting years of mining gold, and a combined output worth almost 165 million dollars, the treasure vault on Red Mountain was closed.

Olaus Jeldness was inducted into the Canadian Ski Hall of Fame in 1988.

Voted as Canada’s #1 outdoor town by Explore Magazine, Rossland is widely renowned for its rugged outdoor adventure, small-town warmth and hospitality.

Our arts council brings in amazing talent for a town this size. And the Gold Fever Follies runs a lively sum-mer stock theatre show that reflects Rossland’s rich mining history. Watch can-can dancers whoop it up like they did when the gold was flowing in the early 1900s.

And if it’s shopping or browsing through art galleries you’re after, you’ll find Rossland’s compact down-town a refreshing departure from the usual highway strip malls. Our downtown core — all four blocks of it — is a postcard of local art galleries, boutiques, coffee hangouts and spe-cialty retail shops. Sorry, no big box stores or chain outlets. Not here.

In the pages that follow, we’ll go into more detail on all the differ-ent experiences you can enjoy here, but we also want to make sure you get a full picture of what gives this town its special mojo. It’s the people that visitors tend to talk about most, even after having enjoyed our stores, our restaurants, our mountain playground. So in keeping with that thought, we would like to introduce a few of them.

People like Jenny Baillie. Each summer, Jenny and a group of her fellow artists get together in the mountains for a week of painting, hiking and kinship. They take what would normally be a solitary pursuit of their art and turn it into a great ex-cuse for getting the ladies together to share their passion for painting and their love of the mountains. That’s pure Kootenay.

Then there are the wolf packs of renegade trail builders like Ryan Kuhn and his pals who lug chainsaws and hoe-dads into the surrounding mountains to build new mountain bike trails. No pay, thanks, it’s just for kicks. That’s Rossland — pay it forward by creating some fun that everyone can enjoy.

20 years after they cashed in their last paycheque from Red. This group of like-minded friends thought it would be a good idea to raise a statue in honour of Rossland’s original ski bum, Olaus Jeld-ness. So that’s just what they did. They sold raffle tickets, organized fund-raising dances, and begged for sponsorship support. Last year, the larger-than-life bronze was raised in tribute to the very special character who embodies the spirit of Red.

Jeldness was a Norwegian miner who was drawn to Rossland in 1897 as word spread around the world of the rich gold strikes on Red Mountain. Jeldness was also a great promoter of skiing and, as it turns out, a pretty good guy for organizing a party. He organized the first Rossland Winter Carnival in 1898 which included Canada’s first ski championship, which he won handily. He also organized a less formal, but equally famous ski race that became known as the “Tea Party.” There were bottles of liquid courage buried in the snow on the uptrack on Red Mountain while the skiing on the way back down was splattered with garage-sale crashes.

Meet a couple of Rosslanders who help stretch our town’s vibe well beyond just skis and bikes. Nadine Tremblay and Rupert Keiller are key movers and shakers in the local arts scene.

Nadine is best known as a performer and producer with Iron Mountain Theatre, which each season puts up at least one new show. And there’s a group of locals for whom life wouldn’t be the same without “Nads.” Under her profes-sional guidance, the Rossland Glee Club practices and then delivers sweet harmonies and moving rhythms at a number of Rossland cultural events throughout the year. Makin’ it work

Nadine and Rupert live and breathe the performing arts. Nadine grew up in Vancouver as a dancer and a singer,

studied opera, then musical theatre, then music therapy. Rupert is a gold-record rock star from Australia who took

a break from his life with Sonicanimation for a trip to Ross-land, and like so many others, somehow forgot to go home.

The two are now in the start-up phase of their new company, Altitude Entertainment.

“We offer corporations a new way of connecting their staff with their company’s strategic direction,” says Rupert. “We’ll bring them the The Gameshow Show, or organize theme parties, help with strategic planning or focused workshops, where a theatrical element might help teams connect and get creative.”About Rossland

“This town’s beauty and affordability makes the artist lifestyle easy,” says Nadine. “I’m inspired here at a bunch of different levels. People here are super cool. I feel like the community support makes any endeavor possible if you work hard enough.”

