A Note from Drama Mama:

T he idea of producing this show

came from the ―thinks‖ of a

piano student of mine. Over a year

ago she told me that she had seen

Seussical the Musical and found it to

be exciting. I will admit, I wasn't too

familiar with the show. However, I

was intrigued with the idea of direct-

ing a production that involved Dr.

Seuss‘ characters. I purchased the

soundtrack and instantly feel in love

with ―Alone in the Universe‖ and

―Here on Who.‖ I knew it was going to be a hit when my then two-year old daughter

started singing along too.

So I found myself with the challenge of bringing this beautiful story to life. I

knew right away that I wanted to do something different. Something, as Julianne would

put it, exciting! The first ―think‖ was on costumes. Modern, high fashion, and over the

top. Then came my ―light thinks.‖ Eye catching colors, shining on a cyclorama, almost a

character themselves. Before I knew it, my ―thinks‖ were transforming into the work of

art that is Seussical the Musical.

Heaven knows, I couldn't have done this huge production alone. I owe this

show to many talented people with many great ―thinks‖. My production staff (Beth,

Calypso, Kevin, and Tova): you were gifts from above and made my job so much easier.

I hope we have many more shows to work on together and if I had it my way, you would

never leave! My junior camp counselors (Cassidy, Emma, and Linda): Thank you for

choosing to spend your summer helping out with this show. You three were fantastic!

My costume ladies: WOW! You did amazing work and I am now spoiled with the best

costume crew ever! My cast: I love each and everyone of you. You make me so proud

and I'm honored to work with so much talent. My cast parents: Thank you so much for

being there for every aspect of this show. From assisting with set, to making lunch runs

for a hungry director, your passion for our company does NOT go unnoticed. My par-

ents: Thank you for all that you do. I am lucky to have such supportive parents, willing

to go above and beyond to help me live my dream. My children, Amy and SJ: I promise

that for the rest of the summer, you have your mommy back. And last but not least, my

husband: You are my rock and my best friend. If it wasn't for your support, I wouldn't

have been able to do any of this. I will never be able to truly express how thankful I am

for your love and dedication to Musical Me. I love you.

As you watch our production of Seussical the Musical, I hope you can see how

much love and passion we, at Musical Me Theater, have put into this show. Just as Hor-

ton was dedicated to his mission of saving the Whos, we strove to transform our thinks

into a musical that exceeded the expectations of children's theater.

―Oh, the thinks you can think, when you think about, SEUSS!‖

Dr. Seuss Trivia

1. Dr. Seuss‘s real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel.

2. After being caught at a party during the Prohibition era, Theodor was

forced to continue writing for Dartmouth‘s paper under a pseudonym.

Thus, Dr. Seuss was born.

3. The correct pronunciation of the name rhymed with ―voice‖ rather

than ―goose,‖ but Seuss eventually gave in to the popular pronuncia-

tion.

4. Although he is famous for his children books, he never had any chil-

dren himself.

5. Seuss had a closet next to his studio filled with hats sent to him from

children around the world.

6. ―Green Eggs and Ham‖ was written on a dare, after a publisher bet

him $50 he couldn‘t write a book using only 50 different words.

7. Seuss Landing, an area of Universal Studios theme park made espe-

cially for small children, does not feature a single straight line any-

where in keeping with Seuss‘ vision.

8. ―Cat in the Hat‖ was written to promote literacy, after a 1954 report

on illiteracy concluded that children found books to be boring.

9. Dr. Seuss has an even bigger impact on pop culture than you might

think. The first recorded instance of the word ―nerd‖is in Seuss‘ ‗If I

Ran the Zoo‘ published in 1950.

10. Like many of Seuss‘ books, ‗Horton Hears a Who‘ was not just

about an elephant hearing tiny voices, but an allegory for America‘s

treatment of post-war Japan. The small country needed the support of a

large country to get back on its feet after the devastation of WWII, and

Seuss wrote about Horton‘s plight with the Who after a trip to war torn

Hiroshima. The book was dedicated to a friend of his in Japan.
