09:30–10:30 The growing role of micro learning: is bite-sized learning the future of eLearning?

With micro learning, training is delivered as small, bite-sized information which is easily consumed, retained and puts individuals in control of what they are learning. It is specific, targeted and its fast, on demand and always available allowing individuals to browse through topics on their mobile devices and bookmark for later. 12:00–13:00 Why electronic isn’t enough: From campuses to corporate head offices

TraCK 1

eLearning and gamification took off in the mid-2000. With the rise of digital communication, the idea of a measurable, instantaneous and environmental friendly medium was embraced. While technology is more important than ever in today’s modern world, we may have forgotten some human truths along the way. While eLearning might be the most appropriate medium, its execution (including ensuring its consumptions) often leaves a lot to be desired with the stick often being favoured over the carrot.

In this session we will unpack the role of rewards in encouraging action and performance, both in terms of general human behavior as well as in the world of eLearning (and digital platforms). Local and international case studies will be drawn upon to showcase best practice where corporates and institutions have managed to harness the power of real world solutions to drive digital action.

14:00–15:00 Debunking the mobile myth

Mobile learning is attractive to both business and academic learning designers because it offers the convenience of a bring-your-own-device (ByOD) approach and lends itself to trendy micro-learning programme structures. The popularity of learning apps such as Duolingo has inspired many to adapt or retrofit their content and learning programmes to mobile delivery. However, there are a few obstacles in the South African context that include considerations for learning design, socio-economic differences, technology and staff competency. In our research, we explore questions such as:

• Can we learn on a device that conditions us to have a short attention span?• Is there value in a designated and defined learning event?• Who can access mobile learning?• Do we have the technology to author effective mobile learning?• Can we track mobile learning effectively?• How do we on-board facilitators, teachers and lecturers to use mobile learning effectively?• What is our best bet for a successful mobile course design?

SeTa granTS and aCCrediTaTiOn requiremenTS

Many of our delegates enquire about the accreditation of our events. There is a misconception that organisations qualify for SeTA grants only for accredited programmes. This is not correct. The payment of SeTA grants is regulated by the Government Gazette, no. 9867, Vol. 570, 3 December 2012, no. 35940. These regulations clearly state that the SeTAs “must allocate a mandatory grant to a levy paying employer” that has submitted a WSP and ATr by the regulated date, has provided all the information required in the regulated template, and is up to date with skills levy payments. Furthermore, the template in the regulations (Section C: Skills Development) allows employers to include ALL planned training in the report; not only accredited programmes.

TermS and COndiTiOnS OF regiSTraTiOnPayment must be received before the event takes place. kr reserves the right to refuse admission where evidence of payment cannot be shown.