“And the potlucks are pretty good here, too,” she adds.

wigs, rocketing through the streets of Rossland on homemade bobsleds at 80 kph. Catch a glimpse of 85-year-old Bobbi La Fond, mother of 15. Bobbi and her support crew of sons and daughters might not be the fastest down the bobsled course, but no team has more fun. Indeed, the spirit of Olaus is alive and well today.

Today, the 3,500 people who call Rossland home are an eclectic, live-and-let-play mix of people. Blue collar smelter workers live next to orthopedic surgeons who live next to young ski bums. And a growing number of “nomadic entrepreneurs” — self-employed freelancers — are trading time spent commuting to work in the big city for a handful of runs down Red or a quick outing on a nearby trail. Call it a “Rossland business break.”

So let’s run Rossland’s checklist one more time: world-class four-season recreation, no crowds, small town charm. Read on for more. We hope you enjoy the words, the pictures and the people of Rossland presented in these pages. The hope is that if you see a fit for yourself in our town you’ll make plans to come for a visit. feet. Big groomers in Paradise Basin and down Main Run. Mythic tree skiing — from gentle glades to steep trees and chutes. This is a mountain that will keep interme-diate and advanced skiers giggling for… well, if you ask the retirees, forever. On the lower slopes, the Silverlode chair keeps the beginners happy and hot chocolate and a warm lodge is just a few minutes away.

Lift lines are rarely more than a few minutes, even on weekends — except for big powder mornings when the 20-centimetre rule kicks in and many locals call in sick to work. Uncrowded, unspoiled. Unreal.

Big Red Cats, just up the road, continues to book solid, offering some 20,000 hectares of more trees and even more Kootenay powder.

And for those who like to earn their turns, the side country touring in this area keeps every powder hound happy.

Red’s challenging slopes breed world-class skiers. Check out the Wall of Fame in Rafter’s bar and you’ll get the picture. Olympic gold medalists Nancy Greene and Kerrin Lee-Gartner highlight the ranks of the many national team skiers who earned their stripes here. Today, pick up any ski or snowboard mag and odds are good that there is a shot of a Rossland-raised athlete collecting either an award or some major airtime. Dane Tudor — IF3’s 2009 Best Male pro skier — makes Red his home mountain. So does two-time Canadian Junior Champion free-skier Colston VB. MEET COLESTON VBColston VB is a Rosslander on the move. This ac-

complished free-skier is a two-time Canadian Junior Champion, made the cover shot for Skier Magazine twice, and has been both in front of the lens as well as behind the lens in dozens of short internet ski flicks.

Colston has plans to direct and produce more films in the future, but he has to fit it all in between summer jobs, and chasing down political science and marketing majors at the University of Victoria, which he is doing at the steady, yet winter-friendly pace of one fall semester per year. standup snowboarder who is competing in Boardercross in the Sochi Games in 2014. Kimberly Joines is a two-time IPC world champion, 22-time IPC World Cup winner and Paralympic bronze medallist sit-skier. The list goes on.

Rossland even has a ski academy. Red Mountain Acad-emies allows students to get their high school education while spending much of their days being coached in alpine racing, snowboarding, free skiing or Nordic skiing.

For the rest of us mere mortal skiers who come to ski or ride in Rossland, the first thing you’ll notice — after you quit staring up at all those trees and terrain — is that this place still has a club feel. You’ll see ski moms and ski dads wrestling their three-year-olds into their helmets and boots, priming them early for life in the mountains. Keep on the lookout for these young apprentices as they weave through the trees or huck a little air with parents in tow. Toddler huckers. Daddy huckers. Mother huckers. You get the picture.

At the other end of the age spectrum, you’ll see a sizeable retirement crowd, fixtures on the slope who put in 100-day ski seasons as faithfully as all of the itinerant ski bums who move to town, existing on pasta and homebrew.

One last addition to mention. This year, the free Mountain Shuttle will operate every 45 minutes between town and the lodge, so getting to the lifts just got easier than ever.

There’s some good ski areas out there, and even a few great ones. We like to think ours fits nicely into the second category. And with the added charms of our town and its people, it’s one of a kind. n

OUNTAIN BIKING has become as much a way of life around here in summer as skiing is in winter. Long before the ski lifts stop turning, the shovels come out to clear the snow off a trail on the south end of town appropriately known as Spring Cleaning. All the young dudes and Betties are itching to start the new season before the winter one has even finished.

