On behalf of Coiste Contae Ros Comáin I take thisopportunity to welcome you all to Strokestown for theJunior and Intermediate county finals. Today’s finals markthe end of the premier adult football competitions for 2012we can expect that all four finalists-St Aidans, St Michaels,Michael Glaveys and Oran are determined to capture titlestoday. The Intermediate final is a highly anticipated north v southclash. St Aidans are hoping for a speedy return to seniorranks while St Michaels will be looking for a chance toplay in senior ranks for the first time since 1972. Bothteams will be aware of the achievements of last year’sIntermediate champions Padraig Pearses who contested aclosely fought senior final last Sunday and today’s win-ners will look forward to competing in the county’s pre-mier competition in 2013. The prize of promotion to sen-ior ranks will be a huge incentive to today’s finalist and Iwish both clubs every success. Our Junior final is contested by two sole junior clubs andboth will be keen to atone for recent final losses. Oranwere defeated in the final four years ago while MichaelGlaveys were runners up in 2010. Today’s finalists are twoclubs with a long tradition in the county and victory foreither would be a huge boost to morale in their clubs. Ilook forward to this final as the junior final means so muchto the followers of both clubs. As we come to the end of the club season in Roscommonit is a time for reflection. All our clubs face challenges onand off the field. The costs of running a club continue to bea major headache for club officials. Income streams arebecoming scarcer while sponsors and donors who weremost generous in the past are no longer able to affordfinancial support. As well as this problem the challenge ofthe scourge of emigration has returned to haunt our clubs. The GAA community in the county need to examine howbest we can face these new challenges and cater for ouryoung people by providing competitions that are geared tomeeting the changing financial and demographic situation

that clubs in our county now face.A special thanks is due to the Strokestown club for providingtheir magnificent facilities for today’s finals. Strokestownhave every reason to be proud of the developments here todayand the hosting of two adult finals is for the club a historicoccasion. This is not the first occasion that Strokestown hashosted finals. The most recent one was the 1964 senior finalwhile many of the finals in the early years of the Associationwere played at various venues in Strokestown.I wish both our referees Kevin Naughton and Sean Feeneygood luck today and again I wish to express the Boards thanksto all our referees for their work during 2012. A word of praiseis due to the referees committee under the chairmanship ofHaulie Beirne and referees co-ordinator Peter McHugh fortheir work during the year in referee education and training. Itis very important work and is much appreciated by the Boardand clubs.Once again the CCC has completed the senior, intermediateand junior on schedule despite having to face many chal-lenges. Our clubs should realise the deadlines that have to bemet to meet the demand of provincial competitions and it isnot always possible to accede to requests from clubs concern-ing fixtures. To all officials, team management, gate collectors and every-one involved with the running of our championships a specialthanks for your work. Without the volunteers who give oftheir time and effort tirelessly during the year the GAA wouldbe a much poorer organisation and your work is greatly appre-ciated.I wish all our representatives in the provincial competitionsevery success and I am sure that you all will be worthy repre-sentatives of Roscommon clubs on the provincial stage.I again wish all our finalists good luck today and I hope thatwe have two enjoyable contested by clubs who have a longand proud tradition on the playing fields of Roscommon.

MEET THE MANAGERS & CAPTAINS

MANAGER – Eddie EganCastlerea native Eddie Egan is in his second year as Oran manager. Living in Cloverhill Eddie gainedan interest in his adopted club. He was part of the winning All Ireland Under 21 team in 1978 wherehe played half back & won an Intermediate championship with Castlerea St. Kevins in 1987. He wasat the helm last year to see Oran winning the Under 21 Division 2 Final & many of those players havecame through to the Junior team today. He has management experience in the past with CastlereaSt. Kevins, Tulsk Lord Edwards & Elphin, who he guided to a quarter final replay in 2008 where theylost out narrowly to Clan na nGael. Eddie has his team fine tuned for today’s game & the Oran menwill be well up for the game.

CAPTAIN – Mark GunningMark is an Agricultural Science student who hails from the Ballinaheglish area of the parish. A tricky& tenacious player Mark is a fine model for the modern half back cutting off supply to the oppositionforwards and often travels up the field to kick a score. Mark first claimed silverware in 2001 whenhe was part of a winning u-12 team & made his way up the grades showing great commitment & wasa prominent player on the winning 2008, 2010 & 2011 junior & U-21 teams. He also plays hurling &was a winner of an U-21 All Ireland B Hurling medal this year. The Gunning family have a great inter-est in GAA & have had links to Oran football down through the years. In 1970’s when training facil-ities were at a minimum, Sonny Gunning’s field (Mark’s grandfather) was the venue where the Oranmen of the ‘70’s often perfected their skill. Mark’s two brothers, Niall & Jack, also play for Oran, withhis sister Caroline on the Roscommon Under 14 team this year.

