Romsey Town 2-0 Rozel Rovers (Hampshire Senior Cup) By JOHN GORMAN at the Bypass Ground Rozel Rovers from Jersey made their second trip to the mainland in this season's Hamp-shire Senior Cup, but having been victorious at Brading in the first round they found Romsey too strong at the By-Pass ground and went down by two goals to nil, a result that in the end was a true reflection of the afternoon. The home side started the brighter with Ryan Long having a shot blocked - appeals for a penalty were rightly turned down - and in the next attack visiting goalkeeper James Keating dropped a Macs Sampay cross and needed treatment after re-claiming the loose ball from a forest of feet. Rozel re-sponded with a superb Steve Wilkinson pass inside the full back only for Aaron Maynard to shoot rather weakly into the side netting and when Wilkinson then sent Scott Healy clear the winger rounded the keeper only to see his shot from an acute angle blocked at the near post by Luke Baker. Not surprisingly after the bright opening the first goal came fairly quickly, just inside the quarter hour mark, when Simon De'Ath and Ryan Long combined neatly on the left and the latter ‘s shot flew past Keating and into the far corner. Dave Ibbotson was just wide for the visitors but Romsey were looking the more threatening with Ryan Long seeing another effort blocked by the keeper's legs and Baker's shot being turned round the post. The ever dangerous Wilkinson was just too high with a lob and then sent Jack Gibbs clear forcing Romsey goalkeeper Matt Brown to go down at the forward's feet to save before Romsey doubled their lead in the 32nd minute. Chris Hall burst into the area in pursuit of a De'Ath through ball, the challenge was mis-timed and Ryan Long coolly slotted home the resultant penalty. Jake Long's free kick from the corner of the area was well saved by Keating and after persistence by Maynard had created a chance for Healy which was blocked the half ended with Jake Long again being acrobatically denied by Keating. Keating started the second half as he had finished the first, superbly tipping a Baker header round the post and then claiming a corner in a crowded six yard box. It was a strong start by the home side and after Ryan Long was inches too high Keating held a Sampays shot at the second attempt. Rozel's efforts to push themselves forward were too often foiled by the offside flag though Brown had to get down smartly to deny Tom McAlister when the flag did stay down. Ryan Long was stopped by a superb challenge by Rozel skipper Carl Scott, a powerful figure in the visiting defence all afternoon, and after Wilkinson had been stopped by weight of numbers a quick Romsey break ended with Ryan Long shooting inches wide. Brown confidently held a difficult looking cross and a neat Romsey move ended with Sampays's cross being missed by friend and foe alike as it flew through the six yard box. Both sides were making full use of their substitutes with Rozel's Andy McCabe receiving a long lec-ture for dissent almost as soon as he entered the field before Scott moved forward to send a header wide from a corner. Rozel were now throwing caution to the wind as they attempted to rescue the tie and the home side rather wasted a breakaway when the at-tackers well outnumbered the defence. Rozel's McAlister collected the only caution of a splendidly contested game and the visitors were denied the goal they perhaps deserved when Healy fastened on to a long throw but slid the ball past Brown and the outside of the far post in what was the last goal scoring chance of the ninety minutes.

A team was formed in the 1890’s called Hamworthy St Mi-chael’s, winning their first trophy the Whitehead Minor Cup in season 1899-1900. Hamworthy Football Club was formed in 1926, and moved to the present ground formally known as the Nursery Ground in 1950. Hamworthy Football Club amalgamated with Trinidad Old Boys at the start of the 1971-1972 season to form Hamworthy United Football Club as it is known today. Hamworthy United have had great success at all levels over the years in various competitions, and hold the record of having been the only team to have played in every season of the Dorset Combination League from its for-mation, until it finished to become the Dorset Premier League at the end of the 2001-2002 season. After winning the League two years running they were promoted in the 2004-2005 sea-son to the Wessex League Division 1, winning the Wessex League Cup in their first season.

