If the "Ideal" bar (red) in any 1/3 Octave exceeds the "Actual" bar (blue) in the same 1/3 octave, the room is "non-ideal". If this is the case, alternate room dimensions are usually the best course of action. Since in many cases altering the room dimensions is not doable, bass traps should be considered. Consider each of the following when recommending bass traps:
(a) For tangential modes above 80 Hz and axial modes above 100 Hz, corner traps should be used in each vertical corner as much as possible.
(b) For axial modes below 100 Hz, either broadband absorbers, properly designed Helmholtz resonators or properly designed diaphragmatic absorbers should be used, in general, at the center of the wall*.
(c) For tangential modes below 80 Hz, broadband traps, Helmholtz or diaphragmatic absorbers can also be used, but placement is dependent on the distribution of the mode.*The important wall for treatment is the opposite wall to the wall indicated by the mode number. For example, an absorber for the (x,0,0) mode should be most effective when placed at the center of the "y" wall.
Modes that coincide (I.e., a "2" or more is indicated on the Relative Mode Strength graph at the modal frequency) are usually only considered problematic if the 1/3-octave band in which the frequency falls has a total modal density equal to or less than 5.
Transition/Diffusive Region
If the "Ideal" bar does exceed the "Actual" bar in any given 1/3-octave band, the problem modes will usually be those occurring in the 1/3 octave bands that are lower than the violating band. I.e., if the "Ideal" bar at 100 Hz exceeds the "Actual" bar, the modes at 80 Hz and below are likely to give very perceptible problems in the room.