MANAGER – Stephen Healy Stephen hails from Charlestown in County Mayo and he is one of the excellent teachers that makeup the staff of Gorthaganny National School. Stephen had great success with his own club,Charlestown when he led them to Mayo and Connacht Championship glory in 2001. Stephen hasalso inter-county experience when he was a selector for the Mayo Minors during Ray Dempsey’stenure as manager. Stephen is a shrewd observer of the game and in his few months with Glaveys he has earned therespect of all the lads. He is very thorough in all that he does and training sessions are always wellplanned in advance. He is a great motivator and along with his selector Ciaran Grogan they hopeto ensure that Glaveys will be playing Intermediate championship in 2013. Michael Glaveys would also like to take this opportunity to thank Padraig O’Malley, who was involvedearlier in the year; Ruairi Comer, who keeps the vital statistics in all the games and their PhysioJennifer Keadin.

CAPTAIN – Derek WaldronDerek hails from Granlahan, that hotbed of football in Roscommon and one of the three pillars thatmake up the Michael Glaveys club along with Ballinlough and Cloonfad respectively. Derek is a pas-sionate Glaveys man who wears his heart on his sleeve and has Michael Glaveys blood coursingthrough his veins. He`s a leader in the true sense of the word and after a injury hit start to the sea-son which saw him miss a good portion of the early league games he resumed full fitness aroundmid-April and has been consistency personified in the relatively new role of midfield which he hasmade his own on the back of some stellar performances in both the league and championship. He`sa real motivating force in the dressingroom and puts his body on the line every time he puts on thatGlaveys jersey. He`ll be a key presence for Glaveys today in the engine room that is midfield and ifspirit and tenacity can carry Glaveys over the line then Derek will be firmly at the wheel and therewill be no prouder man in Strokestown today than Derek as he leads his men into battle on thebiggest and most important occasion of all county final day.

HISTORY OF ORAN FOOTBALL CLUBThe Oran GAA Football Club was formed between the years of 1890 & 1900 following the establish-ment of the Association making it one of the oldest clubs in Roscommon. It was initially calledDonamon & kept this name right up to the early 1940s when Oran became its official title. Duringthe 1940s the Farragher Monastery also had a football team who eventually joined up with Oranboosting numbers. This mid Roscommon club has a very proud footballing tradition & Oran claimed their first senior titlein 1918. The last Junior Title was won in 1973 when, after the initial fixture being cancelled due tologged pitch, a fine bunch of men bridged a 41 year gap defeating Ballinameen by single point HydePark. They built on this in 1974 to claim the Intermediate Title & continued to compete well at thislevel. In 1997 the Intermediate Title came back to Oran again with victory over Ballinameen in HydePark. A hat trick secured victory for Oran, final score line 3-9 to 0-9. Ivan Conneely, a panel mem-ber today, lined out on that 1997 winning team. It’s been 4 years since Oran last featured in a JuniorFinal, however, have been making progress since then winning the Tansey Cup in 2010 & claimingU-21 titles in 2009 & 2011 & were finalist in 2010. Great work has been done in our Minor Club downthrough the years to nurture & develop some fine players to compete at adult level with many fea-turing on county panels & hopefully the threat of emigration will not hinder us as we hope to build forthe future. Today we have a mix of youth & experience as we hope to capture just the third Junior Title in thehistory of the Club.We wish the team & management the very best of luck today & thank all our players, officials, spon-sors & supporters who are so important all year long.