Today’s opposition is top of the table side Hamworthy United. Hamworthy are in good form and are enjoying a good start to the season so it is sure to be a tough test for Romsey today. Hamworthy did the double over Romsey last year. Last year’s results: 3-1 & 4-2 to Hamworthy

Romsey Town: A brief history The history of Romsey Town Football Club goes back to 1886 when a meeting took place at the Town Hall to consider the desirability of forming a football club in the town.

In the season 1889/90 they played their football at Alma Road, playing in local football. By the 1920’s they had gained entry into the Hampshire League and played their games at Priestlands which is now Romsey School. They had great success and won the Hampshire Intermediate Cup for the first time.

After the Second World War Romsey Town went on to produce some of their best attacking sides. In 1949 they reached the 2nd Round of the F.A. Cup and the final of the Hampshire Senior Cup in the same season. By 1955-56 they moved to their current home – the Bypass Ground – however they were relegated and the club fell into decline.

By the 1970’s the club started to climb out of the doldrums of lower league football and in 1974-75 won the Hampshire League Division 4 title. By the late 80’s Romsey had reached the Hampshire League Division 1 and in 1990 became the second club (after Bashley) to win the Wessex League title.

In the years to follow the club could not maintain the high standards and went into another decline until re-cently. In 2007 the club finished 3rd in Division 1 of the Wessex League and gained promotion to the Premier Division. After a good start to the 2007-08 campaign, the side suffered a poor second half of the season and finished 18th. The reserves finished 4th in Combination 2 and were beaten finalists in the Southampton Sen-ior Cup Final at St Mary’s.

Ryan Long 2-0 Opposition Romsey have won their last two games 2-0 with both goals in each game coming from Ryan Long. Ryan know has eight goals this season with three in the cup and 5 in the league. First came Jersey opposition in the form of Rozel Rovers in the second round of the Hampshire Senior Cup. Romsey were two up in the first half following two goals from the Long including a lovely curling strike from the corner of the box. The game was all but over at half time and Romsey pro-fessionally saw out the second half without any trouble. The second was on Wednesday night away on the Isle of Wight to New-port. Again Romsey won 2-0 with Ryan grabbing another brace. A good win for Romsey and we are now in 10th place.

Hamworthy Today we face Hamworthy United who are currently sitting on top of the Wessex League. Although the Hammers are top they have played 12 games in the league so far which is the same as us and a lot more then a lot of the other teams in the league. However, it is still set to be a difficult game but we’re back in form and so is Ryan so we’re more than capable of pulling off an upset!

Dean Cole and Dan Strange for the Magpies but it wasn't enough for them to avoid defeat. ALTON TOWN ran out 5-0 winners at home to NEW MILTON TOWN. A crowd of 45 at Vicarage Road witnessed BRADING TOWN impressively beat HAYLING UNITED 4-0. Giancarlo Giancovich bagged a brace and there were also goals by Josh Appell and substitute, Scott Saunders. In Division One, COWES SPORTS won 3-0 away at HYTHE & DIBDEN and STOCKBRIDGE were once again on the wrong end of a seven-goal thriller when they lost 4-3 at PEWSEY VALE. AMESBURY TOWN were knocked out of the cup, 5-4 on penalties against Westbury United after a 0-0 draw after extra time. Saturday Division One Review (08/10/11) Gareth Bricknell and James Wykes both scored as COWES SPORTS beat UNITED SERVICES PORTS-MOUTH 2-0 at Westwood Park. Michael Mead was on target for BROCKENHURST as they drew 1-1 away to EAST COWES VICS. Substitute Brett Denham put WHITCHURCH UNITED ahead at FLEET SPURS and their lead was doubled by that same man again to make the final score 2-0 at Kennels Lane to United. A Callum Coker brace wasn't enough for PETERSFIELD TOWN as they were beaten 4-2 at home by AFC PORTCHESTER. RINGWOOD TOWN overtuned a three goal deficit to win 4-3 at home to STOCKBRIDGE. All the goals came in the first 19 minutes from Ollie Yates, Keith Harrison and Steve Witt. Alex Eley reduced the arrears before a penalty was awarded on 74 minutes. 'Keeper, Alan Ralph was dismissed for a second bookable offence and Dan Morrell scored from the penalty spot past the stand-in goalkeeper, Steve Witt. Not longer afterwards and it was all square when Mark Lavelle's tame effort from the edge of the box squirmed underneath Witt and the turnaround was complete when Dan Morrell's header looped into the back of the net. Stand-in goalkeeper, Steve Witt got injured during the action surrounding the winning goal and was then replaced by a second stand-in stopper, this time Jack Hutchings. Hutchings made excellent saves to deny Morrell and Stuart Brown and to compound the visitors' misery, Gavin Burgess was dismissed for two cautions so Stockbridge finished the game with nine men. TEAM SOLENT won 2-1 at 'home' to ANDOVER NEW STREET. The students' home is tem-porarily the Silverlake Stadium, home of Eastleigh Football Club, while the finishing touches are being made to their new ground. Scott Kinge headed the hosts into the lead from a Will Tickle cross and Leo Churms doubled Solent's lead shortly before half-time from a free kick. Bobby Swayne scored a penalty on 49 minutes to reduce the arrears, but the Students held out for all three points. VERWOOD TOWN comprehensively beat HYTHE & DIBDEN 5-0 at Potterne Park. The visitors scored an own goal early on but Town took real control in the second half. Gajic scored just 30 seconds after the restart and Mike Haskell bagged a brace and Dear also scored to secure a comfortable win for the Dorset side.