The network of trails that radiate out of Rossland’s town centre have been built and maintained by a

variety of people networks. On the structured side of that equation, our local trails society is constantly building, signing and maintaining trails. On the down low, local chain-saw gangs are always working on some new pet project trail, or con-structing another bridge, or skinny, or launch pad. Word spreads like wildfire, and new trails like Larch Ridge or SuperMegaDeath (which is anything but) suddenly become the talk of the town.

If you’re just earning your moun-tain biking chops (or feeling lazy) take a flat cruise on the old rail-grade. On the other end of the scale, tackle the Seven Summits — a 30-km International Mountain Bike Association “epic” where a solid bike, solid legs, good bike skills and extra water are a must.

A revamped summer-service shuttle promises a dependable lift for bikers and their rigs to the start of the Seven Summits Trail.

MOUNTAIN BIKING FACTS

The Kootenay Columbia Trail Society’s extensive trail network spans 170 km, including Rossland’s “urban trails” that thread through town.

The Seven Summits trail was awarded the 2007 “Trail of the Year” by Bike Magazine. Seven Summits, one of only 36 IMBA “Epic” rated trails, is a 30.4 km ridge ride that passes within a half hour ascent of seven major peaks in the Rossland area.

Rossland has hosted several mountain biking races, includ-ing the Rossland Fat Tire Festival, the Rubberhead, and a Noram.

Biking around Rossland offers countless options and combinations of trails fit for every rider and every style of riding. The town sits in the exact middle of things, so you’re never far from that well-earned beverage at the end of your ride.

Piece of advice. Don’t be shy about asking for advice or directions. With so many options and junctions, it’s easy to get turned around, despite the signage. n

MEET RYAN KUHN

Ryan might be Rossland’s version of a human Swiss Army knife. As an emergency coordinator, his day job takes him all around the Kootenays (but never without a bike or some skis tucked in the boot, depending on the season).

In the summer, if Ryan isn’t competing on the downhill mountain bike circuit, he’ll either be coaching kids (kootenaymountainbiking.com) or volunteering his time and sweat in building some of Rossland’s finest bike trails.

In winters he combines skiing with freelance writing, creating content for ski mags on touring and back-country equipment. “Not much money in this, but it helps pay for gear,” smiles Ryan

“What I love about Rossland is we that while we’re surrounded by mountains ideal for both trails and skiing, ultimately it’s the people that really do it for my family and me. We feel so at home with other mad mountain folks who love doing the same things and share our same values”.

THERE’S A GROWING cadre of thin-tired road-toad cognoscenti who will tell you that the road riding out of Rossland rivals the

quality of mountain biking. Routes directly out of Rossland

are in the advanced or difficult category so bring your climbing legs. But head down to the Columbia River valley — either 10 km down the hill to Trail, or 20 km across the line to Northport, Washington — and you’ll find a wonderful mix of rolling terrain, sparse traffic and stunning views. There’s enough riding to keep the most adventurous rider happy.

Here are just a few of our favou-rite rides:

Seven Mile Dam/Waneta High-way: (Moderate: 40-60 km) You can adjust your starting point to make this ride longer or shorter, but be sure to include the flat and scenic warm-up down the Waneta highway. Then turn up the Seven Mile dam road with its stiff but short (3 km) climb to the Pend Oreille River valley.

This quiet back road is the perfect place to practice pace-lining or to spin easy and simply take in the views.

Nancy Greene Lake: (Moderate-Difficult: 30 km) Head north out of Rossland up Highway 3B and start climbing up and over Strawberry Pass (1,600 m) and then down to the refreshing waters of Nancy’s namesake. The inclines aren’t too steep and the road offers a couple of flat reprieves. This out and back is a great ride on a hot day.

Rossland/Northport loop: (Difficult: 63 km) Don’t forget your passport! Start off by rocketing down the 7 to 10 per cent grade into Trail and then roll downstream along the mighty Columbia River, crossing the border into the U.S. and down a sleepy backroad to the small town of Northport. Enjoy the river views and make a game of count-ing the traffic (usually on one hand.) At Northport, grab an espresso and start the rewarding grind back up to Rossland — 25 kms of steady climbing. n

THE RED-STONE RESORT course cradles the lower elevations of town while

framing fantastic views of Red Mountain and the rest of the Rossland range to the north. Should you play your three-wood on this teeshot, or just take pictures for a while. Why not do both?

