I wish to extend a heartfelt thanks and acknowledgement to ALL in our Roebuck Primary School community – teachers, support staff, parents / carers and above all else the students. The manner by which the disruption and uncertainty was attended to and how every- one was accepting and supportive has made the journey that much easier. All have been some time in the planning and (unfortunately) the timeframe of works is dependent upon both funding and contractor availability but we think the short-lived inconvenience is far out-weighed by the benefits these bring. Again, thanks to all for the accommodations made to follow new health and hygiene guidelines and practices, especially the drop off and pick up each day. As more information becomes available, we shall share to keep all informed of the way we can continue our strong partnerships with all families and carers.

New Normal

Welcome back to the school term - Version 2.0. I wish to extend a heartfelt thanks and acknowledgement to ALL in our Roebuck Primary School community – teachers, support staff, parents / carers and above all else the students.

The manner by which the disruption and uncertainty was attended to and how every-one was accepting and supportive has made the journey that much easier. Now, we have our new normal as school attendance is over 93% (which is our normal pre C-19 average) and routines are being re-established.

School Board Positions

There are two Parent Representative School Board positions open for nominations. These positions are for either a two or three-year tenure (at the discretion of the nominee).

Please refer to the information on Connect regarding further details, information and forms.

School Improvements

There are several projects occurring around the school that are improvements to the facilities for all. These include an air conditioning upgrade in Ibis Block, building an Observation Room and a Food Service Area in Greenshank, IT upgrades to the internal systems and signage around the school.

*$650 is the expected total cost inclusive of all activities, accommodation, transport and food for a five day camp. Parent fundraising has historically reduced the contribution to approximately $300 per student. This amount per child per annum is therefore dependent and directly related to the effort and energy of the fundraising.

Prior to camp, payment plans may be negotiated with the Principal.

Payment will be requested during the school year when costs and participation by students is confirmed

SCHOOL PLAYGROUNDS

LIBRARY BOOKS AND HOME READERS Please continue to return all outstanding library books and home readers to the school ASAP. Library books can be left on the trolley outside the library and home readers are to be taken to class.

USE OF SCHOOL OVAL If you are using the school oval to walk your dog, please also ensure you take a doggy litter bag to remove any dog waste. Please act responsibly so our students can enjoy their play times and physical education classes.

PLAYING ON SCHOOL GROUNDS A reminder that playing around the school buildings after school is not permitted. Please ensure your child is aware that the oval and basketball courts are the only places they should be playing after school and on the weekend.

You will notice that some of our school play-grounds have the shade sails back up. This is an indication that these playgrounds are OPEN for PLAY! Please continue to refrain from playing on the playgrounds that do not have the shade sails erected - these play-grounds are still closed.

SCHOOL NEWS

HARMONY DAY

NOTE FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE

In celebration of Harmony Day this year, our students were invited to wear orange or traditional dress to school. The Student Health and Wellbeing Action Team hosted a colouring-in competition on Friday 21 March in Ibis 1. The pictures the students coloured reflected Harmony Day’s ongoing theme of ‘everyone belongs’.

All children up to the age of twelve are eligible to receive a free Western Australian-funded flu vaccination.

Flu is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus and the rate of infection and hospitalisation is highest among children.

Anyone can get the flu - even healthy people.

Children spread the virus to other children, bringing illness home to their family.

Everyone is encouraged to get the flu vaccine but it is highly recommended for the following groups, because they are at higher risk of serious complications:

Children

Aboriginal people (six months and older)

Pregnant women

People with underlying medical conditions

Call you clinic, GP, AMS clinic or your local community health service to make an appointment.

Those not eligible for a free vaccine should contact your local pharmacy or GP for your influenza vaccination.

A BOOK FAIR THANK YOU

ENVIRONMENT ACTION TEAM

R O E B U C K P R I M A R Y S C H O O L P A G E 4

Our Environment Action Team has started meeting every Thursday in the Art Room. Their current focus is waste, especially food waste. They have been watching an Australian documentary called ‘War On Waste’ (ABC) and are applying this information to our school, homes and community.

Please have a read and get to know our 2020 Action Team members:

Mrs Dearing - I love working with our fantastic Roebuck students on the Environment Action Team. When I was a young girl I walked around my suburb with a petition to save the whales. I remember borrowing books from the school library about the environment and learning about global warming. I am always picking up rubbish and trying to ‘Take 3 for the Kimberley’ when I am out and about! All our household food waste is given to my friends’ lucky and very happy chickens. I try to shop mindfully and buy in bulk as much as I can. My dad was a farmer and he hated waste and now I do too.

