APRIL MEETING MINUTES

Dallas Gem & Mineral Society General Meeting 10205 Plano Rd. Suite 104

Dallas, TX April 18, 2017

Called to order by club president, Steven Beuhler at 7:10 pm.

Presentation:

President Steven Buehler passed out our new club brochures for everyone to see.

Jim Brown, Delbert and Monika’s son, was the guest speaker for the evening. He did a presentation on a homemade faceting machine. The awe-inspiring mechanism was built with a 3-D printer, he explained. Jim’s presentation lasted from 7:15 to about 7:30pm.

We broke for a potluck supper at 7:35pm.

When the meeting resume, at 8:20, Gerald Pennington asked for InterGem (April 28-30) volunteers. He also reminded us about the annual Colorado rock trip. Yours truly introduced a contest to guess how many rocks and minerals were in a mason jar. The contents in the jar was the prize to those who guessed correctly, or close to the correct number.

Steven says we got new wheels for the genie machines. Then we voted in news members unanimously:

1. Joy Harrison 2. Paula Smith 3. Aldan Flores 4. Paul Bowman

What a blast! The weather held up for most of the show dates. Evening rain left the last day of the event cool, sunny, and windy. People came out to see a myriad of of gems (pearls, jade, diamonds, amber, sapphire, agates, larimar, and more), minerals, and striking costume jewelry and other accessories.

Dallas Gem & Mineral Society had a booth there with beautiful products our members made, brochures about the club, a drawing for a grand prize (fluorite),

It rains diamonds on Jupiter and Saturn, according to scientist!

Carbon is in abundance on both of these planets’ atmospheres. Lightning storms turn methane into soot, which hardens into graphite chunks and then voila - diamonds fall. These precious hailstones eventually melt into liquid seas in the planets’ hot cores. They are thought to be about pea-sized, and are of course uncut, but it’s still amazing.

I would like to take a moment to recognize some DGMS shining stars.

∗ Gerald Pennington, kudos to you for finding us guest speakers and dutifully sending me the monthly skinny on gem and mineral shows and events. We know you’ve had a trying year, and the whole club is grateful for all you do.

∗ Steven Buehler, David Pirnie, and Jack Sorrow for giving yours truly feedback on making over our club’s brochure.

∗ Mike Andrews for volunteering to update our website.

Did another DGMS member go above and beyond the call of duty? Email me about it at [email protected].

Cheers,

Sean

May’s birthstone is emerald. Tauruses and Geminis share this luminous birthstone that embodies spring’s bright, green mood. As a member of the beryl family, its faceting abilities are phenomenally crisp.

“Emerald” is derived from Persian, meaning “green gem.” The Incas and Aztecs highly prized them when they discovered them in Columbia. When Europeans explored South America, and discovered emeralds, too, they became one of the stones to grace royalty’s tiaras. Celebrities today still consider the emerald a stone of prestige, wearing it in statement pieces to formal events.

Members of any area rockhound club are welcome so long as their club has third party liability insurance.