MICHAEL GLAVEYS GAA CLUB -

A BRIEF HISTORYServing Ballinlough, Cloonfad, Granlahan and some families from Gorthaganny, MichaelGlaveys is seen as one of the County’s traditional clubs despite its rather late formationin 1956. The club was formed in January 1956 in Gorthaganny Hall by Peadar Earley. Our first title was the U-15 County Championship back in 1963. We dominated theIntermediate ranks in the early seventies when we won the league in 1970, ‘71 and ’72and the Intermediate championship in ’70 and ’72. Glaveys originally covered a largearea taking in two Parishes – Loughglynn and Kiltullagh but due to the vast geographicalarea, the Loughglynn Parish decided to form their own club, Eire Óg in 1984. The officialopening of the Peadar Earley Memorial Park took place on Sunday May 18th 1986. Theclub won the intermediate championship and league in 1985. They managed to stay inthe senior grade for twenty years and they reached their first senior final in 1996 but werebeaten by Clan na nGael. The club’s adult team were relegated in 2005 back to the inter-mediate ranks and then were relegated to junior championship in 2009. We gained pro-motion to the Division Two League in autumn 2011 and finished in a very credible thirdplace this year. We have had a lot of success with both our under-age girls and boy’steams over the last few years so the future for the club is very bright. Famous Players - Over the years some wonderful players have pulled on the MichaelGlaveys jersey – Kevin Winston, John Lynch, Dermot Earley R.I.P., Gerry Fitzmaurice,Paul Earley, Conor Connelly, Iain Daly, Eugene Coggins, Ciaran Grogan, JamesHeneghan and in more recent times Cormac Costello, Stuart Daly, Eugene Stritch, Darren& Shane O’Malley, Sonny Mc Anulty and Conor Hussey – all have represented their cluband county proudly. For over fifty years, we have had many wonderful days of success and achievement andmany difficult days where we failed at the final hurdle or didn’t rise to the first one at allbut there is no doubt that “Glaveys” has been established as a great club on and off thefield . I hope that all involved with the club are proud to be part of it and that we can allwork together to make it even better in the next few years.

GAA SOCIAL INITIATIVEThe GAA Social Initiative arose as a result of former PresidentMary McAleese and her husband, Martin, noticing an absence ofolder men in attendance at official functions during their many vis-its to local communities over the years. The President came to theconclusion that many men, because of the changing patterns of

life, were falling through cracks in the system and either risking or already experi-encing isolation and loneliness. Following further discussions they extended an invi-tation to the GAA to use it's network to engage older men who were not active inlocal community life and the pilot programme for the GAA Social Initiative was born.

The aim of the initiative is simple: to offer a social outlet that is safe and wel-coming and that provides a route into, and a place in, the community. So far, 13clubs in the county have participated in the programme: St. Brigids, St. Dominics,St. Croans, Tulsk Lord Edwards, Roscommon Gaels, Éire Óg, Michael Glaveys, St.Josephs, St. Michaels, Kilglass Gaels, Padraig Pearses, Boyle and Fuerty. Theefforts of all the Clubs are greatly appreciated by those involved and they havegiven many people a new social outlet.

A good example of the Social Initiative in action would be the activities ofSt Josephs. They began last November by organising a Table Quiz as a fundraiserwith about one hundred and fifty people attending. They linked with existing com-munity groups in Kilteevan such as Kilteevan Community Development, CommunityAlert and Kilteevan Cycling Club and arising from this, a trip to Croke Park Stadiumand the Dermot Earley Exhibition at the GAA Museum was undertaken as the firstsocial outing. The group consisted of former club players and officials, representa-tives from the local community groups and community members and all had a veryenjoyable time.

While the Social Initiative retains a focus on men in the community, it is notexclusive and clubs are encouraged to vary the type of activity they organise toinclude in their social programme events to which the entire community can be invit-ed. Social events and activities should also be open to those in the community whoare not GAA members, as the example from St. Josephs demonstrates. Furtherexamples of club activities can be seen in the Social Initiative Newsletters which canbe viewed at www.gaa.ie/socialinitiative.

Roscommon GAA Social Initiative Officer, Seán Mannion, will hold a meet-ing later this month and all Clubs are encouraged to attend and learn more aboutthe Scheme and how they can get involved. Details will be published in the localmedia nearer the time or alternatively, you can contact Seán any time on 086 8388756 or [email protected] Colin Regan, the GAA Community & Health Promotion Manager, [email protected]

ST AIDAN'S GAA CLUB - A BRIEF HISTORYSt Aidan's GAA Club was founded in 1956 as a result of the amalgamation of KevinBarry's and Ballyforan Clubs. A number of meetings were held between representativesof both clubs before an agreement was reached. At the time of the amalgamation KevinBarry's had a new set of Blue and Yellow Jerseys. Ballyforan had a well worn Red andwhite set but had £8 in funds. Blue and Yellow were agreed as the St Aidan's coloursand an account was opened with a balance of £8. The late James Fallon and SonnyKenny were elected first Chairperson and Secretary respectively.