Tex M - Every time I go camping or anywhere I do the ‘Pick Up 3 for the Kimberley’. I was in the Environment Action Team last year and I really loved it a lot. In the future, I hope that there is a lot less pollution. Go the Green Team!

Khairan O –I’m a student councillor for 2020 and I was put into the Environment Action Team. I am really glad I am in this team. Every time I see rubbish around I know it will go into the ocean which makes me sad. When I grow up I want to breathe clean air and live in a clean world. So go the Green Team!

Jaya M – This is my second year of being on the Environment Action Team. This year I would like to learn more about global warming and do more things to help the environment. At my house I have scraps for chickens and a recycling bin. I help the earth by picking up rubbish and saving animals.

Lani S – I am passionate about the environment. Last year I was very good at collecting everyone’s soft plastic. I really like to help keep our school tidy and would love to make it better by helping reduce waste. I would do this by teaching other kids about the effect of landfill. I really enjoyed being a part of this action team last year because I like to make a difference.

Arthur S – This is my first year in the Environment Action Team. I like to go out in the environment and want to save the environment. I think looking after the environment is the best thing possible. I am inspired by my sister Matilda.

Indiana W – I am a year four and haven’t been at this school long but I have already found lots of rubbish just lying around. I love to help the environment and when I used to live in Tom Price I loved to pick up the rubbish that people just left around. Did you know if people rubbish the country, animals could eat the rubbish and then die from it?

Farron W – I care about the environment and would love to have a vegetable garden and maybe some chickens. My grandpa is an Environmental Scientist. I am very good at having a Nude Food lunchbox. This is my second year on the Environment Action Team and I am very happy to be in it again. I would like to reduce the amount of plastic that our school is using and so some projects that reuse and recycle household items.

Lee K – I’m Lee and I hope that our school will start to not use plastic and we have a better year.

Mitchell H – I believe that we need to take care of our planet Earth so that kids can grow up and be able to breathe clean air. As a member of the action team I will strive to help our school to keep clean and save power.

Tristan L – I care about the environment and I really like nature. I want the school to be clean very much and I want the world to be clean too. When I see pictures that have rubbish I get upset about all those sea animals that have eat-en that rubbish.

Casey L – I wanted to be in the Environment Action Team because I want to help the school eliminate plastic and help the school to be clean. I want to spread the word about ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’.

Georgie R – I want to help the environment because I care for the health of our earth. I like picking up rubbish when we go to the beach. I really think about the future when I’m older. I wonder if the world will be a clean or dirty place to live. We can help by putting posters around the school to get people to reduce, reuse and recycle.

Milla M – I am on the action team because I would like to spread the word about pollution and the poor little animals in the big fires in NSW and Victoria, as well as all the animals that are becoming extinct.

BOOK CLUB

My name is Raelene and I am the Scholastic Book Club Co-ordinator at Roe-buck Primary School. We have seen many changes in our lives of late, but Book Club is still here to encourage reading and a love of books!

In Term 2, rather than paper catalogues, Book Club will be offered as a Virtual Catalogue using LOOP for ordering and payment. Orders will still be delivered to the school and I will distribute to the classrooms as normal.

The link for the current catalogue is https://scholastic.com.au/book-club/virtual-catalogue-1/

For LOOP Ordering please click on the link at the back of the catalogue or go to https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/Login.aspx. If you have not used LOOP Ordering before you will need to register.

I will be closing orders in the afternoon of Thursday 14 May so be sure to place your order before then.

New Co-ordinator Required

Are you passionate about reading? Do you want to share your love of books?

I am looking for someone to takeover my role as Book Club Co-ordinator from Term 3. This is a volunteer role and involves distribution of catalogues, placing orders and then once delivered, distribution of orders to classrooms. The role involves several hours of work for each catalogue but can be done at times that suit you. If you are interested or would like more information, please let the school know and I will be in touch. I will be more than happy to show you the process.

Raelene L, Book Club Co-ordinator

When you eventually get the chance to walk around our lovely school, you will notice new signage on each block. The vision was to incorporate more of the Yawuru language in the school environs and we have the Yawuru interpretation of our four bird types on each block sign. We have continued the flight theme of our community in the signage design and have made each block identifiable by matching the faction colour to the block name.
