8 Matches Unbeaten! Tuesday’s 5-0 triumph in the League Cup over Amesbury Town was Romsey’s 8th game without defeat! This run includes an unprecedented 7 wins and draw including wins over established Premier Division sides like Fareham and Hamworthy.

By Cam Melling

5-0 Win against Amesbury Romsey recorded a fantastic 5-0 win over Division One side Amesbury Town on Tuesday to progress into the 3rd round of the League Cup. Two goals from top goalscorer Simon De’ath and then one each from Macs Sampays, Ryan Long and Chalky White meant that Romsey are still in the third round of two cup competitions now—the League Cup and the Hampshire Senior Cup. The third round draw for the League Cup has yet to be completed but Romsey will have to travel to New Milton for the third round of the Hamp-shire Senior Cup.

2-1 Win against Fareham Town Our last league outing was at home last Saturday to Fareham Town where we won 2-1 against a strong and battling opposition. An own goal gave Romsey the lead into half time but shortly after Fareham had equalised. However, seconds later Chris Hall had given Romsey the lead for the second time and final time as we continued our march up the league table.

The present club was formed in 1990 when Alton’s two senior clubs, Alton Town and Bass Alton, amalgamated. Alton Town had been fantastically successful, winning everything in Hampshire in the period from 1948 to 1956 including Hampshire leagues Divisions 3, 2 & 1 (1948, 1949 & 1958), the Hampshire Intermediate Cup in 1949, the Russell Cotes Cup in 1949 and the Hampshire Senior Cup in 1958. Alton Town first joined the Hampshire League in 1947 and won Division 3 East in their first season. More success followed with the Division 2 title in 1948/49 and they also won the Russell Cotes Cup and Hamp-shire Intermediate Cup that year. Although they dropped to Division 2 for one season in 1954/55, they bounced back immediately and went on to win both the Division 1 championship and the Hampshire Senior Cup in 1957/58. They stayed in Division 1 until they left in 1973 to join the Athenian League Divi-sion 2 which they won in their first year. After an initial period of success in that league the Club found itself unable to compete and dropped down to the Combined Counties League before returning to the Hampshire League in 1984, starting at the bottom in Division 3. They found themselves in Division 2 in 1986/87 by dint if winning the Division 2 title for the third time. Bass Alton started life as Courage & Company (Alton) FC and joined the Hampshire League in 1928/29. The following year they were in Division 2 and then won promotion to Division 1 where they stayed until being relegated to Division 2 in 1938/39, just before the club was disbanded for the War. Courage rejoined the North Hants division briefly in 1954/55 before beginning their longest spell in the County League in 1972/73 when they entered Division 4. Promoted to Division 3 in 1975, they only lasted two years before dropping to Division 4 again. In 1979/80 the Club changed its name to Bass Alton FC and its fortunes changed with the name as they won promotion in successive years to Division 3 in 1979/80, to Division 2 in 1980/81 and to Divi-sion 1 as Division 2 runners-up and the end of the 1982/83 season after a 45-year absence. Since the amalgamation, the Club has played in the Hampshire League and achieved pro-motion to the Wessex League by topping the Premier Division in 2002.

This weekend’s opposition is the much improved Alton Town. Alton cur-rently rest in 11th position having played a less games than the majority of teams in the league. Last season’s results: 1-1 & 1-0 to Romsey

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920’s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970’s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80’s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary’s.

Tuesday Review (01/11/11)

In the Premier Division on Tuesday night, ALRESFORD TOWN made it six points from six with a 3-2 home win against

FAREHAM TOWN. Jamil Saleh put the hosts ahead after ten minutes with a 25-yard looping effort. Ashley Tattersall

levelled the scores after outpacing the defence on 31 minutes. However, Alresford went back ahead shortly after-

wards when Saleh bagged his second from close range. Steve Llewellyn made it three with a header from a Dean Cole

free kick and although Sam Doswell scored a header with ten minutes left for Fareham, Alresford held on. Elsewhere,

Louis Bell Junior returned to his former club and netted twice against his Dad, Louis Bell Senior's side, in

HORNDEAN's 5-0 win at BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY. Dave Carter's men also had Dan Martin on the scoresheet and Na-

than Paxton bagged a brace. NEW MILTON TOWN made it four points from six on the Isle-of-Wight this week with a 3-1

away win at BRADING TOWN. Ian Proctor found the net as did Nick Howes and winger Tom Donaldson scored a diving

header. Striker Alex Baldacchino also hit the post for the visitors whilst the hosts' only goal was an own goal in stop-

page time. CHRISTCHURCH won 3-2 at home to TOTTON & ELING. The scorers for the hosts were Shaun Brian after

just a minute, Ben Osborne (pen) and James Burden in the second half. Craig Feeney scored a first-half brace and at

one point had put the Millers 2-1 ahead, but Christchurch responded and turned the game around with Burden's sec-

ond half winner. Jack Slade and Neil Williams were both on target for BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS as they drew

2-2 at HAYLING UNITED. The Humbugs also finished the game with ten men against their Wiltshire counterparts hav-

ing had a man sent off. LYMINGTON TOWN ran out 4-1 winners at home to managerless LAVERSTOCK & FORD. New

signing Lloyd Foot scored for Town as did joint manager, Matt Hussey. Dan Fox and Chris Marwood were both also on