An integral part of Rossland for generations, the beautiful old nine-hole course set within a rich, tree-filled valley was run as the Rossland Trail Country

Club for many years. But in recent years, it has been trans-formed into Redstone Resort — an epic 18-hole mountain track. Canada’s renowned course designer Les Furber made this his first signature golf course. This place isn’t just scenic. It’s a course where both strategists and heroes can do their thing.

especially the first time. The mountain air and elevated tees will have your shot flying further than usual, but the back tees (6,863 yards) on this par-72 layout are defi-nitely for the scratch handi-cappers and professionals.

Join the locals for a post-round beverage in the classic log clubhouse. You can’t manufacture the kind of history that has been made there over the years.

Another option just 10 min-utes away from Redstone is Birchbank. Located above the Columbia River, golfers will appreciate its classic serenity and expansive, walkable fairways. Keep an eye out for mountain goats on the rock bluff across the river.

There are many other beautiful courses scattered throughout the region, stretching from Grand Forks and Christina Lake in the west, through to Castlegar and to Nelson and Balfour in the east. It is simply a golfer’s paradise! n

MEET FRANK & MARI CONRADIE

Meet the Conradies, Mari and Frank, who were only too eager to talk up the golfing life in Rossland.

“We feel so incredibly fortunate to have an award-win-ning golf course just minutes away from our door. Every hole is different. The views of the mountains and forests and creeks are spectacular, and the pace on course always lets us play at a good tempo,” says Mari of Rossland’s Red-stone Resort. “Golfing just doesn’t get any better than this.”

Native South Africans, Mari and Frank moved to Ross-land 11 years ago so Frank could join up with Qfinsoft — a Rossland-located software company that develops engineering simulation software. Mari works there too in administration. They moved here for Frank’s job, but both immediately fell in love with the whole Kootenay experi-ence. And they haven’t looked back.

“This is a recreational paradise and we feel truly spoiled for choice as we raise our two young boys. We play tennis, go biking and hiking and camping… and in winter we ski downhill, cross country, we snowshoe, we curl, we skate and we play hockey,” say Mari, “Or should I say, Frank plays hockey with the boys. I’m just learning to skate so I can join them.”

Quite a list, Mari. It has us thinking that Frank might also start developing some software to test the limits on how many different sports a human can manage without breaking. Just a thought.

IN THE WINTER, the buzz around skiing is palpable, but in the summer, a sweet, laid-back vibe whis-pers in your ear that your list of to-dos or must-sees can wait until tomorrow, or the next day.

In the spring, the trails clear of snow and people walk their dogs or take in a stroll, deep

in conversation. An occasional jogger might pass you by, but there’s a whole world out there telling you to simply head out the door and go for a walkabout. In a half hour, you can be on top of KC mountain, staring down on Rossland’s brightly coloured roofs, 360-de-gree panoramas of the Rossland Range, and the Columbia river valley.

Back in town, grab a walking tour map and learn about Rossland’s many heritage buildings. Then check out the museum for more information of how this town grew into itself.

Don’t miss the weekly farmers’ market each Thurs-day for some tasty treats and good people watching.

Towards June, the alpine calls to the more adventur-ous. Take a day to hike to Old Glory or along the Seven Summits. By July the huckleberries are getting primed for picking. Within a few minutes of leaving town you can be competing with the bears for this delicious fruit. (We’d tell you just where to go for the motherlode of hucks, but then we’d have to kill ya. Sorry, you’re on your own here.)

When the weather heats up you can take refuge with a dip in Nancy Greene Lake. Or find your cool in the dark shadows of another walk in the woods. Or cast your gaze down to the Columbia River – one of the premium trout streams in North America.

Ahh, summer in Ross-land. It’s all good. n

WHILE ROSSLAND’S alpine skiing gets most of the sexy press around here, skinny-ski skiers are quick to give a sly smile when asked what skiing around here means

to them. The Black Jack trail system — located right across the road from its big cousin Red — is every bit as impres-sive in its own right. Black Jack has 40 kilometres of groomed skating and classic trails with three warming huts spread along the way, a biathlon range, and even a doggy loop. There’s a variety of beginner, intermediate and expert terrain, the grooming is pro-style, and the folks you’ll meet will remind you once again that you’re in a special part of the world.

