Where else are you going to findover 100 lakes in one region for allyour boating needs?

Within a 50 kilometre radius of Lac La Biche, outdoorenthusiasts can find over 100 bodies of water perfect for asecluded float under the summer sun, a canoe trip into theback country, a kayak race around a series of remoteislands, a family fishing trip, or wide open waters withenough space to bounce even the most 'glued-in'passenger from the tube your boat is pulling.

The waters of Beaver Lake and Lac La Biche lake are oftenchurning most summer days with water-ski boats,pontoon-boat travelers and fishermen looking for thathidden underwater ledge or weed bed. In recent years thesights of tall sailboats can be seen on the waters, revivingthe popular annual Desperado Sailboat Race held eachAugust long weekend.

With so many large lakes in the region there is enoughroom for those looking to zip around while still offeringquieter areas for those looking to float along with thewaves and just enjoy the scenery.

Let us float aquestion your way …

This is a guaranteed adventure that will take you into a unique area ofthe Lakeland Provincial Park, Alberta’s only backcountry canoe circuit.Just make sure not to forget the essentials, because for the next fewdays of approximately 38 kilometres of paddling, it’s only you andMother Nature. These paddle-happy days will take you across severalpristine lakes where the days start with the call of a loon and end withthe flapping wings and splashing feet of a pod of pelicans landing onthe water for a night’s rest.

The Lakeland backcountry is home to several outdoor activities as theLakeland Provincial Park boasts over 45 kilometres of trails for biking, hiking, and cross-country skiing. With more than 30 backcountrycampsites it is easy to plan a true outdoor adventure full of wildlife-viewing and photo opportunities.

If you’re looking for some motorized fun, the Lakeland Recreation areahas over 140 kilometres of shared trails for motorized ATVs andsnowmobiles. Many of these trails have been upgraded so that ATV usedoes not degrade the trails and the landscape. By staying on designatedtrails and practicing responsible operation of ATVs, you will help toensure that Lakeland remains a great place to visit. Maps are available ofthe Lakeland Provincial Park & Recreation Area at many local tourismoffices to help plan your escape into the wild.

A Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Here, you can observe many sought-after resident species, neo-tropical migrants,as well as other species stopping over on their seasonal migrations.

Renowned for bird watching, the park is located on an island accessible via a 2.5km causeway and provides many lookout points, 7 kilometres of walking trailsthroughout the island, and a viewing scope for birding.

The boreal forest is the breeding ground for neo-tropical migrants - that is, birdsthat spend the winter in South America. Since these species are most watchablewhen displaying their mating behaviour, bird watchers will not be disappointedby the vibrant plumage and the numerous bird calls. One attraction of potentialnational significance is the hundreds of loons which can be observed onTouchwood Lake in late summer.

Annual counts are held in May and December, you can join the counting in Lac LaBiche, and find out how many of the species you can see and name.

The Lac La Biche Golf & Country Club features naturalrolling terrain complete with scenic views of the lake.

It contains enough sand traps and water hazards to keep even the mostexperienced golfer on his or her toes. The course is well guarded by treesand bunkers; you will need to use accurate tee shots, as every hole is achallenge with doglegs and blind shots to the greens. With the relaxedatmosphere on the course it is the perfect place for the golf novice, butstill offers a great challenge for more experienced players.

The well appointed pro shop is a great place to stock up on the latest golfgear and book your cart and club rentals. Golf lessons are also availablethrough our resident golf professional. Be sure to save some timeafterwards to grab a delicious snack or meal and cool beverage from thelicensed restaurant after your round. Afterwards, you can sit out on theclubhouse deck and recap you great day as you gaze out at one of themost spectacular vistas in Northern Alberta.

Out-of-town golfers are encouraged to participate in the weekly men’s andwomen’s night activities. Play’n’Stay packages are available through theRamada Hotel, BCMInns, the La Biche Inn, and Parkland Hotels. To book atee time call 780-623-4288 or scan the QR-Code to access the mobile site.

Activities in our winter months take the chill out of the cold season’s air.

For those who love to fish year-round, there are plenty of great spots to go ice fishing; aline, a few hooks and some bait are all you need to catch a keeper! For the land-lovers,the snow covered trails of the Shaw Lake Cross Country Ski circuit offers miles of naturalbeauty. If a little more speed is to your liking, the area’s lakes and back country trails ofLakeland Recreation Area have snowmobile trails for every type of rider.

The winter months also include several community events likeChristmas gatherings, curling bonspiels, hockey tournaments, and the popular Winter Festival of Speed, which takes place inearly March.

During the festival, the Lac La Biche Kinsmen host the On ThePond Minor Hockey Tournament with eight rinks cleared onthe lake for games.

It may seem strange to promote things you can only see in the dark, but like thousands of others, once you've gazed up into a starrynight sky above the Lac La Biche Region, you'll see the light.

If you can get past the fact that this promotion is the exact opposite of one for a tropical beachin the middle of summer at the height of a sunny day, then our Northern Lights await you. Soput away your bathing suit and sunscreen and grab your parka for a winter visit to the Lac LaBiche Region, as the best time to see the Northern Lights is through the colder months. Luckyfor you, one of the best places to see the dancing lights of fantastic colours is the remoteisolation of one of our many lakes.

Stephen Berkley, a star gazing enthusiast and local photographer, says, “The opportunity towitness such a magical event is a treat for all of your senses and would guarantee anunforgettable high mark of your northern adventures."

If the lights aren't shining on the night you are looking for them, why don't you try to countshooting stars or satellites in the night sky. Away from city lights and other metropolitandistractions, the sky looks closer, the stars seem brighter, and it sure looks like there's plentymore of them.
