The Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time – October 16, 2016
Learning, Living and Sharing the Good News
Roman Catholic Church
NEXT WEEKS GOSPEL LUKE 18:9-14
Jesus addressed this parable to those
who were convinced of their own
righteousness and despised everyone
else. “Two people went up to the temple
area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the
other was a tax collector. The Pharisee
took up his position and spoke this
prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you
that I am not like the rest of humanity --
greedy, dishonest, adulterous -- or even
like this tax collector. I fast twice a
week, and I pay tithes on my whole
income.’ But the tax collector stood off
at a distance and would not even raise
his eyes to heaven but beat his breast
and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a
sinner.’ I tell you, the latter went home
justified, not the former; for whoever
exalts himself will be humbled, and the
one who humbles himself will be
exalted.”
Led by one of our finest volunteer teachers, faith
formation students offering contributions to Stand
Down! Proof that teaching the faith is not just
about knowledge ... but humble service! Read next
week's Gospel if you need another reminder.

My Dear Parishioners,
Today’s Gospel
about the widow
who is so persistent
in her prayer isn’t an invitation to ask
God for what we want and expect it to
be answered. Rather, it is an
opportunity to recognize that by
placing our trust in God, through
prayer, things will work out. It’s
about understanding that God doesn’t
follow the rules of our current world;
that “his ways are above our ways”.
It’s about letting go of our control and
letting God take charge of our lives.
I hope to see all of you at our parish
picnic on Oct 23rd. The weather
should be pleasantly cool by then, the
food will be great, the music awesome
and as we always say afterward, “A
good time was had by all”. Tickets
are only $3.00 for adults, children 3
and under are free. We ask you bring
a dish to pass.
Thank you to our Ladies Guild for
their baby shower to benefit the
clients of Solve. We are grateful to an
organization that supports mothers
who choose life, and that is a core
belief when we celebrate baptisms in
the parish, no matter the
circumstances.
God bless you,
Fr. Mike

Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time
“I lift up my eyes toward the mountains; where shall help come
to me? My help is from the Lord who made heaven and earth.”
From Psalm 121
This is the first of two parables that Jesus tells in Luke 18 about
prayer. This first parable is a lesson in persistence in prayer.
Next Sunday's parable will address attitude in prayer. At first,
this parable might seem to show prayer as “nagging” God for what
we want … that is NOT the point. God is nothing like the judge in
the parable, worn down by requests and coerced to respond. As
we hear the description of the judge being corrupt and unjust, we
know God is neither of these things. That helps us to understand
Jesus’ message - if even an unjust judge responds to the
persistence of the widow, how much more will God listen to our
prayers. God really wants to hear our needs - and always wants to
respond with generous, unconditional love. Never give up on Him.
He never gives up on us!
The sacrament of Baptism is a Grace …
beginning the path to faith & all other
sacraments. It is a privilege to help
parents, grandparents and godparents
prepare for this gift. Our next preparation
session is THIS Wednesday October
19th at 6:30PM in the parish hall.
SAVE THE DATE: NEXT SUNDAY OCTOBER 23rd! We invite families to participate in the many fun