How does a moonlight ski and fondue sound to you? An evening with “Le Petit Fromage” is yet another weird and wonderful example of how people around here mix snow and people for an altogether good time.

And for those grow-ing numbers of skiers taking up light touring, Strawberry Pass is see-ing more and more people wandering around on their “bush skis.” Fish scales for climbing, a bit of shape for turning, these skis are opening up a whole new world of low impact, low angle skiing. Skiers with a decent map or a bit of local knowledge (just ask) will help you sniff out the best skiing and the funky warming huts that pepper the landscape. n

MEET AL FISHERAl Fisher is 83 years young and when you’re out for your morning walk, there’s a good chance you’ll catch a glimpse of Al’s tall, thin frame and determined look as he pedals past you on his road bike, or heads up for a hike up Red, ski poles in hand. Or in the win-ter, you might catch him gliding around the Black Jack Cross Country ski trails, enjoying the sport that in his younger days earned him a spot in the B.C. Sports Hall of Fame for his work in developing the cross-country race program at UBC.

Al was born and raised in Rossland but left town to go to university. “In those days, we did it all,” says Al. “We had to compete in ski jumping, cross country, slalom and downhill.”

Al remains a key player within the Black Jack Cross Coun-try club, tirelessly spearheading Olympic caliber coaching and skier development programs for the next generation of Rossland skiers. It was Al who lured former women’s na-tional team coach, Dave Woods, to town. Woods continues to place our local skiers on provincial and national teams.

Thanks Al for showing us all how to live young.

Rossland has the highest per capita cross-country skiers in Canada.

The Black Jack Ski Club is a non-profit of 600+ members located 3 km north of Rossland.

The ski club owns 20 acres at the trail head and are stew-ards for approximately 1855 additional acres.

Try cross-country at night! Black Jack has 2.6 km of lit trail.

Black Jack consists of world-class trails and facilities including a biathlon range located at the ideal training altitude of 1,340 metres.

Black Jack has hosted several competitions over the years including the Haywood NorAm Canada Cup, Canadian Junior and U23 World trials.

ROSSLAND’S REPUTATION for being one big playground is well deserved, but the arts scene in this town is making a good case for the argument that we are more than just ski

wax and knobby tires. An emerging cadre of young Ross-

land filmmakers is figuring out how to combine passion for the outdoors with creative flair. Lifecycles — a film by Ross-landers Derek Frankowski and Ryan Gibb — is a stunning example how art mimics mountain bike life.

The annual Rossland Mountain Film Festival, held in November show-cases filmmakers and multi-media presentations.

On the stage, you can take in summer stock theatre with a historical twist with the Gold Fever Follies. The live musi-cal theatre show has been held in the restored 1898 Miners’ Hall during July and August since 1987. This lively show brings to life stories from Rossland’s rich gold mining history. Great for the whole family!

Or you can catch the production that the Rossland Light Opera Players, British Columbia’s oldest amateur musical the-atre group, stages each winter.

The Council for Arts and Culture is Rossland’s pipeline for local culture vultures. Live music and theatre make up their Performance Series, all of which make the Miners’ Hall the go-to place throughout the year. And on the third Sunday of every month you can take in the Joe Hill Coffee house, where local talent each get their ten minutes at the mic. The impressive acts range from local rock stars to the Boomtown Garter Girls, whose can-can dance has been going strong for over 30 years.

The beautiful new Rossland Art Gal-lery in the old Bank of Montreal building is now home to rotating art exhibitions, ranging from sculpture to painting to fabric to graffiti art.

And in the summer, the Rossland Mountain Market creates a Thursday streetscape of live music, artists and artisans, fresh local produce and yummy treats. n

MEET JENNY BAILLIEJenny Baillie’s acrylic paintings

reflect big, bold, outdoor themes with a touch of the surreal, which might in turn be a reflection of her own life in Rossland.

“Sometimes I struggle with the flow of a painting. I’m sure most artists do. But just as often, my problem is I’m having too much fun skiing or hiking!”

Jenny landed in Rossland 30 years ago, pointed here by a small group of Banff/Lake Louise refugees who told her that “the housing was cheap and skiing was deep.”

Jenny is a native New Zealander, so Rossland’s mild, green summers felt like home, and her ambition to learn to ski powder made the perfect fit.

