a believer? Did you toss words back and

forth at each other, or did you have a gen-

uine, “I’m understanding what you’re

saying and you’re understanding what I’m

saying” conversaon? In other words, did

both of you speak the same language?

If our friends and family are to actually

hear the good news of Jesus, we have to

speak their language. We have to be in

their world, being their friend, loving

them in the middle of the stuff of their

life, in ways they understand. We have to

enter their world and their language.

No, foul language is not required so they

will understand or accept us. Rude humor

isn’t essenal in order to make a connec-

on with them. And church-speak will

have them look for that third eye in your

forehead!

Paul wrote a le*er to the Chrisans in the

ancient city of Corinth and said it this way

in 1 Corinthians 9:22: …I have become all

things to all men so that by all possible

means I might save some.

Since you and I are definitely interested in

our friends and family knowing Jesus and

following him, it is in their best interest

that we do our best to effecvely com-

municate the life-giving truth about him.

Church-speak is out. We have to use

words that people know.

Do I use words that help conversaon and

not hurt conversaon?

Let us live honorably and speak truth

kindly with words that our listeners un-

derstand.

When did crème rinse become condioner?

I didn’t know this was an issue ll a few

years ago when the subject of crème rinse/

condioner came up. (I have absolutely no

idea why this was a topic of conversaon!) I

said something about crème rinse and the

other person looked at me as if I had a third

eye in the middle of my forehead.

“Crème rinse! What is crème rinse?”

And so I enlightened them that crème rinse

is what you put on your hair a9er you have

shampooed.

“Oh, you mean condioner.”

At that point in history I was living in a

house that included three females, and by

searching a bit through the ole memory

banks, I did recall that the larger and less-

used bo*les of stuff in the shower did say

‘condioner’ on them. And nary a one

(Don’t you like that word, nary!) had the

phrase ‘crème rinse’ on them; not even in

small print; not even in italics; not even in

parentheses; not even in another language!

(And when did people stop using the word

nary?)

So I stopped using the term crème rinse.

Crème rinse didn’t communicate. Well,

actually it did: it communicated that I was

out of touch.

Rebekah, daughter number two, has been

in Spain since January 15. She will be there

ll July 2. To get along in her classes and in

society in general, she has to speak Span-

ish. Imagine that, will you, having to speak

Spanish in Spain!