The Club contested a number of South finals before winning the County JuniorChampionship in 1966. We were graded Senior until we opted to play in the newlyformed Intermediate competition in 1972 and we won the Intermediate title in 1975.Although we dropped to Intermediate this time last year we are hoping for an evenshorter stay on this occasion.

Overall the Club has won three Intermediate Titles, one O'Rourke Cup, Leo KennyConnacht League Cup, All County League, 3 x O'Gara Cups, 2 x County Junior, Under21, 2 x Minor, 4 x Under 16, 4 x Under 14, One Connacht Under 14 Feile Peil nÓg in1987, 3 x Under 12 and the Lough Rea Under 10 tournament.

HISTORY OF ST. MICHAEL’S GAA CLUBSt Michael’s GAA Club is based in the Parish of Ardcarne and also takes in the area of

Corrigeenroe, which is the Roscommon part of the Aughanagh Parish. Records show that in the late part of the nineteenth century, the GAA was strong within the Club’sboundary, with teams registered in Cootehall, Crossna, Ballyfermoyle and Corrigeenroe.

In 1941, Cootehall and Crossna amalgamated to form St Michael’s, with Corrigeenroe andDrumboylan joining later. The new team qualified for the County Junior Final in 1941, and defeatedSt Patrick’s, only for St Patrick’s to be awarded the Title on an objection. The first Title won by StMichael’s was the 1951 Northern Junior League and this was followed by the 1953 Northern JuniorChampionship. We were defeated by Kilteevan in the County Final, but were awarded the matchafter it was discovered that Kilteevan fielded illegal players.

St. Michaels played Senior Football in 1954 and 1955 (no Intermediate Grade then) andin 1956 and 57 we joined with St Ronans to form a Senior team, known as Paddy Morans.Unfortunately “Paddy Morans” were defeated in both years by Elphin; on route to completing theirhistoric three-in-a-row. St Michael’s also reached the 1956 and 1958 Junior County Finals.

The 1960’s saw us win many Juveniles Titles and the 1970’s were our most successfulspell; winning a County Intermediate Title in 1971, County Junior Titles in 1970 and 78, and theCurley Cup in 1975. The Club were also defeated in the 1975 County Intermediate Final. OurJuveniles won four County Titles in six years between 1978 and 83 and in 1988 we reached theCounty Junior Final and won the Tansey Cup.

The Club suffered heartbreaking defeats in the 1991 County U21 Final and 1992 CountyJunior Final but we returned to the Intermediate ranks by winning the Junior title in 1993, after areplay. We came close to moving to Senior in 1999 but suffered defeat in the County Final.

The new century saw us take part in RTE’s Celebrity Bainisteoir in 2009 and were defeat-ed by Rockwell Rovers of Tipperary. The Club’s Juveniles teams have recorded some notable wins at various levels in recent times andlast year our Junior B team won the Northern and County Championships.

Last year saw a revival of Ladies Football at Under 12 level and this team reached aCounty Shield Final. Today the Club fields three adult teams (Intermediate, Junior and Under 21) andnine underage teams (from Under 6 to Minor, and an U12 Ladies team).

The Club has also had great success in Scór, winning an All-Ireland Title in 1973,Connacht Titles in 1973, 1974,1977 and 1983 and many County Titles over the years. In recent yearsScór has also been revived with entries in all grades.

Finally, when St Michaels is mentioned, the one name that is always associated with theClub is the late Jim Henry (RIP), who served as Club Secretary for over fifty years. We know thattoday Jim is looking down, one proud St Michael’s Man.

A word from the Chairperson of St Michael’s GAA ClubSt. Michaels are thrilled to be back in the County Intermediate Football Final. Our players have putin a huge effort this year and on behalf of everyone in our Club I hope they get their reward. I wouldalso like to acknowledge the input of our management team; Dermot Lane, Pat Simon, PadraigMcShera, Kieran McDermott and Paul Duignan. The success of under-age teams in recent years hashad a big knock on effect on today's Intermediate team. A big thank you to all our coaches and vol-unteers, who give of their time in ensuring our under-age continues to flourish. Thank you to our mainsponsor Joe Simon Hardware and all our sponsors and supporters throughout the Club; your contin-ued support is greatly appreciated.I look forward to a good sporting game with St Aidan’s, with hopefully the Jimmy Murray Cup mak-ing it’s first visit to our Club.