“I was in paradise. I fell in love with the Kootenay landscape so I began to work in watercolours as a way to express how I felt about this place. I’ve switched to acrylics because they allow me to “go big” and I want to go big — big brush strokes, big can-vases, big buckets of paint!”

MEET STEPHANIE ROBINSON

Stephanie Robinson’s infectious smile and her Ross-land lifestyle make a pretty good case that mountain girls know how to have fun.

Born and raised in Banff, Stephanie was a nation-ally ranked mogul skier when she met Rossland’s own national team skier Don Stevens. It was 17 years ago when they got married, set up house in Rossland and got down to the business of growing a family. Their two boys now compete on the free-skiing circuit.

“They’ve been kicking my butt on the hill since they were 13,” says Stephanie, “but they still can’t out ski their father.”

Stephanie has also been growing her own business — Red Pair Shoes. “Most people, especially women, love shoes. I really didn’t know quite how much until I opened!” About Rossland

“To me Rossland is where the great skiers come to ski. And now that mountain biking has taken hold of this town, it is where the great bikers come to ride. Because of that connection to both these sports, I often bump into people from my past that are visiting the area to get some Kootenay vibes! “My favourite things to do in Rossland

“That’s easy — my first favourite thing to do is ski. My second favourite thing: ski — with my boys that is, when they are tired and are willing to wait for me. MEET TRISH DYER

It was a couple years back when Trish Dyer was in her second year of operating Mountain Nugget chocolate shop, while at the same time deep into her third trimes-ter as an expectant mother.

“The whole town supported me through my pregnancy. I was determined to keep working right up to end, and how people embraced my pregnancy here was over-whelming and beautiful,” says Trish, adding with a smile, “right up to the moment when I went into labour! Not good timing since my son decided to come into the world on Valentine’s day!”

That’s the price you pay when you get an entire town hooked on handmade truffles, chocolates, and artisan ice cream.

Trish herself remains hooked on the mountains and this community. She was raised a mountain girl in Rossland, ski raced, graduated and left her Rossland nest to travel, ski bum, and attend university. Her path of learning also included a chocolate school in France. Lucky Rossland. Trish’s treats have became a decadent obsession for many locals and returning visitors.

“Rossland is a beautiful place to live — to build a family and a business,” says Trish. “My son Beaumont — he’s two now — already has three season passes from Red. I had his first pass picture taken when he was still in my belly. Ski pass pictures are how we mark how we grow old in this town.”

And If running an expanding business and keeping an eye on a bouncing baby boy wasn’t enough, Trish also ran the Nancy Greene Racers for four years, organizing pods of young skiers and coaches.

“We’re only here because of the support this commu-nity gives us,” say Trish, “so it’s easy to give it back.”

A FUNNY THING happens in Rossland — people come to visit, then never leave!

More and more “nomadic entrepreneurs” try Rossland’s skiing, or drive through on their way to somewhere else, but end up transplanting their lives and businesses to Rossland, drawn by the affordability and the quality of life.

Meet Jim Firstbrook. Jim has climbed many mountains, both literally and in business. His love of the outdoors led him to guid-ing, outdoor instruction and seasonal stints as a tree planter, while his engineering physics degree led him to managing software development teams with various companies.

But life in the mountains was always front of mind and so Jim made the move to Rossland.

“There weren’t any software development jobs for me in this area when I first moved here in 2007,” says Jim. “And then I came across an idea that was a good fit for me, a start-up that I knew we could develop from a home base in Rossland.”

His company is Thoughtstream — an online stakeholder engagement solution. Between skiing in winter and mountain biking in the sum-mer months, Jim worked hard to develop the company and get it up and running.

“Our first sales were in 2011, but in the last year things have really taken off. We now have

13 people working in Rossland and Nelson and another dozen employees working on the B.C. lower mainland.”

“Our early investors naturally assumed we’d set up an office in Vancouver,” says Jim. “But we’re doing just fine working out of our Rossland and home offices. ”

“What I love about Rossland is the easy access to great recre-ation. I can ski from my back yard, drive five minutes and be at a world class ski resort, or drive 10 minutes and be in excellent back country skiing. And the mountain biking — which is equally fantastic — is just as close.

“And it’s a totally cool little town with friendly people, great shops and a thriving vibe of like-minded people. No reasons I can

think of to be anywhere else.”—
