After graduating from Poljane grammar school in Ljubljana, I enrolled at the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture where, alongside my regular studies, I took part in group seminar exhibitions, architectural and town planning workshops, and competitions (incl. seminar exhibition at KIC Križanke 1994, spatial planning of the old Metelkova barracks, Ljubljana 1994, international ‘Sampo’ seminar 1998, mentored by Profs Peter MacKeith and Mikko Heikkinen, Slovenian pavilion for EXPO 2000, Hannover 1998, planning of the Komenda, Moste and Križ residential area 1999).
In October 1999 I successfully defended my undergraduate thesis (‘The multimedia park as a spatial interface’) under the mentorship of Asst Prof Igor Kalčič. I designed a multimedia park as a symbiosis of natural and architectural elements that reflects the current period of hypercommunications systems, placing a student cultural centre within the ‘organism’ of the park as its integral part.
In December 1999, after finishing my studies, I was employed at an architectural studio, and the following year took my ‘architecture/project manager’ traineeship exam. I have since that time worked as an architecture and project manager/coordinator in the fields of town planning and architectural planning, as well as the planning of interior architectural elements. I have taken part in the planning and production of project documents and the execution of buildings and interior elements (project supervision and on-site coordination) as part of various design teams and architectural offices (Linear – D. Kajzer, R. Tomšič, Ofis Arhitekti – R. Oman, Š. Videčnik, Mercator optima – J. Šolmajer, A. Nolda).
I have, in the course of my career, worked on projects serving a number of different functions: a theatre (Slovene National Thetre Drama Ljubljana), a museum (City Museum of Ljubljana, renovation of Turjak Palace and interior), a sports centre (Zalog skating rink), commercial and shopping centres (Mercator centres in Ljubljana,
Jesenice, Kamnik and Sarajevo), private houses (Vila Justin Gaj Bled) and apartment complexes (Antonov Trg, Viška Sončava-Sunny Apartments, Kondominij “Belle Vie Tivoli”). I have collaborated on a number of entries for architectural and town planning competitions, several of which have won awards and gained domestic and international attention, including: renovation of SNT Drama, Ljubljana – first prize, Viator Center Šiška, Ljubljana – second prize, Antonov Trg – first prize, Krakovska housing complex, Domžale – selection, U2 Landmark Tower, Dublin – shortlist).
I see every project as a creative and technical challenge. I tackle the inevitable complexity of the entire process, from design to execution, by bringing all my experience and knowledge to bear on my attempt to produce a faultless project, which in turn adds to that experience and knowledge (and to my job satisfaction). A professional approach from the outset is vital, as are good relations with one’s colleagues and keen sensitivity towards the needs and desires of the project-user.
I live a quiet family life with two irrepressible school-age children. In my spare time I enjoy playing sport and music. Rok Gerbec
