General Information This is The Traveller newsletter. It is published twice a year. The Traveller describes several trips around the world which are offered by ROM Travel. This is Volume 53, published in the Spring of 2019. ROM Travel is organized by the Royal Ontario Museum’s Department of Museum Volunteers to provide support for the museum. These trips are available exclusively to members of the Royal Ontario Museum.
The first trip is to Argentina. This trip will take place in March, 2020. Information about this Destination Become enchanted with Buenos Aires, “the Paris of South America”. The city combines European grandeur with Latin passion. Tour the more traditional, and the most trendy, neighbourhoods that fascinate with their cosmopolitan atmosphere and individual personality. Visit art galleries, museums, the opera house, the birthplace of tango and navigate the Parana River delta. Discover a variety of landscapes in Patagonia, at the southern tip of South America. In Ushuaia, take the “Train to the End of the World”. Navigate the Beagle Channel observing penguins, sea lions and bird colonies. Dive into the rich local seafood.
At El Calafate, on the shores of Lake Argentino, view the awe-inspiring Perito Moreno, Upsala and Spegazzini Glaciers in Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the gorgeous Lake District, surrounded by the Andes Mountains, enjoy the views at Bariloche and San Martin. At Neuquen, discover the Earth’s largest dinosaurs with ROM palaeontologist Dr. David Evans. Enjoy marvellous cuisine, heady wines and tango culture! The second trip is to the island of Sicily in Italy. This trip will take place from May 4 through May 15, 2020. Information about this Destination Join Dr. Trinity Jackman, classical historian and archaeologist, on a journey to Sicily, home to some of Europe’s most important ancient Greek sites, Europe’s most active volcano and some of Italy’s tastiest food. Midway between Africa and Europe in the middle of the Mediterranean, Sicily has been ruled by Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans and Spaniards, all of whom have left their mark. The Cathedral of Monreale, built to showcase the power of the Norman King William II and famous for its mosaics, is considered one of Sicily’s greatest art treasures. Just off the salt flats on the west coast lies the little island of Mozia with its layers of history to be found in the Carthaginian and Roman ruins. To the south is Agrigento, historically one of the richest Greek colonies, with its “Valley of the Temples”, the largest and best-preserved collection of ancient Greek buildings outside of Greece.
Taormina, a spectacular resort city with its dramatically situated Greco-Roman theatre, perches high above the crystal-clear blue sea as Mt. Etna looms in the distance. In addition to its historical and artistic treasures, Sicily offers varied dramatic landscapes from the formidable stark hills of the interior, the vibrant greens of farmed valleys, to the turquoise waters and sandy beaches of the coast. The third trip is to the High Arctic of Canada and Greenland. This trip will take place from August 10 through 22, 2020. Experience polar bears, walruses, seals, caribou, vast ice floes, pack ice, huge icebergs calving off the glaciers, and the arctic summer with wildlife abounding and wild flowers spread across the tundra. Follow in the wake of Franklin’s expedition, doomed while searching for the Northwest Passage. The fourth trip is to China to explore the ancient Silk Road. This trip will take place in October, 2020. Information about this Destination Feel the aura of adventure as we follow in the footsteps of Marco Polo along China’s Silk Road. Once, camels loaded with exotic goods travelled across snow-capped mountains and desolate deserts on this vital artery of trade, culture and religious exchange between East and West. We begin in Beijing and then travel to the ancient capital of Xian. In Tianshui, climb the Maijishan Grottoes with over 7,000 carved Buddhist statues. Kashgar is prized for its Islamic culture, Id Kah Mosque and Abakh Hoja Mausoleum, as well as for its outdoor markets and ethnic handicrafts. Explore a Uyghur village and the ancient ruins of Jiaohe and Gaochang. In Dunhuang, the Mogao Grottoes contain the finest examples of Buddhist art: delicate frescoes and lifelike, painted Buddhist clay sculptures. Visit one of the most important Buddhist temples in Nepal, the Swayambhunath Stupa. Go on safari in Chitwan National Park, and view the Himalayas at sunrise. The following trips are in the planning stage. The seventh trip is to Tanzania. This trip will take place in March, 2021. See the famous Olduvai Gorge and learn about the equally famous husband and wife team, the Leakeys, who found some of the earliest human remains ever. Gaze upon the snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro and have a sundowner on the plains of the Serengeti.
