ROSE AND THE RIME is produced by special arrangement with Bruce Ostler, BRET ADAMS, LTD., 448 W. 44th St. New York, NY 10036. “Rose and the Rime” was originally developed and produced by The House Theatre of

Chicago in association with Hope College

Once a popular lakeside resort town, Radio Falls has been under cover of a bleak winter for as long as a generation can remember. A thick snow covers the town and the outlying region. Roads in and out are inaccessible. Icicles are permanent fixtures on rooftops and windowsills. Some residents still remember the glory of Summer that brought them there in the first place, but then, the Rime Witch came...

The play is performed without an intermission. Strobe, fog and haze are used.

Lewis University’s Theatre Department participates annually in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The KCACTF experience offers student artists the opportunity to showcase their work and receive outside assessment for each production by theatre faculty from other universities. In January of each year, KCACTF festivals showcase selected university productions and offer a variety of activities, including workshops, symposia, and student artists individual recognition through awards and scholarships in playwriting, acting, criticism, directing, and design.

XLIV

The Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education; Dr. Gerald and Paula McNichols Foundation; The Honorable Stuart Bernstein and Wilma E. Bernstein; the Kennedy Center Corporate Fund; and the National Committee for the Performing Arts.

This production is entered in the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF). The aims of this national theater education program are to identify and promote quality in college-level theater production. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels.

Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for inclusion at the KCACTF regional festival and can also be considered for invitation to the KCACTF national festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC in the spring of 2011.

Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS PRODUCTION STAFF

DIRECTOR’S NOTE While attending the annual KCACTF with students a few years back, I was lucky enough to see the Hope College premiere production of Rose and the Rime. It was the “must see” show of the festival and unlike any theatrical event I had ever attended. Simply put, it inspired me in the use of theatre and storytelling. The production concept is that the audience is not simply spectators but active participants in the modern staging of the fairy tale. For example, to achieve this goal the cast will greet the audience members as they arrive and use the entire theatrical space in the storytelling of myth. Fairy tales are en vogue: ABC just premiered its new show, “Once Upon a Time,” and NBC has the fairy-tale themed “Grimm.” This original Midwestern fairytale allows the audience to rediscover their inner youth, as well as find the truth behind fairy tale and myth.

“I think of mythology as the homeland of the muses, the inspirers of art, the inspirers of poetry. To see life as a poem and yourself participating in a poem is what myth does for you.” -Joseph Campbell

“Myth is food. Say grace. Devour it. Share it.” -Naomi Iizuka

“Myths explain things that logic cannot. Why we need myths is the same to me as why we need prayers.” -Migdalia Cruz, playwright

“In re-describing our inherited assumptions, new truths are realized. We enact the play in order to remember the question.” –Anne Bogart, director

“Myth and theatre are inseparable. As theatre artists, we are mythmakers.” -Chay Yew, playwright and director

Enjoy the show! – Jo Slowik