Saturday Premier Division Review (08/10/11) ALTON TOWN drew 1-1 at home to BEMERTON HEATH HARLEQUINS in the Premier Division on Satur-day. Elsewhere, BLACKFIELD & LANGLEY came from behind to win 5-1 at home to DOWNTON. Benja-min Smith had put the visitors in the lead, but goals from Warren Hunt, Scott Sampson, Tom Settle and a brace from Gavin Spurway gave the home side all three points. Elsewhere on the Waterside, FAWLEY AFC lost 3-2 at home to HAMWORTHY UNITED. FAREHAM TOWN came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at HAYLING UNITED. Robert Pittman pulled a goal back for the visitors and deep into added on time, Ashley Tattersall grabbed the equalising goal. A solitary Alex Baldacchino goal was enough to earn NEW MILTON TOWN a 1-0 away win at HORNDEAN. LYMINGTON TOWN drew 2-2 at home to BRADING TOWN. Chris Marwood and Gareth Byres were on target for the hosts whilst Giancarlo Giancovich and Scott Saunders were on target for the visitors. A Dave Ewen brace gave BOURNEMOUTH POPPIES vic-tory as they came from behind to win 2-1 at MONEYFIELDS. Rackley had put the hosts ahead. NEW-PORT (IOW) beat ALRESFORD TOWN 4-1 at St. George's Park. Michael McEnery scored the only goal for the visitors. Jared Wetherick, a reserve team player, made his first for Newport's first team and scored a hat-trick in the demolition of the Magpies. GE HAMBLE raced into a three goal but ran out 3-2 winners at TOTTON AND ELING. Jamie Musselwhite, Ashley Jarvis and Dan Turner all scored for the Planemakers. Craig Feeney scored a brace for the hosts but it wasn't enough for them to avoid defeat. WINCHESTER CITY reached the Premier Division summit with a 4-2 home win against fellow title chal-lengers, CHRISTCHURCH. The hosts went ahead after 12 minutes when Charlie Smeeton crossed for Chris Mason to head home emphatically. The lead, however, was shortlived, when Sam Griffin squeezed an effort in from the edge of the box. City regained the lead almost instantly when Alex Przespolewski scored from the penalty spot after Smeeton had been fouled. Then just minutes before half-time, ex Southampton frontman, Jamie White, stole the show with two excellent goals. Christ-church threatened a comeback with a goal just a minute after half time through Ben Osborne, but this failed to materialise and City went top. Clubs of the Month Christchurch have won the club of the month award for the Premier Division and Verwood Town have won the respective award for Division One.
